A talented young Somerset racing driver has been spreading the message of inward investment body Into Somerset.

Euan Hankey, 22, who has been competing in the Formula Renault UK Championship for CRS Racing this year, has promoted Into Somerset with a logo on his car. Euan’s manager and adviser, Roger Phillips, is an Into Somerset ambassador and runs the Somerset-based Management and Motor-Sport Consultancy, Action Resources Ltd.

Euan, who was born and lives in Somerset, hopes he can publicise the county’s business benefits next year as he takes part in the 2010 Porsche Carrera Cup GB, part of the British Touring Car Championship programme. Euan has just been awarded a scholarship by Porsche to participate in this prestigious series.

He says, “My mother runs a successful small business, so we know first-hand that Somerset is a terrific place to launch and grow your business. “It’s no wonder that more and more companies are looking to be based here and I can really help to put Somerset on the map as a great business location.

“I am really happy to support Into Somerset. I grabbed hold of the opportunity with both hands. I hope the association will continue and I hope to get more involved.”

Euan is tipped for the top. The British Racing Drivers’ Club has named him a “rising star” and he is hoping to emulate Somerset’s F1 World Champion Jenson Button and become a professional racing driver.

But he is also very realistic. Euan has completed a degree in The Business of Real Estate Management and recently returned from a gap year in Asia where he has also been instructing and mentoring a young Chinese racer.

After nearly two years away from the track, Euan raced in Formula Renault UK at Silverstone in the summer as a substitute for an injured driver and won the coveted Driver of the Day award. He ended the season at Brands Hatch, finishing fifth and eighth.

Euan was selected for the scholarship from six finalists in a two-day evaluation process at the Porsche Experience Centre, at Silverstone, which involved driving the 420bhp 911GT3 Cup car as well as a fitness test, interviews and addressing the media.

Il 4 dicembre Raffaele Marciello, che corre con licenza italiana, sarà premiato  come miglior pilota italiano WSK (kart) in occasione del WSK GRAN GALA’ che si terra presso Lo Sporting Club di Monza. La stagione della WSK  Series si è da poco conclusa, dopo sette appassionanti tappe che, da febbraio a novembre, hanno attraversato l’Europa. La Commissione Sportiva Automobilistica Italiana ha voluto istituire in WSK un proprio riconoscimento per valorizzare i piloti italiani. Con questa motivazione è nata la International Cup by CSAI, da assegnare ai migliori piloti del vivaio tricolore e Raffaele è uno dei quattro piloti scelti. Ai quattro piloti sarà offerta la partecipazione al Corso Federale CSAI, con candidatura al Supercorso CSAI 2010. E’ inoltre in preparazione una ulteriore iniziativa, in favore del migliore dei quattro premiati che emergerà dal Corso Federale: si tratta di una opportunità che verrà però svelata a Monza, nel corso della premiazione.

My name is Ilsa Vega from South Jersey who has been blessed with two beautiful granddaughters. I would like to share with you my youngest granddaughter, who is two months old, amazing story.

My granddaughter, who was born in June of 2009, had the opportunity of being breast feed for only a few weeks due to her mother having complications.

My beautiful granddaughter was immediately introduced to the conventional formula (Lipil). I immediately started to see a transformation in a negative way. The baby started to have an awful greenish diarrhea with mucus. She became dehydrated and her skin became yellowish gray in color. She was also vomiting with full force projecting across the bed. The baby’s cry touched my soul. I never saw anything like this. I recall having my son who is now 31 years old, having similar symptoms, I trusted in his doctor and thinking my baby was safe, but now I see that I was wrong.

When my granddaughter was taken to her doctor’s visit, the doctor encouraged my son and daughter-in-law to continue feeding the baby formula, even when telling him about her symptoms. This time he ordered (Similac Soy). The outcome was even worse. The baby broke out in hives; her vomit and diarrhea were frequent. Her constant crying showed the signs of pain and distress. I was devastated that the doctors concern was zero to none for the baby. The interest was more for his payment then the life and well being of my granddaughter.

As a concern grandparent, I immediately started to do my research through the internet. I prayed that my Lord would enlighten me with information to save my granddaughter. The search was over, I was blessed in finding the Weston A. Price Foundation (Sally Fallon) and The Liberation Diet by Kevin Brown which had all the information I needed to save my granddaughter.

