<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>The latest news sweeping the online world is that Jenson Button has signed a 3 year deal with McLaren worth £6 million a year. I must stress that at this time this is not confirmed, but heavily suspected to be true. After yesterday&#8217;s news of <a href="http://mclarenfan.wordpress.com/2009/11/16/mercedes-buy-into-brawn-gp-and-mclaren-announce-long-term-deal-with-mercedes/">Mercedes buying into Brawn GP</a>, Jenson Button moving to McLaren seems more likely than ever. The signing of Jenson Button will save McLaren a fair few millions of pounds a year than if they&#8217;d signed Kimi Raikkonen.</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve had some feedback which suggests that I have been unfair when talking about Jenson Button and that he has far more fire in his belly than I have given him credit for. Admittedly my judgement of Jenson Button is only based on the past few seasons where before last season he was almost non-existent, and last year I was pretty unimpressed despite him winning the World Championship. I&#8217;m more than willing to be proven wrong and if I am, and this move to McLaren is actually happening, then that&#8217;ll mean more championship points for the team I love and more positive blogging to be done! </p>
<p>I can&#8217;t help thinking that Mercedes GP are making a mistake in letting Jenson Button go, because as much as I don&#8217;t see his apparent driving skills, he&#8217;s a better proposition than either Nick Heidlfeld or Nico Rosberg. The former is consistent but unspectacular and the latter is a wiz in qualifying but never seems to translate that to podium finishes. It&#8217;s all very well Mercedes wanting an all German line up of drivers but shouldn&#8217;t the potential to succeed be the bigger factor in signing a driver?</p>
<p>Mercedes have said they will announce their drivers for 2010 in the next week or so, but if Jesnon Button is announced as a McLaren driver before then I think Mercedes will be forced into bringing their announcement forward &#8211; it would be as obvious as the Ferrari signing of Fernando Alonso earlier in the year.</p>
<p>As for Kimi Raikkonen, well this leaves him taking that money spinning sabbatical that he has spoken about. He has maintained that he will only drive for <a href="http://mclarenfan.wordpress.com/2009/11/08/kimi-raikkonen-will-only-race-for-the-right-team-in-2010-surely-the-only-option-is-mclaren/">the right team</a> and with no competitive drive options left one can only assume that the 2007 world champion will not be on the grid in Bahrain next March.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Foi anunciada hoje a compra da Brawn GP, estreante e campeã de pilotos e equipes de 2009, pela Mercedez Benz.</p>
<p>É inacreditável o que os Japoneses são capazes de fazer. Por que os japoneses? Porque a Brawn era Honda. Eles montaram uma fábrica, criaram uma equipe de Formula 1,  tiveram péssimos resultados, venderam a equipe para o Ross Brawn por um mísero dolar. O inglês assumiu a equipe, venceu o mundial de construtores e de pilotos e vendeu para Mercedes por milhões&#8230; Não completamente, mas 75,1% dela, o que dá o controle à empresa alemã.</p>
<p>Esses acontecimentos resolvem o problema da falta de dinheiro que a Brawn GP vinha enfrentando pois, visto todo o investimento que a Mercedez investiu durante todos esses anos de parceria com a McLaren, da qual possuía apenas 40% das ações, ante os mais de 75%, imaginem agora com uma equipe praticamente só dela.</p>
<p>O que eu penso é que, com dinheiro praticamente ilimitado e um gênio no comando (Brawn permanece o cabeça), renasce uma escuderia muito competitiva que tem tudo para ser campeã, não imediatamente, mas num futuro próximo. A não ser que cometa os mesmos erros da BMW&#8230;</p>

<p>Em comunicado oficial no site da Brawn GP (<a href="http://www.brawnp.com">www.brawnp.com</a>) e no site da Mercedes-Benz (<a href="http://www.mercedes-benz.com">www.mercedes-benz.com</a>), Ross Brawn e Nick Fry venderam 75,1% de suas ações da Brawn GP para a Mercedes-Benz (45,1%) e a empresa Aabar (30%), um grupo de investimentos de Abu Dhabi.</p>

