Gender: Masculine
Origin: Aramaic
Meaning: “twin”
(TOM-us)

The Latinized form of the Aramaic Tau’ma which is derived from the word T’oma (תאומא) meaning “twin.” The name was introduced to the world via St. Thomas the Apostle, a character that plays a prominent role in the New Testament. He is best known for his disbelief when he first heard that Christ had resurrected from the dead, hence the saying “doubting Thomas.”

Tau’ma was a nickname given to him to differentiate him from Judas Iscariot, (Thomas’ real name being Judas or Jude). He is also known as Didymos, (the Greek word for twin), and Jude. His evangelization was attributed to the area of Persia and India. Thomas is a very popular name among Indian Christians and Persian Christians. His feast is celebrated on July 3rd. The name was introduced into the English speaking world via the Normans after they had conquered England. Since that time Thomas has been a relatively popular male name.

So here’s the deal: I have a little more than 70 CDs to review. So I’m going to do a few

So here’s the deal: I have a little more than 70 CDs to review. So I’m going to do a few batches of these short, one-sentence reviews to get caught up.

Here’s the second batch!

Passion Pit “Manners” – The full-length follow-up to their well-received EP “Chunk of Change,” Passion Pit dishes out eleven new tracks of (what I like to call) synth-whine that fans are sure to go totally bat-shit over; but while I definitely dig a few tracks (particularly “Little Secrets”), I find my mind wandering about halfway through the disc, wondering, “Is Passion Pit more effective in smaller doses?”

The Crystal Method “Divided By Night” – After five years away, Ken and Scott return with an album that is definitely more diverse than their previous dance-floor days, but also a bit more scattered in its tone; the proof is in the guest line-up which features vocalist Matisyahu, drummer Samantha Maloney of Peaches/Hole, and bassist Peter Hook of… New Order?

La Forza “Dance Music For Your Mind: Volume 1″ – A dozen tracks of the kind of subtle, DJ instrumental music you’d expect to hear playing in the background of a hipster martini lounge; admittedly, I hate those types of places, but a lot of these tracks work, especially the piano-heavy closer “The Sound of Clouds.”

Foma “Inverness” – Laced with more strings than sex with an ex, this Albuquerque-based sextet mixes standard indie rock with a hint of a mini stringed symphony (ukulele, cello and viola) giving listeners a new take on an old sound.

Various Artists “Punk Goes Pop 2″ – Shitty pop songs as redone by crappy pop-punk bands… ugh. These songs sucked enough the first time around; did we really need equal or even-more-shitty new versions of them?

Evil Twin “Evil Twin” – Much to my surprise, Evil Twin doesn’t appear anywhere on the “Punk Goes Pop 2″ compilation; believe me… I looked.

Valina “A Tempo! A Tempo!” – Valina’s third full-length of pop-punkness opens with the lyric: “You are gently requested to shit like a swan.” Can you hear my eyes rolling in my skull?

Deastro “Moondagger” – Eighties-retro synth-pop from Detroit’s Randolph Chabot (who, oddly enough, barely even saw the eighties) that pretty much everyone but me is sure to fall completely in love with.

Fireworks “All I Have To Offer Is My Own Confusion” – Pop punk that claims to be different than the standards being produced today, but is in actuality a mirror image of them: the same old guitar hooks, the same old fast-paced drumming, and the same old whiny-voiced singer.

Schleusolz “Running Out Of Time” – If Terry Gilliam were to direct a post-apocalyptic disco film that takes place on a German space station/roller-skating rink, this would be the perfect soundtrack to accompany it.

Drifting In Silence “Facewithin” – The project of Chicago-based composer Derrick Stembridge, “Facewithin” is a gloomy instrumental trip back to the early days of Ministry and Skinny Puppy, but with a bit of a dancier edge thrown in to appeal to the younger set.

Pill Hill Radio “Pill Hill Radio” – Early nineties rock is apparently alive, well and living in Brooklyn; and while it’s definitely not my cup of tea, it did evoke a bit of nostalgia in me for my high school years.

