I am soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo busy and stressed right now. There are tons of paperworks to be done. Getting ready for college isn’t as easy as it looks. :| I know, I’m still a junior but I need to take this exam thingy so I can attend this very awesome seminar that will help me pass college entrance exams easily. I need to fill up lots and lots of forms and write an essay on why they should allow me to take the seminar along with the smart guys. It’s really hard to think of things to say especially if 1. you’re not good at essay writing and if 2. you’re bothered with things like homeworks paperworks, recitals, concerts and <del datetime="2009-11-26T15:38:45+00:00"><del datetime="2009-11-26T15:38:45+00:00">LOVE PROBLEMS</del></del>. Then after these, I need to take those mind wrecking exams then wait for the results. Oh god, please help me get through all these. ( really. I still don’t wanna leave high school. I still don’t want to graduate and I HATE GETTING READY FOR COLLEGE. :|

Forests are the lungs of our land, purifying the air and giving fresh strength to our people.

“Every thought, emotion and desire creates and transmits an “elemental” – also called thought-form – that carries on an existence of its own. We create and regenerate two types of elementals. When negative emotion prevails over thought, we have created emotional thought-forms, or desire-thoughts. When our ideas, desires and emotions pass through reason and love, we create reasoned thought-forms, or thought-desires. An elemental can never be destroyed, only disenergized (when no longer fed with etheric vitality). Elementals of a kind collect to form powerful group elementals. If an individual, or a collection of individuals, are vibrating at the same frequency, they will attract such group elementals. Archangels also create elementals (e.g. nature spirits and angels) in the service of the Divine Plan.”

Forms.JS is the successor of 6 separate controls for form styling, now consolidated in a single powerful component that will give you total control over the form elements on your page without any additional markup or sophisticated JavaScript. All you have to do is to add a single line of JavaScript in the head section of your webpage, define which elements will be styled, specify skinning region, set a skin, reload the page and leave the rest to Forms.JS. The component will seamlessly add cool Web 2.0 looks to input boxes, buttons, file inputs, checkboxes, radiobuttons and dropdowns.

I need to start this blog by giving Seth Weitberg big ups. Seth filled in for Charna last week, and

I need to start this blog by giving Seth Weitberg big ups.

Seth filled in for Charna last week, and his class was great. Anyone who reads this planning to study at iO, I strongly, strongly recommend him. I plan to take him in further levels.

One of the exercises he shared with us went something like this: Two performers step forward and close their eyes, take a breath, open their eyes and begin a scene where they can only say their name to each other. Not using their name to use gibberish, but a scene where the emotion is so high that silence is necessary, and the only thing appropriate to say is the other’s name. You’d get it once you saw it.

For me the instructional conflict came from the mix of two important directions Seth gave us for this exercise. 1. Clear your head of any idea of what you might do when you open your eyes. And 2. Try not to have an awkward dead space where you’re just staring at your partner.

It was clear that most of the people who were able to accomplish rule number 2 succesfully were completely ignoring rule number one to do so. I flip flopped that. I had rule number one down, but stood in silence staring at my partner before we finally got into a scene I thought went pretty well.

So how the hell do you accomplish it, really? I discussed the matter with Seth in the e-mail, and remembered a portion of Mick Napier’s book Improvise that deals with this very issue. Ultimately, the conclusion is as clear as it is unclear. Make a strong choice when the lights come up, when you open your eyes. Its ok to be ready to make that choice. The key is committing to it. Emotional choices are even better cause they can’t deny eachother. Whereas, a person cutting carrots who’s partner begins coiling rope will probably have to finish up the carrots and put the soup to a simmer to continue the scene. If one person decides to be surprised and another one decides to be lustful…well you have a scene right there. Both people can make a choice, check in with each other, and go from there.

The key is commitment. Commitment to finding how these things work together in the scene, and taking the time to get there. Don’t get scared of it if it doesn’t come immediately. I see a lot of the newer Harold teams perform. (Keep in mind, I’ve never been on a Harold team, these are simply my observations, as a student who has read a lot about and seen many of them.) There’s a running trend in their openings: impatience. The teams get the suggestion and begin their non-scenic open, whatever it may be…but before they’ve really discovered the theme of what they’re doing, somebody starts to itch thinking “this is boring, must change, how do we change it, A HA” and then they jump into another strange opening activity. In a supreme act of obedience to the “yes, and” rule, the other performers follow suit, dropping whatever they did before to join in this new thing.

The problem is, no theme becomes prevalant. There’s a series of weird physicalities and images, but the suggestion doesn’t get explored…just displayed. The scenes don’t connect to the opening, the conclusion lacks connection. It happens over and over. I think (and I have 6 classes left, I may one day be proven completely wrong) that if that team just commits to that opening, is patient and waits on the themes to be clear…the rest of the piece would follow suit.

Its the same as the exercise Seth put us through in class. Commit to your choice, check in with what your partner is doing, and explore that. Don’t get impatient.

I feel like I have a number of topics I could blog about right now, forms, meta-improv, post-del and pre-del performers (I feel like I can see one significant difference.), and stage time. More to come as I learn more. Comments encouraged…does anybody read this thing?

I have read an interesting story from a Chinese website. A factory in a major Chinese city has impo

I have read an interesting story from a Chinese website. A factory in a major Chinese city has imported a bar soap packaging production line. The line has rampant problems of not putting the soap into the box. The factory owner had found a PhD in automation to solve this empty-box problem.

