The Dynamic Language Runtime (DLR) allows us to add dynamic behavior to .NET classes. Writing your o

The Dynamic Language Runtime (DLR) allows us to add dynamic behavior to .NET classes. Writing your own dynamic class, i.e. a class implementing IDynamicMetaObjectProvider interface, might be as easy as inheriting from System.Dynamic.DynamicObject. Or you might need more control over the dynamic operations and implement the IDynamicMetaObjectProvider interface manually. Or maybe you already have an existing class and need to add dynamic behavior while preserving its parent class. And perhaps you already have a class that implements IDynamicMetaObjectProvider, find this implementation useful and want to reuse it. What code do we need to write to achieve that?

The ForwardingMetaObject class defined below makes it easy to forward dynamic operations from one dynamic class (forwarder) to another (forwardee).

public sealed class ForwardingMetaObject : DynamicMetaObject {
    private readonly DynamicMetaObject _metaForwardee;

    public ForwardingMetaObject(Expression expression, BindingRestrictions restrictions, object forwarder,
        IDynamicMetaObjectProvider forwardee, Func<Expression, Expression> forwardeeGetter)
        : base(expression, restrictions, forwarder) {

        // We'll use forwardee's meta-object to bind dynamic operations.
        _metaForwardee = forwardee.GetMetaObject(
            forwardeeGetter(
                Expression.Convert(expression, forwarder.GetType())   // [1]
            )
        );
    }

    // Restricts the target object's type to TForwarder.
    // The meta-object we are forwarding to assumes that it gets an instance of TForwarder (see [1]).
    // We need to ensure that the assumption holds.
    private DynamicMetaObject AddRestrictions(DynamicMetaObject result) {
        return new DynamicMetaObject(
           result.Expression,
           BindingRestrictions.GetTypeRestriction(Expression, Value.GetType()).Merge(result.Restrictions),
           _metaForwardee.Value
       );
    }

    // Forward all dynamic operations or some of them as needed //

    public override DynamicMetaObject BindGetMember(GetMemberBinder binder) {
        return AddRestrictions(_metaForwardee.BindGetMember(binder));
    }

    public override DynamicMetaObject BindInvokeMember(InvokeMemberBinder binder, DynamicMetaObject[] args) {
        return AddRestrictions(_metaForwardee.BindInvokeMember(binder, args));
    }

    public override DynamicMetaObject BindConvert(ConvertBinder binder) {
        return AddRestrictions(_metaForwardee.BindConvert(binder));
    }

    // ... //
}

Let’s use this class in an example. Let’s define some class B simply as a subclass of DynamicObject that supports GetMember, InvokeMember and Convert to String dynamic operations:

public class B : DynamicObject {
    private readonly string _name;

    public B(string name) {
        _name = name;
    }

    public override bool TryGetMember(GetMemberBinder binder, out object result) {
        result = "got member " + _name + "." + binder.Name;
        return true;
    }

    public override bool TryInvokeMember(InvokeMemberBinder binder, object[] args, out object result) {
        result = "invoked member " + _name + "." + binder.Name;
        return true;
    }

    public override bool TryConvert(ConvertBinder binder, out object result) {
        if (binder.Type == typeof(string)) {
            result = _name;
            return true;
        } else {
            result = null;
            return false;
        }
    }
}

And now let’s define a class A that forwards these operations to B via ForwardingMetaObject:

public class A : IDynamicMetaObjectProvider {
    private readonly B _b;
    public B B { get { return _b; } }

    public A(B b) {
        _b = b;
    }

    DynamicMetaObject IDynamicMetaObjectProvider.GetMetaObject(Expression parameter) {
        return new ForwardingMetaObject(parameter, BindingRestrictions.Empty, this, _b,
            // B's meta-object needs to know where to find the instance of B it is operating on.
            // Assuming that an instance of A is passed to the 'parameter' expression
            // we get the corresponding instance of B by reading the "B" property.
            exprA => Expression.Property(exprA, "B")
        );
    }
}

Finally, let’s run some C# 4.0 code that shows how it all works together:

class Program {
    static void Main(string[] args) {
        B b1 = new B("b1");
        B b2 = new B("b2");

        dynamic a1 = new A(b1);
        dynamic a2 = new A(b2);

        Console.WriteLine(a1.SomeMember);
        Console.WriteLine(a2.SomeMember);
        Console.WriteLine(a1.SomeMethodCall());
        Console.WriteLine(a1.OtherMethodCall());
        Console.WriteLine((string)a1);
    }
}

Output:

got member b1.SomeMember
got member b2.SomeMember
invoked member b1.SomeMethodCall
invoked member b1.OtherMethodCall
b1

