Segundo a empresa, o novo Ford kA e o Focus 1.0 Flex (completo) estão com preços tentadores. We arrived in sunny Mallorca on Saturday at a huge 22 degrees.. Kath and I immediately stripped off (well took our jackets off).. Kath’s aunt Maxine and Grandpa met us at the airport to pick us up. Surprisingly enough our flight was early, good old Ryanair.

From the airport we headed to Maxine’s flat which Kath and I are staying at. (Maxine and Tommy have a beautiful house behind the flat. We then headed out to lunch to an all-you-can-eat (and drink) buffet. We all stuffed ourselves full then headed into Port de Polenca to take Kath’s Grandpa home. He has an apartment right on the waters edge, beautiful location. We then went to Maxine and Tommy’s house and had watched some tv on the wide screen and had some wine.

On Sunday we had a pretty quiet day and headed out to a Medieval Fayre Markets which we walked around an old church courtyard that had a whole pig on the spit. Maxine bought us some slippers to keep our feet warm in the evenings. We went to a Kebab place for lunch. It was the biggest kebab ever!And Tasty!!

On Monday, Maxine was going to hire a car for us. So we drove into the town centre of Port Pollenca and tried to hire a car, however we were to young so we drove to Alcudia and Maxine hired us a little blue Ford Ka.  It’s a nice little 3 door car. In the afternoon we drove up to Formentor which is up narrow little roads up mountains and through tunnels to get some great views and to see a far which is a lighthouse. The views were absolutely amazing! Got to love the Mediterranean.

On Tuesday, we filled the car up at a petrol station in Alcudia – the guy came up and filled the car up for us and then you just go in and pay – it was great!! We then drove through Arta, then to Cap de Pera and went up to the lighthouse and had a nice little break – the views on this corner of Mallorca were just as beautiful if not better. We were having a snack of some cheese chip things and all these cats come out from nowhere – there was like 7 cats! We then drove around for awhile trying to find the coves de arta. We got 2 euros of our tickets which was good – the caves were great – the guide spoke spanish, some english and a little bit of french – Pretty impressive!

We then drove home and had a nice night in. On Wednesday – Kath started to feel a little better and we went in to Port Pollenca and had a quick walk around the markets and then came home- to go off for a nice drive up mountains to Port Solla. The roads were narrow – but the views were amazing. There was an odd car who we think were driving around the tourist stop points seeing if people left there cars open. We had parked our car at one photo spot, and we were taking some photos and just sitting in the sun when Kath see’s this car come from one direction and turns around and drives back the way they came and parked right behind our car, the passenger guy got out and started to look at “the view” and then when he saw us walking back to the car he got back in and had to REVERSE to drive off. The fact that he was that close when There WAS like at least 100 other places seemed odd… as we were driving along we saw the same car within like 3kms like 5 times. We think he was driving around the tourist photo stops. So we kept driving to Port Soller and had a nice walk around the water and tried to make sense of the menus etc…  We ended up getting ice cream.

We then headed through some towns and ended up in Palma (the capital of Mallorca).. The traffic was horrific through the town centre. We then headed back up to the flat. We’ve seen some fantastic views and are loving the sun and warm weather we are having.

Here’s a bit of fun. The Mirror have revealed what cars some of the top footballers would be. Here are a few of my favourites:

Wayne Rooney  would be a Ford Ka, as it was his first car and he’s even named his son after it. Well, almost.

Ryan Giggs would be a Jaguar E Type as he has appreciated with age.

All the England goalkeepers would be circus clown cars with all the bits that fall off, because they are all so error-prone.

Javier Mascherano would be a Mini Cooper -  small, but perfectly formed, and a little fighter.

I think I prefer David Beckham's legs...

Frank Lampard would be a Ford Mondeo. Scoffed at by many, but totally reliable – he never lets you down.

Rio Ferdinand would be a Peugeot 206 GTi. A winner when it first came out, but now looking its age.

And Peter Crouch could only be a stretch limo. Bless him.

I have to say I agree with them for the most part, what do you think?

This morning, on my way to work, at around 8.45am, I had a little accident.

