Eric’s turn. After an amazingly refreshing vacation, Meg and I are officially back on the bike

Eric’s turn.

After an amazingly refreshing vacation, Meg and I are officially back on the bike and aiming towards collegiate road season. One of the hardest things about a long cycling season is preventing the inevitable burnout. Week after week of cold coffee, dodgy hotels, and endless driving takes its toll.

Of course, it’s not all bad. There are adrenaline and emotion packed moments, friendly conversations, and the chance to see old friends scattered around the Atlantic coast to look forward to as well. However, for both Meg and me, the challenge is figuring out how to be fresh and on top form for collegiate road nationals in Utah. After 10 weeks of racing.

I’ve given this a lot of thought over the past few months. One of my favorite aspects of endurance sports is the ever-present opportunity to do better. No matter how good or bad last year was, each season is an opportunity to reinvent one’s self. This season, for me, I’ve pigeon-holed three issues I hope will deliver me the perfect season.

1) Stop Skipping the Long Rides

The weeks become shockingly brief during race season. After a weekend of racing, you have Monday devoted to rest and recovery and Friday devoted to easy preparation and openers. That leaves 3 days to cram in some meaningful training, not to mention having work and a life on the side.

It's a Long Road to Glory

For me, the first thing on the chopping block is my endurance workout. After a weekend of long, hard races it seems so daunting. The result is a gradual chipping away at my muscular endurance. By the end of the season, a long road race feels like an eternity and a good finish a distant and untenable desire.

My first goal for this season is to make sure I make time for my long workouts. This semester I, mercifully, have Wednesdays free. I’m hoping this contributes to an uptick in motivation.

To increase my accountability, I’ll be tracking some of my in-season rides on Strava. You can follow me there @EricFischer and heckle me for being slow. If you see me skimping on the long ride, you have my permission to slap me across the face.

2) Control My Diet In-Season

Everyone knows the feeling… For a week or so after a long, hard race, you feel entitled to eat whatever you want. ”I did a 90-mile road race last Sunday. Dessert would be lovely.”

Dear Ice Cream - I Wish I Could Quit You

Well, not this season.

Food is fuel and a solid off-season diet cannot be sacrificed, especially since this season begins a full 10 weeks before my goal races.

To help accomplish this, I told Megan. We live together now and she’s not afraid to judge me. Girls are scary.

3) Being Disciplined at Work

Race recovery inevitably means exhaustion, which inevitably means procrastination, which inevitably means late nights – you can see where I’m going with this.

Trying to Add Another One of These to the Refrigerator

I like to take things as they come, “roll with the punches,” as they say, but this cycle can become self-destructive. This spring, my goal is to be cognizant of my work load and to budget my time accordingly. While fitting training, racing, working, and spending time at home with my lovely ladyfriend seems like a lot, it can be managed effectively.

So this is it – Eric’s Plan For Greatness. Check back in May and I’ll let you know how it turned out.

What are your fitness goals for the coming year?

How are you planning on balancing those goals with a happy and healthy home and work life?

I was honored to be able to spend today, Food Day, teaching “How to Build a Healthy MyPlate

I was honored to be able to spend today, Food Day, teaching “How to Build a Healthy MyPlate” to a group of elementary kids from Haycock Elementary School in my local neighborhood of Falls Church, VA. Food Day is a nationwide grassroots effort that strives to support healthy and sustainable eating. What better way to support this message than to through nutrition education with our local youth. I was greeted by about 30 enthusiastic kids in Haycock’s after school child care program. They crowded in front of my food display and were eager to learn. I wanted the kids to know why eating healthy is important for them. Eating healthy foods helps them to:

Have energy to run and play

Grow strong muscles

Build strong bones

Feed their brains to stay sharp

“Who likes to eat vegetables?” Most of the room raises their hand.

“Who can can help me name some foods that are fruits? vegetables? grains? protein? dairy?” The kids don’t miss a beat. They throw out answers as if we’ve been practicing all day. I even get corrected by a student who reminds me that tomatoes are technically a fruit since they have seeds.