The really great thing about DLR is that your dynamic objects will also work in IronRuby and IronPython even though you haven’t thought about it at all when authoring them. Assuming that we compiled the above code into MyDynamicLibrary.dll we can run IronRuby REPL and check it out:

I don’t know about you, but I am fed up with email hoaxes and people forwarding them without doing a little fact-checking. Sure, I do it all the time on Twitter (posting or RT’ing without checking it out for myself), but never with an email. It may be because I only email people I really know and don’t really care that much about my tweets, and besides, on Twitter, there is an impetus to stay current, like you know, real-time. What prompted this post is the following email I’ve just received (copied and pasted, unedited):

The Plan!
?
Robin Williams, wearing a shirt that says ‘ I love New York ‘ in Arabic.

You gotta love Robin Williams ……..Even if he ‘ s nuts! Leave it to Robin Williams to come up with the perfect plan. What we need now is for our UN Ambassador to stand up and repeat this message.
Robin Williams ‘ plan…(Hard to argue with this logic!)

‘ I see a lot of people yelling for peace but I have not heard of a plan for peace. So, here ‘ s one plan. ‘

1) ‘ The US /UK/ AUSTRALIA will apologize to the world for our ‘ interference ‘ in their affairs, past & present. You know, Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Tojo, Noriega, Milosevic, Hussein, and the rest of those ‘ good ‘ ole ‘ boys ‘ , we will never ‘ interfere ‘ again.

2) We will withdraw our troops from all over the world, starting with Germany , South Korea , the Middle East , and the Philippines . They don ‘ t want us there. We would station troops at our borders. No one allowed sneaking through holes in the fence.

3) All illegal aliens have 90 days to get their affairs together and leave We ‘ ll give them a free trip home. After 90 days the remainder will be gathered up and deported immediately, regardless of whom or where they are from. They ‘ re illegal!!! France will welcome them..
4) All future visitors will be thoroughly checked and limited to 90 days unless given a special permit!!!! No one from a terrorist nation will be allowed in. If you don ‘ t like it there, change it yourself and don ‘ t hide here. Asylum would never be available to anyone. We don ‘ t need any more cab drivers or 7-11 cashiers..

5) No foreign ‘ students ‘ over age 21. The older ones are the bombers. If they don ‘ t attend classes, they get a ‘ D ‘ and it ‘ s back home baby.
6) The US /UK/ Australia will make a strong effort to become self-sufficient energy wise. This will include developing nonpolluting sources of energy but will require a temporary drilling of oil in the Alaskan wilderness. The caribou will have to cope for a while

7) Offer Saudi Arabia and other oil producing countries $10 a barrel for their oil. If they don ‘ t like it, we go someplace else. They can go somewhere else to sell their production. (About a week of the wells filling up the storage sites would be enough.)

  If there is a famine or other natural catastrophe in the world, we will not ‘ interfere. ‘ They can pray to Allah or whomever, for seeds, rain, cement or whatever they need. Besides most of what we give them is stolen or given to the army. The people who need it most get very little, if anything.

9) Ship the UN Headquarters to an isolated island someplace. We don ‘ t need the spies and fair weather friends here. Besides, the building would make a good homeless shelter or lockup for illegal aliens.

10) All Americans must go to charm and beauty school. That way, no one can call us ‘ Ugly Americans ‘ any longer. The Language we speak is ENGLISH..learn it…or LEAVE…Now, isn ‘ t that a winner of a plan?

‘ The Statue of Liberty is no longer saying ‘ Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses. ‘ She ‘ s got a baseball bat and she ‘ s yelling, ‘ you want a piece of me? ‘

If you agree with the above, forward it to friends…If not, and I would be amazed if you DELETED it!!“

Now, all it takes to verify this (or most forwarded email, for that matter) is to go to snopes.com and/or factcheck.org, two reputable sites where you can, if you fancy, you truth-seeker, verify the, well, veracity of most tales going around the interwebz. Go check this one out for yourself– http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/williams.asp Sure, sounds like a logical plan, and some parts of it make sense (okay, maybe the part where they strung some letters together to make words make sense–it is mostly haughty and high-handed, like a sober Rush Limbaugh on a bright sunny day picnicking at the park, perhaps), but don’t use Robin Williams’ name to make a statement. All I ask of you is to check it out. You’re already online anyway.

On his Harvard Business Blog, Tom Davenport recently wrote a post about how “Forwarding is the New Networking”. This is a great observation and should be a core weekly activity of anyone in business development including business or non-profit fund raising of any kind. It gives you not only relevant (as opposed to awkward) reason to touch others so they keep you in mind, but also helps reinforce your reputation as someone who is thoughtful and considerate of others – so long as you are truly sincere about it, which will pay benefits in areas you can’t even imagine down the line.