<p>Com isso, a Mercedes volta a ter uma equipe oficial de fábrica na F1, retomando uma história de sucesso que teve início nos anos 50 e marcou o estrelato de Juan Manuel Fangio, eterno campeão da categoria. A nova equipe irá se chamar Mercedes Grand Prix.</p>
<p>Já a McLaren, parceira desde 1995, comprará, nos próximos dois anos, os 40% da escuderia que a Mercedes possui atualmente. O time vai manter o nome da montadora e o patrocínio pelos próximos seis anos.</p>
<p>Ross Brawn continuará como diretor da equipe. Ele e Nick Fry mantém 24,9% da Brawn. Só que esse negócio irá mexer com os pilotos da Brawn. A Mercedes-Benz não tem interesse em manter Jenson Button. Ela quer criar uma dupla de pilotos alemães. Anda sendo especulado que a vaga principal ficará com Nico Rosberg, e a segunda será de Nick Heidfeld.</p>
<p>Mas Button não ficará desamparado. Recentemente ele fez uma visita na fábrica da McLaren, o que indica que ele poderá ir para essa equipe. Será a primeira vez que dois campeões mundiais correrão pela mesma equipe desde 1989, com a dupla Senna e Prost.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p><em>I know this blog is normally about journalistic issues, but I thought I&#8217;d do something else for a change and join an ongoing debate about the sports icon of the noughties.</em></p>
<p><em>After <a href="http://alaintolhurst.wordpress.com/">Alfie </a>set the ball rolling with <a href="http://alaintolhurst.wordpress.com/2009/10/25/the-gift-that-keeps-on-giving/">his nomination of Ryan Giggs</a>, a number of my coursemates have given their suggestions, so I thought I&#8217;d throw my hat into the ring. It&#8217;s kind of course-related I guess.</em></p>
<p><em>So, without further delay, I present to you my nominee for the sporting icon of the decade&#8230;</em></p>
<p><strong>Michael Schumacher</strong></p>
<p>They say a sign of the very best sportsmen is not what they do on the field of play, but rather how much they are missed when they depart.</p>
<p>It is with such a maxim in mind that I present to you my entry to the sports icon of the decade poll, Hurth’s finest (sorry Ralf), Herr Michael Schumacher.</p>
<p><strong>King of the Road<br />
</strong></p>
<p>Since ‘Schumi’ <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bGheqsPm58">retired from Formula 1</a> in 2006, the sport has seen three different drivers claim the crown, each with a different manufacturer.</p>
<p>Many argue that it is the quality of car which has contributed to world titles for Kimi Raikkonen, Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, as two of these men won by extremely narrow margins and none have yet managed to retain their crown.</p>
<p>Consistency was no problem for Schumacher, however, as he relegated four different drivers into second place over his five year winning streak, taking the title by a margin as high as 58 in 2001.</p>
<p><strong>Button/tapping</strong></p>
<p>And when the German was in the driver’s seat, the sport was all about results and great performances.</p>
<p>Now this has given way to <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2007/aug/06/motorsports.sport">petty squabbling</a>, <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/sports/motor/formula1/2007-09-13-mclaren-punishment_N.htm">spying scandals</a> and <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8048112.stm">budget controversies</a>. It seems that without a milestone like Schumi against which decisions could be measured, F1 has lost its way.</p>
<p>Countless footballers and rugby players may claim their team suffered as a result of their departure, but to claim their sport went downhill? Only one man can do that.</p>
<p><strong>We Germans aren&#8217;t all smiles and sunshine</strong></p>
<p>But it would be unfair, not to mention stupid, to merely look at the post-Michael era when this article is meant to be about the man himself.</p>
<p>Of course the facts speak for themselves. In the years 2000-2006 Schumacher won five world titles, finishing second and third on the two occasions he missed out on the biggest prize.</p>
<p>And in 2004 he scored a remarkable 148 championship points, including an unprecedented 13 wins.</p>

