For the past two weeks my oldest daughter and I have worked very hard on learning fractions. She has

For the past two weeks my oldest daughter and I have worked very hard on learning fractions. She has struggled with this concept more than any other. Long division was a breeze compared to this. She was frustrated. I was frustrated. I walked her through each problem. Sometimes we’d only work a few problems then take a break. Nothing seemed to help. She could answer all my questions as we worked together, but knowing how to set up the word problems that contained fractions still eluded her. Figuring out what more I could do eluded me.

Every time she came to a problem with a fraction, she would ask for help. I worked each problem with her, but she did not achieve a greater understanding. She would need help on the next problem. At wits end, I calmly but firmly refused to help her with her fractions homework. I told her to, “Do your best. If you get it wrong, then it’s just wrong. You’ll just have to fail this part.” I figured that we’d just return to it next year. Hopefully maturing a little would help.

If you think that she finished quickly, you couldn’t be more wrong. After an hour and a half, she still had not completed the first problem. She sat there insisting that she needed help or crying. I didn’t think I could help anymore without getting frustrated. I thought her failing this section would be better than the both of us going through the “emotional math wringer”. She eventually started working on the problems and got through all but one (3.5 hours later). She gave one last ditch, “I need help” for the final problem. I kept my answer the same, “Just do your best. If it’s wrong, it’s wrong”.

I completely scandalized my friend who overheard this while on the phone with me. She felt I needed to give her a hug, words of encouragement, then allow her to take a break. My tactic sounded harsh to her. Yet, I felt like my daughter needed to get through this. There had to be a point when she wouldn’t succeed. Failure had to be an option.

I admit, I felt rather devoid of proper feelings after this conversation. I didn’t want to hug my daughter, dry her tears, and tell her it would be alright. I sure didn’t feel motherly. Her tears had not moved me to release her early. Rather, I was determined that she complete what was started. My daughter failed to learn a lesson properly, and I failed to teach it. It was no longer about the math. There was a bigger lesson here. It was about doing something hard, failing, and getting up again.

When she was finally done, she gave me a hug and said, “It was hard”. “I know,” I replied “It was hard for me too. You can’t be afraid to fail.” She looked very sheepish. I told her that her Aunt thought I should have given her a big hug and a break earlier. She laughed and said it wouldn’t have worked, she would have gone right back to crying! After I checked her work, she was very pleased to have gotten a few right. She said the three she got right meant more to her than getting most of her problems right easily, because she had to work so hard. She was beaming with triumph. She failed and succeeded at the same time. I let her call her Aunt.

Singular words and phrases No, I don’t mean remarkable or extraordinary words. I mean words and phr

Singular words and phrases

No, I don’t mean remarkable or extraordinary words. I mean words and phrases that are singular. In other words, should we say: ‘Either the pot or the kettle is black’ or ‘Either the pot or the kettle are black?’

I’m talking about words like:

Either

Neither

None

Or

Each

And the phrases:

One or more

The number of

A number of

One of the

Three fifths, two thirds etc

Either

Either is singular which means it is correct to write:

Either the pot or the kettle is black.

Neither

Neither is singular which means it is correct to write:

Neither the pot nor the kettle is black.

Either and neither – a slight complication

Look at this sentence:

Neither the doctors nor the nurses were prepared to go on strike.

Because ‘doctors’ is plural and ‘nurses’ is plural this sentence is correct – you wouldn’t write:

Neither the doctors nor the nurses was prepared to go on strike.×

Similarly:

Either the doctors or the nurses were there throughout the day.

You wouldn’t write:

Either the doctors or the nurses was there throughout the day.×

This slight complication is not too daunting, as you can easily ‘hear’ what’s right and what’s wrong.

None

None is (usually) singular – after all, it is a shortened form of ‘not one’. For example:

There are several doctors on duty, but none is available at present.

Oh yes, that ‘usually’. Some authorities say it is acceptable to make ‘none’ plural if it sounds really wrong or pretentious when made singular. But I think it’s safest to keep it singular. Just read ‘not one’ for ‘none’ when checking your writing, and you’ll get it right. After all, you wouldn’t write:

There are several doctors on duty, but not one are available at present.×

Or

Or is singular. Look at the following incorrect sentences:

Beef or pork are fine for the main course. ×

I have told the interior designer that linen or cotton are acceptable. ×

These should be:

Beef or pork is fine for the main course.

I have told the interior designer that linen or cotton is acceptable.

Each

Each is singular. For example:

Each of the patients was seen separately.

Not ‘were seen separately’

Each of the reports was read in turn.

Not ‘were read in turn’

One or more

One or more is singular. Read this sentence from a medical website:

In addition, 53 per cent of men and women in the United States report that one or more of their close relatives have a drinking problem.

That sentence should end:

…has a drinking problem.

The number of

‘The number of’ is singular. For example:

The number of schools with good results has dropped.

The number of adults who cannot read is gradually falling.

A number of

A number of is always plural, for example:

A number of schools have made improvements this year.

A number of adults have decided to learn to read.

One of the…

This phrase often causes confusion. For example, look at this incorrect sentence:

Mr Smith is one of the committee members who agrees with the proposals.×

This should be:

Mr Smith is one of the committee members who agree with the proposals.

You can check this by taking out the first part of the sentence:

…the committee members who agree with the proposals.

You would not write:

…the committee members who agrees with the proposals.

Fractions

Look at these two correct sentences:

Three-fifths of the people are happy to take part in the survey.

Three-fifths of the work is already done.

The first is correct because ‘people’ is plural.

The second is correct because ‘work’ is singular.

You can usually trust your ears to tell you if the sentence is correct. For example, the following just sounds horrible:

Three-fifths of the people is happy to take part in the survey.

Love is difficult when you have a proper fraction (…and you thought it felt right, huh?). When you get the reciprocal, it becomes an improper fraction. And to make it proper, you come up with a mixed number, which, of course, makes things so much complicated.

We need fractions so we can figure out how many pieces are in a whole. The word fraction actually comes from the Latin word “fractio”which means to break. Whole numbers can be broken down into fractions that represent a part of a whole number. Fractions are used in everyday life to measure ingredients, divide the hour when we tell time, interpret gas prices, and understand the value of money. We begin to learn how to use fractions from a young age and advance on those skills throughout grade school. However, some children find it difficult to understand fractions, so a firm foundation of learning the basics is highly important.

A fraction is the ratio of two whole numbers. It is one whole number divided by another whole number. The top part of a fraction is called the numerator and the bottom is called the denominator. In the fraction ½, the numerator is 1 and the denominator is 2. Normally the numerator is smaller than the denominator. This is called a proper fraction. When the numerator is larger than the denominator, it is called an improper fraction. Example:7/2.

Children usually begin to learn fractions in about the second or third grade. A good visual lesson on understanding fractions is to take a whole pie and cut it into pieces. Children also learn fractions by equating them with money. There are 4 quarters in a dollar, so one quarter is ¼ of a dollar. By the fourth grade, students learn to compare fractions with common denominators. They should be able to shade a portion of a circle to represent a fraction. In the 5th grade, student learn to add fractions and understand uncommon denominators and equivalent fractions. It is important to understand the concept of fractions from a young age, because as education progresses, fractions are used to teach more and more complex math skills.

(Hauschka – Im Schlaf (Where Were You?))
