Pitti Uomo Florence Report

denisonboston Managing Director Jonathan Boston travelled to menswear trade show Pitti Uomo in Florence for the start of the Spring Summer season earlier this month.
Pitti is always a great start to the season and year, Florence is such a  beautiful,  historic and inspiring city. There was plenty of chatter and predictions about the season ahead. The whole place was buzzing with business conducted with the aid of good expresso, Peroni and the finest pasta!

The tradeshow is a true mix of premium formal and casual wear.  The formalwear looks as sharp as ever; the Italian and English brands styling out against each other. Boss Selection gets my vote for the best in show – or just the ability to take over an entire classical ancient building and turn into a brand mecca, showroom, gentleman’s club and all round halcyon for 4 days. Very Nice work.

Trends wise – Double breasted suiting, muted creams, browns and greys with strong ruby, purple accessories.  As well as blazers in sharp navy tones with orange accent colour and accessories.

On the casual front, had to give respect to Brooks England – heritage fashion cycling wear and accessories. One of the busiest stand on the show, even on the last day. Lots of excited looking Japanese and bearded Englishmen.

Had a quick bit of time for window shopping in Florence too – the locals really know how to dress a window. La Rinascente is always the best for creating a fashion world in a window.

Pitti Uomo sets the trends for the season ahead, I’m looking forward to doing it all over again in June, something tells me a Peroni will taste sweeter in the Summer!

 “Capture” – the next solo show by Matt Lambert

Lambert’s work is predominantly driven by his own experiences. At 23 and using his spare time he set up a charity Passing It On that has since built three educational facilities inAfrica.  This experience has had a huge influence on his work.

“The privilege of witnessing first hand both the day to day concerns of the third world and western cultures are one that I never take for granted. Excess and greed is present in both extremes but so is hope and kindness. Morality aside, the cultural disparities are huge and this is what drives my ideas. My work is not a charity campaign, it’s far too self indulgent to be that. It is much more a curious exploration into where we find fulfillment and the meeting of different value systems.”

Lambert works in oils on a variety of surfaces including canvas, board and even magazine cover. Sweeping loose marks combine with areas of fine detail, resulting in surfaces that are as rich and varied as his subject matter. His influences include African cultures, celebrity magazines, childhood memories, cinema, cultural symbols, urban landscapes, logos, superheroes and Star Wars.

House of Maffia’s Selina and Lina joined forces with Julie-Ann Murray of House of Murray this London Fashion Week season. Lina started the afternoon by attending the Falguni & Shane Peacock show at ON|OFF. Selina joined the crew over at the Jasper Garvida show at Vauxhall Fashion Scout where we had the privilege of jumping the queue and sitting on the second row. We rounded off the evening by traveling east to the Christopher Beales presentation and partied the night away in VIP at the Falguni & Shane Peacock after-party …

Effortless draping and peep hole ‘key’ prints gave us an insight into Jaspers more relaxed mood this season with a collection of refreshingly calm, oriental inspired minimalism. Armour-like embellished gowns and accessories gave an edge to the unusually light story which was much less extravagant than previous seasons.

To anyone who knows him, Christopher is a delightful, talented designer and costumier who’s combined passion, skill and love of his art will no doubt propel him to the very top of his art!

Hidden away in the delectable 123 Bethnal Green Road, that features the exquisite Fashion Eco Store and the Bunker Cafe- this was a real haven of creativity and a hub of excitement. The special book, the extra special launch all held in the delectable Bunker Cafe was filled to the brim with some of the most creative and talented people I have ever set eyes on. There was a continuous air of creative energy floating around in this talent hideaway. It’s so inspirational to share even the same air as some of these girls, and the illustrators to me are superstars. Heading to the Bunker Cafe for afternoon tea, there was the fair-trade tea specialists Pukka Herbs who kept us fully refreshed in the dinkiest, kitschest tea cups, the most amazing sweet-filled spread by Lily Vanilli cake company - which, I have to say had the most gorgeous selection of teeny tiny scones, mouth wateringly amazing brownies and the centre piece cake sculpture, which truly took my breathe away – could you eat it?!! short of shoving my head in it, it looked way to good to eat!