I immediately shared this information with my son and daughter in-law who were some-what reluctant and caught between natural remedies and the conventional life style which they were used too. I did not stop in provided them with information and sharing stories of natural results. They became attentive with my information. It only takes to plant the seed and knowledge will grow which will lead to taking actions to save a child. My son and daughter in-law decided to go with the natural remedies to feed the baby. In less than four days, the baby came back to its original state by not crying, vomiting or having diarrhea. Her color was a beautiful rosy pink. We were proud with the results.

Again my son and daughter in-law took the baby for the second visit with the Pediatrician. My son and daughter in-law who were proud of the results shared them with the doctor who to their surprise, became furious, irate and refused to listen to my son. He reprimanded my son and immediately arranged for three more vaccinations for the baby!

The doctor then left the room, came back with a can of formula and insisted that they feed the baby with it. My son was devastated and most of all hurt with the treatment his baby and he received from this conventional doctor who only cared for himself. Upon arriving home, my son and daughter in-law trashed the formula because that is what they felt, that it was trash being fed to babies.

Crying with happiness, my son, daughter in-law and I, decided to go full steam ahead with the Foundations formula and no more vaccinations for now. Today, the baby will be reaching her third month and has a beautiful radiant look and happy gestures with no side effects.

I would like to introduce you a simple formula for getting square of any number ending 5.

(x5)2= x*(x+1)25 This is the formula.

Here x is the digit prefix to 5 of the given number. On right hand side x*(x+1) is only prefix to 25.

Suppose 25 is the given number. Hence x=2

to get square of 25 write 25 on right hand side.

Now multiply 2 by (2+1) i.e. 3, we got 6. Write this 6 as prefix to 25. Here is the answer 625.

Now consider 105 as a given number which is to be squared.

First write 25 on right hand side. Now multiply 10 by 11. We got 110. Write 110 at the left side of 25 the number is 11025. This is the square of given number 105.

We can try with another number. Take 175.

As explained earlier write 25 at right side. Now multiply 17 by 18 answer is 306, write it as prefix of 25, the answer is 30625.

I was tweaking my budget spreadsheet and trying to figure a way to display the percentage of money spent to income earned. I figured the easy was was to divide spending cell by income cell. For example, my household expenditures are totaled in C28 and my total income is listed in H4 so =C28/H4. However, since this was a new budget sheet, the cell displayed #div/0. That looks sloppy and distracting to me so I did some research and figured out how to get a blank cell. I found a formula that does exactly that. It is an IF formula which I didn’t know existed until to me, that’s the fun of learning a new program. The formula is =IF(H4=0,”",C28/H4). The commas separate the arguments.  The first argument sets the condition, which can be either true or false. The second argument is what to do if the formula is true and the third argument is what to do if it is false. The “” leave a blank cell, therefore if H4 is 0, than the cell is simply left blank.

My daughter’s birthday was saturday, the 24th. We went home the following monday afternoon. I felt like I had a fairly good handle on the breastfeeding by then, though my nipples were sore already. 

The nurse at the Public Health Clinic gave me a nipple shield the next day at our appointment, to help latch Eve onto my nipple properly. But my daughter’s voracious appetite had me in tears more than once, toes curling in pain. 

A few days after our original visit to the Clinic, another nurse called us to check up on Eve’s weight. I guess the first nurse we saw had called this one to give her the heads-up on us. Eve was still pooping sticky blackish-green meconium, and wasn’t peeing nearly enough. The nurse made it sound urgent that we needed to come in to get her weighed right away, so off we went. We were there within the hour.

I was freaked out. I was tired and emotional and worried about our daughter. My nipples hurt so much – how could I possibly get enough milk to her without her chewing my nipples right off? 

The nurse told me what I wanted to hear: “Just give her a bit of formula. It will get her weight up and give you a break.” 

In hindsight, it probably wasn’t the best thing to do. We bought the formula and started giving her a little bit after each feeding. Eventually, however, she started to get lazy. The nipples on the bottles we have are quite a bit easier than my own, and she gives up too quickly. 

I am trying to give her more breast than bottle, but it’s hard. It’s a vicious circle, too. The more she drinks from the bottle, the lazier she gets. The lazier she gets, the quicker she is to scream her head off when I put her to the boob because she’s frustrated. And when she’s screaming and not latching even though there is obviously milk there for her, what am I supposed to do? Starve my kid? Let her scream? I give her a bottle instead. 

