One reason Firefox is so awesome is that it is very customizable. A user can make it super simple or highly complex just by going to the Firefox Add-on site. As an avid Firefox user I try out lots of add-ons, but only two are mainstays on my system. One is functional and the other is a theme that I feel updates the Firefox experience and makes an already awesome app even better.

Xmarks is an essential add-on for anyone that uses several browsers. The concept is simple: You install the add-on, create an account, and then you can sync your bookmarks and/or passwords via the Internet to any browsers with the add-on also installed. The best part is that it has cross-browser support for not just Firefox but also IE, Safari and even Chrome. Further you can use it across different platforms so you can sync your Firefox bookmarks to Safari, IE, or Chrome, or any other combination for that matter. It also has some great search features as well. Xmarks will highlight the top three most bookmarked sites in your Google search and by simply clicking on the Xmarks icon in your url bar you can find out more information about whatever site you are visiting.

Chromifox Extreme Carbon is a great theme inspired by Google Chrome. Unlike Chrome though it has a nice industrial grey/silver color scheme similar to Safari. I like the simplicity of the Chrome inspired layout with the tabs above the menus along with the industrial design of Safari all while preserving the menus of Firefox. Chrome’s “Bug Zapper” blue color, overly simplistic menus, and lack of a separate search box annoys me. This theme take the best cues from three different browsers and marries them very nicely. Many people out there have “multiple bookmark collections on multiple locations”.
This can be annoying.

While working at home you store your favorite bookmarks about news, computer stuff, politics or whatever on your home computer. At work you have a different collection with bookmarks, which may contain just work dependent stuff. Maybe you added a new bookmark at work about an article with interesting content but you had no time to read it. Now you want to access your new bookmark from anywhere, at any time you want.

It’s rarely possible, not everybody has access to his data at work.

But why would I write an article,
when there is not a solution for that kind of problem

There is an interesting way out called “Xmarks”, formerly known as “Foxmarks”. You are able to use Xmarks on Windows, Linux or Mac OS with the well known web browsers like Firefox, Internet Explorer or Safari.

After installing Xmarks you need to create a user account, to store your data on Xmarks data store.

Now, some of you’ll say:
“Oh no, I don’t want to share my private data” or
“Hey this is a dumb idea. I don’t want to belong to the transparent society”.

No problem!
The solution is: Use your own data store.
With Xmarks you are able to use an own FTP or WebDav server to store your bookmarks. On the figure below (german version), you can see the available settings to set an own server.

Let’s take the router FritzBox 7170, which is able to share mass storage devices over the network. Here I would prefer to use a 4GB USB flash drive, enable the access from outside and don’t forget to set the credential-settings. To make the access easier, I would prefer to use dynamic dns e.g. dyndns.com.

Et voila, our problem is solved!
Now you can access and update your bookmarks from anywhere and anytime you want.

Xmarks es el primero de los complementos para Firefox de los que os voy a hablar, y no es el primero por casualidad. Después de un tiempo se ha convertido para mi en imprescindible Yo lo uso desde hace bastabte tiempo, y es posible que alguno lo conozcáis por su antiguo nombre: Foxmarks.

Xmarks

Xmarks es un sincronizador de marcadores, y opcionalmente, de contraseñas. Sirve para mantener los mismos favoritos en varios equipos (sobremesa, portátil, el del trabajo, etc.), además de permitirte recuperarlos después de haber formateado. Funciona en segundo plano, siendo casi transparente para el usuario. El equipo de Foxmarks mantiene copias remotas de nuestros favoritos pudiendo recuperarlos en cualquier momento.

También se le puede permitir que almacene todas las contraseñas que vamos usando en diferentes sitios web para que las introduzca automáticamente sucesivas veces. Todas las contraseñas quedarían protegidas por una contraseña maestra.

Una vez instalado este complemento, debemos registrarnos en Xmarks para crear una nueva cuenta en la que almacenar los marcadores y las contraseñas. Esta cuenta es la que permitirá sincronizar diferentes equipos en el futuro.

