Art and Maths together: Fractals

Thats right. You can use simple mathematics to create beautiful images and art work. There are enough examples in nature for doing so. It is called Fractal.

Basically a Fractal is an image in which some smaller image is repeatedly fitted to create patterns.

See this Triangle Fractal. Basically you are creating patterns by making triangles fit within the triangle.

Now you can use the same technique for a different triangle to create a snowflake. Maths to make drawings of snowflakes – well here you go-

To create a Koch snowflake, one begins with an equilateral triangle and then replaces the middle third of every line segment with a pair of line segments that form an equilateral “bump.” One then performs the same replacement on every line segment of the resulting shape, ad infinitum. With every iteration, the perimeter of this shape increases by one third of the previous length. The Koch snowflake is the result of an infinite number of these iterations, and has an infinite length, while its area remains finite. For this reason, the Koch snowflake and similar constructions were sometimes called “monster curves.” Citation-Wikipedia

Now to create a leaf- see the leaf consists of smaller leafs and smaller leafs.

Hey even nature uses maths here-this is a fractal shape.

is this art- well Jackson Pollock thought so

While Pollock’s paintings appear to be composed of chaotic dripping and splattering, computer analysis has found fractal patterns in his work.[7]

From wikipedia

Here is the equation-

A fractal is “a rough or fragmented geometric shape that can be split into parts, each of which is (at least approximately) a reduced-size copy of the whole,”[1] a property called self-similarity. Roots of mathematical interest in fractals can be traced back to the late 19th Century; however, the term “fractal” was coined by Benoît Mandelbrot in 1975 and was derived from the Latin fractus meaning “broken” or “fractured.” A mathematical fractal is based on an equation that undergoes iteration, a form of feedback based on recursion.[2]

A fractal often has the following features:[3]

It has a fine structure at arbitrarily small scales.

It is too irregular to be easily described in traditional Euclidean geometric language.

It is self-similar (at least approximately or stochastically).

It has a Hausdorff dimension which is greater than its topological dimension (although this requirement is not met by space-filling curves such as the Hilbert curve).[4]

-

A fractal is a rough or fragmented geometric shape that can be split into parts, each of which is a smaller copy of the whole, a property called self-similarity. Fractals describe many real-world objects that do not have simple geometric shapes, such as clouds, mountains, turbulence and coastlines. -- From The Webster Dictionary

Human beings are made up of fractals — endlessly repeating patterns. Generation after generation, we unconsciously act from the program in our DNA as well as the program passed down to us by our ancestors. We are naturally programmed to tell our children what we were told, and no matter how hard some of us try not to “turn into our parents,” we find ourselves acting or behaving the way we remember them behaving when we were young. This is because of the repetition of a program that runs in our mind, our energetic makeup and our physical body. And yet we are not responsible for our program until we gain the awareness that the program exists at all. We cannot change our perception of life and the world until we realize we are perceiving everything based on what was given to us as children. Only then can we break the pattern that unconsciously seeks an outlet for repetition.

Look at the pattern on this leaf - it echoes the shape of the tree that the leaf came from!

A few days ago, I was sitting by a display of pianos for sale in the middle of a shopping mall. A young girl about six years-old was coming out of a store with her mother, saw the pianos and exclaimed with excitement, “I want to play!” Her mother’s immediate reaction was, “Well, you can’t. They don’t allow you to play the pianos unless you’re buying one. And anyway, you can’t play the piano!” It was said with total disdain and nearly broke my heart. If that message and the energy behind it entered the little girl’s mind, what are the chances that she’s ever going to attempt to play a piano? I began to judge the girl’s mother for the negative message she was transmitting, and then I remembered that she probably heard the same kinds of messages on her journey to adulthood. Like any form of life, we are the product of repetition and a reflection of those who raised us, impacting the little ones we raise in the same ways.

