For New Year’s Eve, I had originally intended on making a confetti cake. Is anything cuter than a confetti cake? Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve loved the rainbow colors of the cake. I always had so much fun stirring the sprinkles into the confetti cake frosting, too.

Instead of making a confetti cake, however, I decided to make homemade fortune cookies. I just got the book 1001 Cupcakes, Cookies and Other Tempting Treats for Christmas. It has so many incredible recipes that I can’t wait to try – from chocolate malt ball muffins to molten chocolate cupcakes to beignet donuts (ever since I saw The Princess and the Frog, I’ve been dying to try making them!) and rich chocolate eclairs. I would definitely check out this book – it’s absolutely packed with recipes – I pretty much marked every page as “must-try recipes.”

Check out the book for the recipe, or search the plethora of online baking sites to find a good one. This recipe called for superfine sugar, egg whites, peanut oil for greasing, etc.

You can only do two max at a time, because shaping them takes a while, and these suckers cool and harden very quickly!!!!!!!!!

Pat out the circles so they’re about three inches in diameter – make sure they are rather thin (almost paper thin), otherwise you will get a very thick cookie with more of a chewy texture than your traditional fortune cookie.

Clearly, I had a bit of trouble shaping them in the beginning. I didn’t realize just how quickly they start to harden – you seriously have only about ten seconds or so to shape them before they start to harden!

Here’s what I learned about shaping fortune cookies:

If you’re baking them in batches of two, always shape the brownest one first, because it hardens first (and once it hardens, it will be harder to try to shape the browner one)

To shape a cookie:

Flip the cookie so the side that touched the baking sheet is now facing up (you want the pretty, smooth side on the outside!)

place the fortune towards the middle of the cookie

fold the cookie in half, so it is a semi circle. Pinch the edges together.

Stick your index fingers in the holes in the sides of the cookie, and place the cookie on the rim of a cup

Push down on the cookie, making a dent in the middle of the semi circle (the not pinched together side).

I suggest wearing thin gloves of some sort, because the cookies are very hot (the oven is 400 degrees) and you will burn your hands as you are trying to shape them. You will not get a very attractive cookie when your burning hands are occupying your focus. =)

All in all, I’d say these don’t look too bad for my first go. =)

They tasted really good, too. A bit more sugary and vanilla-y than a traditional fortune cookie, but pretty darn close.

For the fortunes, I looked up cutesy little sayings online, like “help! I’m trapped in a Chinese bakery!” and “It’s about time I got out of that cookie!” I also wrote traditional fortunes, like “You will have a very joyful 2010.”

We opened them just after midnight (After the silly string fight and confetti flinging), to see what our new year would bring us. =)

I can’t believe it is actually 2010 – my graduation year! Ever since I was a kid I’ve known this year would come, but it seemed so far ahead in the distance. Now it’s actually here!

These fortune cookies would be a great gift for a friend. Make the fortunes inside jokes between the two of you, or some lyrics from her favorite songs. Drizzle them in white chocolate for a fancy twist. You can usually find Chinese food-style carryout containers at your local dollar store – they would be a great way to package these treats!!

These cookies were a near fail. My first two came out way too thick – they crumbled and broke as I tried to shape them. Then, I couldn’t figure out how to shape the cookies fast enough, because my hands were burning…..whew! I gave it my best try, though, and I think they turned out alright!

I hope you all had a very happy, safe new year!

we have fortune cookies, it’s a new year, you will be hungry in an hour

I don’t know which is harder – finding a craft I want to do or this, the blogging.

Inspiration is not with me often, it seems.

Once again we have a food theme – this week it was fortune cookies.

Or maybe those samosas (Have some authentic homemade ones (Hi Shahina!) and you will think you have died and gone to culinary heaven)

It started like this:

Looking slightly over cooked for a lobster, but just right if they were cheerios (not the cereal from the US – if they looked like that it would count as cruel and unusual)

There are over 60 of these little felt , er, things. All cut out and stitched to impersonate foods, or petals even. Or maybe the sea fluke (ponder the failed scarf).

Then I turned them into this:

Not instantly mind you – there was angst. There was gnashing of teeth and stabbing of self with small pointy needle that was not meant to do the job it was being made to do. There was stitching and unstitching and re-stitching and then pinning and even a little self talk about being too controlling of placement of cookies.

