If I haven’t praised Joy Orbinson’s work enough so far, I will now cause his latest remix is coming directly from another planet! A rework on Four Tet’s Love Cry that’s taking the idea or contemporary electronic music warp speed into a next next next level. Absolutely into this one!

Quais os critérios que levam as pessoas, independente de formação e classe social, a discernir aquilo que elas imaginam que é música do que não é? Um hábito e, sobretudo, um amor pela melodia, pelo ritmo, pelo “groove”, pela confirmação daquilo que já se conhece, pela “competência”, pela sensibilidade para os problemas sociais, pelo barulho, pelo labor, pela complexidade, por formas e gêneros específicos… Variados são os critérios, mas um elemento os une sob a forma do preconceito: a idéia de que a música é uma instituição erigida em um tempo primordial, através da qual todos os “músicos” obtém legitimação. Desta forma, realmente, fica difícil se orientar e aproveitar o espectro de manifestações musicais de hoje em dia. Isto porque a prática criativa antecede o rótulo, mas as pessoas insistem no contrário. Dizer “isso não é música” implica em saber o que é, e aí os critérios excluirão de saída algo novo, na medida em que o novo não faz parte do passado (pelo menos não completamente). Dito isto, falemos da nova faixa de Kieran Hebden, “Love Cry”. Um amigo ouve a faixa e sentencia: “o techno vai acabar com a música!” Critério número um: trata-se de uma mera manipulação de loops, ressaltando somente a repetição e a orientação para a pista (critério formal); critério número dois: qualquer um pode fazer isso (critério de legitimação). Mas o que eu vejo é que, em primeiro lugar, não há mal nenhum em se criar ou adotar um procedimento aparentemente simples, que ocasione a popularização do processo: reclamar disso é reinvindicar labor e procedimento para a produção musical, o que me parece absurdo, pois o que importa é o resultado – e neste aspecto, Kieran Hebden é dos artistas mais importantes dos últimos anos. Também não vejo mal nenhum em se trabalhar com a repetição, pelo contrário, não se trata de uma qualidade ou de um gênero, mas um modo ou um atributo de algumas manifestações criativas que operam com sons. Que a música seja considerada por um grupo como isso ou aquilo, não vejo mal nenhum. Mas que a música universal seja petrificada numa forma particular, que intedita outras possibilidades, me parece um erro. Melhor abrir mão da marca “música” em favor do pensamento e da criação. Assim, acho no mínimo estranho afirmar que o techno terminará com a “música” a partir desta faixa criada por Kieran Hebden sob o pseudônimo Four Tet. Ora, mas se é justamente em suas inflexões percussivas (seu maravilhoso chocalhinho…), teclados e contrabaixos vigorosos que o gênero parece apontar uma luz no fim do túnel… Eu mesmo que já fui um detrator do EP Ringer, devo voltar atrás: é um disco tão minucioso no modo como sobrepõe as diversas camadas percussivas e timbrísticas que hoje me parece um estudo para “Love Cry” e para o álbum que virá. Se nos anteriores, Hebden trouxe à tona uma forma particular de reelaborar procedimentos jazzísticos através de um pesado aparato eletrônico, a história parece mudar de foco, o comprova tanto Ringer como a colaboração com Burial e este doze polegadas: a perspectiva agora é a de buscar novas tinturas para o techno, retiradas de pesquisas e experimentos com sonoridades mais abstratas. Se isto prejudicará ou melhorará a música como um todo, pouco importa. Mas eu não tenho a menor dúvida que a manterá viva e interessante. (Bernardo Oliveira)

I recently featured the heavenly 10. mins. original of Four Tet – “Love Cry”, and to get to grips on a remix of such beauty is no mean feat.

The hype surrounding the Joy Orbison remix of “Love Cry” has been stupendous, with the mix floating around on You Tube screening in the Blog’o’sphere, but here you have the real beast in full 320 calibre for you to witness what the fuss is about.

Joy Orbison delivers a shimmering, summery, breaks-fuelled diamond, which floats out of your speakers like freshly melted butter on a warm summer day.

It’s a top-notch 5. mins production you can’t boot, but since I’m a sucker for longer mixes, which soaks you into the embodiment of the core of the track my money is still firmly placed on the spellbinding original.

But – as Derrick May says – “It is what it is!”, and you make your own decisions which is the best.

His sound and melodies incorporate elements of hip hop, electronica, techno, jazz, and folk music with live instrumentation. i don’t believe in god.  sure, i think he is totally going to destroy us all in 2012 with the help of our arch-nemesis Mayan Calender, but i don’t so much  believe in “him”.  in fact, i don’t actually believe in anything, other than math and whatever i happen to be watching on television.   so with little or no “belief magic” you can imagine how stoked i am for thanksgiving.  yes, nothing gets me hyped on binge-eating quite like celebrating native americans teaching white people how not to starve in 1621… only to be almost entirely decimated by their dinner guests over the next 200 years.

but this year i’m going climbing (v14+/5.14c+).  then i’m going home (house).  then i’m listening to music (GOOD).  and it probably will sound like this:

people.  listen to me.  this might be the best beats album of all time.  seriously.  i don’t lie about this kind of stuff.  in fact, outside of taxes and my entire high school sexual history – i don’t lie about anything.  except that one time when i was on vacation.  yes, that really happened.  really.

given the infantile attention span of – well – most everyone, this is probably considered old (it came out a year ago – GASP!).  i forgot where i was going with this, but i just bought this Starkey album yesterday, which makes me both really excited and also, like, WAY behind.  at any rate, this song is awesome.  rowdy r&b flavored bass music.

in what appears to be a trend, here is yet another artist who is a decade younger than me who I am totally in like with.  this remix by Joy Orbison basically takes everything awesome in music and crunches up into something more awesome than all the parts.  in other words – 5/5 – ***** – 10/10 – 8A

and, finally, what’s the point of having a musically affiliated blog if you don’t include yourself?  especially if you – you know – make some of the musics?

this song is good.  i know because my mom listened to it and said i was “SOOOO SMART”.  so, like, eat it.