Se puede configurar (yo lo tengo así) para que se sincronice con el servidor cada vez que se finalice la ejecución de Firefox o para que pregunte que hacer cada vez que se actualicen los marcadores. También se pueden crear perfiles para organizar los favoritos y controlar independientemente las sincronizaciones de cada perfil (sólo necesario en caso de tener marcadores sensibles), además de alguna otra opción.

Sinceramente, si usáis más de un equipo frecuentemente os aconsejo que lo utilicéis Si alguien tiene alguna duda, puede preguntar en los comentarios.

I probably should have realised a lot sooner than I did, but there has been something a bit odd with my SpotIT feed on my RebootIT blog of late.

For some time now I’d been using an add-in for Firefox to manage my bookmarks.  This was produced by Foxmarks.com and allowed me to do various clever things such as synchronise my bookmarks between computers, access them on a special web page and notably share them with others via a web page or an RSS feed….

Foxmarks have extended their support to other browsers and renamed a while back to Xmarks.  Foolishly I never spotted the change to the RSS feed which was piping my list of useful bookmarks to my RebootIT blog.  So if you shared any of your bookmarks with Foxmarks and never updated your links when the name change took place I’d suggest you head on over to Xmarks.com and get the new URLs.

Fick hjälp med att ominstallera mina program. Världen blev nu lite snabbare och smidigare. Tog 4 timmar cirka. Men det var det värt… Det är som att ha en ny dator. Och inte är det Vista som jag har utan XP.
Alla verkar klaga på Vista. Så jag aktar mig noga så att jag inte fastnar i Vista nätet Och Foxmarks är också himla praktiskt.

Cuando instalo un sistema operativo, una de las cosas que hago es instalar el complemento de Firefox Foxmarks (existen una versiones para Explorer y para Safari, aunque no las he probado) y así recupero mis favoritos.

Empecé a utilizar Foxmarks cuando instalé GNU/Linux por primera vez. Tenía en mi ordenador la partición de Windows y la de Ubuntu. Gracias a este complemento, podía tener los mismos favoritos en los dos sistemas operativos.

Por otro lado, si vas a un cibercafé, o usas ocasionalmente  otro ordenador, no hace falta que instales nada. Con tu usuario y contraseña puedes entrar en la web de Foxmarks y ver tus favoritos.

This tutorial will show you how to setup Xmarks bookmark sync for Firefox. Xmarks (formerly called ‘Foxmarks’) is one of the most useful Firefox addon or extension. It syncs bookmarks (or favorites) between different computers.

It is extremely useful if you use two or more computers at home or office. It automatically syncs the bookmarks in all the computers, so that you will not have to wonder what website did you bookmark at home or office.

With Firefox 3, you can also sync passwords between different computers. This can be also very useful if you save passwords for various websites on different computers. (If you are using a shared computer, it is not advisable to sync passwords)

• To install the Xmarks, simply go to Tools, and click on Add-ons.
• Search for ‘Xmarks’ in ‘Get Add-ons’ tab. (You can also search the add on from Get Bookmark Add-ons)
• Install the addon.
• Restart the Firefox.
• You will be prompted the Xmarks Bookmark Sync Wizard.
• Follow the instructions.
• If you don’t have account with Foxmarks, you will need to set up. This is only one time setup, once you have account, you can sync any number of computers.
• You will also be prompted for ‘Password Sync’, you need to setup a PIN for password sync.
• For the first computer, You will select ‘Merge data on the server with data on this computer’.
• After that, For all computers, you can select ‘Keep Data on Server, discard Data on this computer’.

We have written volumes about password management here at WWD. The nature of our work, mobility and reliance on data in the cloud certainly makes it an important issue. I have long been a fan of the RoboForm Password Manager. Its ability to securely generate and remember the hundreds of passwords I maintain has been indispensable to me.