Is it really possible to break this unconscious pattern? Yes! First you must realize that there is a pattern, and figure out what it is. What do you believe, and who believed it before you? How far was it handed down through your ancestry? Go inside and ask the part of you that is connected with Truth (we all have access to this inner wisdom), if what you believe is true. Ask yourself how it serves your life to believe what you believe about money, sex, relationships, parenting, diet, and what it means to be a “good” person. Keep the beliefs that serve you well, and find the ones that make you suffer. Practice consciously deleting beliefs from your program by telling yourself the truth, which is that the beliefs making you suffer are not true. They’re all lies! It’s not true that money is evil. It’s not true that you’re a slut if you…(fill in the blank.) It’s not true that it’s selfish to take the last cookie. Etc. These beliefs are subtle and it may take a little while for your deeper subconscious to release them, but the more you practice consciously letting them go the more your program will evolve.

Real change at a deep level is possible because all of life is evolving. We see it happening on the planet everywhere. Different species evolve. Viruses adapt and evolve. This means that the consciousness manifesting as everything is in a constant state of evolution. Therefore, we can support our own evolution by changing our program. If we have compassion and don’t judge ourselves for believing what we were taught, we won’t suffer during the process of change. That is a very important point — to remember that the program running through you is not your fault. You didn’t choose it and you didn’t create it. It is the burden we are all given as children. Part of the transformation to conscious adulthood is to see the load we are carrying and let it go.

A peacock fractal!

You can consciously cut the ties to the program of your ancestors through guided visualization. Close your eyes and envision all the people that came before you. See the energetic chords that connect you with family and culture. Send the ancestors love and gratitude for the program they have passed to you unconsciously, which has made you who you are today. And then using your hands, gently cut the chords or remove them from the places they connect to your body. You are now an individual entity, freestanding and supported by the Earth, rather than held in place by your past conditioning. Think of the parts of your program you no longer want, and send them back to the earth where they came from. See the old program draining from your body down into the earth, far down into the earth’s core. See it being eaten and destroyed in order to become something else. That is what the earth does. It takes dead matter and transforms it back into new life. When this is done, notice if there are any empty spaces in your body and mind where the old program or belief system used to dwell. Fill that space with healing light, and with the new beliefs you wish to carry with you — the beliefs that will make you happy. The way to do this is just to imagine it happening. Imagine the light filling up those empty spaces, and say thank you to your ancestors and to the earth. Life, the earth and your ancestors will support you in this, because through your evolution, you bring your ancestors with you and they are given the opportunity to evolve and grow. After all, You are the Creator; You are The One. You can change the dream, you can change the world, you can do anything you want.

While I was watching a film the other day, I happened to come across a quote at the end among the credits… And having read it, I found that it touched a deep resonant chord within me about the nature of our reality and Being… And from this “chord” posited a beautifully simple, yet wondrously elegant, understanding about why We came into being…

For… When given the chance to do something… Surely it is in our nature to do, rather than not? Probability is everything… And as chance sometimes provides that possibility, so atoms take a chance on complexity, coming together in a gradually evolving divine countenance of planetary habituation… A habituation that many of us still see as “every-day” Life.

Perhaps as and when we choose to depart from this mundane acceptance of existence, and clearly stride towards a better realization of self, we might begin to See and understand what it is that Sri Aurobindo talks of here…

Sri Aurobindo (Aurobindo Ghosh) (August 15, 1872 December 5, 1950) was an Indian nationalist and freedom fighter, poet, philosopher, and yogi. He joined the movement for India’s freedom from British rule and for a duration (1905 10), became one of its most important leaders, before turning to developing his own vision and philosophy of human progress and spiritual evolution.

The central theme of Sri Aurobindo’s vision is the evolution of life into a “life divine”. In his own words: “Man is a transitional being. He is not final. The step from man to superman is the next approaching achievement in the earth’s evolution. It is inevitable because it is at once the intention of the inner spirit and the logic of Nature’s process”.

The principal writings of Sri Aurobindo include, in prose, The Life Divine, The Synthesis of Yoga, Secrets of the Vedas, Essays on the Gita, The Human Cycle, The Ideal of Human Unity, Renaissance in India and other essays, Supramental Manifestation upon Earth, The Future Poetry, Thoughts and Aphorisms and several volumes of letters. In poetry, his principal work is “Savitri – a Legend and a Symbol” in blank verse.

