1.  Gosselin vs. Grace:

How the hell did this become a best-of-seven series?  Why is Nancy Grace, a former prosecutor and present super-annoying talk-show firehose, opining on Jon and Kate Gosselin’s marital woes?  No one has been accused of a crime, unless wearing cubic zirconia counts.  (Perhaps it does.  Check the laws in your state!)  When guessing about the Gosselins’ finances, Grace puts Jon down for having diamond earrings, then professes not to care when he tells her they’re CZs.  Nancy, it does matter.  Diamonds cost a lot of money.  Faux diamonds, on the other hand, come free with a piercing at Claire’s Boutique.  Jonny?  Try wearing some real earrings, like a skull impaled with a lightning bolt or a bloody dagger.  Add a thin, patchy porn-stache, followed by a mullet.  When you rematch Ms. Grace on The Insider, she’ll either punch you, or jump you, or both.

2.  Frances Bean Cobain vs. Ali Lohan:

Two relatives of the uber-famous are duking it via Twitter.  OK, Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love’s daughter seems to be the aggressor here, blasting Lindsay Lohan’s little sis for her “sense of entitlement,” apparently because Lohan put out a holiday music CD cryptically called Lohan Holiday.  I assume a Lohan holiday would involve subpoenas, interventions, rehab, famous DJs, and gallons of rum spiked with droplets of egg nog.  Frances, tons of people put out CDs, and even rightly famous people put out terrible music.  Although in your defense, Ali Lohan’s “Christmas Magic”  is absolutely atrocious.  Ali, judging from your video featuring a sign with the truncated “X-mas,” you obviously hate Christmas.  Why do you hate all that is good and holy?  Why do you hate America?  Simmer down you two, and realize that the only reason anyone is atwitter about your back-and-forth (or maybe just forth) is because you are celebrity kin and thus “entitled” to have your vapid utterances reported.

3. Suri Cruise Gets Sleepy:

Are you serious?  This is somehow newsworthy anywhere?  No, it isn’t, but paparazzi photogs gots to get paid.  These shots were a little too innocuous to fabricate lies about Katie cramming Suri full of Lunesta so she could go buy bondage accoutrement to wear to trampling parties.  So make up a “story” about TomKat’s daughter sacking out after being carried around a store for a few hours.  Just a small point of contention: maybe it’s not the shopping the made Suri all sweepy-pie.  Maybe it’s that she’s a frigging toddler who’s exhausted because her cells are dividing at a rate rivaling the creature in Species so she can grow up to be the daughter of famous people and develop a sense of entitlement.  At least she’s not sitting in the middle of an aisle crossing her arms, alternately holding her breath and screaming at the top of her lungs, which is what I do when I get dragged shopping and I’m in my 30s.

4.  NASA Attacks Moon:

The moon was talkin’ shit, so NASA had to get swole.  Totally worth $79 million.

Thanks, entertainment media, for giving one-degree-of-separation celebs the platform to bash other pseudo-celebs for using their genetic relationship to celebs to try to be celebs!

Y aún sigo escuchando el mismo disco, una y otra vez. 11 años. 11 años desde que una amiga me dijo que se iba a pasar por la Fnac y le di dinero para que me trajese el disco. ¡11 años!

En aquella época, Courtney Love brillaba. En serio, no sólo llevaba brillantina en el pelo… Su carrera cinematrográfica estaba en su mejor momento, era portada de todas las revistas por su trabajo y mucha gente no veía en ella tan sólo la viuda de Kurt Cobain. Además, Courtney decidó dar un vuelco al estilo de su música. Si en el 91 Courtney narraba a través del ruido, las guitarras repetitivas y gritos llenos de rabia y en el 94 se incluyó melodía al asunto – en 1998 la melodía comenzó a reinar, dotando a las canciones de una luminosidad con la que maquillar la oscuridad de las letras de Courtney. Por algo es mi disco-de-buen-rollo. Algunos apuntes, canción por canción…

01 . Celebrity Skin
El disco arranca con toda la energía un riff de guitarra de Billy Corgan, que colaboró en algunas canciones del disco. La canción que pone nombre al conjunto es una buena muestra de lo que está por venir: guitarras buenrolleras pero contundentes, letras llenas de ironía, superficialidad y esos coros (¡esos coros!) de Melissa Auf der Maur. También fue el primer single del disco.