Pretty excellent, yeah? (If I do say so myself)

Here is another of more ( it’s like a peep show)

I can not take any credit for this marvellousness – other than my own crafty-ness pictured above. I found a how-to-do tutorial through WhipUp, a craft site I constantly visit that took me to here.

The Fortunate Cushie (does that work?) took no time at all to make. Even with the Drama Queen-esh-ness. I think, with someone expressing an interest in this, it would make a great home warming present. That or some split red gum.

On to other things: In case it you missed it, it’s a New Year. (Yes, someone could miss it. It’s easily done.)

Everyone is wishing everyone a Happy New Year and everyone’s wishes to be granted and all things light and beautiful to come to fruition. I could wish the same things for you too.

(I wonder if everyone’s wishes end up cancelling up all the other wishes? Like the last wish made on your behalf is the one you end up with, and if that person isn’t a very good wish maker, you know, not putting in a great deal of effort or thought, then this would explain the less than stellar year’s that we all have)

I think that with my wish, I am going to say: I hope that for this year you are given something very valuable. To you. Something that you will bring out of your special storage spot in your head and heart to study and examine and to think on time and again. That this thing of value is something that one day you can share with someone who may just need to know what you learned. I do realise what I am wishing is most likely going to be quite horrible for a moment, or a time. But you will be so much more interesting and attractive because of it.

Full of it, aren’t I? <grin> Maybe you can wish me better blogging mojo?

Thank you for visiting. It’s lovely to see you. Yes, yes, feel free to use that cushion. Just don’t spill your drink on it. Who knows when you will get another drink?

Princess Hibbie

– just finished reading ‘The Messenger’ by Markus Zusak. Go read it. It’s good.

If you need a New Year’s resolution in a hurry, the New Year’s Resolution Generator is there for you. It’s been making the rounds on the internet, so people’s resolutions might start sounding familiar.

The NYR Generator is a great idea, but many of the resolutions it generates are platitudes, like the following:

This year, I will …

Appreciate nature.

Life life to the fullest.

Wake up earlier.

Spread joy.

Be happy and healthy.

If you get resolutions like this, keep going and you’ll find more creative ones like “Touch my toes,” “Bring a reusable bag to the grocery store,” “Learn Italian,” “Bake cookies from scratch,” and “High five the person sitting next to me.”

I imagine that writing the resolutions for this generator is a bit like writing fortune cookie fortunes, kind of a fun and quirky activity. Perhaps the creator of the generator could take suggestions of resolutions to add to the application for next year.

Hold on. I see a Contribute link at the bottom of the screen. When I click it, my email program wants to start, but I don’t have it set up because I don’t view email through a computer app; I view it online.

Ah. If I do a bit more digging and click the Blog link on the bottom, I come to the creator’s blog post about the NYR Generator. The creator is Monina Velarde, a graphic designer living in Illinois, and she is taking suggestions on resolutions to add to the Generator. Have at it kids. You can either leave comments on her blog post or send her an email (check Contact link on her website).

Me? I don’t make New Year’s resolutions. Instead, I set goals whenever I feel like it and work at them ’til I accomplish them or change goals. Seems easier that way.

Happy New Year!!!! Last year wasn’t too bad, but to be honest this past decade kind of sucked.

Happy New Year!!!! Last year wasn’t too bad, but to be honest this past decade kind of sucked. Then again since I graduated high school a decade ago this decade wasn’t supposed to go too well. This decade was the time period in which I was supposed to learn to be self sufficient and discover who I am. I believe that I did these things, and because of it I am now a happier adult like person who is ready to embark onto the next phase of including someone else in my life. This year is going to be wonderful. So what did we do this evening? Well, since Ryan’s dad couldn’t make it on Christmas he is going to be coming to dinner on New Years day. So I’ve spent today cleaning a little bit and relaxing and then I decided to make a cake.