<p>This of course ignores completely the two world championships he won while with Benetton in the 90s, which helped contribute to a record 91 grands prix over the course of his career.</p>
<p>And while few in the business would blame Michael for remaining stoic and serious after his retirement, he has shown a lighter side and a willingness to have fun away from the wheel, as this final clip demonstrates.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Um dos sócios da equipe McLaren, Ron Dennis não se mostrou preocupado com a retirada gradual da Mercedes como parceira até a temporada de 2015.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">O dirigente, que conduziu esta parceria até a temporada passada e pode retornar à categoria no próximo ano após um campeonato sabático, ressaltou que uma equipe de F-1 não pode se restringir aos circuitos e precisa expandir suas operações.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">&#8220;Esta é uma situação de vitória ou vitória, tanto para Mercedes quanto para a Daimler. Vinha citando uma crença minha de que, para sobreviver no século 21, uma equipe precisa ser mais que uma equipe na F-1&#8243;, explicou.</p>

Mercedes has sold its shares back to McLaren and instead bought a majority into Brawn. The Brawn team, 2009 F1 Champion both constructors and driver, will now be renamed Mercedes Grand Prix. McLaren will continue to use Mercedes engines as the contract is valid till 2015. But one feels that with Mercedes having its own team, their self-interest will motivate them to give more attention to their own engines than to McLaren. While reading through all the newsprint that has been consumed over his 20-years of cricket celebration, there is one personality trait that most people from Hayden to Amitabh Bachchan observed &#8211; his relative composure and dignity on such issues. I reckon SRT is simply going to shrug and move on. It is too petty for him. Anyway, for him immediately, there is a test match (where he was out 3rd ball) going on.</p>

<p>I am not going to include (copyright) detailed descriptions of what it costs to race Formula 1. If you are already not familiar with Formula 1 racing you can go to the sites listed below for more details.</p>
<p>My objective is to get the start-up funding for a Formula 1 team (of if you have other interests, possibly Nascar, Top Fuel Drag Racing, Offshore  Powerboats….How much funding is required ? a cost-effective Formula 1 team would require $90Million USD (which would pay for 2 years of racing and 1 year of “start-up” work)…this is very cost-effective considering current budgets for Formula 1 teams…Ferrari wins and at what cost ? $440 Million per year ! </p>
<p>Nascar and Drag Racing you are looking at half of that cost ( $45 milion USD ).</p>

O francês, que trabalhou como piloto de testes dz equipa entre 2003 e 2005, afirmou à imprensa canadiana que não contava mais com a hipótese de estar na <a href="http://esporte.ig.com.br/grandepremio/formula1/2009/11/16/montagny+mantem+esperancas+de+encontrar+vaga+na+renault++9104967.html#"></a>F1 na próxima temporada, mas que agora confia na possibilidade de conseguir uma vaga na Renault ao lado de Robert Kubica.</p>
<p>&#8220;<strong>Há uma possibilidade real e nós já discutimos isso várias vezes</strong>&#8220;, assegurou Montagny. &#8220;<strong>Eu, particularmente, não esperava encontrar-me na lista, por isso concentrei-me no meu programa de Le Mans, mas surpresas como estas podem acontecer</strong>&#8220;, salientou.</p>
<p>&#8220;<strong>Eu acredito que não estive em condições muito boas com Flavio, mas esta é uma equipa com a qual eu trabalhei, ajudei a mudar e a vencer o Campeonato Mundial [de Construtores, em 2005]</strong>&#8220;, acrescentou Montagny.</p>
<p>Por fim, o francês declarou que torce para que a Renault continue na F1 no ano que vem, numa referência à reunião que a equipa fez, logo após o anúncio da saída da Toyota.</p>