Starfucker “Jupiter” – Yet more synth-pop that does little for me, though I did enjoy their cover of Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want To Have Fun”… but that’s probably only because I wanted to sleep with her when I was a kid.

Larry McDonald “Drumquestra” – Legendary Jamaican percussionist Larry McDonald has been in the music-making business for decades and has played with everyone from Toots & The Maytals and Bob Marley to the Skatalites and Dub is a Weapon. Amazingly, this is his first solo album. Buy it. That is all.

Chali 2na “Fish Outta Water” - Finally finally finally Chali 2na’s solo album is out, giving us fifteen fantastically fresh tracks from Jurassic 5’s brazen baritone, with guest appearances from Talib Kweli, Choklate and Damian and Stephen Marley. The loop track: “International.”

Ray Charles “Genius: The Ultimate Ray Charles Collection” – Another great Ray Charles compilation collecting 21 of his greatest hits (to be read: “songs they play on the radio”) including “I’ve Got A Woman” and “Drown In My Own Tears”, though I gladly would have traded both “Yesterday” and “America The Beautiful” for “Mess Around.”

Heavyweight Dub Champion “Rise Of The Champion Nation” - More than 25 musicians contributed to this dub/scratch/hip-hop/rock/reggae album (including KRS-One, Dr. Israel and Killah Priest, among others), creating a genre-defying gem in the process.

And still more to come,

Client ACCESS, a global provider of advanced software technologies to the mobile and beyond-PC marke

Client ACCESS, a global provider of advanced software technologies to the mobile and beyond-PC markets, has signed an agreement with NTT DOCOMO regarding software development by ACCESS for a FOMA(TM) operator pack. This marks the beginning of the project’s development phase.

This official software development agreement follows the System Engineering Assistance agreement, which was signed on July 16, 2008, involving the production of basic specifications for the operator pack.

The FOMA operator pack, an integrated application package that implements services such as i-mode(TM), supports the specifications of the LiMo Foundation (LiMo). Development of the FOMA operator pack will make it possible for mobile handset manufacturers worldwide to provide immediate support for DOCOMO on their own devices.

ACCESS and DOCOMO play leading roles in LiMo, a dedicated consortium of mobile industry leaders working together to deliver an open and globally consistent handset software platform based on mobile Linux(R). Established as a non-profit organization in 2007, LiMo has grown from six charter members – DOCOMO among them – to more than 50 members as of December 2008, including world-leading operators and handset manufacturers. By promoting a LiMo- compliant solution using ACCESS Linux Platform(TM), the two companies will help mobile handset OEMs and ODMs develop high-performance handsets more efficiently, increase coordination between operators and handset manufacturers and further energize innovation in the mobile phone market.

“The recent trend toward high-performance handsets capable of meeting a variety of customer needs is gaining a great amount of attention in Japan and overseas as mobile phones evolve beyond the level of mere tools to become essential elements of a customized digital lifestyle,” said Toru Arakawa, CEO, president and co-founder of ACCESS. “By combining the operator packs we develop with ACCESS Linux Platform, we will help DOCOMO develop attractive handsets and services.”

DOCOMO’s FOMA service is available only to subscribers in Japan.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the company, ACCESS is a global provider of advanced software technologies to the mobile and beyond-PC markets. With research and engineering centers throughout the world, ACCESS delivers unique solutions that bring value to its customers and partners and which help make life easier, more productive, and more enjoyable.

As a mobile Internet pioneer, ACCESS has helped to develop and deliver technologies that have brought the Internet to a new generation of mobile devices and consumers. ACCESS technologies were central to the development of the first successful mobile data service in the world and this pioneering success has grown at a phenomenal pace with ACCESS technologies now deployed in millions of devices throughout the world.