Cake plus left overs that I put together in ramekins

Since I got new ramekins after Christmas I decided to use those for the scraps. I’ve found that I don’t like to waste cake if I can help it so I just put together the spare pieces from leveling the cake and put them in ramekins. It’s definitely great for when I’m making a cake for someone else and want to make sure that the whole thing tastes alright. I also got to use my wonderful new hexagonal cake pans that I got for a Christmas present from my future mother in law. I even made a mini cake that is absolutely adorable. In addition to all of this I figured that I needed something other than dessert kind of similar to the cookie place cards that I made for everyone at Christmas. This time Ryan and I decided to embark on making a new adventure and make some fortune cookies. The first few turned out a little bit miserable, but after a few duds we learned pretty efficiently what needed to be done. The recipe we got came from about.com and actually wasn’t too bad. It kind of tastes like a wafer thin sugar cookie. We created our own fortunes and put them in the cookies, and then when they were completely cooled we dipped them in chocolate.

Our fortune cookies once they were done

Other than creating sweet treats on New Years, we had a low key evening with just Ryan, Lauren, Erin and I, which was nice. We played Rock Band 2 for most of the night which was definitely entertaining. Lauren and Erin are both sick right now so it was definitely not a party but it was perfect to be able to spend it around my fiance, my sister, and my “adopted” little sister. Hopefully Erin’s illness goes away in the near future as well as Lauren’s. At least hopefully they will feel better by next Thursday when we all go to look at dresses for the wedding. I’m extremely excited about it especially since Ryan and I were checking out places that we could get married at today and looking at prices. I think this year is going to be very fortunate for us. (sorry for the pun but I just couldn’t help myself) Alright so this is all that I’m going to write for this evening. I hope that everyone had a happy and safe New Year.

One of the quirky things that I do is collect fortune cookie fortunes. Today at work my department o

One of the quirky things that I do is collect fortune cookie fortunes. Today at work my department ordered lunch from our favorite Chinese joint. As usual I cracked off half of the cookie to pull the fortune out, in preparation to finish it then read my ‘destiny’. For the first time I noticed that my cookie had more than one fortune. Not two but three fortunes were stuck together in there. I thought it was so cool that before I even ate the other half or read the fortunes I grabbed my phone to take a picture (Yes, I’m a dork).

Anyway, all three fortunes read: ” You will be singled out for promotion. “

Intially, I had some mixed emotions about my fortune(s). I’m thankful to be employed and all but I’m not so sure this gig is THE one. Yes, I was ready to drop kick a former project partner for not holding up her end of the workload but it was more about the principle than the actual job. On the other hand, a promotion would get a very warm welcome from my bank account. Hmmm… Ok, let me slow my roll. I can’t go planning shopping sprees based on seven words shoved into a tasteless cookies… Or can I? ha

We are coming to the end of the end/decade and like every prior year most people do a recap of all the significant events of the past 365 days. The biggest headlines of this year, the US having a Black president and the death of Michael Jackson, still leave me speechless so I’m not even going to try to recap. I’ll save that for every other form of media to do that. In my own little world I witnessed many tears and many smiles with the death of my father-in-law and the birth of my youngest child. Instead of the long sentimental/humorous memories of the year I’m going to post the stuff that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this past week. Ironically, some of my recent favorite things just prove the saying: what’s old is new again…

Biz Markie’s Radio Shack/Nikon commercial
My 2 year old jumped up and yelled “OH SNAP! Guess what I saw!” every single time this commercial came on. Hip Hop lover allready!

In 2009 I never though I’d say “that new Snoop song is my sh!t!” but I have!
Only Snoop could take an amped up song like It Takes Two, slow it down and make it fit like glove. The video is fiyah (the dance crews are excellent for keeping the kids’ attention) but all the poppin’ and jerkin’ is an optional form of entertainment because the cut is crazy smooth. Go ‘head Snoop. show them youngins how it’s done!

Chasing magic mushrooms, pouncing on turtleshelled dragons and searching for portals to secret worlds was how I spent countless hours back in 1986 but this is also how I spent hours of this past weekend. Over the years I’ve played sequels that tried to capture the fun of the first but finally I can say Super Mario Bros is BACK:

Gen Xer’s will appreciate the many features from the orginial Mario Bros but our kids are entertained but the crazy antics and excitement of the new obstacles. I will admit that 2 player mode will make you want to hurt somebody if your partner is wack but its still fun. [Sidebar: Wii Resort is a winner too. I have a twinge in my shoulder as a result of ninja style swordfight fighting but instead of taking a break I just switched my fighting stance. Yeah it's that's addictive. You have been warned!]

