This past week, the Ohio Manufactured Home Commission held a hearing on revised changes to Ohio Rule

This past week, the Ohio Manufactured Home Commission held a hearing on revised changes to Ohio Rule 4781. This law is the one that dictates among other things how manufactured homes are installed in the State of Ohio. If you install any manufactured home in Ohio, whether you are moving the home from one place to another or purchasing it new, or whether it is being installed in a manufactured home park or on private property, this law is the one that the installers and inspectors must follow when installing it. Interestingly, most manufactured home owners are not even aware of it–until they move the home and try to have the power hooked up. That is when the power company is going to ask for proof of the required inspections.

The changes in the rule were initiated to align it with the federal Housing and Urban Development (HUD) model codes, which dictated the minimum requirements for all states’ laws. Ohio initially developed its rule before HUD finalized its model code, by more than a year. However, when HUD’s model code was passed into law, Ohio needed to align its rules with HUD’s, and that was the purpose of the hearing.

One particular part of the rule change had me concerned. It was the part where acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) pads were going to be allowed for all installations in place of a concrete footing required in the current rule. The foundations of many manufactured homes differs from stick-built homes in that the home is supported on a series of piers as opposed to a wall foundation. Typical manufactured homes have a pair of steel I-beams running the length of each section of the building. When set, these beams will sit atop the piers, which are spaced about eight to ten feet apart. Some manufactured homes do have foundation wall structural systems. But, even these homes have a series of piers under the home in places.

Piers supporting a manufactured home are usually constructed with some kind of footing and a stack of concrete and wood blocks. Until now, footings were a minimum of 6″ of concrete and usually were constructed in strips that either ran the length of the home or across the width of the home. These footings were also required to be at frost depth, which is 30″ in our area. Additionally, footings that are installed for concrete block perimeter walls for homes that have them are tied together with strip footings that run across the home’s width. Tieing all of the footings together makes for a very solid foundation base.

The proposed rule change would allow ABS pads to be used in place of concrete footings for ALL installations. So, what is an ABS pad. They are a square or oval ABS plastic pad, that is about 1/2″ thick. The dimensions of the pad that is used depends on how much weight the soil can bear. Whereas, with concrete footings, a trench needs to be excavated, forms possibly installed and the soil compacted, ABS pad only require the lot to be cleared of debris and vegetation, reasonably leveled, soil compacted if needed and then piers erected. Do these two installation even sound equivalent?

We at Criterium-Cincinnati Engineers did not think so. In fact, we know so based on inspections of over 500 manufactured home installations that are qualifying for FHA loans. These were homes with all kinds of foundation systems, on all kinds of soil types, in many different topographies and both single and double-wide structures. I was there to try to persuade the cognizant Commission to leave the rule the way it was with NO ABS pads allowed. Our conviction was that allowing ABS pads was not good for home owners who would not know otherwise.

Although I could not find any logical explanations for why the pads were being allowed, I have heard over and again the term affordable housing. But, is housing affordable if the structural system fails due to the foundation sinking into the soil? When this happens, the homeowner could either lose his or her investment in the home or incur large expense to fix the home. In our opinion, affordable housing should be sensible affordable housing.

Surprisingly, I was the only one to testify against the ABS pads. With the support of a couple of Commission members, who surprisingly are installers, the Commission voted to at least not allow pads to be used for all multiple section homes unless they are being temporarily set. ABS pads will still be allowed for single-wide homes, not matter whether they are installed in parks or on private property. We did not get a full victory; but I am happy with the result. Multi-section homes are those purchased for long-term housing where the homeowner expects the property to gain in value. Once set, these homes will likely not be moved, whereas single-wide homes often get moved.

And that is where the rule is at. I, once again solely, applauded the Commission after the vote for their good work.

By Robert Jones Sharon Pettijohn has a simple plan for teaching her Spanish I and Spanish II student

By Robert Jones

Sharon Pettijohn has a simple plan for teaching her Spanish I and Spanish II students to speak Spanish. “I ask them a question and they answer the question,” said Pettijohn, Stockton High School teacher of Spanish, Foundations of Success, and Sociology/Psychology.

“[Spanish I students] are working on Chapter Two, beginning to describe people and things, their likes and dislikes,” said Pettijohn.