I read on a message board when I consulted other October 2009 moms about my dilemma: every ounce of formula I give her is another ounce my body thinks it can quit making. Breastfeeding is all about supply and demand, and if my daughter isn’t telling my body to make milk for her, it won’t.

Feeding little Eve is a huge source of anxiety for me. Alex says I shouldn’t worry about it, but every time I give her a bottle I feel like a lazy mother. I wonder if there isn’t more I can be doing to make sure my breast milk gets in her little belly. It is the best thing for her, after all.

(I realize some moms CAN’T breastfeed. I’m not trying to start anything by posting it.)

I just found out about a new documentary coming out which will highlight the dangers of widespread formula feeding, as evidence has shown in the United States. I look forward to watching it when it is released, but I’m not sure of the date yet. Here is the documentary’s website.

Now you have all the component costs, labor costs, capital costs and indirect costs (non-direct labor and consumables). This provides the cost accounting group with everything they need to produce a simple financial model that will give you a high level picture of the project. It is not the final analysis, but the first analysis that will tell you whether you should look deeper or not.  If the analysis looks favorable you will look deeper, if you will look elsewhere for savings.

The financial models we have used are a set of nested spreadsheets. Below is a gross oversimplification of a typical analysis, but demonstrate the principle.

Compound(or formula) cost spreadsheet. The compounding operation takes 2 laborers so you spread those costs across the total product of compound. For example you will produce 1MM kg of compounds with 2 laborers( $100K) so the labor costs are $0.10/kg. This spreadsheet feeds to SKU spreadsheet. Cost accounting should also add anyother know variable overhead.

SKU spreadsheet includes amount of compound needed per SKU, the package and closure, carton, pallet, etc. The remaining 4 laborer cost are spread over the unit volume as appropriate for each package type/size. The $50K  is consumables is spread appropriately where it belongs. Every piece that going into the product as a palletized, shrinkwrapped pallet in your warehouse. Again,variable overhead should also be added.You now have a total unit cost to compare to your out-sourced, or purchased complete cost. This will feed the spreadsheet that will generate the cost saving for that particular SKU.

You have a total cost for the SKU both in-sourced and out-sourced and know the volume of that SKU. This generates a savings number for that SKU. You do this for two compounds (formula) and 6 different SKUs of two different package type.  Package type A is 7% cheaper to produce in-house, and package type B is 10% cheaper to produce in-house. This feed the spreadsheet for the entire product line.

This is where the assumed proportionality is used.You sell $5MM of package type A and $5MM of package type B  for a savings of  $350K and $500K respectively for a total on $850K annual savings.

The next part vary depending on how your finance group handles thing, but in general a 2 year or less payback is consider acceptable.  So we have $850K savings and $850K capital for a 1 year payback. If it is looked at on an after tax basis and you are in a 50% tax bracket( if there is such a thing), you would have a two year payback.

Looks like any interesting project- requires a more in-depth analysis. This analysis should be able to be completed by an experienced and committed group in 1-2 months. The assumed proportionality takes a huge amount of time and detail out of the process. It is also where the anal retentive will have the most difficulty.The purpose of this analysis is not to provide the last analysis, but a quick and reliable way to get a big picture view of a project.

How detailed the final analysis will be up to the you.

At this point, you will invariably have some SKUs that didn’t fit into the model.  Different package type that you will not be capable of filling, or compound (formula) of such low volume that you will not be making them. The next part will try to deal with what is left.

Ok, you’ve selected the high volume formulae for costing, and several high volume package configurations for costing. You’ve gotten price quotes for each component in a volume representative  of  the entire product line (e.g. 2 million 16 oz PE bottles screen printed with 25 different labels with closure Y and 3 million PE squeeze tubes, screen printed with closure X with 30 different labels).

