Forklift speed

It is important, when discussing speed and stopping distances as it applies to forklifts, to remember what we observed earlier, namely that a normal forklift is about the same weight as a medium-sized dump truck.

Because forklift are so much smaller than a dump truck, we tend not to think of it in the same way but when it comes to stopping distances, not understanding this similarity can be dangerous. Let’s take a quick look at speeds and stopping distances for a typical forklift.

If a forklift is going 4 mph, it’s going to need about 17 feet or more to stop. The driver will usually travel about 7 feet before he or she has time to apply the brakes (and that’s assuming that the driver is paying close attention to his surroundings, which is not usually the case). It will take another 10 feet for the forklift to come to a full-stop.

If the forklift is going 8 mph, the distance jumps to 42 feet. At a speed of 9 mph the distance jumps up to 51 or more feet.

When we start to look at the numbers the severity of speeding on a forklift begins to become apparent. That rack of pallets is not going to escape unscathed at best and will topple over and/or dump its’ content at worse when impacted by a forklift. What about the load on the forks? At maximum stopping speed, the load will fly off, no if and or buts about it.

In addition, a forklift is much, much more unstable than a dump truck which greatly increases the danger. Tipping over, flipping, etc… are a very real and serious threat.

Employers need to determine what a safe speed is depending on the working conditions, amount of space, turn radius, etc… and post the speed limit accordingly. Forklift drivers need to know what the speed limit is and know that it will be enforced. They need to know that there will be repercussions if they are caught speeding.

If companies are serious about avoiding forklift injuries, this must be a clear policy in the workplace.

Despite appearances, buying a forklift is not easy. Making this seemingly small capital purchase ap

Despite appearances, buying a forklift is not easy. Making this seemingly small capital purchase appears at first look to be a one off decision based on relatively few criteria, like: “Does it lift?”, “Does it drive?”, “How much?”. But there is more to it.

A forklift, a term I use to refer to any materials handling equipment that moves palletized product, has many long term implications for warehouse operations. It works in conjunction with pallets, people, pallet racking, shipping (over the road transport), maintenance, safety, and much more. In the following posts, I hope to unpack the various facets of buying a forklift with a view to providing information that will allow business owners, warehouse managers and distribution executives to save money, time and frustration in their future materials handling fleet.

From my experience, there are different types of buyers. Therefore, some of my analysis will interest you more or less depending on the angle you are coming from. I have put buyers into 3 broad categories, in which you will identify most to one, two or all three, but in varying degrees. These categories are performance, relationship and price.

Performance is the term that captures the products engineered specifications. Buyers who concentrate in this area look to analyze the speed, capacity, acceleration, fuel consumption and all the other reasons a person would choose one product over another. This is a logical decision only and little consideration is made for who is selling the product and the upfront price.

Relationship points to who is selling the product. Knowing that the world works when people keep their promises, tell the truth and are reliably available when called upon for help, relationship means a lot in business. Dealing with people we like is an important consideration for most of us. Relationships can also be not just to an individual but also from one corporation to another. Some suppliers have a proven track record of hiring, training and promoting people with the above qualities of workability. Therefore, some companies develop long-term partnerships of trust between them.

Finally, price is a consideration very few can ignore. With capitalism pushing always for “better, faster and at a lower cost”, a well-run company ignores cost at its peril. Price, however, is not so simply defined as the dollar amount on the sticker at a time of purchase. There are many other factors that are not included in the upfront price, such as the cost of ownership, the cost of labor to maintain the product, the reliability or uptime of a product.

So let us look at these facets of a purchase of a forklift prior to looking at the technical aspect of buying the right forklift for the operation. In upcoming posts, I will be looking at Price vs Cost of ownership, the implications of Value and Performance, and what a good Relationship looks like between forklift dealer and forklift owner.

When it comes to buying capital equipment, what do you see as being the most important buying criteria for you in your business: performance, relationship or price?

Understanding the basics of forklift stability Forklifts are designed to carry loads. When a forklif

Understanding the basics of forklift stability

Forklifts are designed to carry loads. When a forklift moves without a load it is much more unstable than one with a load carried low to the ground.

Because loads are not fastened down, applying the brakes often causes the load to shift, causing additional instability.

Loads are intended to be carried low. When a load is raised the stability of the forklift drops substantially. This becomes even more dangerous if the forklift is moving.

Uneven ground, especially when going downhill with the load in the front, is extremely unstable.

Because of the narrow wheel base of a forklift design (designed that way intentionally in order to allow the lift to go into narrow spaces and still be maneuverable), the forklift is extremely unstable when the operator takes a sharp turn.

