Modeling is a very large industry. Supermodels, or highly successful models, only represent a tiny fraction of models and modeling jobs although they do attract the most attention and publicity. Many women dream of becoming a successful top model but like other creative fields such as acting and singing, the competition for model places is fierce and disappointments are many.

Fortunately, the modeling world is vast and there are opportunities for everyone regardless of age, sex, weight, height, ethnicity or skill set. Modeling jobs cover a variety of fields including fashion, art, glamour, print, web, children, family and the list goes on. Most magazines, books, television commercials and other media related fields all require models based on their own particular needs. However becoming a model is not an easy task based on looks, and looks alone. To become a successful model will require a positive attitude, the ability to accept rejection, commitment, determination, hard work and a good working relationship with their model agency.

Beginners should have their photos up on a portfolio hosting site for models. These websites are generally free to join and upload photos and can get you a lot of exposure. I would recommend having memberships and profiles at ALL 3 of the following websites:

Miss Online
Model Mayhem
One Model Place

The first two (Miss Online and Model Mayhem) are totally free. The third is mostly free but you do get constant messages to upgrade to the “gold membership” (which I don’t think is worth the money).

Miss Online doesnt censor profile pages for content. You can add links to your other modeling profiles as well as your myspace page, etc. I’d use Miss Online as the profile link to send prospective agents because it saves alot of time typing in different websites. They go to the Miss Online profile and can link to your others. Simple.

In 1962, photographer Bert Stern shot a series of photos of Marilyn Monroe that have collectively come to be known as “The Last Sitting.” Taken during several boozy sessions at the Hotel Bel-Air, the photographs are arguably the most famous images ever captured of America’s most famous actress: Monroe, sleepy-eyed and naked, sips from a Champagne glass, enacts a fan dance of sorts with various diaphanous scarves, romps with erotic playfulness on a bed of white linens. Six weeks after she had posed, Monroe was found dead of an apparent barbiturate overdose.

The photos endure partly as artifacts—as the last visible evidence of the living woman (a legacy reinforced by Stern’s decision to publish the contact sheets Monroe herself had crossed out in red marker). But the pictures are also remarkable for the raw truths they seem to reveal. In them, we see an actress whose comedic talents were overshadowed by her sex appeal, a woman who is cannily aware of her pinup status, yet is also beginning to show her 36 years. In many shots, she is obviously drunk. This was an unhappy time for Monroe. Notorious for her on-set antics, she had been publicly lambasted by Billy Wilder after Some Like It Hot, then fired from the production of Something’s Got to Give; she’d endured two recent divorces and, in 1961, a brief stint in a psychiatric ward.

You’ve got to give the Sports Illustrated people points for being honest.

It’s February, you see. In many parts of the country, it’s bitter cold. The Super Bowl is over and baseball is yet to begin. We men don’t know what to do with ourselves.

Our minds unoccupied, we lack direction. We dwell randomly on negative things — our post-holiday flabbiness, old girlfriends who didn’t work out and, for some, girlfriends who did.

But one thing — the smile of a beautiful, scantily clad woman — can make us forget our woes. SI has been helping us forget since it published its first swimsuit issue 44 years ago.

But this year it hit the mother lode.

The cover features Marisa Miller, a 29-year-old stunner who cut her teeth modeling for Victoria’s Secret. As her curviness spills off the page, she gazes at us with angelic calm. She makes us feel like everything is going to be all right.

And maybe it is going to be all right.

Surely you know the origin of the swimsuit issue. The editors came up with the idea to boost magazine sales during the dead of winter.

It’s been driving feminists batty from the start. They say it exploits women, and it does. They say it is wrong for men to view women as mere objects, and it is. But what angers them most is that the cover models often go on to fame and fortune just because they are gorgeous.

Then they marry a multimillionaire, eventually divorce him, and live happily ever after on a considerable pile of dough.

The evolution of the swimsuit issue is also worth noting. The early issues were simple and mild. But in the late 1970s — thank you, Cheryl Tiegs — things really started heating up. The swimsuits got scantier and the models more beautiful.

That trend continued until the late 1990s, when something went terribly wrong. The 1998 issue, for instance, featured bony women with frowns on their faces. It had more feature stories than photos — such as interviews with beautiful female meteorologists who were covered up with more clothing than a winter mannequin at Macy’s.