Now you need to be able to manufacture and package as much of the product line as you’ve chosen to do. You need to work with mfging management and engineering to get the equipment needed quoted, installed and integrated. If you have good mfging people (as I’ ve always been blessed with) they will design the mixing, filling and packaging process and quote out each piece of equipment needed.  For example, they quote out a mixer with any automation needed for material handling and process controls, bulk storage tanks and process piping to filling. You may have a filler and capper already but now need a palletizer. They will provide an estimate for all installation needs( building modifications, power needs, etc). They think the entire process thru and quote everything you need. Smaller companies may not have all the resources for this. There are consultants who can do this part for you at reasonable costs. They generate a number for the total capital costs of the project- $850K. It doesn’t have to be perfect at this point, it just needs to be representative. The real number might be $800K or it might be $950K. That is close enough for the first cut.

Now mfging management also need to generate a labor cost for the process. This could be as simple as you will needs 3 people per shift for a 2 shift operation for a total of 6 people at 80% of the rated production rate of the system. You know a fully loaded laborer costs $50K for a total direct labor cost of $300K. At this point you don’t need much more detail than that.

Also, they need to think thru any indirect labor costs such as supervision, material handling or additional QC needs. Lets say you don’t need any of this for this exercise.

Lastly consider supplies for the processes- cleaners or sanitizers or solvents for clean out between runs, any specialty disposables for the process or for QC testing. My experience is that these are generally very small, but not always. Lets say you find $50K in annual expenses for this class of expenses.

Now, all this gets fed to your cost accounting/finance  group to compile and digest into the financial model.

I usually review new films on this blog, but I passed on a chance to see “Pirate Radio” this weekend, and with good reason: “Almost Famous” was barely tolerable, so the idea of “Almost Famous on a Boat” seemed a bit too precious. Whether or not it was that is irrelevant; even moviegoers in its native England stayed away in droves. If a film on such a small budget with such a big cast and such good music can’t make a profit, beware. Besides, I find rock movies in general a bit too hard to swallow as legitimate entertainment.

Anyway, I decided to lay out my first impression of the 2007 American cut of Guy Ritchie’s post-Snatch film “Revolver.” To be delicate, I’ll borrow a phrase from Richard Hammond: “Ambitious but Rubbish.” To be not-so-delicate: It made our heads hurt, and after what seemed like four hours we had to turn it off before they repeated the “formula” for the umpteenth time.

To paraphrase Ian Malcolm, Guy Ritchie seems bent on wielding the concepts and ideas of Kabbalah like a kid who’s found his dad’s gun. It’s fine to borrow religious concepts; Pi did a fine job of it; in only 84 minutes it was able to at least appear profound and mystique-y and dredge up questions. Revolver has no such success, because it doesn’t care if the audience is confused, and seems to relish their confusion Also, the film itself seems to be as confused as we are, so shows us Turkish going through a windshield backwards really slowly. I also don’t see why Guy Ritchie had to make a third film about professional criminals, especially one that was far worse than the other two.

And why did Jason Statham have to narrate this film as well? The whole time it sounded like Snatch with all the good bits removed and replaced with seemingly infinite number of scenes featuring Ray Liotta in various states of undress trying too hard to express his anger and frustration to his unflappable lieutenant, followed by a seemingly infinite number of scenes of Andre 3000 (dressed as…Andre 3000) apparently reading cue cards in monotone, punctuated by variations of “Shut the Fuck up” from Vincent Pastore. Again and again, Turkish tries to get an explanation out of these guys, and hits a wall. So do we. Interest is rapidly lost.

Yeah, there’s a white masculine pillar, feminine black pillar, and the Turkish green pillar in the middle, and chess has 32 pieces, ooooooooooo, so mystical. Too bad it all feels cheap and irrelevant and futile amongst all the horrible acting, longwinded musical interludes, and lack of direction. It feels, empty; hollow; a bunch of overly-styled nothing.

Maybe i just need to give it another watch, as is typical of Ritchie films, but to be frank, I and everyone watching wished we had stopped it a bit sooner, since there was still a half-hour of the stuff left to watch and we were already turned off of it. A rewatch sound like and even bigger waste of time.

I have no doubt Sherlock Holmes will be better (if for no other reason than Downey Jr.,) But after two very good and very watchable crime capers and one absolute stinker, my confidence in Guy Ritchie was definitely shaken. And he was with Madonna, who just looks wierd nowadays. Not so easy on the eyes anymore.

So yeah, I played Russian Roulette with “Revolver” and lost, badly. We had to watch “La Jetee” afterwards just to get the bad taste out of our mouths. Now that’s a movie…and only 28 minutes long.