I haven’t mentioned Joe Goddard of Hot Chip’s solo project yet, have I? Well I don’t know much about it except that his album Harvest Festival is out featuring the first single “Apple Bobbing.” I haven’t heard anything from the album except this remix by Four Tet of the single.

Oh Baby – it’s cold outside!

Good thing you have Kieran Hebden and his Four Tet moniker to warm you by – then!

Four Tet have for years been producing the kind of spine tingling electronic soundscapes, which consistently have been pushing boundaries for what’s possible with machines, processors, circuits and a bit of power.

The forthcoming Four Tet album – “There Is Love In You” – is expected to land at your local music pusher on 25th. January 2010 (26th. if you live in the States), and holding 9 stellar tracks it marks the moment for the 7th. Four Tet album, and if you count Kieran’s work under his own name and mix albums, his 13th.

Needless to say – if you have 13 albums under belt you kind of know your way around a studio or two, and with his latest single – “Love Cry” – there is amble proof of such fact.

From its singular hum – “Love Cry” – soon develop into a 9′01″ mins. labyrinth of acoustic drum breaks and transcending space sounds coupled with a hypnotic vocal, which seems to be hovering around its own axis endlessly. In fact – there’s good reason to get more than dizzy listening to this if you’re looking at prolonging your weekend state.

Championed by the BBC Radio 1 massive this is definitely one of those leftfield wonderments!

Four Tet is coming out with a new album next year entitled “There is Love in You.” It’s going to be sick. Kieran has been slowly moving away from banging on xylophones and making novelty electronic music with the sounds of wings fluttering in the wind and Aphex Twin peeing on the toilet seat since 2008’s awesome “Ringer” EP. This is a really good thing. The remix 12” of his new single “Love Cry” features rejiggers by Joy Orbison and Ruska, which says a lot about his aural mindstate right now.

In case you didn’t catch it, I’m almost 92.5% sure the vocal sample on “Love Cry” is from Cassie’s “Me & U.” This is a really good thing.

More Four Tet related news, but this time Four Tet is more the byproduct and up and coming dubstep producer Joy Orbison is the main feature. London’s Peter O’Grady aka Joy Orbison has recently prepared an excellent remix of Four Tet’s new single “Love Cry” (which can be heard below) and continues to build the anticipation for his upcoming debut album on Hotflush Recordings (no major details on that yet). In other news, Four Tet and Joy Orbison will be playing a show together at The Dome in London on Feb. 12, 2010.

There has not been a whole lot of output from Joy Orbison to date; however, what he has released has already won over many critics and fans alike. Joy initially splashed into the spotlight with his exquisite dubstep track “Hyph Mngo” (see below) which was released along with another quality song “Wet Look”. He also has a few other tunes on his myspace but other than that, all we have to listen to are a few long mixes he’s done.

Fortunately, you can listen to/download the mixes freely below and if you look closely (tracklists for each below) you can see that he snuck a few more of his own songs onto the fine Doldums Mix including “Hyph Mngo”.

Joy Orbison is a name you are not going to want to forget (and aren’t likely too), so keep on the lookout for him in the future.

↓To be honest, I’ve never been a huge fan of Tiësto. Every time people go nuts for the guy, say he’s the number one DJ in the world and blah blah blah, I just quietly disagree. He really isn’t that great IMO, from all his albums to even his live shows. But his most recent release Kaleidoscope has taken a different turn in that he has a ridiculous amount of cameos…most of ‘em from the indie world. You guys probably remember the song with Tegan and Sara! Well, this one is killer. And I’m quiet impressed with the album. But he still remains pretty low on my DJ books.

While it’s been nearly five years since Kieran Hebden last released a full album under the name Four Tet, that isn’t to say he’s been sat at home twiddling his thumbs. In fact, Hebden has already released one of the year’s finest records, in his low key collaboration with Burial earlier this year, as well as last year’s technorific (I’m coining this word) Ringer EP, and 2007’s, The Sun, with Post Rock outfit Fridge. All in all, then, he’s been a busy boy, leaving his stamp on a variety of different electronic styles as he goes.

This looks set to continue with a brand new Four Tet album early next year, scheduled for release on 25th January and entitled There Is Love In You. The first single from the album, Love Cry, was released last week on limited 12″ and really is a pretty exciting listen. I love the sparse, more subtle direction that Four Tet appears to be heading in, and if the rest of the album is anything like Love Cry I will be more than happy. The nine minute track has a patient build up, yet it’s not a climax Hebden’s creating, but a groove, and by its end you should be firmly trapped within it.