Up until recently, though, one of the challenges with using RoboForm has been easily keeping my passwords in sync on multiple machines. I resolved that issue by using the brilliant DropBox service to store my profiles, which is working just flawlessly for me. I noticed today, however, that the fine folks at Siber are currently beta testing a new service called RoboForm Online.

RoboForm Online utilizes Siber’s GoodSync software to facilitate the backup and synchronization of your password and profile data through their servers. Data is transferred securely between locations, and the encryption of your profile files is maintained. Setting a master password to access any RoboForm data is good practice, even if just used on a local machine.

The benefits are obvious: You can access your passwords in multiple locations as well as maintaining a backup of what is critical data.

Before I discovered and implemented my DropBox sync solution, I would have jumped all over this service. They are a little late to the party, though. Other services like Xmarks (formerly Xmarks) have already gained good traction as options in this space.

For me, now that I already have a workable solution, I don’t see much benefit to moving. But if you’re a current RoboForm Pro user getting started with multiple machines, this is a good option.

I’ve looked at other password management options and I’ve yet to find one that works as well for me as RoboForm. Honestly, the fact that it doesn’t support Chrome (s goog) or Opera is the main reason I still use Firefox as my preferred browser. It really is the program I can’t live without.

How do you manage and maintain your passwords?

After using the Foxmarks Favorites synchronization tool for a while I decided I needed to write a post on this great product.

Very recently Foxmarks has been renamed to XMarks, I assume to better reflect the fact the product can work with other browsers than just FireFox.

I was first introduced to the utility when I become a heavier Firefox user and it solved a problem for me that I am sure many users have. I heavily use Internet Favorites and have a fairly well organized and categorized set of folders and bookmarks. I also have 3 PCs that I use regularly and for reasons I wont bore you with as to why they are not on a domain and I don’t use roaming profiles (which would at least mean IE favorites remained centrally managed) for these systems.

The first thing that is really cool about Xmarks is that you can synchronize your browser favorites and user name and password combinations with the Xmarks server – obviously after considering carefully what types of passwords I want out there! So after doing that you now have an off site central repository for all your bookmarks. If you should then add a second PC to your set up you simply install the Xmarks add on and enter your details and immediately all your internet shortcuts are now on your new PC too. You can repeat this with as many PCs as you would like. You can choose whether to copy over any existing shortcuts on the new PC, or merge the server entires with the local ones, etc.

I also happen to use Internet Explorer a lot and in days gone by I would use the SyncToy utility, free from Microsoft, to ensure my IE Favorites were replicated between PCs. That’s fine, but it doesn’t help me with FireFox. Xmarks also happens to have a version that syncs with IE too. I therefore can ensure my different browsers, even on the same PC and across multiple PCs have the same favorites and if I add, delete or edit one in one place it is changed everywhere else.

Should I ever rebuild or lose my PC (and cant get my hands on an up to date backup!) then I can simply install Xmarks and bam, I have all my favorites back again.

The tool is simple, works great, saves time and effort and is free. I recommend you check out www.xmarks.com  – the latest version does a whole lot more than I have described including allowing you to set up profiles for home and work and how they are replicated.

3. Adblock Plus: eu aş muta această extensie pe locul 1, e diferenţa dintre o navigare pe internet plăcută şi o luptă continuă cu reclamele. Nu sunt împotriva reclamelor dar sunt unii publisheri care habar nu au cum să îşi păstreze vizitatorii fericiţi. Pe scurt: blochează reclamele pe baza voturilor comunităţii. Aveam extensia instalată +1.

4. Automatic Save Folder: extensia la care visam până să găsesc acest top. Nu mai caut după fişiere prin calculator, să văd unde au fost salvate, nu le mai salvez pe toate la grămadă. Are filtre dupa domeniu şi tip de fişier, în funcţie de filtre salvează fişierele în foldere predefinite de utilizator. Eu i-aş da un loc doi, fără să stau pe gânduri.