Uneven loads on a forklift can add tremendously to the instability.

It takes very little to flip a forklift if the upper part (top of the cab or raised forklifts) comes into contact with an overhead structure.

Measures to be taken in order to compensate for forklift instability

Set and enforce low speed limits for forklifts. Do not allow reckless driving.

Delineate pedestrian zones in the warehouse using floor marking tape and enforce it.

Make sure that forklifts have seatbelts and make sure that the operator wears it. When an operator jumps off a tipping or falling forklift the odds are very good that he will get seriously hurt or killed.

Remove incentives and such that encourage operators to speed in order to get the work done. Instead, give incentives for operators who demonstrate safety in the way that they do the work.

Always check the distribution of the load to make sure it is properly distributed.

Do you remember the movie “Christine”, the 1958 Plymouth fury with attitude based on a b

Do you remember the movie “Christine”, the 1958 Plymouth fury with attitude based on a book by Stephen King?

You may not have a killer car in your warehouse out for revenge but chances are you’ve got one or more forklifts in it with the same destructive power. The fact is that the average forklift weighs as much as a medium-sized dump truck and, because it’s small and most often a lot quieter than a dump truck, it can become a very real source of danger to your employees. Additionally, because forklifts are used to transport heavy and bulky loads, its potential for injury goes up even more.

Forklifts are also used to load content onto trucks and semis which means that they are often working on docks and crossing spans between the dock and the truck bed, furthering the changes of an accident. Because forklifts are built to be more maneuverable than other vehicles (they usually have to get into very tight spaces, turn on a dime, etc…) they are more prone to stability issues and can be more easily flipped and tipped.

This writer has personally been involved in a forklift injury when a truck driver who had not checked to make sure that the back of the truck was closed and the steel plate removed, assumed all the loading was done and drove away suddenly leaving the back end of the forklift on the dock and the front end hanging in mid-air. I was fortunately younger and more agile than I am now (some 28 years ago now) and managed to jump clear before the forks planted in the asphalt and the forklift flipped over on its side (it fortunately tipped the opposite way from the way that I jumped). I came away unscathed. All over the county each year there are many others who aren’t so fortunate.

Most of us understand that forklift operators need to receive proper training and be certified. Few of us think about the fact that the forklift operators aren’t the only ones at risk.

Types of accidents caused by forklifts

Pedestrians hit by moving forklift (This includes pedestrians hit by any part of the forklift, whether while the operator is driving or while the operator is maneuvering)

Unstable loads that fall on pedestrians

Danger of impalement to pedestrians

Injuries to operators because of tipping over or rolling over

Injuries to workers improperly standing on or working on the fork arms or loads.

Operators falling off the forklift

Person(s) being overcome by the exhaust fumes from a forklift

Injury from shelving or other objects that are hit by forklifts

There are some unusual video games that get made every year. Most of the time, I understand —

There are some unusual video games that get made every year. Most of the time, I understand — even if the game seems weird to me, at least the developers are using some creativity and trying something new. There needs to be more chance-taking in game publishing.

But I heard of a game that just blows my mind when I consider how generic it sounds. It’s called Forklift Truck Simulator. Below is a screenshot from the game, showing how action-packed this game will be.

Uhh… Maybe there’s something I’m missing. Let’s examine some of the press release about it:

Get behind the controls of a forklift truck in this highly detailed original simulator.

Your aim is to master the demanding range of tasks facing a forklift truck driver in every day scenarios. Load and unload Lorries and train carriages within a given time schedule or store goods in huge warehouses! …

To make the experience a bit more realistic you begin in a training mode to learn your controls and achieve your license in order to continue to the missions. There is also a “free play” mode which allows you to drive freely and choose where to go and what to do with the goods.

Robert Stallibrass of Excalibur Publishing says: “We are delighted to add Forklift Truck to our range of Simulators. The developers at Astragon have a great sense of detail and have worked hard to make this experience as realistic as possible.”

Again I say, uhh… I hope there’s a LOT I’m missing, for the sake of the people who put money into this project. The concept of “as realistic as possible” doesn’t seem like a selling point for me. I usually play video games so I can do things I can’t normally do in real life. (Granted, I don’t find myself driving forklifts on a regular basis, but that’s not high on my list of priorities.) If these forklifts don’t have weapons or power-ups, it doesn’t sound too fun.

The only hope I see for this game is the “free play” mode. If it allows you to get creative and/or go on a destructive rampage, there could be some fun involved. But if it’s “realistic” and restricted to work-life experiences, I can’t see it being worthwhile — unless you plan to become a professional forklift driver, but still, real life experience would be a lot better.