Hannah Lindsey, freshman, said, “The new chapter is okay. I get it better than the last chapter.”

Freshman Sara Saunders also likes the new chapter. “It is easy,” she said.

The Spanish II classes have a little more in-depth topic. “[Spanish II] is finishing Chapter Seven about health and parts of the body like the mouth, arms, and legs,” said Pettijohn.

The Foundations class just finished a major test, according to Pettijohn. That’s also the topic of the next unit of study. “They are working on a section on test taking,” she said.

Reuse and ethnicity are the subjects of the new chapter of study in the Sociology class, Pettijohn said.

I was all set to volunteer at RUBARB’s Bike Rodeo for kids, but they had too many volunteers and not enough work to do. That’s a really, really good problem to have, it seems to me. I left, promising myself to come back on another Saturday when they might need another hand. I spent the afternoon on a ride with no destination. I dodged intermittent rain, riding into the wind for most of the day, so I was pedaling hard. For some reason I enjoyed that hard work immensely. I headed out Louisa just to see where it would go, and stopped to snap a picture of these concrete foundations. It was like a foundation graveyard out here at Louisa and Law, and it felt eerie. I can’t tell if this marks the end of something or the beginning of something else. I guess it’s probably both. I continued my ride through Gentilly, up Chef Menteur, in to Lakeview, with a brief stop at the PJ’s by UNO for coffee and a bagel. Then I rode along Bayou St. John, over on Canal past the bike polo tourney, and then up Baronne. In the daytime. It looks a lot different with all that light. I haven’t had a good aimless ride in awhile–damn job getting in the way–and I needed it. That’s just the sort of ride that puts me back in myself.

I’d like to briefly share with you two stories about two donors. The first is the Kern Family Founda

I’d like to briefly share with you two stories about two donors. The first is the Kern Family Foundation, which provides scholarships to 25 TEDS students every year. The Kern Foundation is committed to training pastors for full-time ministry, and Trinity is their largest partner. Last year they contributed $319,787 to fund the Kern Scholars. In October, representatives from Kern visited campus and met with administrators, faculty, and the Kern Scholars here on campus. We are thankful for their ongoing partnership and their generosity. To learn more about their foundation, visit www.kffdn.org.

The second story is about a family who sent four children to Trinity College in one decade. We received a letter from them along with their check, which was much smaller than the Kern’s contribution, but no less significant. They wrote, “The years when our kids were at Trinity were very difficult times for us financially, as we lost our farm and had little income. Yet the Lord provided…It was such a blessing to know that they were in the right place and that they were with the right people and learning the right things. Recently, we inherited some money and we are sharing some of the tithe of that inheritance with this great institution. May God be glorified.”

These are just two of countless stories of people who make Trinity a possibility.

Prayer Requests

Thank God for the Kern Foundation, and the vital role it plays at TEDS. Pray that they will partner with us for many years to come

Thank God for the many parents of current and former students, who support Trinity year after year

“O Lord, my heart is not proud, nor my eyes haughty; Nor do I involve myself in great matters

“O Lord, my heart is not proud, nor my eyes haughty;
Nor do I involve myself in great matters
Or in things too difficult for me.
Surely I have composed and quieted my soul….” -Ps. 131.1-2a

One of the greatest distractions for serious believers is to fall into a heady, brain-centered kind of Christianity. While senseless and ignorant faith is foreign to the Scriptures, the flip-side of spiritual silliness is a pursuit of detail and knowledge that distracts the believer from the “simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ.”

It is a stifling thing to allow your mind to run faster than your devotional spirit, for the human thought life will “take the treasure and run” if you allow it to. The psalmist equates the simplicity of trust in the Father with the leaning of a child upon the chest of its mother, and he calls Israel itself to the same kind of trust and sabbath rest in communion with the Lord.

Is your life marked by depression, anxiety, and confusion? It could be that you are involving your mind in matters “too difficult” for the present condition of your heart. It is one thing to search out great matters that the Lord places upon your heart. It is quite another to trust in your own wisdom and intellect in that pursuit.

It is the human tendency to turn to our own understanding, but the psalmist calls us to break down the altars of the mind, and all the swirling energies of speculation and presumption, and to trust in Him with an entire heart.

