A Dutch communications agency, SPRANQ, has invented a font designed to reduce ink consumption. Using holey cheese as its inspiration, SPRANQ launched Ecofont to help consumers cut back on replacing ink cartridges.

The new typeface, which appears at small sizes like any other type, is actually filled with tiny, inkless circles. It is expected to reduce printing costs by as much as 20 per cent.

Use Ecofont to save ink

Although the picture shows clearly how the Ecofont was designed with empty spots, it’s hardly noticeable at normal font sizes. Obviously, the quality varies depending on your software and printer.

Ecofont is based on Vera Sans and SPRANQ suggest that it is best used with OpenOffice, AppleWorks and MS Office 2007 – although results may vary.

Ah, fonts. When you look at a website you must first understand that a screen is not a piece of paper. It’s not a fixed width or height and what you type into it is rendered/appears differently depending on if you use Firefox or Internet Explorer as your browser.

Here are a few reasons web designers use plain looking fonts for body copy.

San-serif fonts (fonts that are basic and do not have trailing/curling ends on their letters) retain their appearance no matter how small their size and will read cleanly on any computer. They are also web standard because every computer automatically has them in their font folder. A website tells your computer what font it wants to use for the text and your computer then looks in its font file and pulls out the correct font. If your computer doesn’t have that font, the web page will substitute a different font- which leads to consistency issues.

But you used a different looking font here and it appears just fine.

Most likely that’s an image- not actual text. Remember that actual text needs to be flexible enough to resize in a browser. Older people tend to view a page with larger text, so body copy needs to be actually typed. An image that has text does not resize and usually is only used with a few specialized words. (EX: Logos, Titles, Banners, etc…)

Why can’t the whole page just be an image with the font I like then?

Because of resizing and editing issues. It’s very hard to edit an image- much harder than just editing text. Also you can’t resize an image and get clear readability. Images of text should only be used as fixed pieces, such as your logo which won’t change every other week.

Well, I have Comic Sans (or some other font equivalent) on my computer. I know everyone has this font on their computers- so it will show up correctly everywhere. Why can’t I use it?

Readability. People may view your website with extremely small text setting on their browser. Can you read the font you want when it’s only size 10? Now imagine trying to read entire paragraphs with that font.  It may cause eye strain which will make people want to stay away from your site- no matter how valuable the information on it is.

GOOD PRACTICES

1. When talking with a web designer, remember that they know what fonts are best on the web. They’re not working against you- they’re working for you. They want a lot of people to be able to read your website. Body/main text font is not plain- it’s readable.

2. If you have a font you would like to use- remember that it most likely will not be main/body text. If you want a fancy font used it will most likely be in an image that introduces a section/page. Don’t get upset if your font isn’t used though. The designer knows what will look and read well and wants to help make your website look the best by sticking to their design theme. After all- making you look good helps them look good.

Go to Format > Advanced > Define Text for Current Master or Define Text for All Masters. The first one will change it for the current master, and the second will change it for all new text boxes.

Here is my Screen print in the making, I hope to use the image in my magazine, either on the cover or within it. it took me a few hours cutting up various letters from magazines and sticking them together, the idea behind it is the ” wispers in the global Media” iv made a screen print out of it and hope to replicate it and try and make something out of it.

I recently posted a YogaSpy flyer at the studio I attend. I’m trying to garner a local audience, for comments from people in my own community. Because I’m still somewhat anonymous, I can’t go around telling folks about my blog. Hence, the flyer.

I wasted an inordinate amount of time choosing a font. Ever fool around with all the fonts in Word? Just convert a sentence to this or that font and … presto! … the whole vibe of the words change.

I ended up with Papyrus (overused but still charming), plus my URL in bold Times New Roman for contrast.

It reminded me of the time my grad school classmate Helena and I launched a business. While we eventually hired a graphic designer to do a unique logo for us, we initially went to Kinko’s for simple, but tasteful, cards. We were pretty picky about details, and we debated over which font to use. The guy at the counter referred us to another staffer known as the “font guy.” He knew everything about typefaces, about their histories and visual effects, about which capital “S” (or whatever letter) was particularly attractive.

Helena and I were quite amused by his obsession with fonts. It delighted me, actually. When people are into something, it’s rather contagious.

I see so much boredom in people, especially when they’re doing mundane work or killing time before their “real life” might begin. I’m sure we’ve all dealt with salesclerks who know nothing about their own merchandise, whether at big-box chains, or cafes, or the lululemon shop in town.

It’s really a matter of attitude. Sure, a job or role might be only a waystation, but it can still be interesting, it can still matter. One can be an expert in any niche.

It’s been a crazy week. In honor of it being done here are a few ways I am celebrating right now… well not number three… yet

1. Buying lots of pretty magazines like this October 2009 Australian Vogue (holy shipping delay!), and the new Elle and Elle Canada. I really like Elle, it’s just… grown on me so much. Plus the creative director Joe Zee is a fav and is everywhere all at once. Check out his great NY Diet post and then spend another 2 hours reading about what people eat in New York.

2. Downloading free fonts from Font Fabric and dafont.

3. Buying and popping champagne (aka $12 Spumante Bambino, watch an aweful/hilarious commercial here). Even the cheapest kind is packaged in a way that makes you feel like a million bucks. Gold foil anyone? Image from weheartit.

Tomorrow, themes and props I love in photoshoots: a list! (Next semester has me thinking a lot about it since I will be art directing a shoot for a double page spread (featuring a Ryerson fashion design grad) that has about a 1 in 20 chance at being published in Flare Magazine. I am so excited.

I also want to eat this picture it is so freaking good.

I think one of the ways to ensure visitors return is to keep changing the content or interactions regularly. Today’s world is fast paced and if you don’t keep up with it the opportunity to connect is lost.  Another way of communicating is by allowing visitors to share their experiences creating a bond or belonging.  However  the web administrator has to be careful to ensure that communications are respectful of each other.
Font and font size are also important, if users can’t read your text they will become frustrated and leave never returning.  Don’t use fancy words as this conveys the site is for really smart people.  
Pictures can convey warmth, cold, purity <warm sandy beach, cold snow, pure water>

Chossing the right adjectives are very important to convey the feeling “Enjoy the white-sand beach, or soak in 3 quiet crystal pools and 7 spas scattered across the Resort grounds on your divine seaside holiday”

Two words you definitely don’t want associated with your website are Frustrating and Confusion. 
Frustration:  Long page loading times, broken links, outdated information.
Confusion:    Unclear navigation,  Hard to find Contact information

Maybe some day they’ll even invent a computer that emit scents to really complete the feeling.