02. Awful
Una canción supuestamente dedicada a Frances, la hija de Kurt y Courtney, a quién intenta proteger de esos productos artificiales de la industria discográfica. No sé lo bien que le salió la jugada a Courtney, unos años después Frances comentó lo mucho que le gustaba Mariah Carey.

Cambia “take it all” por “fuck them all” y tendrás lo que Courtney cantaba en directo. Fue el tercer single del disco. Como el video oficial tiene desactivada la inserción en páginas web, la pongo en directo. Adoro a Courtney hasta desafinando.

03. Hit So Hard
Una canción sobre orgasmos. Tal cual. Y con pandereta. Vale, sonaja…

04. Malibu
Canción grande donde las haya. EL mejor ejemplo del contraste entre la luminosidad en la música y la oscuridad de las letras. Una adicción, un intento de desintoxicación y el apoyo y planes para cuando todo esté superado. Y todo desde la playa, al anochecer.
Fue el segundo single, y estuvo nóminada a mejor canción rock en los grammys.

05. Reasons to be Beautiful
Unos años antes Courtney dijo que lo único que se operaría sería la campanilla “para hacer mejores mamadas”. Por lo visto cambió de opinión, de nariz, de labios… Courtney siempre ha sido la contradicción personificada, aquella que sigue defiendo que puedes ser fea y completamente respetable… pero, ¿porqué no estar guapa también? Reasons to be Beautiful es eso.
En esta canción se nota claramente la influencia de Melissa en las nuevas canciones. Si escuchas su disco en solitario, te recordará mucho a esta canción.

06. Dying
Uno de los momentos más bonitos del disco, una de “las lentas”. De esas que en directo quedan superpintonas y dan un respiro entre canción y canción sin perder un ápice de intensidad.

07. Use Once and Destroy
De nuevo, la influencia de Melissa asoma las orejas en una de las canciones más potentes del disco. El bajo toma todo el protagonismo. Si Hit so Hard hablaba de los orgasmos, este tema te lleva justo después del orgasmo. Puedes ser feliz o sentirte utilizado… Incluso ambas cosas.

08. Northern Star
Una canción épica, de esas que van despacito, cogiendo forma poco a poco pero sin acelerarse. Creciendo en intensidad, no en potencia. Y con los pelos como escarpias.

09. Boys on the Radio
Cuando Hole tocaron esta canción en el Unplugged de la Mtv (aún se llamaba Sugar Coma), Courtney dijo que era una canción sobre “un gilipollas que estaba perdiendo el pelo”). Ahora, transformada en pop, no sé muy bien de que habla. Mi nterpretación vuelve a la fama, lo superficial y vanal tratado como algo cotidiano.

10. Heaven Tonight
Vuelta a Frances. Ay, que guapa que es mi niña. Ay, que bonica. Así podría resumirse la canción. La guitarra cobra vida como nunca lo había hecho en una canción de Hole. Pop precioso. Y es que no puedo evitarlo… los coros de Melissa, ¡los quiero para mí!

11. Playing your Song
La canción agresiva. La canción enfadada. Aquella en la que Courtney se despacha a gusto con aquellos que hacen de Kurt un negocio sin importar aquello que fue musicalmente. O no, sobre todo aquellos que ven a Kurt como un negocio musical. Probablemente esté hablando de Dave Grohl. El único momento que podría recordar a canciones anteriores.

12. Petals
El disco lo cierra una canción sobre las mentiras y las falsas apariencias. También bastante oscura. Es raro que en un disco con tanta luz se hayan dejado los momentos menos amables para el final. Dicen que es la única canción del disco que nunca llegaron a tocar en directo. A alguien le debe doler…

Y así han pasado 11 años. Y no me he cansado de escucharlo de principio a fin. A por los 22.