I was early, (no, not running late for once!) & stationary. The lights changed, from red to green, but as with all morning rush hours, there was traffic galore, so needless to say i couldn’t move very far. I was barely hitting 10 miles an hr, & i must have slipped on something in the road (maybe oil, or rain). I felt my car slip. I slammed on the brakes, but smashed straight into the guy in front. Bummer! I knew i was going to hit him, so to try to minimise damage, i turned my steering wheel, & managed to hit his rear left end, thus damaging my drivers front side. Me, in my tiny Ford Ka, felt the brunt of the impact (obv!) & the other guy (Stuart) luckily was ok in his Audi A4 (read *Tank*). As this happened on a roundabout (literally just down the ring road from my home!) we drove on to the nearby lay-by, in which we both got out and inspected the damage. He got off lightly (a slight bumper scratch), & mine, however, is un-drivable I guess the main thing is that no-one is hurt.

I couldn’t stop shaking! I was fine, but thought ‘”fuck that’s my no-claims bonus gone!” (i’ve already had one accident, 2 yrs ago!) Anyway, i got out, & Stuart was ever so kind, he made sure i was ok, & we sat in my car (as the weather was crap) & exchanged details etc. We left on really good terms, & then we both drove away. I had to sit in traffic, behind him, for what seemed like forever, until the next roundabout whereby i could get off & go to my local garage for help. During my wait in traffic i called Mum. I didn’t tell her what had happened, but just left a message to get her to call me back. I appreciated she was in work, & there’s nothing she could do, but “turn your fucking phone on!” I then immediately rang my Love, Dave, he too didn’t pick up. So i rang the girlies @ work (i was due to start @ 9.30am!) & also left messages to say what had happened etc. I then got perhaps the most needed call i’ve had in a long time. Dave called & asked what was up…i explained etc. It was so good to hear his voice, he was so concerned, he calmed me down. Love.

Anyway, i got to my garage, & Ray (the owner, & a family friend) had a good look at it, removed some scary looking pieces of glass etc. He even had to use a crow-bar to pull the side-wing out from the engine! He told me to go through insurance-it’s going to cost too much otherwise. He said i could drive it home, but that’s it. I then called Dave & told him how i got on, & said i was on my way home. He said “which way?”, & as i said whereabouts i was, i saw him walking towards me! It was so good to see him! ^_^

He got in the car (still pissing it down!), kissed me (several times), & made sure i was safe! No one has ever done something like that for me. Dropped everything to see me, & make sure i was ok. X

We got home, he made me a v sweet cup of tea (he said i ‘was in shock’) & i relaxed (somewhat!). I love how much he cares for me! I spoke to Mum, told her everything, & she assumed i was driving too fast…i was to blame…blah, blah, blah…(defaults), informed the girlies some more, & then began the hunt for my insurance documents etc. I got it all sorted-i’ve lost my no claims bonus (i had 2 yrs!), i’ve lost my car (read *my life!*), some of my independence, & i have to wait until 2moro morning to receive a courtesy car. Other than that i’m ok! A little shaken up, but ok.

This bubblegum pink car with a mouth like a sad guppy fish made me automatically think …ok so the Ka has some balls. I’m not a fan of the tackily made modified cars – especially when it’s a bad car underneath all the slap, however this Ka is cute, it looks very daring yet still remains curvaceous and delicate.
The new model Ka model has very teasing eyes and flashes an appeasing smile. Compared to that of the modified new Ford Ka in Speke, seen in and around the whole of Scotland, this car will definitely turn heads.
Just for the record. I would never drive it (but that’s because I’m not an 18 anymore), maybe i just like it because of the colour and the fact they’ve modified a Ka… although spoke to soon… just saw the playboy license plate. Hmmm! I try not to stereotype, but pink – playboy – modified car spells Barbie tart girl-racer to me.

A talented hatch!

Going on from my talking cars blog before, it seems that Ford is one carmaker that is definitely talking the talk. Every new Ford car will now be able to respond to its driver’s voice.

Ford Voice Control will allow drivers to control the air conditioning, sat nav, mobile phone & radio just by using their voice – allowing them to keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. The kit will be included as standard on Mondeo, S-MAX & Galaxy and will cost £150 for the Fiesta Zetec or £200 for the Ka range.

