Hallo People,

So weit so gut. Folgt mir auf Twitter! ich hab über 200 “folgerer” in unter 2 Tagen geschafft, also es scheint sich zu lohnen.

Wir lesen uns. Bis dahin.

“Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household. He that loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And he that takes not his cross, and follows after me, is not worthy of me. He that finds his life shall lose it: and he that loses his life more my sake shall find it.”

Matthew 10:34-39

The things Jesus says are not all sweetness and light. Not everything Jesus says is love, joy, or peace. He says things that are hard enough to cause his own followers to fall away from him. However, there are times, as we go through the translation from one language to another, from one age to another, that we lose the real essence of what is being said, many times making it appear worse than it really is. We should understand that in these words, the point that Jesus is trying to make is not that he brings division, but that division comes in his wake. The Jews had ways of saying things that were particular to their time and place, just as we do today. Because of that, translation can be very difficult. One key, however, is to remember that Jesus doesn’t change, God doesn’t change. If something said seems to be out of character it could be that we’ve misunderstood the message being conveyed. Remember, Jesus didn’t come into the world to condemn it, but that through him the whole world would be saved (John 3:17).

Meditations in Romans : 4 : Called to Obedience Rom 1:5,6 Through him and for his name’s sak

Meditations in Romans : 4 : Called to Obedience

Rom 1:5,6 Through him and for his name’s sake, we received grace and apostleship to call people from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith. And you also are among those who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.

We live in days when ‘obedience’ is not a much used word. We like to do what we want to do, what feels right for me. Obedience for adults smacks of control and abuse, we think. When we hear of obedience being mentioned we think of ‘heavy shepherding’, of people being told what to do by authoritative leaders and stories of abuse abound, don’t they! Well actually that was the theme of gossip in Christian circles twenty years ago, but today we just go with the ethos of the world and prefer to do our own thing. In fact in some churches I am sure that if there was directive teaching that required conformity to standards laid down by the Biblical preacher, there would be uproar – yet that is what the New Testament clearly teaches!

Paul refers to his calling and says that through Christ he has received two things: grace and apostleship. Grace is simply the God-given ability to do something, and God had given Paul the ability to do what he did, and that leading and enabling meant that he did things that were the mark of an apostle and therefore he had the ministry of apostleship. This calling, he said, had come from Christ and was ‘for his name’s sake’, i.e. it was to honour Christ’s own calling. We have already seen how Paul was Christ’s servant, but Jesus was there on earth as a servant of his Father, to fulfil the divine plan. Jesus had prayed, “Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you,” (Jn 17:21) and then gone on to ask for his church, that it would work in such a way that the world would know and honour the Father. This was the order: Paul’s ministry would honour Jesus and Jesus would honour the Father. That was what Paul’s ministry was about.

But the outworking of it was to call people from all over the world, the Gentiles, to come to Christ. And why should they come to Christ? Because they needed to be saved, and Christ was the means of saving them. But it wasn’t just about a one-off being ‘born again’; that was just the start. From the moment of our conversion we start a long walk with Christ where he teaches us to be obedient to his word and to the leading of his Spirit so that we are changed into the likeness of Christ (2 Cor 3:18)

This brings us back to the subject of obedience again. How can we change unless he guides us and we follow? The ‘following’ is an act of obedience. From the start, Jesus taught his disciples, “Follow me.” (e.g. Mt 4:19, 8:22, 9:9, 10:38 etc.). Today we ‘follow’ him by responding to the prompting and leading of his Holy Spirit. Jesus came to usher in a ‘kingdom’ (Mt 3:2, 4:17,23) – the rule of God on earth through Jesus and then, subsequently, through us his followers.

Now that ‘kingdom’ or ‘rule’ is a benign rule, a rule of goodness and of love. Everything the Father does through Jesus is to bring His love into our experience so when we talk about ‘obedience’ we need to think very differently to any other use of the word. It simply refers to us bringing our thinking and our lives generally, into line with God’s desire to bless us, and the channel through which He brings that blessing is His Son, Jesus. Jesus is the means through which we can be forgiven and Jesus is the administrator of God’s goodness which he is able to bring to us as we respond to his leading.

