FoxyProxy is a useful extension to Firefox, but I’m always having to switch profiles back and forth as I take my laptop from work to home, and vice versa. I experimented with proxy PAC files without any success (mainly because laptops have multiple network adapters and the PAC scripts only detect your first IP address). Plus, as far as I can tell, PAC files are checked for every single HTTP request which must be a hit on browser performance.

Anyway, what I decided to do was directly modify the FoxyProxy config file before Firefox was run, and this would then select which FoxyProxy profile was used. The script below detects the host of something on my local network (which doesn’t exist at work) and switches accordingly. You could get it to switch on anything you like, but this works for me.

Ever since FF3 came out of the oven, we’ve all heard the complaints about Torbutton and its functionality (or lack thereof). Well Torbutton did serve its purpose in FF2, but not so much in FF3.

In fact not only is it unstable in FF3, it may even leak your private info. Besides that, Torbutton is notorious for changing settings without informing the user. I know certain constraints are to be met if you need true security (I.E. Disabling JavaScript etc…) but not letting the user choose this makes me a bit weary.

FoxyProxy doesn’t have these problems (last I checked).

To use Tor with FoxyProxy, first download Tor. Select the “stable” bundle. When installing, select Only Tor and Vidalia.

Select Tor and Vidalia only.

Tor is required, of course. And Vidalia gives you a nice interface to browse your connections and the network.

Then download FoxyProxy. Use Firefox to browse the link so you can install with one click.

Once installed and restarted, FF will show the FP button on the lower right corner of the browser. Click that, which will bring up the Options. Select Tor in the mode selection.

Torbutton (along with Privoxy in the bundle) used to be a nice and simple way to stay secure. Unfortunately FF3 was too good to refuse and TB couldn’t keep up.

As for load speeds, FP is almost exactly the same speed as Torbutton. Just as expected as you’re using the same proxy network, just a different utility to manage connections from the browser. As always, disabling JavaScript and Java is a good idea if you want to maintain anonymity to an appreciable degree.

The same goes for plugins such as Adobe, Flash, Silverlight etc…

After updating to 2.0.0.17, Firefox crashes if the FoxyProxy extension is installed. This renders the browser virtually useless. You won’t even be able to install the update that fixes this issue once there is one, since Firefox’ automatic update function does, of course, use SSL. Some of the links in this post also point to HTTPS URLs, so if you are reading this post using Firefox because you have this problem, read to the end but don’t click anywhere.

To fix this issue and get Firefox to work again, you’ll have to uninstall the FoxyProxy extension before accessing any HTTPS URL. If Firefox is configured to start with a blank or non-SSL page and you do not want to restore a session containing HTTPS pages, you can probably do so from within Firefox. Go to Tools -> Add-ons, select FoxyProxy in the list that opens, and uninstall. Or is disabling FoxyProxy sufficient? Please leave a comment if you tried; I didn’t.

If Firefox for some reason tries to load an HTTPS page automatically when it starts, you will have to edit your Firefox profile. On Windows, profile data are usually found under C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<random name>\. Note that Documents and Settings and Application Data may be named differently in localised versions of Windows. Under MacOS X the profile is stored under /Users/<your username>/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/<random name>, and on a Unix-style system such as Linux or *BSD you will probably find the path to you profile somewhere under your home directory. If you see a recently edited file named bookmarks.html, and the file contains your bookmarks, you found the right place.

Inside the profile directory you should see a subdirectory extensions and inside, one or more subdirectory. Find the one containing FoxyProxy, it will probably be named foxyproxy@eric.h.jung. Delete this subdirectory, or better move it elswhere just in case you made a mistake.

Now start Firefox again.

Quello che oggi vado a trattare è un argomento all’ordine del giorno.. sicurezza e anonimato in rete.

Negli anni Internet s’è evoluto ed ha attirato sempre più, purtroppo, gli occhi indiscreti su di se. Ultimamente la privacy sembra essere balzata al primo posto delle problematiche da affrontare nella programmazione dei nuovi browser (anche se alcuni come google chrome sembrano invece violarla…) ma ciò non basta.

C’è chi può avere la necessità di essere totalmente anonimo, far perdere traccia di se per qualsiasi motivo. Non sta a me giudicare se è bene o male che esistano tali tecniche… ma se vi può confortare, chi “fa danni” in rete, le conosce già da tempo e anche di migliori… questa guida è ovviamente indirizzata a chi vuole semplicemente proteggere la propria privacy in certe situazioni.

Veniamo a Tor.

