आईओसी के फैसले के तुरंत बाद इंटरनैशनल तलवारबाजी फेडरेशन ने भारतीय तलवारबाजी असोसिएशन (एफएआई) को सस्पेंड कर दिया था। हालांकि तलवारबाजों को एशियाई प्रतियोगिता में एशियन कनफेडरेशन के झंडे तले खेलने की मंजूरी मिली थी। इसके बावजूद भारतीय खिलाडि़यों के टूर्नामेंट में हिस्सा लेने पर संदेह था, क्योंकि सरकार से मदद नहीं मिल रही थी और ये देश का प्रतिनिधित्व नहीं कर रहे थे।

नैशनल फेडरेशन के पास भी संसाधनों की कमी है, क्योंकि खेल को ‘अदर्स’ कैटिगरी में डाले जाने के बाद उसे सरकार से मदद नहीं मिल रही।लहालांकि खिलाडि़यों ने निराश होने की जगह निजी स्पॉन्सर्स ढूंढे और कुछ पैसा अपनी जेब से लगाकर टूर्नामेंट में हिस्सा लेने के लिए जरूरी पैसा जुटा लिया। एफएआई के सचिव संजय प्रधान ने बताया कि खिलाडि़यों ने उन्हें सूचित किया कि उन्हांेने जरूरी संसाधन जुटा लिए हैं, जिसके बाद उन्होंने प्रतियोगिता के ऑर्गनाइजर्स को एंट्री भेज दी हैं। उन्होंने कहा, ‘आयोजकों ने विशेष मामले के तहत हमें एंट्री भेजने के लिए डेडलाइन में छूट दी है, क्योंकि उन्हें हमारी स्थिति पता है। हमने खिलाडि़यों को बता दिया है कि एफएआई के पास पैसा नहीं है और उन्हें खुद पैसे का इंतजाम करना होगा। अब उन्होंने हमें सूचित किया है कि उनके पास पैसे हैं।’ 

केरल निवासी तलवारबाजी कोच सागर सुरेश लागू ने पुष्टि करते हुए बताया कि उनके खिलाडि़यों ने फंड जुटा लिया है और वह एशियन इवेंट में हिस्सा लेने जा रहे हैं। सागर ने बताया कि एक तलवारबाज को करीब 80 से 85 हजार रुपये की जरूरत थी। उन्होंने कहा, ‘केरल के 11 तलवारबाज इस इवेंट में हिस्सा लेने जा रहे हैं, जिसमें से आठ साई सेंटर कन्नूर में मेरे अंडर प्रैक्टिस करते हैं। इसमें से सभी छह लड़कियां भी हैं। फिलहाल उनके पास इस इवेंट के लिए काफी पैसा इकट्ठा हो चुका है।’