But, we note, it is all by faith, says Paul. We are people of faith because everything we do in response to God, we do in response to one who we cannot see with our eyes or hear with our ears. We ‘hear’ him in our spirit, and faith is responding to what we have heard at that deep inner level. We may use our minds to process what our spirit is sensing but it is then an act of will which exercises faith. It is as we respond in faith that Jesus is able to lead us and we obey and he blesses.

But there is yet something else here for Paul speaks to those of us, God’s children, Christians, who are called to belong to Christ. Why do we ‘belong’ to him? Because he purchased us: “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth.” (Rev5:9,10). Imagine a slave condemned to death who is then bought and set free. That is the picture language of the New Testament. Later in this same book Paul writes, “though you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were entrusted. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.” (Rom 6:17,18). The same idea comes up in a variety of forms in the New Testament: “he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves.” (Col 1:13). We belong to Christ, we live in his kingdom, the kingdom of light, a kingdom of righteousness, a kingdom where obedience to the king is the norm. All these pictures say the same thing: we are part of a kingdom, a kingdom of love and goodness, and a kingdom has a king and kings require obedience, but this obedience is about doing what is good, loving, right, to live in an environment where those characteristics are the characteristics of blessing that comes from God. Who would say that this sort of obedience is hard?

My Social Media Policy 1. Connecting: Introduce yourself and tell me why you want to connect Perso

My Social Media Policy

1. Connecting: Introduce yourself and tell me why you want to connect

Personally I think it would be nice to have new followers to type a little about themselves. But that’s it; just the basics, no personal philosophy or worldly experience, simple the facts and maybe a favorite quote.

2. Follow, add, friend: …or even stalk if you’re lucky

If someone requests to follow/befriend/stalk you I believe that you should have the option to filter the people you allow and to block the ones you deem appropriate. I believe social networking shouldn’t be about finding strangers unless you are online simply for business networking purposes.

3. Privacy, boundaries and safety: Whoa there…that’s too far

Upon adding a friend/follower/stalker you should immediately be able to classify them into a subcategory. Upon this classification things should automatically be filtered or be shared accordingly. For example business colleagues would be filtered from pictures and possibly a normal posting wall and instead be guided to an all professional contact site.

4. Signal to noise: Calm your engines…and updates

The social media experience I seek is very minimal. If you update your status a million times asking questions you would like people to answer. If you ask me to join your farm, mafia, or cult I will delete you. The best way to be my follower or friend on a network is to simply do the minimal things asked of you. And be there to check up on or talk to once in a blue moon.

5. Personal data and sharing: Understating is amazing

Social media is not about finding your soul mate or you’re long lost best friend you never knew you had. It’s about keeping in touch and making business connections, at least to me. The need to share everything about you is definitely a con in my mind and to me makes the sharer seem unapproachable.

6. My networking needs and uses: “oh baby you……got what I need”

MySpace to me seems like a tri-cycle, a network to get you started and gets your feet wet in the big and giant world. Although I at one point did have a MySpace I eventually felt that I was never on it and that to delete it would be completely fine. Facebook to me is pretty ideal although I find some flaws and annoyances now and then I believe it serves its purpose. LinkedIn has not yet drawn me in but I’m sure as I become older I will probably use the tool to market myself for possible jobs.

7. Availability: Exactly how do I know you?

I believe that you should have the ability to block people completely and only have the ability to only find others and not be found. This way you do not have unnecessary people or stockers finding you and having to ask them…”Where do I know you from?”

8. Truthfulness: Be the real you, it’s that simple

If ever possible I would love to be able to know, truly know that whoever I was friend requested by or who I was talking to was truly themselves. This would include 54 year old men stating that they are actually 54 and not 22 year old athletes. Simply put: no lying.

What Strategic Planning is not?

Clearly, strategic planning is no panacea. Strategic planning is simply a set of concepts, procedure

Clearly, strategic planning is no panacea. Strategic planning is simply a set of concepts, procedures, and tools designed to help leaders, managers, and planners think and act strategically. Used in wise and skillful ways by a “coalition of the willing,” strategic planning can help organizations focus on producing effective decisions and actions that further the organization’s mission, meet in mandates, and satisfy key stakeholders. But strategic planning is not a substitute for strategic thinking and acting. Only caring and committed people can do that. And when used thoughtlessly, strategic planning can actually drive out precisely the kind of strategic thought and action it is supposed to promote.