Principal ACCESS technologies include the Garnet OS, one of the first and most successful mobile operating systems ever developed, the ACCESS Linux Platform, a software platform that combines the ease-of-use and functionality of Garnet OS with a Linux core, NetFront Mobile Client Suite, a comprehensive client software suite for mobile devices, and NetFront an advanced, full-Internet browser widely recognized as one of the leading browsers in the world.

Tiffany injured her foot on the massive hills during the Turkey Trot and was unable to join Lori and me for our Sunday run. Still hung over from my foma, I don’t think I would have made it if Lori didn’t guilt motivate me into running on Sunday. Although, this week’s distance had me running 16 miles, my lack of drive thought 10 miles would be sufficient.

Then about mile 3, my adrenaline kicked in and I decided to go the distance. I hurdled over my wall at 13 miles and felt suprisingly well. I knew I could finish last 3 miles strong. Keeping my pace at 11 minute miles, I completed 16 miles in 3:10.

Like last week, I felt some soreness but with some stretching, I felt fine. I didn’t have enough nerve to try an ice bath, but maybe after my 18 mile run next week!

With the holidays fast approaching, I’ve reviewed my training schedule and I’ve decided to modify it a bit. Like I mentioned before, I plan to run 18 miles because this Sunday allows the time to do so. The following Sunday, we have our Moms on the Go Christmas party in the morning, so I will have to run in the late afternoon and that will be the week I arrange to do a step-back run. On the 21st, I will run 20 miles. The week of the 27th, I will be vacationing in North Carolina for New Years, and I anticipate running in the snow covered mountains. We will return on Jan 3rd and I plan to run 8-12 miles on the 4th, which will put me back on route with my training schedule.

I apologize for my absence. Once the tryptophan finally dissipated and I awoke from my foma (food c

I apologize for my absence. Once the tryptophan finally dissipated and I awoke from my foma (food coma), I spent the next few days in a self-induced shopping coma.

As much as I love shopping on Black Friday, I lacked the same enthusiasm in previous years. This year, I only visited Wally World to score a $9 Kung Fu Panda and some $4 fleece pajamas. I suppose I could have stayed in bed and slept off the trippy tryptophan feeling, but I love the excitement of Black Friday and the crowds.

Over the years, I have learned to stay clear of overly cheery Black Friday freaks fans. These ladies wear their merriest holiday ensemble. You will hear their jingle bells as they run you over with their cart to grab the last Wii bundle.

This year, I spotted a herd of ladies dressed like Christmas cheerleaders. They wore red holiday tees bedazzled with “Shine” in sparkly letters across the front. They completed the look with shimmer red and green headbands that looked an elf exploded on their heads. Although the outfits were a riot, I found their conversation even more comical. In true Target Lady fashion, they made comments about every little item as they shopped.

“Well, isn’t this lovely?”

“Have you ever seen anything so cute in your life?”

“And you can’t beat the price!”

This holiday version of the Target Lady made it worth getting up at 6:00 a.m. to shop.

In past years, I would find myself waking up at 3:30 a.m. to begin a marathon day of shopping. Around 8:00 a.m., my girlfriends would make a pit stop at my house to refuel with a hot cooked breakfast prepared by my DH. Then, my family and I would head out for round two of crazed crowds in shopping malls.

But this year, my DH needed to work on Black Friday and so my mall shlepping would be trimmed.

After Wal-Mart, I continued my holiday spending spree with some on-line shopping. That’s when I found my moment of Zen. With no screaming, fighting or crying children begging me to buy every fuzzy and shiny object, I shopped at 6 different stores all at the same time. My children happily played while I loaded my shopping carts. It was fabulous.

For this Black Friday, I saved my sanity as well as a few dollars.

But then, this morning on the news, I heard about a relatively new retail phenomenon: Cyber Monday. WHAT?! More rock bottom prices?! Once again, I shopped till my eyelids dropped searching for bargains and all from the comfort of my ass home. I have a new love.

Move over, Black Friday! Cyber Monday is serving up deals with no lines and no waiting!