Tor è un progetto software per difendersi dall’analisi del traffico, una forma di sorveglianza della rete che minaccia le libertà personali e la privacy, le attività e le relazioni riservate d’impresa, e la sicurezza di stato. Tor funziona deviando le tue comunicazioni attraverso una rete distribuita di relay, gestiti da volontari in tutto il mondo: impedisce a qualcuno che osservi la tua connesione Internet di sapere quali siti stai visitando, ed impedisce ai siti che visiti di venire a sapere dove sei realmente. Tor funziona con molti programmi, come i browser web, i client per la chat, i programmi di login remoto e tante altre applicazioni basate sul protocollo TCP. [cit. sito ufficiale di Tor]

In poche e semplici parole, il traffico internet viene fatto rimbalzare in vari pc di volontari, che ne fanno perdere traccia. Il pacchetti vengono spezzettati ed inviati ai “relay” in maniera totalmente casuale, non seguendo un tragitto prestabilito. Ogni “relay” comunica con gli altri relay crittografando il traffico. Alla fine un “punto di uscita” decodifica il traffico e comunica al vostro posto con il server.

Privoxy

Privoxy è semplicemente un proxy con capacità avanzate di filtraggio… se ben configurato aiuta a tener lontano dal nostro pc pubblicità, popup, ecc ecc.. ci sarà utile in questa guida per cambiare al volo l’user agent del nostro browser (cioè come sarà identificato il nostro pc. Sistema operativo, versione e browser) e nel frattempo essendo già configurato di default per filtrare un pò di robaccia, alleggerirà la vostra navigazione.

This is a little tutorial that should help you to set up Firefox for using Ultrasurf as Proxy. It should work on Windows as well as on Linux with either Ultrasurf running simply in Wine or as a daemon with ghostship. I will assume that you have already installed Ultrasurf (for detailed instructions on how to do that with wine, look here).

tl;dr: Server: 127.0.0.1, Port: 9666

1. Start Ultrasurf (or ghostship) for the first time. If you use ghostship, read on at step 6 (or if you require that Ultrasurf uses a proxy itself, run ghostship --viewer and follow the next steps).

2. The main interface appears now. Click Option (which should actually be named Options, but that does not matter – the software works anyway ).

3. Again, you will get another dialog right in your face. This time, check Do not use IE because we are talking about Firefox and not Internet Explorer and Hide Golden Lock because the image of a golden lock at the bottom right is not useful anymore (it should tell whether Ultrasurf has set the IE to use it or not).

4. Optionally, you can make Ultrasurf itself use a proxy by clicking Proxy Settings. This is only required if you can’t access the Internet without using a proxy in your local network or if you want to chain multiple proxy applications in a row.

5. Close the Options GUI (picture above) by clicking OK and the main window by clicking Exit. Then start Ultrasurf again, just as in step 1.

6. Start up Firefox, navigate to checkip.dyndns.org and write down your current IP somewhere.

7. Now you should think about whether you would like to always use Ultrasurf (easier, continue with step 12) or depending on a white- or blacklist with specific sites (read on) and/or with a icon in Firefox that allows easy switching on the fly.

8. Install the Firefox Add-On FoxyProxy by opening this website and clicking Add to Firefox as well as in the popping up dialog on Install Now.

9. Restart Firefox.

10. After that, you will be greeted with a dialog that asks whether you would like to set up FoxyProxy for usage with TOR. In this tutorial, you don’t need to do this as the onion router is  a completely different proxy application and should therefore click on No, but you might want to do it anyway if you have TOR installed.

11. Foxyproxy is a very powerful application that allows – as mentioned before – the usage of proxys depending on lists just to name one big feature. Keep in mind that Ultrasurf will listen on your loopback IP, which is always 127.0.0.1 (that information might also be called server), on the port 9666. You can now either do a very simple setup that allows you to switch proxys on the fly by following this tutorial, or dive right into the official FoxyProxy documentation and learn how to use the more advanced features. Continue when you have Ultrasurf set up.

12. Open up Firefox’ preferences by clicking Edit/Preferences (Windows users will find it in the Tools menu).

13. Navigate to Advanced, Network and set up a pretty high cache, like in the screenshot below (1024 MB). This will make sure that Firefox downloads only new data and keeps the old on the harddrive, thus speeding up the surfing experience and keeping away unnecessary traffic from Ultrasurf.

14. If you use FoxyProxy, click Close and continue with step 16 now. otherwise click Settings.

15. In the new GUI, click Manual proxy configuration, Use this proxy server for all protocols and fill in the following data:

After that, click OK.

