O Fantástico GmusicBrowser

Finalmente achei algo ao nível do Foobar 2000 para linux.

Ontem, seguindo em minha saga de encontrar um player de música realmente decente para linux, estava de bobeira na loja de software do Ubuntu 9.10 e vi o GMusicBrowser. A frase de apresentação me chamou a atenção: “Um jukebox para quem possui extensas coleções de músicas”. Sou eu!!

Instalei e de cara não pareceu nada muito especial… mas me enganei.

Uma rápida viajada pela biblioteca de mídia me fez apaixonar pelo programa.

Ele consegue fazer o que a maioria dos players não se preocupam em implementar: interface adaptativa. Ou seja, você escolhe quais componentes mais te agradam na interface, e a monta com os layouts pré-definidos.
Isso me lembra algo…. o Foobar 2000!!!! Que na minha opinião é o melhor player de música do planeta, e embora funcione no wine, não fica muito legal não.

Mas vamos lá. As principais funcionalidades desse programinha caprichado são:

• Desenvolvido para lidar com coleções de música enormes (10.000  musicas em diante), ou seja, a performance é incrível!
• Escrito em perl
• Interface customizável através de layouts pré-definidos
• Várias opções de busca, inclusive por diretório (a maioria dos player não tem isso). Mas por que isso é bom? Simples: imagine que você tem uma pasta “Seleção Classic Rock”. Aí os arquivos tem tags totalmente diferentes, já que você catou cada um de um album. Como fica isso na media library do exaile p. ex? Uma bagunça, dá até vontade de chorar.
• Editor de tags avançado
• Playlist inteligente: permite agrupar sons por diretório p. exemplo. Eu falei agrupar, e não só organizar. Fica como se fosse os grupos de amigos do PidGin p. ex., que você pode recolher ou expandir…
• Lastfm integrado
• E muitos outros recursos legais, além de todas as outras funcionalidades de um player comum.

E o melhor de tudo é que ainda está na versão 1. Ou seja, isso é só o começo.

Hacia un rato que no publicaba nada por acá…. Un poco ocupado con la facultad, otro poco con el otro blog que armamos con un amigo: Temporalmente Anime y Manga de blogger.

Bueno les dejo un Screenshoot  Pantallazo (3) de como esta mi escritorio por ahora. Es el estilo visual que estoy usando es ShikiWay por vicing de deviantart.com con los iconos del pack Tango, los iconos de la RocketDock(gratuito) son los eclipse2 version blanca.

El programa para ver las tapas de los CDs es CD Art Display (gratuito) con el skin PICtab por  AquaTemple. Para escuchar música prefiero Foobar2000 a otros programas.

Para recrear los menus de Ubuntu uso Free Lunch Bar. Los iconos que son solo texto los hice creando accesos directos y cambiando el icono por uno transparente. Tambien oculte todos los  “iconos por defecto” que estan en el escritorio porque no podía cambiarlos .

El wallpaper lo hice yo con photoshop y bgpatterns.com

Temabild och tillbakablick. Vid mitt senaste besök i Stockholm så hade äldsta kusinen bakat flertalet sorters fikabröd. Dessa muffins var fantastiskt goda. iTunes

Being the technologically and musically open-minded person that I am, I love to try out media players, and see which one is the best fit for me. Since I bought my iPod Touch a while back, I decided to go back to iTunes, for convenience sake over anything – I didn’t want to mess up the hard drive’s formatting and I wanted my songs and apps to sync as smoothly as possible. But, if I didn’t have an iPod, I most certainly would not be using iTunes. What bothers me is that the majority of people use iTunes now for their music playing, but they have to put up with the lack of features and slow speed. I will give you the reasons why, along with solutions that Apple could incorporate into their next version of iTunes (which, I am led to believe, is coming out next month)

1) iTunes does not have native FLAC support

iTunes, I swear, if you incorporated FLAC support, you might just be the most awesome media player out there. I know, Apple, you want your ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) to be for iTunes and to be the market leader in lossless quality music. But, let’s face the facts, you’re not. You’re far behind FLAC (and probably even WAV; as hard drive consuming as it is). You need to accept defeat and let FLAC into iTunes. I know there are several “hacks” for Mac iTunes to enable FLAC support, but there’s nothing at all for Windows users, and it may be too complicated for those who just want FLAC support and own a Mac. It’d make a lot of peoples lives easier if you just added this feature…rather than limiting people to just a few audio formats. Which leads me nicely into…

2) Better support for more audio formats

Yes, believe it or not, Apple, people do like music in other formats, or have ripped music from ANOTHER media player *shock horror I know, Apple*. So then, why do you be such assholes when it comes to this music in another format. Whether it’s OGG, WMA (and yes, you do convert the music to m4a, but transcoding that can sometimes make the music sound worse than WMA) or any other format other than MP3, m4a or WAV, it’s impossible to add it to your iTunes Library. Most people today listen to music on their computers or iPods, and you need to get a grip and let these other audio formats in. You are losing lots of end users by being so format-Nazi.