<p><strong>Apesar de ser provável o regresso de Kimi Raikkonen à McLaren a verdade é que o acordo tarda em firmar-se. Quer a McLaren ou o piloto finlandês tentam fazer vingar os seus pontos de vista, sendo que o problema passa essencialmente pelo facto de Kimi Raikkonen não pretender perder muito tempo com acções promocionais, e querer disputar mais ralis, a sua nova paixão.</strong></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Curioso, no mínimo, poderá ser o relacionamento entre Hamilton e Raikkonen, caso as duas partes cheguem a acordo. Um leitor do AutoSport questionou Luís Vasconcelos, sobre como poderá ser o relacionamento entre ambos, e a resposta é no mínimo curiosa:</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">&#8220;O relacionamento de Kimi Rakkonen com Lewis Hamilton será igual ao que o finlandês tem tido com todos os seus companheiros de equipa &#8211; inexistente. Isto porque Raikkonen é uma ilha no &#8216;paddock&#8217; da F1, à qual apenas os Robertson, que se ocupam da sua carreira, Toni Villander, que o acompanha quando não está a correr nos GT, Mark Amall, seu fisioterapeuta e um ou dois jornalistas finlandeses têm acesso permanente. De resto, Raikkonen é um pouco mais aberto com meia dúzia de pessoas que conhece há mais tempo, mas mesmo dentro das equipas que integra é um mistério para a maior parte dos seus elementos.&#8221;</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">&#8220;Confesso que adoraria ver o confronto entre Hamilton e Raikkonen com carros idênticos, sobretudo se o MP4/25 não for naturalmente subvirador, pois neste caso o nórdico nunca será competitivo. Com um carro neutro ou sobrevirador, Raikkonen será complicado de bater e é por isso que gostaria muito do ver ao lado de outro sobredotado como Hamilton.&#8221;</p>

Assim, a escuderia comdanda por Ross Brawn deve passar a ser a equipe oficial da empresa alemã, como já admitiu o CEO Dieter Zetsche. Com isso, a McLaren se torna somente sua parceira para fornecimento de motores &#8211; e nada mais.</p>
<p><!--more-->Com a mudança, a equipe britânica passa a se chamar Mercedes Grand Prix. Jenson Button, por ser campeão do mundo, deve ser um dos pilotos, ao lado do alemão Nico Rosberg. Na parte técnica, Ross Brawn continua como diretor, ao lado do engenheiro Nick Fry. Até uma projeção do monoposto já foi divulgada pela marca em seu site oficial.</p>
<p>A aquisição revela o atrito existente entre as duas companhias. Primeiro, a parceria na produção do SLR McLaren se encerrou. Depois, registraram-se alguns problemas de comunicação entre as partes. Agora, a Mercedes-Benz passará a operar com equipe própria.</p>
<p>Ao que tudo indica, antes de 2011 a McLaren recomprará os 40% de seus ativos pertencentes à Mercedes-Benz. Além disso, é possível que se encerre a parceria de fornecimento antes do prazo firmado, que é 2015 até o momento.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Yes, it seems the rumours were true, Mercedes-Benz has indeed bought the double-championship winning Brawn team and it&#8217;s aiming to return to Formula 1 as a manufacturer since 1955. The German giant has bought about 75% of the English team and they say that Ross Brawn will remain team principal. They will also continue their deal with McLaren as they must supply engines for free for another 6 years to them.</p>
<p>Over the next two-year period McLaren will buy back actions worth 40% back from Mercedes. The new Mercedes-Benz GP team will be also based in the current Brawn GP factory in Brackley. The thing is, I just don&#8217;t understand what Mercedes is trying to play here. They will return to F1 by buying a team that has won a few weeks ago both world championships.</p>
<p>You might think: ok, that&#8217;s very intelligent then, they chose a winning team so it&#8217;s very good. You see, in F1, development takes time, so in general, the team which has the most time, experience and money turns up with the best car for the next year. Now Brawn have been fighting for the championship until the penultimate race so they kept their eyes focused on the 2009 car while others like Ferrari for instance had already began their development on their 2010 car.</p>
<p>The driver lineup will also be a problem. Rumours say that there will be an all-British layout at McLaren : Button and Hamilton, and an all-German layout at Mercedes: Heidfeld and Rosberg. Imagine that: the Germans will be laying the red carpet for each other in the ultimate fair-play team game begging each other to overtake while the Brits will be having a massive fight for who should be nr 1 .</p>