Seit gulli einst über southparkstudios.com, die offizielle Southpark-Seite auf der man alle (!) Episoden kostenlos anschauen kann, geschrieben hat, habe ich mir dort viele Folgen angeschaut. Noch mehr gefreut hatte mich dann das Update, welches 720p-Streaming erlaubte Heute habe ich bei yoschi dann gesehen, dass es das Portal nun auch auf Deutsch gibt. An sich nicht schlecht, dachte ich mir, schließlich kenne ich viele, die einfach keine Lust haben sich Filme/Serien auf Englisch anzusehen, wobei ich nicht zu diesen gehöre. Ganz im Gegenteil, ich finde es schön Filme und Serien in der jeweiligen Originalsprache (insofern ich diese verstehe) anzuschauen. Deshalb war ich auch etwas schockiert, als ich während dem schreiben dieses Blogeintrags auf southparkstudios.com folgendes lesen durfte:

Ich will die Folgen weiterhin auf Englisch genießen können. Deshalb will ich an dieser Stelle im Gegensatz zu yoschi und apt-get-update verraten, wie man diese Sperre umgehen kann. Man benötigt einen USA-Proxy wie etwa Ultrasurf (rennt schön mit Wine unter Linux) und das Firefox-Addon FoxyProxy. Als Default Proxy stellt man die Direkte Internetverbindung ein (wenn man FoxyProxy nur für Southparkstudios konfiguriert haben will) und fügt dann einen neuen Proxy hinzu. Ultrasurf lauscht auf Port 9666 von localhost. Wichtig ist jetzt bei dem neu hinzugefügten Proxy folgendes einzugeben (Wildcards):

Das ganze funktioniert so, dass die HTML-Seiten (3. Filter) alle über Ultrasurf geleitet werden (dort finden Serverseitig die Abfragen nach IP->Land statt), aber der wirkliche Content (Bilder, Videos, Flash-Kram) vorbeigeleitet wird (-> schön schnell über die eigentliche Leitung). Falls man keine anderen Proxys bei FoxyProxy eingetragen hat, kann man die Blacklist-Filter auch weglassen.

UPDATE2: Laut nerdcore kommen die Englischen Episoden bald auf das deutsche Portal:

When I interact with any electronic device I’m quite paranoid. When I sweep my credit card I fear that the shop could clone it. When I collect money from the ATM I check if someone is looking, I cover my hand when entering the PIN number and do fake movements with my fingers while typing it. When I browse the web, I want to make sure that nothing I want to keep secret could spill and go in the hands of someone I don’t want. When I see advertisements that are based on my search history I shiver and ask myself if there’s a way to prevent it. I never publish something that I don’t want my worst enemies to see.
I use Firefox, mainly because it is more secure than Internet Explorer, secondly because I grew addicted to some add-ons that would make me feel too vulnerable if absent.
Thinking about the risks related to browsing, my list of possible enemies (and their possible plans to steal my data) is:

1. Other users of the computer (snoop personal files)
2. Administrator of the computer (snoop personal files, key-logger, spyware, remote desktop…)
3. Malware (key-logger, spyware)
4. Thieves (retrieve passwords/secrets from stolen media)
5. Detectives (retrieve browsing history and information/secrets from confiscated media)
6. ISP (wiretapping)
7. Web sites (tracking cookies, javascript exploits, browser vulnerabilities)

Now I will explore more in details the scenarios and the possible defenses. Based on those scenarios, at the end I will describe my personal solution; you can skip this list if you are more interested in “how” and less interested in “why”.

1. Users: This looks easy. In Firefox, most of the traces of your web browsing are in your Firefox profile folder (More information here: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Profiles), and everything else is what you explicitly download from sites. If you can hide that folder from other users of the computer, it seems enough. Both in Windows and in Linux this is the default behavior. The problem is, if an user boots the PC with a live CD they can access everything on the hard disk. In extreme cases, they could remove the hard disk entirely, plug it and copy it on another machine and put it back in place. It’s better to encrypt your profile folder then. Windows offers EFS (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457065.aspx) as an easy way to encrypt folders; it should be enough in most situations but it must be noted that is not completely secure (http://www.serverwatch.com/tutorials/article.php/2106831).
2. Admin: This is hard. Dare I say impossible. An administrator has access to all the files and can install any kind of software, for example a key-logger or a spyware. You could encrypt your data, but the way you decrypt it could be monitored and your passwords could be easily retrieved. The best solution is to buy something like a netbook, connect it and browse from there.
3. Malware: common sense and good software are the two main weapons against this threat. If a user does not execute programs from unknown sources the risks are very low. Add a good antivirus and a good anti spyware to the mix and everything will be fine.
4. Thieves: Laptops are great, but when you lose them you realize with horror that what’s inside could be used against you. Messages from your secret lover, your boss’ dirty work proof, your passwords, your browsing habits. Everything could be stored or cached in your profile folders. One of the greatest expert of computer security explains (better than I will ever do) how to protect your data: http://www.schneier.com/essay-199.html. If encrypting everything is not what you need, but you just want to keep your browsing secret, then encrypting just the profile folder is fine.
5. Detectives: This situation is awkward. Maybe you are suspect of stalking a woman, and they get an order to confiscate your hard drive, and the fact that you have naughty sites in your history won’t help the jury to think you’re innocent. Just to be clear, I’m obviously not talking about hiding the proof of an illegal action; the tool itself is neither innocent nor guilty, it’s the user. One possible security measure could be keeping the profile on a removable drive and remove all traces of that profile on the hard disk.
6. ISP: Your provider could snoop your Internet traffic. They have all the tools to do it. Maybe the ISP is honest but one of their employees is not. For this reason (but not only for this reason), it is important to control that when you enter an important password or when you access a private document, the site location starts with https:// . This is a good indicator that the ISP cannot see what you are transmitting and receiving, even if it’s not completely secure (http://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-10129693-83.html). There are some systems that provide better security (in exchange for performance), such as encrypted proxy servers and Tor. Those services enable anonymous and encrypted traffic from your computer to their servers. If you use those systems, your browsing traffic will be as secure as the system you use (in case of Tor: very secure).
7. Web sites: The Internet itself is a dark cloud. Most of the sites we usually visit are clean, but there are some exceptions. In order to avoid those exceptions, the safest route is to protect us from the most common vectors of attack. Personally, I beware of cookies and javascript. Some information about cookies security issues can be found here: http://www.w3.org/Security/Faq/wwwsf2.html . About javascript, it’s code from an external source that executes on your browser seamlessly. It means there will always be security threats from javascript, in different shapes and procedures. The problem is that javascript and cookies are everywhere, and disabling them means closing the door to most Web functionalities. My solution is to block javascript and cookies for every site except for a white-list of “trusted” sites that form 90% of my browsing.

