001-214 / Bruxelles: La nouvelle fontaine au parc

Myself, Ryan, Lauren and Vawn went to a craft evening at The Deaf Cat cafe, where we had coffee and hot chocolate. We then to join a load of lovely friends at the pub. Its not often that there are so many people that I like to spend time with in one room! Here are a few photos:

We then walked home, and waited half an hour for food in the local kebab shop, which was horrible food, and which made me get out of bed to forcibly remove the food via regurgitation. Not pleasant… never again.

Today I had a session of Wet, on the Xbox, and I am over half way through now. I am also planning the restart of my driving lessons, which should be next week if possible! I cant actually wait to get my license… one less thing to worry about!

Il ne faut jurer de rien.

Personne ne peut garantir et donc affirmer mordicus ne pas faire un jour quelque chose qui lui semblait totalement impensable auparavant, que ce soit suite à un changement de situation ou d’opinion, ou bien sous la contrainte.

C’est bien ce qui est arrivé à un ivrogne dont l’histoire est racontée dans un fabliau du Moyen-Âge.
Dans cette histoire, notre joyeux soulard avait juré ses grands dieux que jamais, au grand jamais, il ne boirait une goutte d’eau, même pas de l’eau ferrugineuse.
Pourtant, un soir de beuverie où il avait forcé encore plus que d’habitude sur la bouteille, alors qu’il en tenait une bonne et qu’il rentrait très difficilement chez lui, complètement bourré, cuité, pété, il chuta dans le bassin de la fontaine du village et y but une telle tasse, qu’il s’y noya.

Bien entendu, ses compagnons, lorsqu’ils découvrirent le drame, se dirent que ce pauvre bougre n’aurait finalement jamais dû jurer qu’il n’ingurgiterait jamais la moindre goutte d’eau.

C’est de cette bien triste histoire^[1] qu’est née notre expression.

It’s been like this since Sara was in high school. Day in and day out, her calendar was booked solid with appointments and deadlines, performances and homework, with a social life somewhere in between. But it’s nothing she isn’t used to. It’s a hard life for a musician, even harder when you’re popular. As a holder of three jobs, Sara Fontaine doesn’t have much time for complaints. Being University of Windsor alumni, Sara works as a music teacher at Long and McQuade, teaches palates courses at a local gym, and performs for the public in shows like Rent.

When asked about her teaching hours at Long and McQuade, Sara sips her tea and shifts a little in her seat. Not working is stressful to her, and this summer, by far, was the worst. Because of parental job losses, many younger students have dropped out of the music center. Others view the summer as a break from school altogether, and they view musical education as extracurricular. The result was a decline in students, causing a decline in hours for Sara. To keep her chin high, she went to her second job to teach palates.

Sadly, due to unemployment rates, or insufficient funds, membership to the gym has declined, and checks have bounced. People have begun to debit their monthly memberships more frequently. But Sara doesn’t worry about herself too much. She has learned to deal with less, and doesn’t live outside her means.
“People don’t cost anything” she tells me. “You’ve got to value what you have and what you can do. There are a lot of schools in the area, and Windsor will be reborn soon. This is a shift-work city. We’re living in reality.”

Stress fell pretty hard on Sara when her and her group of performers, including her husband Ryan, found out that Caesar’s Windsor would no longer be having live entertainment (The Max Pellicano Show) in Cosmos Lounge. “It makes you think. How can we save money at home?”

Sara has since moved on to more performances, but she is more conscious when it comes to spending.
“Today it’s impossible to exist on one income. Back then, yes, but now, no.” Thankfully, she and her husband, Ryan are both comfortable musicians. Sara travels as well as focuses on local performances, and Ryan has been fortunate enough to work with friend Daniel Victor, of the Neverending White Lights as they participated in “Busking for a Change” in Toronto to help raise money for War Child this past September.

Sara advises the community to remember that the worker is not the victim, and that we should try our best to be creative, and to diversify, or re-energize in this hard time.

Le journaliste annonce dès le chapeau de l’article : « Le pacifique M et l’électrique Brigitte Fontaine sortent les deux albums les plus osés de la rentrée française. Depuis bientôt dix ans, ces deux-là s’amusent à conjuguer leurs pôles opposés. Dialogue convivial entre la marraine des kékés et ce filleul qu’elle a déniaisé». Revenons sur ce portrait croisé haut en couleurs. À chaque question, les deux artistes répondent, se complètent et visiblement s’amusent. Je ne vais pas vous résumer l’article, je vous laisse plutôt l’apprécier dans sa totalité sur le site des Inrocks.