Donna Haraway’s Cyborg manifesto explores some angst about heteronormative conditioning and ho

Donna Haraway’s Cyborg manifesto explores some angst about heteronormative conditioning and how “cyborg imagery can suggest a way out of the maze of dualisms.” (p. 37) She discusses issues relating to how technology is already all around us and that it has become invisible. It is almost impossible to live without some form of electronics — making us, users of these devices, cyborgs ourselves. I was intrigued by her description of these devices as ‘floating signifiers’ of ‘masculinist politics’, and yet the ability for a more feminist — or open-framework — becomes possible by subversive uses of technology that seek to include difference in the ‘masculine-cyborg’ equation. The dystopian version, that the film Metropolis (Lang, 1929) demonstrates with the feminine-marginalized attempt to penetrate the masculine-dominant realm, loses and is replaced by a fabricated cyborg. However, the invisibility of cyborg-technology today — as opposed to 1927 — renders it as a sort of chameleon which can manifest itself in many ways — like marginalized groups and the use of social media — penetrating the patriarchal domain is easier in a ‘porous’ post-industrial world.

Metropolis (1927)

The organic/machine binary is another dualism that is being broken down, as seen at Kevin Warwick’s website. Collapsing binaries is a key point for Haraway’s Cyborg manifesto and another such example she posits, dealing with evolution, explains that “teaching modern Christian creationism should be fought as a form of child abuse” (p. 30). She explains the collapse of the animal/human binary, as explored in Darwin’s The Origin of Species and how one species turns into another, which can facilitate viewing the collapse of patriarchal-dominance in the wake of a more feminine-marginalized presence. The current war in the Middle East is a good example of how the ‘total-control’ mindset of the military is losing to a marginalized-fragmented group of passionate people. Without placing any value judgments here, it is easy to see how binary relationships can be exhausted and broken. Scientists can now make visible the invisible, with the use of fractals, and see order in chaos and vise-versa. Just as Haraway’s cyborg theory allows us to consider duality as a ’spiral dance’. (I think my ipod is set on shuffle.)

The article reported on the findings of research done at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) as it was published at the ‘2009 European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) conference’ held in Amsterdam.

Experiments done by Sebastien Huet and Aurélien Bancaud in a research group led by Jan Ellenberg at the EMBL in Heidelberg, Germany, tracked the movement of molecules within cells, this was then compared the pattern of movement against mathematical models. It was found that, large molecules moved according to the same rules as small molecules, suggesting that their environment was therefor fractal.

The researches were able to track the behaviour of the cells by means of injecting live mouse cells in a lab dish with fluorescent molecules. They were able to track the molecules with this special type of imaging in microbiology called fluorescence microsopy. The study focused on how cells can keep track of gene activity or gene expression through chromatins in the cell nucleus. Basically this process takes place to ensure the right molecules interact with each other at the right time and in the right place in the cells. Huet and Bancaud found that the molecules moved as if they were having to navigate obstacles (but there are no barriers, as they exist in other parts of the cell) to navigate around in the cell nucleus. When the team looked at the behaviour of different sized molecules, they saw that large molecules were obstructed to the same degree as small molecules in the cell nucleus.

Meaning molecules behaved differently for each type of chromatin with its own distinct fractal characteristics. All this information could be used to learn exactly how cells use a fractal structure to change the behaviour of proteins to change particular DNA sequences and skip whole other parts of the DNA sequence. It’s also expected that with insight into these fractal structures researches can learn how to better target certain areas of DNA for study or perhaps in the future even for new types of treatment for disease.

The List of dinosaur-bearing rock formations received a major update, namely that the name of pretty much every stratigraphic unit of formation rank or higher that has ever been reported as producing dinosaur fossils was added. Since that’s like, 500 of them and 120 kb of information, I needed to split the article up.

Space Fractal 1

I created the List of stratigraphic units with dinosaur body fossils and List of stratigraphic units with dinosaur trace fossils which will collectively house all the names, and may need to be split again by the time I get all the names sorted out. I have no clue when that will be, I’m not even halfway done splitting up the original article. A shoot-from-the-hip guess would be about three weeks.

My deviantART gallery has been updated with the first of a new art project for me, Space Fractal 1. Merging space imagery with fractals was an idea I had a week or two ago, but I hadn’t had the chance to try it until yesterday. I’ve never seen anyone do anything like this before and I hope I stumbled onto something original here.