There will always be matters too great for us, no matter our maturity level, and it is crucial to recognize the season that the Lord has us in, and to learn to walk with Him through each valley, until He brings us to the next one. In the end, the issue of life is that of walking with the Lord, and it would be a great shame to stifle the life of communion with the God of creation by pursuing matters that He has not called us to be concerned with.

At this time of the year I always find myself in unbelief about how close we are to the end of anoth

At this time of the year I always find myself in unbelief about how close we are to the end of another year. So many things go through my mind at this time of the year . Things I did, did not do, people I met, things I learned, goals accomplished and the list goes on. At my age there are also a lot of things too that I have forgotten. I know I’m not alone in that . You just can’t remember what you forgot about this year. It’s Ok. What happens in the Citizen stays in the citizen.

As I reflected I concluded that with age, time and maturity comes more of an understanding of the need to focus on what people have in common as opposed to what our differences are. It is a shame that so many people live their lives focused on their differences not realizing that the things that they believe ,that are alike, are things that actually need to be celebrated! I guess a lot of the problem is that most people do not take time to determine what we agree about because it is so easy to focus on what we disagree about. To determine what we may have in common takes a bit more work than prejudging, rejecting, ostracizing, and just flat out avoiding one another. Those things are easy to do and don’t take a lot of energy , just shallow thinking.

I often talk about impacting and changing the world for the better because I believe we all have been given that assignment by God. I also believe that one hinderence to that is our unwillingness to move beyond F.E.A.R ( False Evidence Appearing Real). We look at something or someone, we listen to an opinion that is different, we hear an accent that is not like ours. We see a style of dressing, hear a particular form of music, or encounter a relationship that makes us uncomfortable and immediately False Evidence dictates our attitude toward that thing.

I am not my hair, I am not my car, my house, the music I listen to! I am not my skin color, academic status or my piercings! What most people are we do not know because we fear to often what might be different from ourselves.

Many of us are so afraid of anything different therefore, we refuse to investigate it because we have so ingrained into our thinking that our way is the only way even when we know that our way isn’t working anymore . Coaches do it, businesses do it, parents do it. One of the most segregated hours every Sunday morning is 11:00am because churches do it. Churches? Yes churches . They probably do it the best. I would think that churches should be leading the world in being accepting of differences but they too become afraid as if a church would lose who it is , to do something it has never done, to reach people that it has never reached. I am NOT saying compromise, but if pastors and their assembly’s are supposed to model Jesus then it should be “spiritually correct” to engage in love “whosoever”( that was one of Christs’ favorite words) wants what Christ desired. While we’re on religion here, if a Muslim wants to feed, cloth, or in other ways bless someone , just because our theological foundations are different it doesn’t mean that we can’t come together and make things better for someone. Okay, I got that out.

We must discover common ground with everyone . It’s a starting point . We must first be willing to approach one another, drop our guards and lose any exclusive group mentality. I believe that our differences can be our strengths when we realize that we can manifest phenomenal outcomes by the power that being in agreement , maybe not about all things, but about more things than we may care to admit, replaces the energy that we use to remain distant and in disagreement with people we won’t agree to embrace.

Seven designs for offshore wind turbine foundations are short-listed

18 November 2009

Seven new designs for offshore wind turbine foundations have been short-listed for funding by the Carbon Trust in Britain.

The offshore wind turbine foundation designs are aimed at reducing the high costs associated with installing offshore wind turbines, where deepwater foundations comprise at least 20% of total project costs, says the Carbon Trust. Offshore wind currently costs £3 million a megawatt as many of the sites which are being tendered for development are farther from shore in deep water and in treacherous conditions.

More than 100 engineering companies from around the world submitted ideas on how to cost-effectively build offshore wind turbines in severe weather conditions as far as 100 miles out to sea and in waters up to 60 m deep. Each design was assessed by an expert panel of judges including Carbon Trust partners Airtricity Developments, DONG Energy, RWE Innogy (owner of Npower Renewables), Scottish Power Renewables and Statoil.

The entries were selected based on manufacturing costs, transport and installation costs, potential for volume cost savings, structural design and durability, maintainability and turbine accessibility, and decommissioning and removal costs.