 Dr. Hauschka was on hand, literally, to give mini-hand treatments to relax away any stress. If you think we were spoiled by that little lot, the most amazing thing about the launch was to actually meet the superstars of the book – and yes they are absolutely amazingly talented – Amelia and the illustrators. I had chatted to a few of the gorgeous girlies before, but to finally meet them was amazing – I was so in awe of every single one of them. I managed to get the chance to be illustrated, there and then, by the stunning Joana Faria and Abby Wright – two girls who literally blew me away with managing to make my ugly mug look, well, amazing!

I got to meet Andrea Peterson who was the ACOFI books cover star who was busy creating masterpieces before our very eyes, and who not only was working like a trouper, had only gone and travelled from Arizona – amazing right?!?

But lastly, but most definitely not least, there was Dee Andrews – who is a girly who I just adore and has done lots of work for Scribbles before – but I finally got to met this little lady, and yep, you’ve got it, she’s ruddy brilliant! Getting to be so close to these people was an amazing feeling and even made someone like me, who lacks any kind of drawing skill, want to pick up some pencils and draw like the wind.

After the rather tea session, it was onto the more raucous evening event – where some more of my favourites came out to play: filled with Adnams Light Beer and Vodka 0 Australian Vodka, you an guarantee that the evening was going to be oh so much fun! All I can say is WOW to 6 Day Riot and The Pipettes, YUM to the drink choices, WOOHOO To ForwardPR (and their dancing) and THANKYOU to Amelia and everyone for making me feel as talented and creative as the rest of them.

I must also give a huge thank you to my twitter girlies who I finally got to meet, got to giggle with and share such a great experience with, to you girls: Nikki, Faye and Koral - who not only do they all look amazing, all talented but they all have the most special blogs ever!

It was a dream to go to an event like this, and I feel very privilidged! I hope to be as talented as these people one day!

I’m pretty sure many of you have heard of this designer before, I’m a relative newbie, but can say that my dress-roving eye has well and truly been turned. Rebecca Cella, is a yarn-star. Her take on knitwear is based around a collection of body-con, skin bearing, decadent mini dresses and full length gowns – all are absolute works of art. Sourcing unusual, beautiful and one-of-a-kind pieces of yarn from a multitude of places such as Morocco, India and America, Rebecca plays around with lurex, silk and ribbon to create truly remarkable, creative pieces. Not only are all Cella’s items handmade, but there is a real intricate process when coming up with all her creations. Using many different knitting techniques, Rebecca creates her very own yarn by shredding different fabrics and weaving them all together, once together, each and every row is painstakingly manipulated to create a one-off fabric which can then by hand dyed – something you wont see your nan do huh!??

Rebecca’s current collection makes me want to party… granted, some of the styles will not be for everyone and every frame, but I want one… I really do. These dresses are made for a female to good in, the look to make you feel a million dollars and are just so sumptuous and so glamorous to look at. Enough of my warble, feast your eyes and dancing shoes on these:

Think you’ll agree that these collections are pretty darn remarkable considering its all knitwear – It’s designers like Rebecca Cella who deserve the recognition for trying something different.

When a designer manages to bring both these elements together, is when people need to sit up and take notice. Christopher Beales has done just that, his precise, exact tailoring offers us women, certain assured elegance and style but also gives us his art-form in his experience as a costumier. Beales work is something of a work of art, the pieces are inspired from couture houses whilst mixing in new, inventive main stream fashion. Forward PR have divulged the name of the eagerly anticipated new collection from Christopher Beales, the title alone: When The Crystal Crack’d', strikes all manner of thoughts into my head: I’m thinking clean,clear palettes of colour, heavily embellished, well structured, cutout dresses that play on form-fitting to a women’s figure, with exaggerated shoulder details.. Ooo one can dream!

The new collection isn’t being unveiled until London Fashion Week in February, so I’m going to have to wait and see what this master of form has come up with. Here’s a little snippet of some past amazing creations and works of art, Beales has created and please, do go and check out his website. I truly cannot wait to see this creation, and will continue to dream about bringing some added drama into my life.