Losing a father (or a parent for that matter) is emotionally hard on any child. A certain kind of emptiness is left behind and will stay on through adulthood.

In the case of children whose celebrity fathers died too young, it is doubly hard. They have to put up with the unending public attention. And most often than not, they are pressured to follow in their famous parent’s footsteps just to gain validation. Some pull it off, some don’t. But just the same they are hounded.

Frances Bean Cobain was just 2 years old when her father died allegedly after shooting himself in the mouth. Her mother, Courteney Love read portions of Cobain’s suicide note to the crowd during the memorial and broke down and chastised Cobain.

Now 17, this is what Frances had to say regarding the people who constantly follow her:

These people are fascinated by me, but I haven't done anything. "If you're a big Nirvana fan, a big Hole fan, then I understand why you would want to get to know me, but I'm not my parents. “I get it, I really do, but at the same time it's creepy. People need to wait until I've done something valid with my life." As to what that might be, Frances says she’s considering photography or the noble profession of the professional journalist. “I'm taking my time. But I get asked what I want to do all the time because of my parents and because of the life I live,” she says.

(1940 – 1980 aged 40)

Sean Lennon (who shared the same birthday as his Dad – October 9) was just 5 years old when his father died after being shot by a “loony” named Mark David Chapman.

Hours before his murder, Lennon told RKO Radio that he felt he could go out anywhere in New York City and feel safe. While still a Beatle, Lennon was asked how he might die. Lennon replied:

“I’ll probably be popped off by some loony”. True John. True.

Sean, who’s 34 is already an accomplished musician in his own right. He has recorded several albums, the latest being “Friendly Fire”. He is also touring the States under the group title The Ghost Of A Saber Toothed Tiger with girlfriend Charlotte Kemp Muhl and friend Vincent Gallo during 2009 to promote the Chimera Music MMIX A.D. album.

On his former record label Grand Royal Records :I think I found the only label on the planet who doesn't care who my parents are and what my name is. It's a good feeling to know that I wouldn't have gotten the offer if they wouldn't have liked my songs. That's pretty rare in the music business!

Tiger Lily Hutchence, only child of former INXS frontman Michael Hutchence was just still a one year-old baby when her dad died after hanging himself in his Sydney hotel room. Three years after she would lose her mom, Paula Yates to a heroin overdose. Tiger Lily ,who was reportedly born in a bathroom was described by her father as “exactly just what we ordered”.

To this day, 13 yr old Tiger Lily is still caught between a bitter custody battle between her mom's ex-husband Bob Geldof (who was given custody in 2000) and her paternal grandparents.

(1935 – 1977 aged 42)

Lisa Marie Presley, Elvis’ only child was just 9 years old and was at Graceland at the time of her father’s death in August 16,1977. He was found unresponsive in his bathroom floor. Cause of death was cardiac arrhythmia brought about by combined drug intoxication.

Lisa Marie, now 41 is a singer songwriter who has released 2 albums to date : To Whom It May Concern (2003) and Now What (2005)

—Michael Jackson—

(1958-2009 aged 50)

That fateful June 25th afternoon, Michael Jackson’s children were hysterical following their father’s personal doctor’s frantic calls for help. They were crying and praying at the same time, hoping he’d be Ok. They lost their father that day, due to cardiac arrest. To this day, the autopsy reports have still remained off limits to the press. But it is widely believed that Michael Jackson’s death is linked to his illegal use of the anaesthetic IV med Propofol.

For the first time during their father's memorial service, Michael Joseph Jr. (Prince), Paris-Michael Katherine and Prince Michael II (Blanket) were seen for the first time without their masks on. Katherine Jackson, their paternal grandmother, now has full custody. They are still being home-schooled, are not allowed on the internet, and are rumored to be raised as Jehovah's Witnesses.

Frances Bean Cobain just celebrated her seventeenth birthday on August 18. Growing up as the daughter of grunge rockers Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love, everyone was curious to see how Frances Bean Cobain would turn out and if she would embrace her parent’s grunge look. But Frances Bean follows the beat of her own drum when it comes to fashion and was seen in New York City sporting a new, edgier look.