Each of the 7 offshore wind turbine foundation designs will receive £100,000 support for concept development, engineering analysis, commercial feasibility and technical assistance. A final three winners will have their designs built and installed in large-scale demonstration projects in 2010-2012 with funding from a consortium led by the Carbon Trust.

“Building thousands of turbines offshore to provide a quarter of our power needs is the greatest engineering challenge we face in the coming decade,” says Tom Delay, Chief Executive of the Carbon Trust. “Without new thinking to cut costs many planned projects could remain on the drawing board putting our carbon targets and energy security at risk. We must urgently re-engineer our energy system and building offshore wind farms while creating onshore jobs must play a central role.”

Latest figures from the British Wind Energy Association (BWEA) show that UK wind energy has reached 4000 MW of installed capacity, of which 600 MW is offshore. The 7 offshore wind turbine foundation designs have the potential to revolutionise the construction of offshore wind farms, reducing costs and overcoming engineering challenges, with some of the radical concepts including floating turbines anchored to the sea bed and spider-like tripod structures.

“Offshore wind energy generation is starting to mature and, as the landowner of the seabed, The Crown Estate welcomes this competition and hopes that these new designs reduce capital and investment costs required to deliver offshore wind as an alternative, secure energy supply,” says Rob Hastings of The Crown Estate. “This is another step towards the successful delivery of 40 GW by 2020 that industry has put on the table.”

The offshore wind industry is vital to meet the 2020 renewable energy target and has the potential to generate £65 billion of net economic value and 220,000 jobs for the UK by 2050.

Britain wants to install 6000 offshore wind turbines to allow offshore wind to meet one quarter of the country’s electricity needs by 2020. The current price tag is £75 billion, with deep water foundations accounting for 20% of total project costs. The goal of the new designs is to reduce current costs of foundations by at least one quarter, which will save billions of pounds and enable the industry to deploy turbines in deeper and rougher sea conditions that will be experienced by the significantly larger offshore wind projects beginning in 2012 as part of the Crown Estate’s third round of licensing.

While the UK needs 6000 new offshore foundations by 2020, the global number of offshore wind turbines will reach 15,000, a global market for offshore wind turbine foundations worth £2.5bn a year, which shows clear market potential for the winning designs.

“If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” -Lk. 11.13

The Lord Jesus promised to send the Comforter to His disciples, stating that it would be better for us if He went than if He would have stayed. Surely the first disciples found this statement difficult to fathom, but on the day of Pentecost, when fire from heaven came down upon them all in the upper room, it became evident why Jesus had said such a thing.

Nowadays there are whole denominations who have no anticipation of the visitation of God by the Spirit, and there are others who equate noise and hype with spiritual movement. On the day of Pentecost, there was a great noise from heaven, and it was heaven’s response to the faith, hunger and anticipation of the disciples who were waiting upon Him, having believed His promise.

We need daily to be reminded that the promise is to us just as much as it was to the believers of old. Hear this from Wesley Duewel:

You need not remain satisfied with an occasional awareness of God’s Spirit in your life. You can be filled with Him daily, moment by moment. He places the longing for more of His Spirit in your heart because He desires to satisfy you, to amaze you by His abundant answer.

…. God wants you to have such an abundance of the water of the Spirit that you are more than satisfied. The Spirit’s water will spring up within you like a fountain fed by an artesian well (Jn. 4.14). When you are thus filled with the Spirit, it will be impossible to hide the fact, and thirsty people around you will come and be blessed through your life.

(Wesley Duewel, More God More Power; Zondervan, pp. 15-16)

The promise is not some doctrinal opinion reserved for those in Pentecostal denominations. It is not an optional idea for those believers who are interested. It is not some cheap and unfounded emotional display in a large meeting. The promise is that the Living Waters of God will come rushing into your life with all the force of God Himself, if you are hungry, child-like, and trusting enough to ask it of the Father. He will impart His own power, love, and nature to the saint who hungers and thirsts after His Spirit. He will make all things new and give you His own character and heart.

His desire to give you His Spirit is greater than a father’s desire to give good gifts to his children. Turn to Him today, then, dear saint. The Lamb of God was slain to open the floodgates of grace over your life, and He will pour out His Spirit upon all who are thirsty.