3) Allow a feature for folder monitoring

This is one thing I really miss about Foobar and Winamp. I loved how I could monitor my 2 main folders for music, and then Foobar/Winamp deleted or added anything when it started up. Because I do have rather limited space for all my music that I want to listen to/or will listen to,  I need to delete files or back them up. And I like to have all my favorite albums in lossless format (and yes, they’re all in ALAC now because I switched back to iTunes), which obviously takes up more space than a standard mp3 rip. What bugs me so much is seeing these tracks still in my library, with an exclamation mark beside them, knowing that they aren’t there anymore. It also is good for those who chronically download and sometimes even forget about albums they’ve downloaded, that way guaranteeing a complete and updated library.

4) Please, PLEASE, work on the startup time and memory consumption

Whilst iTunes 8 did see a rather significant decrease in startup time, it’s still not enough. Not everyone out there has a high spec PC yet. And, really, what takes it so long to load up? I understand loading up some media libraries may take a while, but what else needs loaded up? Foobar takes only seconds to boot up, and Winamp takes a little longer, but it’s still significantly quicker than iTunes. Cut out the excess garbage that no-one needs or wants, and I’m sure iTunes could load up quicker. It reminds one of Real Player many moons ago, when it became popular it suddenly got slower and groggier. Also, there have been more than a few occasions where I have had to simply kill iTunes completely because it was taking up over 90% of my CPU for no apparent reason, and completely slows everything down. This message can also be delivered to Firefox.

5) Why must you randomly reload up when I shut you down?

I still haven’t gotten to the bottom of this problem. And it’s occurred on more than my PC. Almost every time I go to shut down iTunes, it magically loads up again. I have to kill it in Task Manager sometimes to make it stop doing that. If it is a bug, it’s lasted for a very long time, so fix it. Now.

6) Make Genius more of a genius idea.

While I do like the Genius tool, it’s always within my own music. It’s so close to being Pandora it’s not even funny. Yes, find me music similar to what I want to listen to, but make it expand beyond my library. You guys could do something like Spotify, and I really think it would explode, especially if you link it to buying the song in your iTunes store. Win win for everyone concerned.

7) Incorporate better last.fm support, and encourage people to use it!

Last.fm is still a pretty “new” thing to many normal people out there, but it is such a valuable tool and site. Recommendations on artists you may like based on your weekly listening, event/gig recommendations based on your overall listening, and the opportunity to meet many like minded music listeners from all over the world, or just your area. It’s also cool to see what you listen to the most in a week, or ever. Within iTunes though, you could use the “love” feature which could then sync to the last.fm account, or could publish that loved track on Twitter or Facebook. Rumors circulate that iTunes is incorporating some form of better social networking support for iTunes 9…let’s hope so.

Remove the “Genre” option in Browser

Please? I can’t think of any reason why anyone would need/want to use it. Time to streamline the player, make it look better.

9) Option to tag music from a site/iTunes Store

This would make my iTunes experience a hell of a lot better. Unfortunately, a lot of music today is tagged terribly by halfwit users who don’t have a clue about computers. MediaMonkey, Winamp, Foobar…all these players have tagging capabilities from other sites. Again, if you added this, you’d be a clear competitor to the best media player out there award.

10) Have an option to convert lossless/high bit rate music to a lover bit rate when sync’ing to iPod on the fly

This would be SO awesome for us lossless lovers. I hate only having a small amount of music on my iPod (and my model is 32GB). This is one thing that Winamp’s iPod syncing does so well.

Apple, despite bringing out great products, iTunes is probably your weakest link. It’s slow, groggy, limited and to the music lover, very frustrating to use when there are other alternatives. The only thing that gives you my support is your iPod support, being the best in the market today. Be nicer to your end users, you have millions of them! Something Foobar or Winamp would strive to have.