The teenager showed her alternative fashion sense wearing a printed maxi dress cinched with a brown leather belt with matching brown boots as she shopped in NYC’s East Village this week at vintage boutique Zachary’s Smile. Cobain also show off her newly dyed red hair-do, which gives the teen an edgy, rocker-chic look especially when paired with deep red matte lips and huge retro sunglasses.

Frances Bean has previously said that she was a ‘girlie girl’ and swore she would never dress like her mother, but as she approached adulthood she is embracing a dramatic, cutting edge look.

Kurt Cobain died in 1994 when Frances was just 20 months old. Perhaps Kurt’s constant hair-color rotation inspired Frances Bean to dye her hair red since the Nirvana frontman often changed hair colors including red, black, blond and even green.

In an interview with “Teen Vogue” four years ago, Frances appealed to Nirvana fans to stop putting expectations on her to live up to her famous father. She said: ‘I’m a different person. I don’t want to be titled as Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain’s daughter. I want to be thought of as Frances Cobain.’ She went on to say about her style sense: ‘I prefer when (my mom is) more classy starlet. I don’t really like her hard-metal stuff, or when she doesn’t brush her hair.’ In a more recent interview with Harpers Bazaar last year, Frances demonstrated how different she was from her mother by gushing about Sex and the City, her love of shoes and designer clothing label Prada.

Courtney Love is looking sickly thin these days. The former Hole singer (44) shocked onlookers in Midtown Manhattan with an emaciated frame, suggesting her yo-yo dieting may once again be out of hand.

Apparently Love has had a weight problem since she kicked her drug addiction in 2006.  In 2007, Love joked onstage about an “eating disorder” during a performance, but later insisted she was only kidding.

Kurt Cobain sinh ngaỳ 20/2/1967 tại Hoquiam , sau đó gia đình anh đã chuyển đến Aberdeen , 1 thị trấn cách thành phố Seattle 150km về phía Tây bắc trên bờ biển Thái Bình Dương .

Anh nói :” Tôi là 1 đứa trẻ ốm yếu , thường xuyên bị hành hạ bởi bệnh viêm phế quản nên hay cáu gắt , sống thu mình và xa lánh xã hội “.

Lên 11 tuổi , Cobain đã được nghe và bị cuốn hút bởi ban nhạc Sex Pistols . Đây là ban nhạc đầu tiên chơi thể loại nhạc Punk . Tại Anh , Punk trở thành 1 hiện tượng bùng nổ rộng khắp , nhạc của họ đã thổi được những luồng sinh khí cho những người ốm yếu , tật nguyền , những người ko có được sự yêu thương , che chở và chịu nhiều mất mát trong cuộc sống .
Cobain cùng Krist Novoselic_linh hồn ban nhạc của mình và 1 số bạn bè đã vực dậy 1 trào lưu âm nhạc mới của những ban nhạc Anh quốc như The Dammed , The Raincoast và Joy Division . Nhạc của Nirvana được định hướng từ thể loại nhạc post punk này .Đây là giai đoạn mà dòng nhạc punk xuất hiện những ca khúc hay và những giai điệu lạ .