Now more than ever, individuals, corporations, and foundations want to make informed choices when they make financial contributions to nonprofit organizations. And people want to volunteer where their time and talents will be put to good use. So how do you know which organizations to support?

A valuable print resource since 2003, the Catalog for Philanthropy: Greater Washington went online tonight. “We offer a wide variety of giving options, including a gift registry and gift cards,” according to Kathy Harman, President and Editor, CFP-DC, and Executive Director, Harman Family Foundation.

Beyond making financial contributions, individuals can have the highest impact in helping to move nonprofits to higher levels of performance by joining the board of directors. And having trained and “matched” hundreds of business executives in finding the right boards of directors to serve on, I strongly advise

One that I really wish to never have to experience for a good duration of time. My initial reaction was to find Round objects on the line and document/collect/and create a structure based on these findings. This was too easy, simple…literal..boring…and many more adjectives that I really couldn’t elaborate. I was sick of this project…I wanted a better word, a more creative and abstract idea would possibly redeem my outlook on the capacity of projects I could strive to construct. My brain storm was similar to this…

THE REVELATION PAINTING-A MYSTERY REVEALED

This is a true revelation about The Revelation Painting. Throughout history it has been missed and will change religion, as well as history as we know it to be regarding Revelation in the bible. After working on this painting for the past 11 years I realize exactly how something of this magnitude was missed. Upon crushing stones for the painting I began to see how the colors created something very familiar although it was not fully apparent at first. Initially I saw the stones of the twelve foundations just as anyone else but then started to see a pattern. Intermittently within the pattern some stones seemed out of place. I began to research the origins of the stones, ancient known colors, their original names, ancient descriptions and then I realized what the stones meant. A story unfolded before my eyes!

The first stone of the twleve foundations is Jasper (please see the blog on Jasper and subsequent stones). I imagined a “New City” in the sky; the heavens and thought the correct stone was Ocean Jasper; a blue stone. I began requesting Ocean Jasper from all over the world. It was through a dream that I realized my mistake only 10 years later. A dream lead to the discovery and it was as though a tape recorder played the sentence: “His face shone like the sun, as a precious gemstone as clear as crystal; a Jasper stone.” Day and night the words taunted me. I researched Jasper; a quartz and realized that it was the clear, brilliance of quartz crystal which reflects small rainbows within it similar to a diamond effect! What better a stone to signify the pure cleanliness, shine and glory of God himself? A city which “shines like the sun”.

Sapphire followed but the common blue sapphire was not correct either. Upon researching the colors of Sapphire, I was in awe to realize that red Sapphire is a Ruby! I placed a Ruby for the second stone of the foundations and threw caution to the wind. It was a very expense risk and the first time I smashed a ruby into shards I thought I would pass out but interestingly enough, it was comfortable and extremely natural. Mingling ruby with the quartz began to create a fading effect, like dry pigments; the richer the mixing the darker the color, so a small amount caused a pink effect fading to a rich, translucent red-the hallmark of the brilliance only Ruby has. Little did I realize at that time the translucency also played a significant roll in the meaning of the New City and the twelve foundation stones.

The third stone, Chalcedony was also known for its sky blue, heavenly color. Now, against the red and clear it was obvious that the blue was incorrect. According to the pattern of color I was trying to achieve it was apparent the Chalcedony was minimally red-orange, if not solidly red. I researched Chalcedony and once again was surprised to find that red is a rare color of the stone. The red of Chalcedony is more opaque that the Ruby. When I looked at the red color it reminded me of blood; the red-orange color of blood and it was like the brilliance of God was bleeding, fading like a slow bleed. It was only destiny that the next stone-Emerald was red. I battled over my theory and knew that at one time Emerald had to have been a red stone. I started from the beginning.

Emerald is a Beryl. Beryl’s come in all colors, including red. After intermittently learning about stones, it was when the economic crisis in the United States prompted me to start collecting a “nest egg”, something that would always have value throughout time like gold, platinum, precious gemstones… I looked for the rarest gemstone in the world and found beyond my wildest imagination red Beryl, a red “Emerald” or Bixbite! I still faced the delimma of why the only Emerald I had ever known was green. I found that in the 1800s green Beryl was separated from the family and man called it Emerald! I had found the discrepancy amongst the stones and within the fade from translucency to opaque, the deepest red of Bixbite is the color of blood! My New City was bleeding!