Welp, this will more than likely be my last entry of the year. I want to wish you all a safe and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

What I learned from Avatar Avatar…what a beautiful movie. I didn’t spend a lot of time

What I learned from Avatar

Avatar…what a beautiful movie. I didn’t spend a lot of time analyzing the perfectly structured and cliche plotline that a few critics warned about; the plotline didn’t need to be anything more than it was. I’ve never seen a 3D movie before, and while I enjoyed every second, I left the theater with a dizzy vertigo and didn’t feel right again for about an hour. There are a few things I have noted about the future (The movie is set in 2154, or something like that)

- Words I am surprised are still in use in 2154: “Daisy Cutter”

- Words I am not surprised are still in use in 2154: “Shit” , “Crap”

- Marines are particularly pissy in the future

- I could really use a flying dragon right about now

Don’t disappoint Kiki

Starbucks drive through in Butte, Montana. The shop is relatively new…I think it just opened this year. I notive that the baristas here are more bubbly and talkative than any other SBUX I have ever been to (and I’ve been to a lot!). This moment took the cake. I have to wonder if they have some weird management chain that is making the Butte store be more bubbly than others. Have you been to a SBUX recently? Are they acting over the top? Here is what happened as I pulled up to the drive through…

(Voice): “Hi, this is Kiki, welcome to Starbucks! Can I interest you in a creme brulee latte? Foamy and delicious! Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!”

Me: “No, thanks. I’d like a Venti triple latte, please.”

Kiki: “Okay, a triple Venti latte….how about a fresh slice of buttery delicious pound cake to go with that? Perhaps a wedge of our pumpkin spice bread? DELISH!”

Me: “No, I’ll just take the coffee. Thank you though.”

Kiki: “Awwwwwwwwwwwww. You disappoint Kiki.”

Songs I’ve been listening to lately

Instead of the “crazy hammering mess” I usually prefer, I’ve slowed things down for December…

Fugitive – David Gray. I’m not a huge DG fan but I do like a few of his tunes. On this one there is a simple piano in the background, and that is what gets stuck in my head for hours and hours and days and days.

21 Guns – Green Day. I can’t stand Green Day. I’ve seen them in concert 3 times but I hate them. I do like this little gem though.

The Lightning Strike – Snow Patrol – I think I like this sixteen minute wonder due to the buildup. Love it.

Fair – Remy Zero – I’ve loved this song ever since Garden State but for some reason I keep replaying in. Must be something in the water.

Gifts

Dave and Bryan sent me organic coffee beans and a Krups grinder. What a fantastic surprise, and could not have been more on the mark as to things that make me happy. Denise sent me ORANGES! I can’t wait until they get here. I have been wanting a real orange something terrible. Sharon sent me The Daring Book for Girls and wrote me a message inside. I love books with handwritten message inside. Carli sent me two neat wall decorations that were NOT shaped like tiki heads.

2010

I have 2010 built up in my mind. I just feel it. Something tremendous awaits.

Everyone that knows me, knows I don’t believe in “fortune-telling” about the FUTURE. Well, maybe a few TRENDS that may be pointing a Potential way Into or Towards the FUTURE, and maybe a bit of Clarity about the Past, but that’s as far as I’ll go! (the rest is up to You!)

Fortune-Telling Parakeet in Shiraz (www.flickr.com/photos/birdfarm

HOWEVER, here’s a FUN way (And, I do believe in FUN!) several Asian countries are changing the way consumers recycle their chopsticks. Yes, they recycle chopsticks the way we recycle soda cans…

Fortune-telling Machine for Recycling Chopsticks!

Fortunetelling machine for chopsticks recycling. In many Asian countries usual habit is to use single use chopsticks which are thrown away after single use. Numbers indicate: Just in Japan about 90 000 tons of used chopsticks finish in rubbish. It is amount of 25 billons chopsticks which connected make three times distance from earth to moon. In China 25.000.000 trees are being cut just for production of chopsticks. China produces about 45 billions chopsticks per year. Chopsticks export to Japan is large as 4 billions cubic meters of wood. Main problem with recycling is that restaurants owners don’t want extra duties. Other problem is that collecting bents for chopstick doesn’t exist.