Vào thời điểm mà Cobain bắt đầu tìm ra phong cách nhạc cho chính mình thì cũng là lúc anh gặp phải những nỗi phiền muộn và bi quan trong cuộc sống Ban nhạc Nirvana được chính thức thành lập năm 1986 , đến năm 1988 , họ đã có băng demo riêng cho mình . Tới năm 1989 , họ đã thực sự tiến bộ với ” Bleach ” đĩa thu thanh đầu tiên của của ban nhạc được thực hiện bởi Sub Pob, một hãng đĩa độc lập. Trong album của họ “Unplugged in New York” phát hành năm 1994, Cobain giới thiệu một ca khúc nằm trong đĩa nhạc “Bleach”, ca khúc này mang phong cách nhạc đặc trưng của Nirvana: nhấm nhẳng méo mó. Nirvana đã ký hợp đồng với hãng đĩa Geffen, một hãng đĩa lớn và họ là ban nhạc không chính thống đầu tiên làm được việc đó. Có lần Cobain đã thú nhận rằng :” Nếu 1 ngôi sao ca nhạc rock có tới 101 cách sống , tôi vẫn có lối sống của riêng mình .” Đời sống mệt mỏi vì tính thương mại của âm nhạc và việc kiếm tiền dễ dàng đã càng làm tăng thêm sự nghiện ngập của Cobain . Ở nơi sâu tận đáy lòng và trong tâm trí của Cobain , những nỗi đau dường như càng tăng thêm , ma tuý đã ko giúp anh nguôi ngoai đi mà nó lại chính là nguyên nhân của những nỗi bất bình và cáu giận âm ỉ , anh đã chịu đựng nó như 1 vết thương dai dẳng , tàn phá suốt cuộc đời . Các ca khúc của CObain được thống nhất qua các tính chất mạnh mẽ , dữ dội như kêu gào với những ca khúc sắc sảo tưởng chừng trong âm nhạc cũng ko có giây phút thảnh thơi . Hơn bao giờ hết , sự mỉa mai của Cobain nhằm vào cuộc sống qua những sáng tác đang dần trở thành 1 con quái vật ko thể kiểm soát nổi . Những âm thanh dữ dội , khó nghe đến chói tai , những đoạn guitar trầm đục đặc trưng kết hợp với lối hát khi thì la hét om sòm , lúc lại rền rĩ , nó toát lên 1 tính chất giận dữ , ầm ĩ chính là nhạc của Nirvana . nhưng tất cả những cái đó lại cuốn hút được giới trẻ và lớp người bất mãn . Cobain đã gây nên 1 chấn động khi cho ra đời ca khúc ” Polly ” .

Sau đó ít lâu , Cobain kêu gọi các fan của mình bằng đôi dòng chú thích trên bìa 1 album rằng :” Nếu bạn là 1 người ko quý trọng phụ nữ và những người da đen , ko thông cảm với những kẻ đồng tính luyến ái thì xin hãy để cho họ và chúng tôi được yên “. Lời kêu gọi của Cobain vô giá trị và cũng như bao nghệ sĩ khác , qua 1 đêm , Cobain chợt nhận ra rằng anh chỉ là 1 người có được chút ít quyền lực .

Album ” Nevermind ” đã mang về cho Cobain 50 triệu đô la , nhưng cuộc sống của Cobain giờ đây đã hoàn toàn trở nên hỗn độn . Ngày 22/2/1992 , anh đã tới Hawai và cưới Courtney Love , trụ cột của nhóm Hole . Sau đó ít lâu , Nirvana phát hành ” Insecticide ” , 1 đĩa nhạc tổng hợp qua nhiều sáng tác . Tháng 8 năm đó , Cobain đã phải vào viện để điều trị vì ma tuý và chính lúc này , bé Frances Bean Cobain ra đời . Vào năm 1993 , album ” InUtero ” phát hành và chiếm ngay vị trí số 1 . Nirvana lên đường cho 1 chuyến lưu diễn từ thiện và chuẩn bị thu thanh , ghi hình cho buổi biểu diễn ” Unplugged ” của họ trên MTV , buổi biểu diễn đã thuyết phục được cả những khán thính giả trước đây coi thường Cobain như 1 kẻ bất tài gặp may . Vào mùa Đông cuối năm 1993 , Nirvana bắt đầu chuyến lưu diễn khắp Châu Âu . Sau hơn 20 buổi biểu diễn , cổ họng của Cobain có vấn đề và lịch trình diễn đã bị gián đoạn . Ngày 4/3/1994 , Cobain được đưa vào bệnh viện cấp cứu trong tình trạng hôn mê , sau đó Cobain trở về Settle .