To simplify things, users will be able to save personal voice tags to make it easier to choose their favourite radio stations or frequently dialled numbers.

Time to trade that used Ford Ka in for a new one?

Such a genius design for such an ugly car. The Ford is such a reliable brand and they really do make good reliable cars. Their most aggressive, design-full car to date is the Focus RS…the new Ford Capri is due to be released soon but for now the major competitor is the Focus RS. With daring attitude, stunning looks and a brilliant contrasting green with black detailing that’s jaw-droppingly eye catching, Ford have proven that they have the balls to design a fine piece of engineering. It’s a shame this person who designed their Ford Ka like a killer whale didn’t just decide to a) visit sea world or b) get a stuffed teddy.

Well at least the person has got one thing right… put the Ford Ka in Livingston dressed like a killer whale on top of a grassy hill in Scotland as near to the sea as possible. Sadly not quite close enough however – it’s where the poor car-whale clearly belongs.

A little while ago, I promised a rant about my feelings regarding what I call ‘modern feminism’.  It’s taken me a little while to edit it into something coherent but I hope you find it interesting:

Consider a modern wife.

Do you see:

- a flighty woman in a part-time job, who rushes around after the kids in a Ford Ka and then goes home to throw together a chaotic ensemble of potato waffles, fish fingers and baked beans,

or,

-  an orderly, calm figure in an apron with dinner on the table, ironing done and house spick-and-span?

I’d wager dollars to donuts that you imagined something closer to the first option, simply because the traditional image of a wife and mother has grown to be considered politically incorrect. We who would like to spend our days ensuring our loved ones come home to a warm, friendly house are backwards and traitors to our gender.

Don’t misunderstand me – I’m not asking that I be kept in the lap of luxury at my husband’s expanse. I’m not a lazy person (I procrastinate, yes, but that isn’t the same thing). When a job needs doing I always pull out all the stops and give it my undivided attention, otherwise I feel there’s little point in starting the endeavour to begin with. However this work ethic seems to be the reason I am now both a full-time housewife and a full-time freelancer. I’d like very much to be the former, however moving furniture around in order to sell it, running to and from town on various errands, organising moves, organising car insurance, holiday trips, dentists, doctors and the birthdays of my ever-growing collection of nieces – some of whom aren’t allowed plastic toys – doesn’t, as far as society is concerned, count as a full-time occupation. The housework is my burden alone because I don’t want S-, who works almost an hour’s drive away, to come home to more work on top of his usual nine-to-five. Somehow though, I seem to have developed the ridiculous notion that it’s not unfair for me to do said chores on top of my paying job.

Feminism, for me – and I suspect most other women in Britain – has simply brought about more work. I appreciate the right to vote and do so every time the chance comes – the fact that people died so I could weighs  heavily on my conscience – however, that I now have to work both full-time and run a household is grossly unfair. The theory was sound enough – every human being should have the right to work for a living and to be paid equally for doing so – but in real life, things just don’t work that way. Society has been geared for centuries so that when a man comes home from whatever bread-winning enterprise he’s partaken in, he can simply relax and enjoy his evening.  And that’s a habit no one in their right mind would surrender simply for the sake of fairness and equality. Meanwhile, the prospect of an independent income attracted women out to work, however on returning home, the litany of chores and household duties remained, leaving the wife to don her apron and get to it. Over time, society has come to accept this liberated woman as standard and when I tell people I stay at home during the day, their first response is to look pityingly at me and ask, as if it were a terminal disease, “Are you a housewife?”
“No,” I reply, “But I’d bloody well like to be.” They take a step back then, as if I’ve expressed an intense desire for a lobotomy.

That’s what feminism has done – it has criminalised the mothering instinct. We who wish to turn our bare-walled boxes from house to home are socially inferior because we’d like to have a fresh cake ready for our husbands when they return from work, or to spend an afternoon baking with our children rather than pawning them off on a state-run institution. We who would like to sew fleece lined curtains to keep the draughts out, or who’d like to read to our offspring are wrong and unenlightened.