We walk through all the components of MyPlate

1/4 Fruits – bananas, berries, oranges, apples, pineapple, grapes

1/4 Vegetables – peppers, spinach, carrots, onions, squash

1/4 Protein – beans, shrimp, beef, chicken, turkey, pork, tofu

1/4 Grains – preferably whole grains, bread, cereal, rice, pasta, couscous, quinoa

1 serving of low-fat dairy – milk, cheese, yogurt

They pass with flying MyPlate colors. It’s time to step up my game. I mention that MyPlate doesn’t always have to look so nice and neat. What if we took each MyPlate group and mixed them all together? In one bowl we mix together:

2 cups canned drained diced tomatoes (Fruit/Vegetable)

1/2 cup diced red onion (Vegetable)

1 cup coarsely chopped mandarin orange segments (Fruit)

1.5 cup cooked whole-wheat couscous (Grain)

1 can black beans (Protein)

1/2 cup low-fat cheddar cheese (Dairy)

For zest and flavor:

1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro

2 tablespoons fresh lime juice

1 teaspoon minced garlic

1/2 teaspoon salt, divided

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, divided

Serve with a handful of multigrain Tostitos and Viola! Carla’s MyPlate Salsa! I was so impressed with how adventurous the kids were. They lined up to get their taste and I heard so many compliments that I was beaming from ear to ear. I didn’t even have leftovers to bring back home. Everyone thought it was delicious, but don’t take my word for it – try it at home with your family! Happy FOOD DAY!

This summer has been a very hot one – including a 10 day 90°+ streak with some bad humidity. So keeping hydrated for the long and and hot runs outside (and inside on the mill too) is key to lasting the entire run.

We all know to drink lots of fluid all day long, everyday. But when your core temperature is just as hot as it is outside, then we want to first cool ourselves down before embarking on our runs.

The trick? Popsicles! Popsicles are a great way to cool down your body temp and help prevent over heating when the sun is beaming down. Make your own by freezing some fruit with a little Gatorade mix in some ice cubes trays. Pop one in your mouth while you’re getting ready for your run and during your stretch.

By Cherokee Billie ND.

Eating a regular breakfast does help weight loss. In fact eating breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Food Is Fuel! Increase your natural body’s metabolism by eating breakfast.

Having burned about 450 calories while sleeping, your body NEEDS breakfast! So make time! Breakfast is good for weight loss. Your body needs to Break The Fast-hence the name breakfast!

Eat breakfast before doing anything in the morning. This fuels your body with energy. This is setting a foundation for the day. You would not try to drive a car without fuel. Yet, we require our entire bodies to function without proper fuel on a daily basis. Then we wonder why the body breaks down with bad health and stress.

Spend 10 minutes eating cereal, some fruit and a fat-free yogurt or a poached egg and toast. And take an apple and a whole meal sandwich to work. Avoid the high fat fast food lunches. Lose weight by eating good food, not by starving yourself and then eating doughnuts!

According to research data compiled by the US National Weight Control Registry, eating a regular breakfast is one of 4 habits shared by long-term successful dieters.

In my many years of counseling I have found the majority of clients do not eat breakfast at a regular time daily or they avoid breakfast entirely. Most people get breakfast on the go and eat at different times daily.

Fueling the body first thing each morning stabilizes the blood sugars giving you far more energy daily. Also this increases the body’s metabolism to burn fuel more effectively. It’s important to eat at the same times every day and to include a snack every few hours. Ideal snacks can be a handful of nuts, fruit, yogurt, or turkey slices. This helps keep the body charged with energy and increases the metabolism, which can lead to weight loss. Remember Food Is Strictly Fuel.

The Creator knew what He was doing when He designed foods for the human body. The problem has been the denaturalization of food by the human race! Fast food is Low Fuel. Whole Food is High Performance Fuel.

It is simple changes that add up to long term weight loss. Start every day with breakfast and you will be amazed at the difference.

So I didn’t think I’d have time to blog today, but I was having such an Eat2Win day, that I wanted to shout it out!

7:15 AM Woke up. Finally caught up my sleep from my hectic weekend. It’s so important to get enough sleep for your body to repair itself and ensure that your hunger hormones don’t get out of whack.

8:00 AM Broke my fast with a banana and coffee. I call it my AM snack.