Vào cuối tháng 3/1994 , chìm trong hố sâu tuyệt vọng , Cobain đồng ý đi điều trị 1 lần nữa và tại nơi đây , những người thân và bạn bè đã cùng anh vật lộn chống lại những cơn nghiện . Ngày 8/4 , Cobain đã tự nhốt mình trong căn phòng sau biệt thự của mình rồi kê súng vào miệng _ bum ! ngay sáng hđó , hàng triệu người hâm mộ đã có mặt tại nơi Cobain tự vẫn . Với các fan trẻ tuổi thì ko gì có thể làm dịu bớt nỗi đau buồn của họ , ở Mỹ và Úc , 1 số fan quá khích đã tự tử theo .

Cái chết của Joplin , Marrison , Hendrix…là thảm trạng của 1 thế hệ rock’n'roll do lạm dụng vô đọ ko rượu thì ma tuý hoặc cả 2 . Nhưng còn cái chết của Cobain hoàn toàn do sự mất mát . Thiếu thốn tình cảm suốt cả 1 đời , trong tâm hồn Cobain hầu như ko có được sự yêu thương , và che chở của cha mẹ . Cobain có lòng tự trọng , có cuộc sống độc lập , tự lo toan cho tương lai và sức khoẻ ngay từ nhỏ . Nhưng Cobain đã tự ti , mặc cảm khi biết rằng bọn trẻ hâm mộ anh đã nhận ra 1 sự thật quá rõ về thần tượng của chúng . Cobain giống như họ và họ cũng giống như Cobain , đều cảm thấy bị lừa dối bới những gì mà Cobain đã làm .

Ttrước khi tự sát , những lúc ngồi 1 mình trong tâm trạng rối bời , bấn loạn hay minh mẫn , mong được cảm thông hay buồn vô vọng , Cobain đã lần lượt ghi lại hầu như đầy đủ mọi sự kiện trong cuộc sống , từ những niềm vui cho dến nỗi buồn của anh . Phải chăng Cobain đã tự dằn vặt mình khi viết :” Bạn là người dễ dàng vượt qua mọi rắc rối , vậy hãy thoát ra khỏi điều rắc rối mà chính bạn đang mắc phải “.

Grunge – đầm lầy hớp nhúa của những bóp méo đến cực đoan, nó vĩ đại chẳng kém gì Heavy Metal hay Punk. Phần lyric của nó thì sao nhỉ ??? Chẳng khác gì một đứa trẻ khóc gào khi giận dữ vì bị bỏ rơi. Grunge ra đời bởi sự đau đớn của cả một thế hệ khác hẳn với quang cảnh của rock LA trước nó vốn đang tung hoành trên cái thứ tự cao tự đại – thuyết duy ngã độc tôn.

Được đặt nền móng đầu tiên vào giữa những năm 80 tại một vùng nhỏ bé Seattle, Grunge đã trở nên vô cùng lớn mạnh trên khắp thế giới vào năm 1991 với “Nevermind” của Nirvana. Nó đã gây ảnh hưởng trên dủ mọi lĩnh vực từ thời trang, âm nhạc và thậm chí cả phim ảnh với những bộ phim như: Singles, Sacker, Reality Bite…Nhưng sau đó ??? Kurt chết, Courtney nhảy vào Hollywood còn Pearl Jam và những ban khác gần như biến mất… Britpop nắm ngay lấy chỗ đứng này…

Nhưng Grunge, đặc biệt là thứ âm nhạc của Kurt Cobain ko chết. Người ta nói rằng, ngay cả một ca khúc Nu metal hiện nay như “My Way” của Limp Bizkit cũng theo một cái “sơ đồ” đã được thiết lập trong “Smells like teen spirit”. Rồi mỗi tháng trên các tạp chí rock lại thấy có một ban mới tuyên bố họ đã chịu ảnh hưởng từ Nirvana và từ Kurt. Cái cần nhấn mạnh trong âm nhạc của Nirvana đó là thái độ Anti-guitarhero của Kurt, nó đã làm thay đổi nhận thức và thái độ của những kẻ chơi guitar trong mọi thể loại. Tại sao vậy ???