What is the most powerful sacrifice made for humanity in the bible? Jesus shed his blood and died for our sins so that we will have everlasting life. Everlasting life in God’s New City! How appropriate for a New City-God’s New City, a new and pure beginning to shine in his image first and foremost. Secondly, to never let us forget the sacrifice which was made-Jesus’ blood and ultimately his life? The first six foundations show glory, a slow bleed, a vanishing bleed through Sardonyx and Sardius (Carnelian) turning red-orange to orange, and the seventh stone (a division stone from one message to another yet overlapping to connect the meanings of a promise), is Chrysolite-gold, like the streets of the New City shiny like glass.

The following colors after Chrysolite are the seven colors of the rainbow in their correct order. A rainbow signifies a “promise” as noted in the story of Noah’s Arch. Personally I would imagine that within the New City there would include a promise of purity, overall good and God’s plan. As I have stated before: I am not religious but I am learning to make my own decisions. If I were God I suppose I would have hidden astounding clues within my work which is what prompted the many mysteries within The Revelation Painting. It is an exciting time and Revelation is rising!

Revelation is about sevens and mysteries. There are seven colors in a rainbow. The seventh stone from top to bottom in the mentioned in the foundations is Chrysolite which signifies a division line within the foundation stones between two messages.

JASPER (QUARTZ)
Rev. 21:11 …“It shone with the glory of God, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like Jasper, clear as crystal.”

JASPER-QUARTZ “As clear as crystal”

SAPPHIRE (RUBY)
Every color of the stone Corundum is considered a ”Sapphire” except for red. The red Sapphire is a Ruby.
Translucent red fading from the clear…starting to bleed…

SAPPHIRE (RED) RUBY

CHALCEDONY
More opaque, a richer red-a rare color…heavier bleeding…

CHALCEDONY (RED-OPAQUE)

EMERALD
A Beryl. In the 1800’s, man removed the green Beryl from the Beryl group and called it an Emerald. Is this the Emerald mentioned in the foundations of the New City? It fits perfectly into the scheme of color and meaning.
RED Beryl-Bixbite, the rarest gemstone in the world!
The feedback about this stone is amazing, many people are attracted to it compared to other stones of the painting and ask constantly what kind of stone it is. Why would that be?Why does the stone fall in this position within the foundations? Does it symbolize the rarity of Jesus’ blood? Only 60 pounds of this rare stone was ever mined!
(This gem is typically heavily included, opaque, and the faceted Gem is very expensive. You could expect to pay $20,000 to $25,000 for a one (1) carat Red Beryl; RED EMERALD!)

EMERALD (RED) BIXBITE

SARDONYX
Blood (red blood cells and yellow plasma)
The blood is now fading from red to orange.

SARDONYX (Red Orange Transition)

SARDIUS
Carnelian-pure ORANGE transitional stone into the remaining rainbow. The second color of the rainbow.

SARDIUS-CARNELIAN

_________________________________________________

_________________________________________________
CHRYSOLITE-Beryl. Heliodor-golden, the streets of the New City are also gold like glass. This is the separation line between two messages.

CHRYSOLITE (Beryl-Golden)

CHRYSOPRASUS
Chrysoprase BLUE…rainbow blue (teal) reference the rainbow.

JACINTH
Hyacinth in ancient times and Hyacinth is Sapphire. Other literature states that Jacinth is what we know today as Zircon (not cubic zirconia that is synthetic).
Sapphire or mixed Zircon (red/blue) INDIGO

The New City built by GOD will shine in the image of God’s glory (as noted above-the “shine”) as Jesus’ blood flows to let us never forget the sacrifice he made. The blood separated by the golden division line from blood to the seven (remaining five) rainbow colors in their correct order, of a promise of God’s love.

RAINBOW-A promise!

THE REVELATION PAINTING
Please note the most of the stones mentioned have a spectrum of colors, which exhibit fading and transitional properties from one stone to another, therefore one color of the rainbow to the next, e.g. A Ruby may be represented in pink to red in various shades and a Topaz can range in the green-blues, among other colors. Amethyst can be seen in darkest purple to violet to an almost clear (among other colors), which could be considered blending with the clear Jasper and starting the process all over again.