Well, to those who will undoubtedly spam this saying I am against women’s rights, I have only this to say: Feminism began to create choice. I chose to aspire to a life as a wife and mother, and eventually a granny who can hug better than she can initiate a hostile business take-over.

I’m not damning those who chose to put career first – merely asking that they respect the choice I plan to make.

I think the fact that I work from home compounds my part in creating a world where I must be both earner and nurturer. My one hour lunch break – set aside for writing fiction amongst my copywriting work – is soon consumed with loading the dishwasher, doing the laundry, or nipping into town to fetch something. In order for me to have enough time to pursue my hobbies – sedate things such as patchworking and painting – I’d have to either give up sleep or one of my full-time jobs. Though at present our income dictates that I must be both bread-winner and bread-maker, I hope that in the not-too-distant future I’ll be able to enjoy a little free time for myself every once in a while.

l’appuntamento è saltato da un pezzo. son le 19, perché rischiare?

meglio fermarsi. aspetto solo di essere in una zona dove radio e telefono abbiano copertura.

spengo il motore, tiro giù il sedile e ascolto il rombo della natura. la macchina è così malmessa che temo possa filtrarci dentro l’acqua che il cielo ci scaglia contro. vedo il mio respiro appannare il vetro, stratificandoci sopra vapore ed umidità. ma non sono veramente spaventato. intanto, a nicola farà bene prendere possesso, anche verbale, del progetto.

se riusciamo, ne verrà fuori un libro corredato da fotografie. forse una mostra. sicuramente una mostra, caro – mi direbbe nicola se sentisse questi miei pensieri. sarebbe il caso di mettere tutto in rete. ecco, questo può essere uno strumento per provare a raggiungere più persone e stabilire con loro un dialogo. potremmo costruire un sito, un blog, una pagina su flickr… e vedere e sentire gli umori. io, di sicuro, devo cambiare modo di scrivere. devo cercare un linguaggio meno raffinato e più aperto. non solo devo farmi capire, ma devo anche abbracciare le fotografie senza soffocarle e, soprattutto, contenere, nel mio, i linguaggi dei nostri intervistati. non tutti parlano un italiano forbito, ad esempio.

la pioggia continua, radiotre m’inonda di musica classica, il mio sigaro evapora nei cerchietti che non sono mai riuscito a fare e il mio cervello pensa a ritratta: obiettivi, stile e rischi. secondo me, il razzismo oggi non può essere scisso dal fenomeno migratorio. certo, la mobilità umana non lo spiega, ma ne costituisce alcune delle principali possibilità di esercizio. basta concentrarsi su un tg per capire ciò di cui sto parlando. ma se analizzare razzismo e migrazione è il nostro cammino, allora quel che ne caveremo, qualunque cosa sia, rientrerà, in qualche modo, nella letteratura e nei prodotti della scienza della migrazione.

questa mi riporta ad abdelmalek sayad, autore de la doppia assenza, e uno dei più grandi esperti di sempre in materia, essendo stato lui stesso un migrante. significativo ed ironico anche che questo lavoro sia stato composto postumo, a partire da una raccolta di articoli e appunti, da uno dei suoi migliori amici: pierre bourdieu.

sayad ammoniva sempre dal rischio di essere coinvolti nella logica normalizzante del committente di questa scienza: lo stato che, nell’affermazione di una propria forma di dominio, ancora legata ai valori ed alle retoriche dello stato-nazione, avrebbe da sempre orientato la scienza della migrazione.

da un lato, le considerazioni circa l’emigrazione e le ragioni che motivano lo spostamento e la mobilitazione di centinaia di migliaia di persone – i migranti, insomma – sarebbero visti sempre e solo dal punto di vista razzizzante di coloro che sono cittadini dello stato che accoglie.

dall’altro, questo punto di vista e questo orientare, avrebbero un doppio intento: classificare il migrante come estraneo e diverso, e spiarlo per sapere come meglio controllarlo, sfruttarlo e disfarsene celermente, se dovesse diventare superfluo o scomodo. di qui, chi aiuta queste persone, questi esseri umani, marchiati e macchiati, si trova in una posizione quantomeno scomoda: rischia di passare per sospetto e trafficante.