Theo Kurt thì kẻ gieo mầm đầu tiên cho Grunge là Melvins – Một trong những nhóm mà anh rất ưa thích. Được thành lập từ năm 1985, Melvins có những âm thanh bị ảnh hưởng từ tay guitar Tony Tommi của Black Sabbath. Đến lượt mình, Kurt đã lấy những chất liệu từ Melvins và kết hợp với những giai điệu khôn ngoan cùng sự nhạy cảm của mình, chúng làm cho Nirvana trở thành ban nhạc vĩ đại nhất vào đầu những năm 90. Nhưng Grunge có thể đã ra đời từ trước Melvins bởi một ban tên là Green River, nó được thành lập ngay từ năm1983. Tại thời điểm này Green River bị coi là một nhóm Post-Punk với các thành viên lúc đó là Mark Arm và Steve Turner (sau này lập nên Mud Honey), Jeff Ament và Stone Gossard (Pearl Jam). Nhóm đã hợp nhất Garage của những năm 80, Heavy Metal của những năm 70 và cả New Wave.

Năm 1983, Kurt chỉ 16 tuổi và đã chơi guitar được 2 năm. Nhưng không như những kẻ đồng trang lứa , Cobain không bao giờ thích sự phù phép chạy ngón tít mù trên cây guitar hay cố ganh đua để trở thành 1 thần đồng guitar. Kurt có cây guitar đầu tiên năm 14 tuổi (1981 – cùng thời gian Metallica được thành lập) “Ngay khi có cây guitar, tôi đã bị nó ám ảnh.” Kurt đã có một vài bài bài học về đàn nhưng sau 1 tháng thì Kurt cảm thấy chán ngấy khi cứ phải chơi đi chơi lại “Black in Black” của AC/DC. Kurt cho rằng những hợp âm E, D, A…đã là rất tốt để chơi nhạc.

Vào năm 1987, Grunge đã bắt đầu tạo nên vóc dáng đầu tiên của mình: Soundgarden đã phát hành đĩa EP đầu tiên “Screaming Life”, Alice In Chains và Tad đã được thành lập. Và Kurt với tay bass Krist Novoselic lập nên Nirvana. 12 tháng sau single đầu tiên của nhóm ra đời: “Love Buzz” nó thật thích hợp để tạo nên những tiếng “vo ve” đầu tiên trong bối cảnh âm nhạc Underground tại Seattle. Album đầu tiên của Nirvana “Bleach” được thu âm với chỉ 600$ đã đâm những nhánh đầu tiên cho nhóm.

Album debut của Nirvana có thứ âm thanh quá giống với những nhóm cùng thời là Mudhoney và Tad, sự đặc quánh quá cực đoan khác hẳn với những gì mà Nirvana cho ra đời sau này. Người ta cho rằng trong album này Kurt đã cố tình gạt đi cái cảm tính của mình để phù hợp với sự ám ảnh vẫn còn từ Metal ở những năm 70. Một phần hai số bài hát của “Nevermind” sau này đã được viết trong thời gian của “Bleach” nhưng đã không được đưa vào album tại ngay thời điểm đó.

Sau khi lưu diễn tay guitar Jason Everman đã rời bỏ nhóm và sang đầu quân cho Soundgarden “Anh ta quá heavy và không chậm rãi như chúng tôi.” Cobain tiếp tục tạo ra những giai điệu mà anh thích thú, kết hợp lại tất cả những gì mà mình bị ảnh hưởng: từ Black Sabbath, The Pixies và Black Flag, rồi thêm vào đó một chút Indie và New Wave của Raincoats, The Vaselines & The Meat Puppets è Những âm thanh của Nirvana. Khi tay trống Chad Channing đi theo Everman rời khỏi ban nhạc và Dave Grohl vào thế chỗ. Họ đã hoàn tất bộ 3 đầy sức công phá của mình, tạo nên thứ âm thanh đặc trưng với phần mở đầu ề à chậm rãi rồi đến chorus thì bật tung lên, lật nhào tất cả với những âm thanh méo mó,… điển hình là “Smell”

Tuy nhiên Nirvana không bao giờ cho rằng họ tạo nên và nghĩ ra tất cả thứ âm nhạc của mình. Kurt luôn nói với các nhà báo rằng anh đã lấy cắp ý tưởng từ The Pixies, còn Dave Grohl cũng cho rằng họ có cái gì đó từ War Pig của Black Sabbath.