Furthermore, strategic planning is not a substitute for leadership. There is simply no substitute for leadership when it comes to using strategic planning to enhance organizational performance. At least some key decision makers and process champions must be committed to the strategic planning process, or any attempts to use it are bound to fail.

In addition, strategic planning is not synonymous with creating an organizational strategy. Organizational strategies have numerous sources, both planned and unplanned. Strategic planning is likely to result in statement of organizational intentions, but what is realized in practice will be some combination of what is intended and what emerges along the way. Strategic planning can help organizations develop and implement effective strategies, but they should also remain open to unforeseen opportunities. Too much attention to strategic planning and excessive reverence for strategic plans can build organizations to other unplanned and unexpected—yet incredibly useful—sources of information, insight, and action.

The discipline necessary for strategic planning can be of two sorts. The first harkens back to Latin root of the word “discipline,” emphasizing instruction, training, education, and learning. The second embodies later interpretations of the word, emphasizing order, control, and punishment. Emphasis should be placed on education and learning, although there clearly are occasions when imposing order, taking control, and enforcing appropriate sanctions are appropriate. Certainly, key leaders, managers, and planners can best use strategic planning as an educational and learning tool, to help them figure out what is really important and what should be done about it. Sometimes this means following a particular sequence of steps and preparing formal strategic plans, but not necessarily. The ultimate goal of strategic planning should not be a rigid adherence to a particular process or an instance on the production of plans. Instead, strategic planning should promote wise strategic thought and action on behalf of an organization and its key stakeholders. What steps to follow, in what sequence, and whether or not to prepare formal plans are subsidiary concerns.

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that enters not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbs up so

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that enters not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he that enters in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the porter opens; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calls his own by name, and leads them out. And when he puts forth his own sheep, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.”

John 10:1-5

Sheep do not respond very well to being driven. It takes effort to keep sheep in line while they are being driven. There is very simple reason for this. Sheep are followers. When sheep are being driven, it usually means that there isn’t anyone in front of them to guide them where they need to go. On the other hand, if the shepherd steps in front of his sheep and guides them in the direction they need to go, they will follow with hardly any effort on the part of the shepherd. Of course, sheep won’t follow just anybody. They will only follow one they know.

Herein lies a rather amazing thing. We make fun of sheep. Sheep are, after all, not the most intelligent of creatures. Yet sheep won’t follow just anybody, while we humans will follow just about anybody or anything that tickles our fancy. So, the real question is, which is really more intelligent?

It’s good fun this ‘getting social’ at work. Spending half my day on Facebook / Twitter / Blogs etc.. actually becomes totally legitimate .

For a little while now we’ve had a Facebook ‘page’, though we’ve not really done a lot with it until recently! However, a couple of weeks ago, we thought it would be worth jumping on the bandwagon and so we’ve joined the Twitter revolution too. There’s so much going on out there.

This blog has been around for quite a bit longer but it would be fair to say we’ve certainly neglected it. That’s my fault! *Puts hands up* So, going forwards, we’re planning to keep it significantly better updated – and not for just a load of pushy sales stuff (although of course we’ll let you know right here about our excellent offers!) but also featuring interesting editorial, viewpoints and tips relating to all things gardening, composting, recycling, going green and more…

And as well as contributions from the team here, we’ll also be posting regular contributions from outside experts and contributors. We don’t influence these external contributions at all – we just provide the platform for the content and hopefully it will give readers something far more interesting to look at when they come here. If you’re interested in contributing – do get in touch!

We’ll be pushing updates from the Blog out through our facebook page and twitter feeds as well as right here.

You can WIN with Original Organics!

To celebrate all this, we have £100 to spend with Original Organics to give away… and we’ll be picking a follower at random on both Facebook and Twitter to win £50 each on January 4th 2010. All you need to do is ‘follow’ us on Twitter or ‘Become a fan’ of us on Facebook to be in with a chance of winning. We will put all the names in a hat (or maybe we’ll need a large ’sack’) and picking one from each site out at random.

NB. Employees of Original Organics Ltd. and their families are excluded and their names won’t make it into the hat. It will be possible to win twice if you follow us on both Facebook AND Twitter (though the chances of this happening are probably quite slim, right?)