5. Tab Mix Plus: cea mai bună extensie de îmbunătăţire a taburilor. E unul dintre motivele pentru care nu schimb Firefox pentru alt browser. Un adevărat “productivity booster”. Locul 3, după mine. +1 punct, îl aveam instalat.

6. DownThemAll: manager selectiv de download. O extensie foarte puternică şi foarte utilă. Poţi alege să descarci doar fişierele .pdf de pe un anumit domeniu, poţi face descărcări multiple, redenumi fişierele după descărcare conform unor tipare, etc. E la egalitate cu Automatic Save Folder, se bat pentru locul 2. Na, că m-am încurcat. Ce facem cu locul 3? Trece automat pe 4? Nu contează, ideea de bază e că este extrem de utilă extensia. +1, o aveam deja instalată.

7. Better Gmail 2: îmbunătăţeşte felul în care vezi căsuţa de Gmail. Nu l-am folosit, promit să arunc un ochi şi dacă descopăr ceva interesant să vă anunţ.

8. Personal Menu: o extensie care elimină meniul orizontal şi face un meniu dropdown. Opţional lasă pe orizontală History şi Bookmarks. Mă bucur că nu l-am instalat, nu înţeleg ce caută în top 10.

9. Google Gears: o extensie de la Google care permite folosirea offline a Google Docs, Google Reader, Google Calendar (implicit şi o sincronizare) dar şi a altor siteuri care folosesc extensia: RememberTheMilk sau PassPack.

Pare tare extensia, doar de astăzi am instalat-o, odată cu înscrierea pe rememberthemilk.com. Mă bucur că voi avea acces şi la Google Reader sau Google Docs offline, când preamărita reţea ZAPP refuză să funcţioneze prin diferitele văgăuni pe unde umblu eu. Google Calendar nu folosesc deocamdata. +1, chiar dacă o am de câteva minute.

10. Autocopy: o extensie pe care aş recomanda-o doar duşmanilor.

We like it because we’re bloggers, having to quote and copy links and code every day, but anyone who does a fair amount of copying to and from the web will dig AutoCopy. Pot să spun doar că au înnebunit.  Adică orice text selectat e copiat automat. Ca pe Mirc. E un lucru foarte periculos, nu îţi dai seama când te trezeşti că îi dai paste din greşeală unui profesor un paragraf de pe piticigratis.com, când îi dai iubitei paste un link cu pozele cu amanta sau, cel mai frustrant, când copiezi ceva fără să vrei şi pierzi conţinutul preţios din clipboard.

Înţeleg că există oameni leneşi dar să te leneveşti la un Ctrl+C şi să rişti tot felul de încurcături mi se pare deja o prostie.

Locul 1 în lista extensiilor pe care să nu le instalaţi în vecii vecilor.

Oferă informaţii despre trendul traficului siteurilor vizitate, informaţii detaliate despre traficul siteurilor, siteuri asemănătoare siteurilor vizitate (o caracteristică extrem de utilă când vrei să găseşti mai multe siteuri din acelaşi domeniu) şi pe măsură ce o foloseşti adună date (ei spun că într-un mod anonim) despre ce vizitezi şi construiesc baza de date cu informaţiile despre trafic amintite mai sus.

3. FireBug: unealtă de dezasamblare live a siteurilor, oarecum asemănătoare cu Web Developer dar cu singura diferenţă că poţi vedea live rezultatul modificărilor făcute în cod. Recomand şi o “extensie la extensie”, YSlow, o unealtă creată de Yahoo pentru determinarea vitezei cu care se încarcă un site şi a cauzelor care îl încetinesc.

4. iMacros for Firefox: automatizează toată munca repetitivă. Se poate înregistra o secvenţă şi repeta de un număr x de ori sau la infinit. Completează formulare, ţine minte parole, etc. O folosesc deseori pentru a cumpăra şi dona materie primă de pe organizaţie pe firma producătoare de armament, în jocul eRepublik. Merge de minune şi e aducătoare de profituri virtuale.