But to each their own…

Before I married The Beekeeper/Honeydew/Greg, as I alternatively refer to my Darling Husband, I felt

Before I married The Beekeeper/Honeydew/Greg, as I alternatively refer to my Darling Husband, I felt that the year began on January 1 – quite a rotten day to begin again, as most people are generally hungover, grumpy, and already resentful of their resolutions.

One of the many ways Honeydew has made my life better is in restructuring the beginning of the year to a nonspecific day in the early part of December. This non-specificity is typical for Honeydew and while it often drives me crazy (he once told me during our engagement that because of the nature of beekeeping, he could not guarantee his attendance at any wedding event except the actual ceremony, which riled me, as we essentially had a destination wedding with multiple events), I’m coming to see that not living and dying by an ironclad calendar has its good points.

In October, we ship our bees down to California on a flat bed big rig – that’s pretty much the end of our year. And then in early December, we load up the two ton flat bed and drive it to California – that’s our beginning. We have two trucks, the 2 ton and the 1 ton, both flatbeds capable of hauling our forklift, which in turn is capable of moving 4 to 8 hives at a time. The forklift/flatbed combination is wonderful: instead of having to pick up a hive of bees who may or may not be thrilled by the idea of new real estate, the forklift picks up a pallet that four hives sit on together, and then slides it onto the flatbed of the truck. Less stings, less backache!

The Two Ton

This year was the first year I was able to accompany Honeydew on the journey to California, and it was fairly festive journey, especially because we were leaving from California on our long awaited honeymoon to Mexico! We left our operation at Duck Lake, near Babb, Montana, on December 2 – most things that could have gone wrong did, of course. It was so cold that the 2 ton, despite being plugged in for several days prior to departure, wouldn’t start, and then when it finally did, we discovered that we had no air brakes, as one of the filters was clogged and the line frozen. Didn’t discover this until we were going downhill, naturally. Side trip to Cut Bank to get it fixed and I was reminded of how much I love living in a small town – understanding our need to get on road to California, our local mechanics fixed us right up and we got out of Glacier County by midafternoon.

Leaving Montana

Spent the first night in Dillon and made Reno, Nevada, the second day. I played the penny slots for the first time – I was raised not to gamble, and my dad tells a great story about my lovely grandmother who, in an attempt to show her three young boys the evils of gambling, inserted a nickel into a slot machine in Vegas, telling the boys that gambling was a waste of money and they would never see the nickel again – of course, she hit three cherries and ended up with a boatload of nickels! Which, I am told, she gave to her church. At any rate, I am hard headed and don’t listen very well, so I played the slots and promptly lost $20. That didn’t stop me from having a good time, though. Sorry, Grandma.

Almost to Reno

Next morning, we survived passage into California, which is rather like entering a foreign country, if you’re in agriculture. Those Californians are bound and determined to keep non-Californian bees out of their state, along with the dirt that is often attached to the hive pallets, and anything else not native to California. The agriculture inspector looked at the orange I was eating rather suspiciously. I gave her skunky highlights a suspicious look in return. But make it we did, and after a gorgeous drive skirting Lassen Volcanic National Park, we arrived safely in Palo Cedro, California, home to many of our good beekeeping friends.

Next post … we’ll check out one of the holding yards where our bees rest up for almond pollination from October through January … I’m told those lucky gals get regular facials, massages, and pedicures and that while they currently use Burt’s Bees skin care products, the bees are anxiously awaiting the launch of Glacier County Honey’s skincare line …

Almost all industrial operations from warehousing and distribution to all sectors, which includes loose or heavy materials handling will occupy a significant truck fleet. Efficient use of materials is the cornerstone of a highly productive process through the elimination of bottlenecks. With the proliferation of lift fleets find ways to use the vehicles on the Material Handling offers enormous cost savings.

Forklifts are a unique vehicle, with many different applications. The speedMobility and strength of the elevator can be used in many ways more than just hauling pallets.

Höhenloipen Work

Whether it's maintenance of an overhead system or a new building for the facility expansion, it is always raised to do. According to their own vehicles, such as scissor lifts, in order to carry out this work is wasteful, since this function is in an existing fleet with the use of man lifts are integrated.

Man lifts in many shapes and sizes, butthey are ultimately a safer way to lift personnel, their equipment and tools, and light loads for increased work. A secure transport with horizontal bars is on the forks of a lift can be raised and secured, and how each maneuver load. A man lift is one of the few professional opportunities that a worker a lift OSHA approved manner.

While some people want to ensure the safety for granted and simply on a pallet, a man lift stand is much safer and more effective, particularly for long-term treatment. The manLift also provides a starting point for a tie lanyards and fall protection for additional layers of protection.