According to fun theory people will recycle theirs chopsticks after a meal by themselves if it is fun. Thing that can help and we have it after a meal in “Chinese” restaurant in Europe and USA is fortune cookies. Combining these three things we can make “Chopsticks recycling fortunetelling machine”. Solution is container about 170 cm height with hole for inserting used chopsticks, LCD, print button and small printout hole.
After inserting chopsticks one by one machine calculate time between dropping 1st and 2nd stick and choose fortune cookie message for LCD. After chopsticks are inserted message appear on LCD: “Thank you for taking care for our mother Earth” Your fortune for today: Grand adventures await those who are willing to turn the corner For printout of this cookie as souvenir press PRINT.

In case of printout: Please consider your environmental responsibility before printing this souvenir. On the top of printout is a logo of the restaurant with basic info (as a motivation to owners for putting chopstick recycler in to the restaurant. fortune cookie saying time and GPS position.

A Drop of Dye

A drop of dye

tints water in a beaker’s glass,

the color spreads through

the density and mass.

Every drop of water

in the beaker now contains

the drop of dye

which no longer remains.

What a Minute Could Be

A minute is minute,

it flows out of time’s chute,

although time is not measurable

a minute is quite treasurable.

Beyond time and place,

a minute fills infinite space

with endless possibility

of what a minute could be.

The Body Clocks

Does time not exist

or its point of entry shift?

Portals of time

exist in the mind,

inside the brain

does time remain?

If you are seeking tic-toc

into the mind then knock,

into the body clocks,

into the body systems

does time exist in them?

Everything interlocks,

machinery run on relative clocks,

a speed it cannot go slower or excel

or the system becomes unwell,

too many things unwell,

the machine goes to hell.

Tic-toc the body clocks,

time remains here locked.

Holiday-themed fortune cookies are a unique and powerful way to create memorable gifts, promotions and events during the holiday season. This year, gourmet fortune cookie innovator Fancy Fortune Cookies has added the distinctly holiday confection of peppermint bark to its custom line of chocolate-covered fortune cookies—offered both in traditional and gigantic sizes, or on a green peppermint patty, red cinnamon, or traditional vanilla-flavored giant cookie base.

Fancy Fortune Cookies-Spreading Sweet Holiday Cheer

Indianapolis, IN – December 16, 2009 (PressReleasePivot) – Looking for a holiday gift that combines tradition with a dash of festive fun? New for the 2009 holiday gift season, FancyFortuneCookie.com’s peppermint bark and chocolate-covered fortune cookies will do just that, whether you opt for a peppermint, cinnamon, or traditional vanilla-flavored fortune cookie base.

Mike Fry, founder of America’s original gourmet flavored fortune cookie company, Fancy Fortune Cookies, wanted to find a gourmet holiday idea that broke the mold. So at his factory in Indianapolis, he came up with this festive holiday peppermint bark and chocolate-covered treat that will win over any recipient, whether they receive the traditional-sized cookie or even a giant-sized version weighing in at 1 lb. each.

“Perhaps no other flavor evokes the spirit of the holiday season more than peppermint,” says Fry. “In this festive treat, the fortune cookie is topped with dark, white or milk chocolate and then topped with a snowfall of peppermint candy cane bits. Aromatically cool and delicious, the snap of rich chocolate and the crunch of peppermint candy will put anyone in a festive holiday mood.”

Fortune cookies have been an American tradition since the early 1900s. The original fortune cookie has a bland almond or vanilla flavor and has become an American icon through the last century. Traditionally, fortune cookies contain messages to predict your future, always in vague terms, or provide a bit of common-sense wisdom.

In 1988, Mike Fry invented the flavored, colored fortune cookie and since that time, his company Fancy Fortune Cookies has painstakingly experimented, tested, tweaked and perfected each flavor and color formulation to create the most delicious fortune cookies possible. This continual process has given them the insight necessary to formulate over 25 one-of-a-kind color and flavor combinations specifically created to match logos, corporate colors or event themes. Since that time, Fry’s Fancy Fortune Cookies have become a tool for marketers and specialty gift-givers who wish to create personalized messages and give colored and flavored fortune cookie combinations that stand out as unique.

