This short article describes my concept of $50.00 vs. $5.00 and how it relates to engagement with your dog.
Ok so you got a dog and you want to train it. Great! But something happens when you get outside or go to the park. The dog forgets all about you and instead focuses on the squirrels or the other dogs or even just some goo in the grass. If you are ever going to train your dog you have to learn to be funner than the grass.
I call this the $50.00 vs. $5.00 rule. Every single distraction no matter what it is only has a top dollar value of 5 bucks. Currently when you take your dog outside you are getting out spent. $5.00 here, a few dollars there. We can’t do anything about our squirrel friends or the kid riding by on her bike or whatever. But we can elevate our value. That we have control over. How do we do that? By using a system called Marker Training. A big component to marker training is the use of a reward. That reward can be in the form of food or a toy. For most dogs it will be food. With the use of food and a system of communication we teach the dog that we are worth $50.00 24/7. We teach the dog it can get a food reward anytime it wants. If your dog’s drive for food is a little low then make sure your pup is a little hungry when you go out to train. I like to call it motivation. Dig this, when I train pups they don’t eat out of a bowl, they eat out of my hands as they learn the fair system of rules I lay down. This makes your value in your dog’s eyes go way up. As well as the value for the commands of “sit, down, here, heel” If you are averse to using food or toys to training your dog then you are just using simple force to train. If you think a pat on the head is enough reward for your dog then why don’t you just ask for a pat on the back next payday.
The dog has to know that when it looks at you $50.00! When it does anything you like $50.00.
On the average you should be rewarding your dog every 30 seconds or faster. Remember the real world distractions never stop and there is little you can do about them. But you can increase your value over the others.
As time goes by you can slowly diminish the amount and the frequency of the food reward. That is another training article. The next dog training article will give advice on how to establish the language of marker training.
Tell all your friends near and far I can help you train your dogs with humane technics that WORK. Peace!

Today I had to go to a very good friend of mine’s baby shower. I have not seen her since I began this journey. The first thing she did was look at me and then say, “you look fabulous! You should be so proud of yourself!” It is interesting. I look at myself and I just can’t see what everyone else is seeing. I have lost 36 1/2 pounds and I know it is very noticeable, but I am still struggling with actually noticing it from what I looked like pre-journey. I was very flattered that my friend complimented me. I must look very different. There were some other women that I had met previously at my friend’s wedding in July 2011. I have not seen any of these women until today. None of them recognized me and one gal could not figure out where she had met me before. I know my face and neck have slimmed down a ton and that alone has completely changed my looks. I knew deep down that it was because of my weight loss that no one really remembered who I was. After all, I was almost 40 pounds heavier. It is amazing how weight, whether gaining it or losing it can cause a person’s looks to totally transform so much that you actually confuse people who had previously met you. I was relieved that I got my workout in early. I tried a new routine today. It was a step aerobics workout with interval sprints throughout. It was a super challenge, but just what my body needed to shock it once more! Tonight, I am really tired. I need to get some more rest tonight. I have almost completed my first 10 weeks of non-stop workouts and healthy food training. As I sit here tonight, I am reflecting on how far I have come in a little bit of time. I have been doing this for a little over 2 months now. It has flown quite honestly and I can’t imagine how many more changes I will have to look forward to by Christmas this year! I am so proud of myself for continuing to light the candle that keeps this fire alive in my determination. I haven’t felt this way in years and it feels great!

Friday 8th April 2011 Once upon a time I used to be a vegetarian. I didn’t eat meat for 10 yea

Friday 8th April 2011

Once upon a time I used to be a vegetarian. I didn’t eat meat for 10 years until I moved to Spain and found spit roasted chickens and then my vegetarian days were numbered. Within weeks I was eating every bit of meat that came my way.

As a vegetarian I ate very poorly. Choosing to eat a lot of frozen, processed ready-made meals but what I did learn was that I liked vegetables. This revelation has served me well not only for my health but it has also given me the right attitude to pass onto my son.

My feeling is that the character of a child is shaped by their environment. Children do not intrinsically dislike vegetables from birth. Without (and sometimes with) us knowing, they watch and learn by us turning our noses up at vegetables or saying; “you won’t like that” or just by not eating them ourselves. Although our tastes could change as we got older, from my experience it’s much harder.

Having said that, I’m fully aware that you do what you can to get your kid to eat. There are things that I said I would never do if I had children, that I did. Feeding my son while he walked around, in the hope that he would eat a bit more, being one.

It hasn’t always been easy to get him to eat veg but my wife and I persevered and as a result, sometimes, he would rather finish the veg on his plate before anything else.

Ingredients.

Potatoes, Green Cauliflower, Cauliflower, Brussel Sprouts, Onion, Fresh Tomato & Basil.

…he sees the food! Right? I think this is one of the biggest errors that occurs in food based

…he sees the food! Right?

I think this is one of the biggest errors that occurs in food based dog training applications. And, I believe, we, the dog trainers, are to blame!

It is critical that we teach our clients to get the food out of their fingers as soon as possible, so the dog comes to believe that the reward is coming, even if they don’t see it up front. This is what we call, “making a believer out of the dog.”

The other thing I see happening when people communicate with their pet dogs is that they are saying their verbal cue at the same time that they give a handsignal. This causes overshadowing, and makes it very hard for dogs to ever learn to respond only to verbal cues.