<p><strong>A decisão da Toyota em abandonar a Fórmula 1, deixou Trulli, Glock, Kobayashi e Nakajima no mercado de pilotos para 2010. Mas tanto o italiano como o alemão têm quase garantida a participação no próximo Mundial, Trulli com a Lotus e Glock com a Renault, se não se registarem surpresas de maior.</strong></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Já a situação dos dois jovens japoneses é mais complicada, pois os dois discutiam o volante do segundo Toyota e agora nem sequer sabem se terão o apoio financeiro da marca nipónica para prosseguirem a sua carreira.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Os dois foram oferecidos pelo responsável do programa de jovens pilotos da Toyota, Yoshinori Arimatsu, à Lotus, mas também à Sauber, mas se Nakajima tem poucas hipóteses de encontrar uma vaga para 2010, apesar de em algumas ocasiões ter sido bastante rápido, Kobayashi entusiasma os responsáveis de algumas equipas, depois de duas provas convincentes na sua estreia em Grandes Prémios.</p>

Em primeiro lugar porque ainda aguardar a confirmação oficial da Toyota de que não vai participar no Mundial de 2010 nem vender a sua equipa.</strong></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Depois porque vai requerer que o misterioso grupo Qadbak dê garantias acerca da origem dos seus fundos, pois a sua entrada recente no futebol inglês, com o Notts County, não tem sido isenta de controvérsia.</p>

<p><strong>A McLaren vai manter os motores Mercedes pelo menos mais seis anos, até ao fim de 2015, mesmo com a compra da Brawn GP por parte da Mercedes, o que permite o regresso às pistas dos &#8220;Flechas de Prata&#8221;, os monolugares oficiais da Mercedes.</strong></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">A Mercedes bem tentou terminar o contrato que tem com a McLaren, mas teve forte oposição por parte de Ron Dennis e Mansour Ojjeh, que lutaram afincadamente pelos seus direitos pelo que no final, uma mão lava a outra. Dieter Zetsche, CEO da marca alemã, vai vender a participação da Mercedes na equipa inglesa, de que detém 40 por cento, nos próximos dois anos, e em troca, os homens da equipa de Ron Dennis, Mansour Ojjeh e o grupo Mumkalatat (accionistas da McLaren), terão motores até 2015.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Os factores que contribuíram para esta situação passam pela a construção dum carro de estrada pela McLaren, que entra em concorrência directa com alguns dos seus produtos e feito contra a vontade da marca alemã; o veto ao fornecimento de motores à Red Bull que impede a Mercedes de se ligar a Sebastian Vettel, que começa a ser muito popular na Alemanha; e as dificuldades que a marca de Woking estava a colocar ao novo relacionamento entre a Mercedes e a Brawn, ao ponto de ter tentado impedir a marca de Estugarda de publicitar o seu sucesso em conjunto com a equipa de Ross Brawn.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">The British team says Button, who is out of contract after winning this year&#8217;s title with Brawn GP, made the visit after returning from Japan on Friday.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">The 29-year-old Briton took a substantial pay cut last season to drive for the former Honda team, which is currently in talks to re-sign him in 2010. Button would pair with 2008 world champion Lewis Hamilton at McLaren.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Former McLaren driver Kimi Räikkönen, who has been replaced by Fernando Alonso at Ferrari, also visited McLaren earlier this week.</p>