l’immagine di me e nicola come sospetti e trafficanti è quasi divertente.

la pioggia è diventata tollerabile. si son fatte le 21. il sigaro ha bruciato per metà e io rischio l’asfissia. non mi rimane che accendere il condizionatore per disappannare il parabrezza e ripartire.

se tutto va bene, sarò a casa prima di mezzanotte.

e invece non va bene nulla, porca puttana. il condizionatore non funziona. esce solo aria gelida! mi devo togliere un calzino, usarlo per asciugare il parabrezza, fare il resto del viaggio con un finestrino semiaperto nella pioggia, per evitare che si appanni di nuovo.

ora sì, penso, che sembro sospetto. sospetto e pronto per l’ospedale psichiatrico.

ci mancava pure il telefono.

è mercoledì. piove. la mia ragazza deve prendere il treno per olbia ed essere ad arzachena entro le 16.30. ci svegliamo relativamente presto. il treno è alle 9.20.

insomma, oggi è il gran giorno. nicola ed io, alle 19, dobbiamo parlare alle maestre della scuola d’italiano per stranieri: lo stato maggiore si riunirà per concederci udienza.

nicola mi ha bombardato di chiamate, ieri. cosa diremo, come faremo, dove andremo.

è nervoso. vuole che parli io. che presenti io. che convinca io.

ma non c’è molto da dire. ancor meno da presentare. e direi che nulla e nessuno da convincere.

o ci si arriva da soli, a capire quanto è importante che questo progetto riesca in modo efficace, oppure meglio perdere subito eventuali fardelli. il progetto è giovane, e non può permettersi pesi, per ora. solo entusiasmo e iniezioni di vitalità.

dunque, si tratta di parlare e dialogare per crescere.

carichiamo la spesa nel cofano e partiamo. alle 15 in punto siamo ad olbia. nicola mi chiama ogni 30 minuti per avere aggiornamenti.

“oh, mi raccomando” si preoccupa “riparti subito che se no, non arrivi in tempo”

“tranquillo”

“ma sei sicuro di arrivare in tempo?”

“sì” gli rispondo mentre azzanno un trancio di pizza “andando ad una media di 100 km/h in tre ore sono a cagliari. sono le 15, dunque sarò là per le 18 circa”

“ma poi devi cercare parcheggio, e tutto il resto”

“tranquillo, alle 19 sarò là”

l’orologio della ka segna le 18.55 e il telefono squilla da circa mezz’ora a intervalli sempre più stretti. evito di rispondere. sono impantanato nel peggior nubifragio della mia vita all’altezza di budoni. procedo a circa trenta km orari, coi fari sparati, le ruote (troppo lisce) che slittano e la cortina d’acqua che si apre con enorme difficoltà. qualche pazzo mi supera e scompare, così com’era apparso, nell’ignoto della 131 bis, ingoiato dal nero di cielo ed asfalto.

“pronto caro” mi fa nicola con la voce stridula e preoccupata “hai parcheggiato? stai arrivando?”

“non direi proprio”

“cioè?”

“sono a più di duecento km da cagliari. poi ti racconto. in bocca al lupo con le maestre.”

“ma..”

“te la caverai benissimo” dico e metto giù.

I read today that Ford is aiming to promote its new Ford Ka in Joy fashion stores to align the two brands in order to target its market of fun-loving 25 year old single women. I think this is a great idea, as car showrooms can be intimidating places for girls. At the moment, whenever I go to buy a car, or do anything car-related I always take my dad, brother or boyfriend with me – I find that if you have a man with you, the salesman (and yes, it is always a man!) will treat you much differently. I know it shouldn’t be like this, but it is. Hopefully, now that I’m learning more about cars, I’ll be able to make a car purchase on my own without having to rely on a man!

But anyway, I would much rather look at cars at a shopping centre, it’s a much more comfortable environment for me, and you can browse the clothes racks while you are doing it – everyone’s a winner. Plus, Joy is a really cool shop, they do some really cute dresses and bags, so it’s great that Ford have picked them.