Windows Media player(WMP) by far the most famous audio video player among common man, thanks to Microsoft for bundling it along with Microsoft Windows. As most of you must already know that WMP is not the idea player for people who like watching wide range of video’s in various formats, also for people who have huge collections of Auido. Below you can find free alternatives to WMP, they are divided into two categories Audio and Video for convenience.

Audio Players:

Media Monkey: The best media player cum organizer that one can get for free, although paid version exists, the free version is more than enough to manage huge libraries of Music. It also features a in built tag editor so edit the Mp3 tags and better organize the music. Sync feature with Ipod’s or in fact any other portable media player is a plus point. The only drawback is it is not open source hence not many customizing options apart from changing of skins and plugins that are available.For any one looking to manage a huge music collection look no further than this. J. River Media Jukebox: One more worthy alternative, and almost identical in features to Media Monkey, the only diffrerence is that the Mp3 Tag editor is not as fully featured as media monkey, it also has similar drawbacks as media monkey that is it is not open source. Foobar2000 : By default one of the most dumb players to look at. But dont be fooled by its looks, its the most customizable media player available for free. It plays almost all the audio formats including FLAC. It has various advanced features like replaygain, gapless playback. The drawback is that this audio player is not for common users, its a geek’s favorite audio player. Give it a try, and get it here.

Winamp: Everyone’s favorite audio player after windows media player and probable the most widely known free audio player. Sync’s with alost all the portable devices, wide range of presets and format supports. Also there is very active community support for winamp so expect a galore of plugins. Get winamp here.

Amarok: Last but not the least, and also happens to be my favorite audio player among all the above, with excellent sound reproduction. Wide range of audio format support. The only drawback being its windwos version is still in alpha stage. But for those using linux amarok is the best. Have look at amarok here.

The Ministry of Defence website notes that the government’s website for the Northern Province was recently relaunched. As the MoD notes,

The website which is to be regularly updated contains information of the development activities underway in all the five districts, Mannar, Kilinochchi, Mulltativu, Vavuniya and Jaffna.

The website can be described as a comprehensive source catering to the increasing demand for information about the region, especially as the Government has prioritized the development of the region with the dawning of peace after a lapse of three decades.

The website was designed and developed by the ‘Center for Information and Technology’ of the Northern Provincial Council and will also provide details of the region’s potential as a tourist destination.

Only question is – where is it?

As Nalaka points out below, the site is now working. First impressions – looks very nice, but clearly no one in the Northern Province speaks Tamil, for the website is only in English. Or maybe this is actually aimed at investors and tourists. And as I have brought up earlier on this blog, there’s no standard look and feel for Government sites. The Eastern Province website for example looks completely different to this one. But it’s good to see that websites of this nature are coming up. It’s just that it is also very clear that few, if any, of the citizens actually in the Northern and Eastern Provinces will ever use them, or can.

Cray XMT - The LTTE's computer and database server?

Palitha Kohona, the permanent secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sri Lanka had this to say in a recent interview about the LTTE’s ICT infrastructure published in Himal,

Himal: If there were entire villages that had nothing to do with LTTE, they can just be let go. But for the others, it’s a massive job of identification that you would have to do.

Yes, we are likely to make mistakes. There was a senior person, 74 years of age, who was released because of his age. And then he promptly went abroad to Singapore. And he was the one who controlled the LTTE computer, the database. So we missed out on this fellow.

Emphasis mine. So gramps controlled THE computer and THE database of the LTTE, wherever and whatever they were. Lucky bugger. Surely, he must have played around with the Cray XMT? Seriously, what other computer could be THE one used by the LTTE’s for its database?

Here’s a novel idea for ICTA – urgently provide, nay force basic IT literacy education for these chowderheads in government. This alone would justify the Year of IT.

Reports online and which I received through email indicate that more sites are being deliberately or inadvertently blocked in Sri Lanka, with most of the disruptions occurring on Sri Lanka Telecom ADSL broadband connections.

Some reports claim that domains hosted on blogger.com are being blocked, and other reports indicate that this is now a matter that is resolved. Other reports confirm that sites resolving to ghs.google.com were blocked and that ISPs have now removed the block. It is not clear why ghs.google.com was blocked.

Several organisations with their emails hosted on Google Apps reported severe problems with logging into their web mail, though POP / IMAP access worked fine.

Lanka News Web, itself blocked in Sri Lanka, now reports that another news website, Sri Lanka Guardian, is also blocked.