I first learned this skill from my dad who would tear out articles in newspapers such as the Wall Street Journal or magazines like Fortune or Forbes, add a short personal note, and mail them to business colleagues who he believed would be interested. Some were humorous and some strictly business, but they all were part of his core being – always thinking about how he could add value to someone.

Mailing a tear-out of a magazine or newspaper article is still the best way to go as it adds a personal touch; in an increasingly impersonal and digital world, this will help you stand out. Second to that is to find the full article, paste it in an email (along with the link) and forward it on with a personal note to those who might be interested. Don’t forward it to a bunch of folks at once. You don’t want to be on mass emails so don’t do it to others. Do it individually, or in logical groups, to keep it personal. Try it and be patient. People will be thankful to you for sending something that adds value to their day.

Despite being with them for over a decade, I’m having a lot of trouble with my domain and email host (123-reg.co.uk) at the minute. It seems they’ve recently made some internal changes to the way their email works and it’s buggered an awful lot of things up.
The problems first came to my attention when I sold an item on eBay and a day after the auction ended I received an email from the winning bidder asking if I’d received her previous email and paypal payment; I had received neither. Oddly, on investigation, I sent myself several emails to the domain I associate exclusively with my eBay and Paypal account – none of the emails arrived. This was the first sign that something was amiss: the domain should forward emails to my GMail account, but they definitely weren’t arriving there. An email to 123-reg support returned a clean-handed reply that forwarding emails outside of their domain was an error prone process which introduced any number of possible points of error. They suggested that my email had disappeared into a ‘black hole’ of Google’s making and there was absolutely nothing they could do about it. You might well imagine my response to that!
In an effort to work around the problem, I logged into my 123-reg admin panel with the intention of forwarding emails to the domain to a provider other than Google – only to find it was impossible to change the catch-all email forwarding address. I also noticed it was impossible to change the catch-all on any of my other domains. Another email to 123-reg’s support department followed. This time, the response was that the problem was due to ‘a glitch’. If I agreed, they would delete the catch-all’s on all of my domains, allowing me to enter new ones (which I would again be unable to change). Unfortunately, if they did this it would also delete any other forwards I had on those accounts meaning that unless I made a note of where they all went and then reconfigured them after supports intervention, many emails would be going somewhere other than their intended destination. So not really a satisfactory solution… As 123-reg are the administrators of their own database, I would like to think that it’s possible for them to simply change the catch-all without any other detrimental effect or (and here’s a crazy thought…) fix the ‘glitch’!!
While using the admin inteface, I also noticed that an (aggressive?) spam filter had been placed on all my domains: although there was a greyed-out ‘off’ option on this filter, it was well – greyed-out. Meaning I was unable to switch the filter off…
They also appear to have mislaid sixteen of the mailboxes I had against my primary domain. For those email addresses that weren’t forwarded to a competent mailhost, incoming mails were directed to a specified mailbox within 123-reg. I had seventeen mailboxes, but it appears that now, although their admin console confirms that I have 17, I only have access to one; and that’s empty.
A third email to support prompted a response suggesting I was mistaken; my response – including a screenshot of their interface, resulted in another response telling me they had escalated the issue to their ‘prod/dev’ department. Somehow that doesn’t reassure me at all…

As you might imagine, I’ve already made the decision to get the hell out of 123-reg.co.uk; my .co.uk’s can go to NetBenefit, and my .com’s to Melbourne IT. I’ll update this post as further developments arise; but in the meantime, if anyone has had any similar experiences recently, or has alternative suggestions as to where I could host my domains: I’m all ears…

update (26/08/2009): In their “wisdom”, 123-reg fixed the problem I was having with catch-alls by deleting all the catch-alls on all of my domains. Of course, since this included my main domain (armcurl.com), the email that was sent to notify me that this had happened never arrived. It also meant that any email addresses (99% of them) that were covered by catch-alls were now bouncing and I didn’t know about it. I realised something was wrong about 12 hours after the event, and I have no idea how many emails will have bounced in that time.

update (03/09/2009): In the last three days I have logged into various websites to be greeted with messages along the lines of “we are having trouble emailing you. Your email address of ‘xxx@armcurl.com’ is bouncing. Please confirm your email address. This has to be yet another side-effect of 123-reg’s recent email overhaul, I fail to see how they can blame Google forwarding etc. for this one, but we shall see.
123-reg support also appear to have developed a nasty habit of ‘resolving’ my support tickets without actually addressing the issues I raise. I can see no clear way of re-opening a ticket once they’ve resolved it, so have to open a new ticket each time. Absolutely, bloody useless.