“I guarantee gift-givers and marketers will surprise everyone and steal the show by sending smoothly decadent peppermint bark fortune cookies to wish them a Happy Holiday,” says Fry. “And for an extra dash of unique holiday cheer, in addition to our traditional-flavored fortune cookies, we’re offering our gigantic peppermint bark-covered fortune cookies in the color / flavor combinations of green peppermint patty and red cinnamon. This gigantic version also makes a great hostess gift or centerpiece—it’s truly a sight to behold!”

Priced at $1.10 each for traditional-sized peppermint bark, chocolate-covered cookies or $34.95 for a giant version, Fancy Fortune Cookie’s festive treats can be personalized with one’s own fortune cookie saying, quote or holiday promotion inside for a memorable personal or business gift.

“This holiday season needs a little extra cheer and gifts that spread good will and good fortune,” says Fry. “Our peppermint bark fortune cookies will add festive holiday spirit to any holiday party and are the perfect way to pass on all your holiday wishes to friends and family.”

Holiday-themed fortune cookies are a unique and powerful way to create memorable gifts, promotions a

Fancy Fortune Cookies-Spread the Holiday Cheer

So at his factory in Indianapolis, he came up with this festive holiday peppermint bark and chocolate-covered treat ( http://www.fancyfortunecookies.com/Peppermint_Chocolate_Covered_Fortune_Cookies_p/mntw2020.htm ) that will win over any recipient, whether they receive the traditional-sized cookie or even a giant-sized version weighing in at 1 lb.

“And for an extra dash of unique holiday cheer, in addition to our traditional-flavored fortune cookies, we’re offering our gigantic peppermint bark-covered fortune cookies in the color / flavor combinations of green peppermint patty ( http://www.fancyfortunecookies.com/Peppermint_Patty_Gigantic_Fortune_Cookie_p/gppmntpty.htm ) and red cinnamon ( http://www.fancyfortunecookies.com/Flavored_Gigantic_Fortune_Cookie_Cinnamint_p/gcinnamnt.htm ).

My family and I are great believers in the ritual of savoring after-dinner fortune cookies whenever

My family and I are great believers in the ritual of savoring after-dinner fortune cookies whenever presented. Usually this follows an evening of dining out at a delicious Chinese restaurant. Getting all of us together for a dinner out? Fortunate and priceless! My not having to cook? Always most fortunate (for everyone involved)!

The ritual, which we have developed and followed religiously over the past ten years, goes like this: once the fortune cookies are presented, Mom (me) re-presents the bill to Dad and then mixes the fortunes up on the bill tray while he fumbles for the credit card. Then the youngest draws her lot. The reason the youngest always goes first is that by being the youngest, she has the supposed longest future ahead of her and thus the most reason to want to see what her long future will entail. She must read her fortune aloud and memorize as best she can the lucky numbers on the back of the cookie and repeat them back before the next youngest takes her turn, and so on until the ritual proceeds to its natural conclusion – with Dad, the oldest and the last to draw, getting the leftover fortune, never of his own choosing. His fate alone is left in the hands of what the rest of us don’t choose.

I impose this ritual when I’m dining with friends too. Today I had lunch with a wonderful friend. We went to a fabulous sushi restaurant and when the check was presented, along with the fortune cookies, I allowed her (the younger by three months) to choose first. She got one of the “fortunate” fortune cookies – in the next few days she will be getting an unusual gift. And it’s Christmas! What are the odds? Most precipitous! When it was my turn to open my cookie – which I never eat, by the way, because I just don’t like the taste – I cracked it open with great antici….pation (Rocky Horror joke here), only to find . . . NOTHING inside!

Was there someone somewhere seeing me one day opening this fortune cookie after a delicious lunch and envisioning a future too awful to put into words? Would I get hit by a car in the parking lot leaving the restaurant (I have an issue with parking lots this week – read yesterday’s blog)? Would I wake up only to find that I am not really awake – that there is no tomorrow? Is 2012 coming early for me?

Then my friend, oh, wise, wise, friend, said, “Maybe your possibilities are so great they can’t be put on paper. They are endless.” I like that, and as I didn’t get hit by a car in the parking lot, AND I bested my high score on Snood when I got home, I’ll take it. Thank you, Confucius Wendy!