Coming soon after the IGP’s directive to all ISPs to “suspend licenses” of porn websites in Sri Lanka, it is worrying whether these are the first stabs at a more pervasive web filtering system in Sri Lanka.

1. แตกไฟล์ใส่ Foobar ครับ แล้วก็ folder font ให้เอา font ไปใส่ที่ Fonts ที่ controlpanel

2. เปิด foobar>file>preferrences>Display>Columns UI>FCL importing and exporting>Import…

3. ไปเลือก file kameleon_1.2.0.fcl ใน folder fcl ใน C:\Program Files\foobar2000

foobar>file>preferrences>Media Library ตรง Musics Folder ให้ไป Add Folder เพลงครับ

เสร็จแล้วก็ออกมาที่ตัวโปรแกรม ไปที่ Library Album List > คลิกขวาที่ All musics > Create Autoplaylist ก็เป็นอันเสร็จครับ

* ต้องทำแบบนี้ไม่งั้นเวลาเปิดโปรแกรมมันจะเตือนให้เราสร้าง Library ตลอดครับ

การจะใส่ปกอัลบั้ม ต้องวางรูปไว้ในโฟงเดอร์เพลง แล้วตั้งชื่อว่า folder.jpg โปรแกรมถึงจะแสดงภาพปกอัลบั้มให้เราเห็น

ภาพพื้นหลังของโปรแกรมเวลาเล่นเพลง ถ้าเราไม่ได้กำหนดภาพไว้โปรแกรม จะแสดงเป็นปกอัลบั้ม เราสามารถเปลี่ยนได้โดยทำแบบ ใส่ปกอัลบั้มโดยตั้งชื่อ ภาพพื้นหลังว่า artist.jpg ก็จะเปลี่ยนไม่ซ้ำกับปกอัลบั้มแล้ว

- Albumรูป : ตรง group: $if(%album%,%album%,%artist%)

จากนั้นก็กด OK ออกมาครับ แล้วปิด-เปิดโปรแกรมใหม่ดูครับ

Playlist จะดูเป็นระเบียบขึ้นครับ (^-^)

Paso un tiempo desde la ultima vez que publique algún escritorio. Después de que formatee la maquina, cambio varias veces, pero no lo publique porque no valía la pena.

Hoy traigo otro Escritorio Temporal: Kurumu Maid. El nombre es por Kurono Kurumu de Rosario + Vampire. 

El estilo visual Auriel por lassekongo83; el wallpaper es Hexillus por miniman de InterfaceLIFT, con la imagen de Kurumu pegada con Photshop. Los iconos del escritorio son accesos directos con un icono totalmente transparente.

La config del foobar2000: Pienso escribir un tutorial de configuración del mismo para lograr una mejor apariencia, imagino que cuando tenga tiempo lo voy a publicar.

I am a huge fan of lossless music sharing (http://bt.etree.org).  in fact, there are a ton of bands that allow free taping of their concerts to share with others.  Some of the more popular are Dave Matthews Band, Phish, U2, and a few classics such as The Grateful Dead.

Only one problem – they are all in .flac or .shn extensions.  FLAC and SHN are a simple way of saying “lossless format”.  That means that you get CD quality sound instead of the compressed (sometimes garbling) sounding MP3 format.  Lossless compression was created to make a smaller file size that sounds the same as a CD.

The reason I love foobar is the ability to use plug-ins to listen to lossless .flac and .shn files.  Foobar plays FLAC files straight out of the box, but also has support for SHN Plug-ins.  Another great thing about foobar is the simplified interface for listening to music.  You can convert to MP3 using the lame plug-in, burn to CD or any combination of other options using many of the free plug-ins that are available.

Lately I came across with a definition breaking my if-else. The reason was my macro. The macro was defined something like this:

#define foo(x) { b(x); a(x); r(x); }

Using the macro like this

if(b)
  foo(x);
else
  bar(x);

became into

if(b)
  { b(x); a(x); r(x); };
else
  bar(x);

Cleary it doesn’t work. So, I needed a { } which would end with a semicolon. The solution:

#define foo(x) do { b(x); a(x); r(x); } while(0)

It ends with a semicolon, so it should be safe to use. Now the same code expands to

if(b)
  do { b(x); a(x); r(x); } while(0);
else
  bar(x);

And it works!

Of course the program will be suffering decreased performance in debug build, but the do-while should be optimized away in a release one (if it was there). Decreased performance doesn’t matter anyway, because I was using the macro for debug printing, so it’s performance is decreased anyway.