10:00 AM Breakfast – Smear of natural crunchy peanut butter and apple butter on whole wheat toast with skim milk. Healthy fats and carbs to fill you up plus some fat-free dairy. Good pre-workout meal.

12:00 PM Spinning interval workout (65 mins). I didn’t intend to go that long so I have to thank my Tivo and Oprah re-runs. My workout is my ME time and I get to catch up on what I call ME TV. This could mean Oprah, Ellen, American Idol, Top Chef, Friday Night Lights (read: all the TV shows my husband won’t watch with me). Today it was Oprah re-runs. I did 6 interval of 7 mins moderate intensity and 3 mins out of my seat high intensity with a 5min cool down. We were in perfect sync. I fast forwarded through commercials during my moderate intensity segments and always made it through my high intensity minutes without hitting a commercial. Just when I thought I was done, Oprah brought out Bon Jovi and I had go another interval and sing a little It’s My Life from the Australia episode.

It also could have been the shot of OJ I put in my water bottle. You need fuel if you are going to extend your workout. I also use G2 which is low cal and has some sodium and potassium to replenish your electrolytes. Most important is that your are drinking before, during and after your workout.

1:15 PM Recovery Lunch – Morning Star spicy bean burger, whole-wheat tortilla, 1 slice reduced-fat pepper jack cheese, cilantro from the garden, 1 pack 100-calorie Wholly Guacamole, spinach, tomato, 6 multigrain Tostitos with a glass of skim milk. I smear about 1/2 of the guacamole over the bean burger and enjoy a few chips with the other half. It’s about a 500 calorie lunch with a mix of carbohydrates, healthy fats and protein which is going to stimulate muscle recovery and replenish my glycogen stores.

4:30 PM Wrote this blog and had a PM snack – Chobani Nonfat Greek Yogurt. Yummy and great source of protein.

Key takeaways from today:

Don’t skip breakfast! You need it to wake your metabolism up and kick it into high gear. You are not doing yourself any favors by starving yourself until lunch.

You need to fuel to win. If you don’t eat, you won’t workout as long and hard and you want to.

Eat after you workout to help your body recover with a mix of carbohydrate and protein

Drink plenty of fluids

Have a snack. It will help sustain you and ensure that you aren’t ravenous come meal time

Sleep does a body good (not to mention milk)

Do something fun when you exercise…get outdoors, dance, walk with a friend…or watch your ME TV!

I hope you had a great day as well. If not, there is always tomorrow.

Now off to figure out dinner!

So I can’t claim to have discovered Wholly Guacamole, but I have been using it for years and have recommended it to many friends and family members. I was so excited to see it featured on The Biggest Loser this season. Hope this gets the word out and ensures that we all have access to this awesome product. I’m finally getting around to officially declaring my love for Wholly Guacamole with this blog post! It’s not easy for a girl from Texas to admit that I start my guacamole from a package, but it’s true! As part of my love letter to Wholly Guacamole, I thought I’d share the Top 10 reasons I love this product:

It comes in 100 calorie packs! This means I can have guacamole whenever it want it, don’t overindulge and never have to wait for my avocados to ripen!

It’s portable. I can throw it in my lunch bag and take it to work or school!

It fills you up. The healthy fats and fiber you get will fill you up and keep you satisfied for hours.

It’s so versatile. Use it as a dip, salad dressing or condiment! It goes great with veggies or spread over chicken, veggie or beef burgers.

It is allergen free! No gluten, milk or soy in these guys.

It contains no preservatives…100 % all natural baby!

You can dress it up! If you are making it for a party and want to jazz it up, you can add lime juice, chopped cilantro, tomatoes, onions and/or jalepenos. To make it even easier, I use the fresh salsa from my grocery store with chopped onions, tomatoes and peppers and it is doctored up in a flash.

You can get it plain jane or hot ‘n spicy. It comes in Classic, spicy or pico de gallo flavors.

Talk about nutrient dense, it has 20 vitamins and minerals including tons of potassium, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B6, folate and iron!

It tastes delicious. All that and it tastes good to. Don’t take my word for it, try it for yourself and you’ll be hooked.

It is the perfect Eat2Win snack to fuel you up and keep you going without any guilt. Enjoy!