Non, je tenais à parler de cet article dans le journal du P. parce que :

• Le titre : Juste ce qu’il faut de jeux de mots pour Mathieu Chedid et d’impact pour la troublante Brigitte Fontaine. Il vous aime, vous enveloppe de mélodies et range au placard Monsieur M. Elle vous encule, elle à 70 berges, elle est barrée et on aime ça !
• La performance du journaliste : J’ai eu la chance de « rencontrer » Brigitte Fontaine cet été au hasard d’une terrasse de café. J’ai pu être présenté à cette grande dame. L’échange fut bref et étrange. À la question : « Comment se passent vos vacances ? », elle m’a répondu « J’ai mal à la jambe ». Je vous laisse donc imaginer la prouesse et les différents chemins qu’a dû emprunter Christophe Conte pour obtenir 3 pages d’interview.
• Le personnage : Brigitte Fontaine montre ici à quel point elle peut être imprévisible et avec quel génie elle manie les mots. Tout est calculé et réfléchi, mais dans l’instant. Ainsi, elle porte l’article, Mathieu Chedid et Christophe Conte ne peuvent que suivre et acquiescer, Madame mène la danse. On en vient à se demander qui porte la culotte dans cette interview !

De cet article, je ne retiendrai qu’une seule phrase « Je suis grossière comme une duchesse ». À bon entendeur…

A fitting end for Andrus and the Argos

In an all-around ugly season, the Argos saved perhaps their worst performance for last. Despite resting several starters with the playoffs looming, the Montreal Alouettes took command early and romped to a 42-17 win in Saturday’s season finale at Rogers Centre.

The Alouettes, with backup quarterback Anthony McPherson starting in place of the league’s top passer, Anthony Calvillo, scored on their first three possessions and took a 26-4 lead to halftime. McPherson was near flawless all afternoon, completing 16-of-20 passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns before giving way to third-stringer Chris Leak to start the fourth quarter. McPherson also ran for 55 yards.

For the Argos, it was only a fitting end to a season of frustration. Even so, head coach Bart Andrus had positive things to say about his squad after the game.

“I told them how much they persevered throughout this year,” Andrus said of his post-game speech. “The way they came to work, their professionalism — this is a good group of people.

“When you have a group that works as has as they work, it’s just a matter of time before positive things begin to happen.”

Of course, time will tell if Andrus is around to witness a possible turnaround. He declined to comment after the game regarding his future and the future of the franchise as a whole. After a 3-15 campaign and with talk of the team potentially being sold, Andrus is as good a bet as anyone not to be back in 2010.

With little more to play for than pride, Andrus handed the starting quarterback duties for the finale to rookie Stephen Reaves. The southpaw struggled from the get-go in his first CFL start, overthrowing Brad Smith on Toronto’s opening possession for an interception that led to a Damon Duval field goal. In all, Reaves threw four picks and had another negated by a roughing-the-passer penalty.

“It was tough,” Reaves said afterward. “I pressed too much. I have to do a better job of taking what the defense gives me. I’d love to have a few of those back. Overall, a tough day against a tough defense.”

Reaves wasn’t the only Argo to slip up on an error-filled day. Andre Durie returned a first quarter kick 104 yards for an apparent touchdown, only to have it called back because of an unnecessary roughness call on Raymond Fontaine. Earlier in the quarter, long snapper Etienne Legare airmailed a snap to Justin Medlock, resulting in a turnover and an 18-yard McPherson touchdown pass to Kerry Walkins one play later.

Running back Jamal Robertson scored Toronto’s only touchdown on a one-yard run late in the third quarter but struggled horribly the rest of the afternoon, finishing with negative six yards on five carries. The Argos finished with zero rushing yards as a team.

If it’s true that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, then the Argos will have something to take from this nightmarish season. Durie, for one, suggested the team gained mental toughness that will provide an important boost in the future.

“We’re looking forward to more stability next year,” he said after the game. “Every championship team goes through losing, and we had a lot of it this year. We all stayed mentally strong though, and we’ll take that into next season for sure.”

Perhaps the biggest thing that will come from Saturday’s loss is closure. And with that, a fresh start.

“I’ll go to bat with these guys anytime,” linebacker Zeke Moreno said after the game. “I’d love to come back next year and see no new faces. We have the talent and the potential.”