This is my personal solution for secure Firefox browsing, that assumes a PC with Internet connection, the ability to attach a USB stick and assumes having administrator privileges for TrueCrypt encrypted volume mounting. Disclaimer: This solution is presented “as is” and does not imply that you will not have security problems and is not intended to work on 100% of the computers.

1. Take a USB stick drive and plug it.
2. Download TrueCrypt from here: http://www.truecrypt.org/downloads.php
3. Extract TrueCrypt and copy it on the removable drive.
4. Open TrueCrypt from the USB stick (it is called Traveler mode, more info here: http://www.truecrypt.org/docs/truecrypt-portable.php)
5. Create a new encrypted file container (100MB is enough for me) like this: http://www.truecrypt.org/docs/tutorial.php
6. Mount the encrypted volume as a removable drive (e.g. on letter S:). Note that this is the part that requires administrator privileges.
7. Create a new folder in the encrypted volume that will contain the Firefox profile.
8. Create an icon (or a launcher) on the encrypted volume that opens Firefox with the option “-Profile <folder>”, where <folder> is the profile folder you just created.
9. Close any Firefox that is running.
10. Open Firefox with the newly created launcher. The profile folder will be populated with default files by Firefox.
11. Install the NoScript Firefox add-on (http://noscript.net/)
12. Install the CookieSafe Firefox add-on (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2497)
13. Install the Foxyproxy Firefox add-on and setup Tor (http://foxyproxy.mozdev.org/faq.html)
14. Browse the web (finally!).
15. Close Firefox.
16. Dismount encrypted volume from TrueCrypt.
17. Choose to remove USB stick safely and when safe unplug it.
18. To open the profile again, plug in the USB stick, open TrueCrypt, mount the volume and run the launcher.

Note: If you have issues regarding the lifespan of your USB stick, you can copy the encrypted volume on the hard drive, mount it from there and copy it back on the USB stick when you’re done.
If you are not the administrator of the machine you could deviate from this solution as follows (instructions for a Windows PC):
Instead of steps 2 to 8:

• Download Eraser Portable and 7-zip Portable from here: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=151265
• Install Eraser Portable and 7-zip Portable on your USB drive.
• Go to “Start” -> “Run…” and type “%tmp%” to access your temporary directory.
• Create a new folder (named for example VaultDir) in your temporary directory that will be your vault folder.
• Create a new folder in the vault folder that will be your profile folder.
• Create a new shortcut to Firefox in the vault folder. Open its properties (Alt+Enter).
• Add the option “-Profile <folder>” at the end of the “Target” entry, where <folder> is the profile folder you just created (for example VaultDir). Clear the “Start In” entry.

Instead of steps 16:

• Create a VaultClose.bat file in your USB drive that has commands similar to the following ones:

Notes: You should replace the directories with the correct ones. %cd% is a special variable that expands to the current directory. The -mhe option encrypts also the file names and directory structure. Eraser does not support relative paths. The “-method Random 2″ option is slightly less secure but faster. Feel free to remove this option if you want more security.

• Create a VaultOpen.bat file in your USB drive that has a command similar to the following one:

• Run VaultClose.bat. It will ask for a password, then it will compress and encrypt the vault folder and securely delete the uncompressed one.
• When you want to access the secure profile you can run VaultOpen.bat and enter the password. The vault folder will be populated and opened in an explorer window, and then you can run the Firefox launcher.