There will be a roadshow throughout September at shopping centres across the country, giving you the chance to look, touch and feel the new Ford Ka. There will also be ‘Ford Fridays’ at 20 Joy stores in September when miniature silver Ford Ka models will be hidden in the stores, and whoever finds the models will win £10 or £100 vouchers. There are over 20 stores located in the UK, each promoting the new Ford Ka. Surrey, Leeds, York and Inverness are just some of the locations, so there’s bound to be a store near you.

So if you’re in the market for a new small car, why not consider a Ford Ka? It’s a cute, reliable car that’s cheap to run and fun to drive both in the city and country.

I don’t know what goes through anyone else’s mind when they decide to go to Tesco, but for me, its an absolute ordeal that requires precision military planning and days of mental build up. I’ll do everything I possibly can to delay the inevitable mad rush from aisle to aisle – up to and including a week of pasta and canned tomato meals that vary only in their seasoning. When the cupboard is finally bare of all but one sorry looking lemon and that can of tuna I’ve carted around with me since university, I’ll finally scribble down my shopping list, put some schnapps in the fridge to calm my nerves on my return and set out.

On the road over there though, I tend to forget just what’s coming. It’s a combination of the cheesy power-ballads I listen to  – which have been banned from the house – and the fact my car can corner at 60 mph. In any case, I tend to find myself in a euphoric mood until the sound of the car locking as I walk away snaps me back to reality. As the keys slip into my bag, realisation dawns – I’m at the supermarket, and it’s the school holidays.

No offence to any mothers reading this blog – I know you can’t just leave your children baking on the back seat of your Ka, or abandon them at home to stick metal things into plug sockets, or whatever kids do when they’re not supervised – but the ones who insist on screaming when they realise they can’t have a new Xbox game could at least be gagged. I’ve seen children, and I say this with deadly seriousness, start punching boxes of cereal because their dad picked up the Tesco own brand chocolate-flavour-rice-thingies instead of the ones with the monkey on. And what did Dad do when said child split the box, sending oats flying across the floor?

“Please don’t do that.”

There was no rise in pitch, no angry intonation. The above plea came out as a sort of begging, mewling sound that lacked even the ghost of authority. At that point, I simply let go of my trolley and took refuge amongst the dog food in the next aisle, until my rage subsided.

Another thing I hate about Tesco is the fact that ingredients are really hard to find. You might think that’s a bit of a dumb statement considering the company largely sells food, but jars of pasta sauce, ready-baked potatoes with cheese  and boxes of pre-chopped veg that say ’stir fry’ on, are not ingredients. They’re finished meals that you just have to heat up.  I honestly spent fifteen minutes looking for coconut milk and whilst I found not one, but two aisles dedicated to sauces containing this substance, there wasn’t a single can of it, in its unpolluted form.

You could argue that supermarkets are all about a convenient lifestyle and that ready-meals are just a part of that, however I fail to see how pouring a jar of yellow goop over sizzling chicken is easier than pouring over a can of coconut milk, some chili flakes, ginger and coriander. People say they don’t have time to cook and fair enough, lots of people live pretty stressful lives, but surely everyone can find the time to shove a tatty in the microwave for ten minutes while they grate some cheese, instead of buying a potato with cheese already in it for double the price that takes the same amount of time to cook!

It’s widely believed that the nation’s health is suffering due to the number of ready-meals we consume, however thanks to places like Tesco and Asda, no alternative is readily available. Even if the general public suddenly realised they could cook real food, there’s no way they’d be able to acquire the produce needed at a mainstream stockist.

There are some retailers out there who do supply a wide range of products and thankfully, my local Co-op is one of them. Not only do they have coconut milk, but they also carry puy lentils which are another item that the nearby superstore fails to stock. I would do all of my shopping there, but sadly basics – such as canned tomatoes, cereals, bread etc. – are all more expensive.

Still, I’d best stop ranting. Lunch time approaches and unless I want to consume that sickly looking lemon with my antique tuna, I need to go and buy some food…

I’m not insured to drive my ickle banana anymore :’( Have to wait till after I get back from hols on the other side of reults day. Not that long but still, the dreaded results day urgh. I’m currently swotting from the highway code. Its quite relaxing really, although it has the horrible almost photo-like pages that squeak against my nails and make me cringe. How many stupid road signs are there…