The PhD in turn had recruited another 10+ people to reseach the problem. They finally have integrated micro-electronics, X-ray and mechanical technology to design a system to tackle the empty-box problem. This costs the factory over half-million dollars.

When packaged soap box without the bar inside passing through the sensors of this system, a mechanical hand will push the box out of the moving belt.

Another factory located in a small town in southern China has imported the same bar soap packaging line. This factory is staffed mostly by migrant workers from the countryside.

The factory owner was very agitated when discovering the empty-box problem. He grabbed a migrant worker out of the production line and yelled, “Solve this f___ing problem for me or your ass is on the line!”

This migrant worker had found a solution quickly– he put up an electric fan, set it to highest blowing speed at the end of production. Empty boxes will be blown away when coming. The fan costs less than $200.

“Hi Ken, does this soap packaging story has anything to do with Feng Shui or Chinese metaphysics?”

Almost every trade can learn something from this story. Here are some of the lessons:

1. There are many solutions to the same problem
2. Not the “latest and greatest” answer or technology are the best solution or cost-effective.
3. Simple solution that does the same thing is better than complicated solution
4. PhDs are not necessarily smarter than you, but for sure they cost you more

In Feng Shui, “the latest and greatest” are likely be the ones that did not work too well in distant past and got recycled as the latest secret recently “released”.

Some Feng Shui problems can be solved by simple 5-element adjustments, forms (Feng Shui) or even using bagua theory. Instead, some people hire “famous” or expensive Feng Shui masters who likely will turn your house upside down with major remodeling or tilt your doors.

Traveling Landlord Tour - Colorado's Front Range

The Front Range of Colorado has everything a rental investor could hope for: appreciating real estat

The Front Range of Colorado has everything a rental investor could hope for: appreciating real estate values, an upwardly mobile population, high median education, and consistent population influx. Unfortunately, because it’s been appreciating for some time, there’s little chance of a massive spike in value, and purchase prices aren’t dirt cheap, but there’s a strong likelihood that values will continue to appreciate gradually.

First of all, I suppose we had better start with a definition: Colorado’s Front Range includes Denver, Boulder (which we covered in some detail last time around), Fort Collins, and all the suburbs and little mountain towns that speckle the nearby landscape. While many of the mountain towns are traditional “redneck” or “mobile home” enclaves, don’t be deceived; many are quaint, charming, artsy, and expensive.

Fellow traveling landlords might consider buying a home here for sporadic use as a second home, and signing a lease agreement on it for most of the time. There are plenty of seasonal spikes and interest here, from ski bums to ski resort workers to snowshoers and snowmobilers in the winter, to hikers and campers and watersports buffs in the summer, to college students for the September to May stretch. Many traveling landlords may be interested in signing month-long leases to these crowds in the winter and summer, and spending a month or two in the property each spring and fall.

So what’s here? What’s worth seeing?

Obviously, there’s world-class skiing. The major resorts are within an hour and half drive, and some less expensive resorts are right here in the midst of the Front Range itself (such as Loveland and Eldora). But beyond the obvious, why come spend time here?

One reason is that the scenery is strikingly gorgeous, from the dramatic canyons to the sheer mountainsides to the bright blue lakes. The mountains make for fantastic hiking, camping, biking, and rock climbing (any drive up into the mountains from Denver or Boulder usually provides impressive displays of lead-climbers defying death and gravity 300 feet up a cliff face). There are trails and bike lanes everywhere, encouraging bikers and hikers to move about free of their motorized transport.

Another reason is the microbrewery scene. Yes, you heard correctly; the microbrewing culture spreads the entire Front Range and provides the best craft beers in the country. The beer itself aside, the microbrew culture is one of open-mindedness, worldliness, and art, and one trip to Left Hand Brewing Company or Twisted Pine Brewery will reveal.

Speaking of art, every mountain town worth its salt brims full of art galleries, artists, co-ops, and experimental work. Check out Nederland, Georgetown, and Manitou Springs for some great art galleries beyond the often-snooty Boulder art scene.

The Front Range is the perfect spot for a rental-second home hybrid, for traveling landlords who enjoy their outdoor sports, their craft beer, their art, and a population filled with educated, worldly people. Swing by and take a deep breath of fresh air, and while you’re at it a deep sip of Doppelbock.

(No, this is not a typo! What can you make out of it?)

I cnduo’t bvleiee taht I culod aulaclty uesdtannrd waht I was rdnaieg. Unisg the icndeblire pweor of the hmuan mnid, aocdcrnig to rseecrah at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it dseno’t mttaer in waht oderr the lterets in a wrod are, the olny irpoamtnt tihng is taht the frsit and lsat ltteer be in the rhgit pclae. Yaeh and I awlyas tghhuot slelinpg was ipmorantt! See if yuor fdreins can raed tihs too.

This is certainly an amazing little trick. Not only can you’re brain decipher these letters, but it can be considered as a form of literacy. Despite all the jumbled letters and first glance shock, an individual is actually capable of being able to read it. Talk about a headache. But the important thing to realize is that literacy comes in variety of shapes, styles, expressions, and forms. Literacy has multiple dimensions and is a host to various skewed perceptions. It is altered and created by the individual with inspiration from a wide range of possibilities. The world is created through, and of, literacy, from words used to name objects, such as trees or chairs or air, to structured prose that flows from the ingenious inner-workings of an individual. Whether it is created on paper or other form of writing space, literacy is an art form, an invention, an illusion, a piece of the earth, an expression, a trait, and is most definitely unique.