Booms, Forklifts and Accessories

Forklift accessories are available in every shape and size to expand the scope of work that can do a vehicle to. Some are manually locked into position, while others are operated by separate drive of the lift system, and some wholly replace the tines.

Boom systems offer an alternative approach for lifting and positioning loads. Can replace pole installationsthe standard forks to lift and move metal coils, carpet rolls or load other long, round. Hydraulic clamps give an operator the ability to open and close to a load and pressed cartons, boxes and bales to pick them up. Even with attachments drum work wonders in the chemical industry with a spring-loaded jaw, can lift drums of the lip border.

Telescopic forks can be extended to handle simultaneously on two pallets or loads, cutting time in motionhalf. For dealing with unbalanced or asymmetrical runners a rotator system can be used to shift the focus to. Silos and tanks can also by turning the fork on one side can be deposited.

Maintaining a fleet of trucks can be expensive, but they are working very necessary for the industry. With the addition of accessories, such as man lifts, it can be easily adapted to perform several tasks. This versatility adds the value of a fleet and helps to create profitability through cost savings onadditional hardware for specific applications. Lifts provide a wide range of services.

Forklift Fuel Filling Online Report

Tampak sederhana bukan?

Selamat belajar!

First order of business- Racism. I am a 28 year old white male, when i was a kid, racism really mostly involved white’s hating on every other color out there. That would not hold true though, as for quite a few years now racism is more evident in the blacks and Hispanics, towards the ones that taught them what true discrimination was really about. True there is no form of extreme hatred organizations towards the whites like the ku klux klan, but the hatred that is felt towards the white man is hard to ignore. I understand what our white ancestors did, but i also understand that I personally did not do any of that, to anyone. I have not enslaved anyone, I have not made you sit in the back of a bus, or told anyone to drink out of a separate water fountain than me. I have respected those who respected me, so why have i come across so many people of different races that have treated me with less respect than the people of their race? I’ve fucking been there, right up in the belly of the beast, and they looked at me like i was a 300 lb. man wearing a speedo. I was a forklift operator for Goya foods, they have locations all over the U.S. and produce a fairly large amount of rice, beans, and Hispanic foods. My boss was Hispanic, along with 70-80% of my co-workers, and the racism, and discrimination I received still has my head spinning 7 months later. After working at this place for 8 months, I maintained a rather insignificant status at the company, and watched Hispanics receive promotions after just 2 fucking weeks of being employed. I ended up getting fired for verbally expressing my feelings about what was happening around me, you had to be fucking blind not to see it, and even though i put out double the work than anyone around me, i was absolutely nothing to them. Now the moment someone came in, and had trouble speaking English, they were my new boss, even though they did not know how the place ran, and were unable to communicate with us. I tried to resolve the situation by discussing it with human resources, They were seeming sympathetic, but I could tell it was because they were good at their jobs, and were going to do their best to bury the situation. I wrote them a letter telling them that i will have the last laugh in this situation, but unfortunately they are quite confident in the ability of protecting their asses. Which by all means is alright with me, however Goya will remember me for quite some time, and i feel that my experience there was truly for the best. Although there is something very strange about the place, like why there is such a large amount of hispanics that are unable to speak English, working in town that is 98% white? And why did my boss appear to be on a different drug on a daily basis? Why were the people that did the least amount of work promoted the quickest?? Why in a drug free work place, were my co-workers drug addicts, and gang members?? What the fuck is going on at Goya? I spent quite a bit of time there observing all that was to be noted at that place, and I am very uncertain of the true goal at hand at that place. I truly worked hard there, as i do at any job i work. My references will ensure that if it can be done, i will do it at a rate that is rarely seen in this day of age, and yet i got fired being told that i stopped production because i talked to much. The actual fact is i was responsible for getting people to actually do their work so i could go the fuck home. So whats left now? I have a few things in mind, but only sweet precious time will tell. Racism is fucking bullshit, and for people that are suppose to be fighting against it, to be so blatantly racist towards the people they want respect from, is just complete idiocy, it’s like selling diet pills with a free fucking pizza. If you really want to fight racism, YOU CAN NOT BE RACIST!!!!!! I for one will be fighting racism by avoiding Goya products, and advising all to do the same. That is where true racism is manifesting, and I could never support an organization responsible for promoting everything that is wrong in the world today. If you have a similar story of racism in the world today, i would love to hear it, maybe even use it (with full credit) as an example in future racism related projects please email me at unleashedjeesh@yahoo.com. In closing i leave you this- Racism, it’s just fucking stupid.