Trong khi Nirvana nỗ lực luyện tập 5 ngày một tuần, cố gắng mang tất cả sinh khí của mình vào âm nhạc…Bóng dáng của họ đã lờ mờ rõ nét hơn. Nirvana tham gia vào những tour diễn trong nước và quốc tế đầu tiên. Họ ký hợp đồng với Geffen sau lời giới thiệu của Thurston Moore của Sonic Youth. Nirvana phát hành “Nevermind” – Album được nhắc đến nhiều nhất trong năm và cũng trong cả thập kỷ, nó cùng với “Ten” của Pearl Jam và “Bad Motorfinger” của Soundgarden mang Grunge lên đến đỉnh cao nhất vào năm 1991.

Nhưng cái vĩ đại hơn mà Kurt làm được là nắm bắt lấy sự sáng tạo mới trong cách chơi guitar. Giới trẻ đã được anh truyền cho một cách nhìn mới về âm nhạc mà người ta gọi nó là: “Less-is-More” tạm dịch là: ít nhưng hiệu quả. Tạo nên âm nhạc thực sự từ những bài học guitar phóng đãng mau quên, từ những cây guitar đáng cho vào cửa hàng đồng nát và từ cả những cái pedal âm ly xơ xác từ những năm 70.

Thật mỉa mai cho những cây guitar khủng long với đủ ngón nghề và đủ thứ kỹ xảo. Kurt bất ngờ xuất hiện, thật xoàng xĩnh…nhưng lại khiến mọi tay guitar thời điểm đó phải ganh đua, mọi tạp chí Guitar đều phải hỏi thăm và ca ngợi. Nhưng Kurt luôn tự phủ nhận bản thân khi được hỏi về cách chơi đàn của mình, anh nói với tạp chí Guitar World: “Tôi chỉ đơn thuần chơi theo giai điệu, nhiều lúc tôi còn không theo kịp các giai điệu của ca khúc…nhưng mọi người vẫn thông cảm cho tôi về điều này.”
Sau sự cuồng loạn và kích động của “Nevermind” Nirvana và đặc biệt là Kurt dường như trở nên lo lắng vì khoảng cách của bản thân họ và các sáng tác, chúng đường như được chải chuốt quá bóng mượt sau khi được nhà sản xuất mix. Kurt tâm sự trước khi bắt tay vào album thứ 3 rằng có lúc anh cảm thấy rất chán ghét ban nhạc và thứ âm nhạc đang phải tạo ra. Nirvana quyết định quay trở lại với cái gốc rễ Punk của mình, Kurt mời Steve Albini tham gia sản xuất (đây là người đã sản xuất ra album mà Kurt thích nhất “Surfer Rosa” cho nhóm The Pixies).

Trong “In Utero” Albini đã cố gắng tước bỏ những thứ bị cho là gần giống với những ban khác, kéo sự chú ý tới phần ca từ đau đớn tuyệt vọng của Kurt, mài sắc khả năng viết nhạc để có những giai điệu mạch lạc. Không chau chuốt trong cách chơi guitar, chỉ đơn thuần là những âm thanh từ chiếc Fender rẻ tiền với những âm thanh méo mó. Kurt có thể không có một điềm đam mê mãnh liệt sống chết cùng cây guitar, nhưng lại có thể làm nên những hiệu quả khiến người khác phải đam mê sống chết. Thử kiểm tra lại “Scentless Apprentice”- những âm thanh gầm gừ kéo dọc cần đàn, “Radio Friendly Unit Shifter”- dường như là sự kéo lê móng trên dọc dây đàn cùng với những âm thanh nhiễu chói tai hay đơn giản chỉ là những điệp khúc sâu trong “Heart Shaped Box”…

Sau khi phát hành “In Utero” Nirvana đã được mời chơi Unplugged một buổi cho MTV. Kurt không khoái điều này lắm, không muốn trở thành một ngôi sao trong ánh đèn sân khấu nên Nirvana đã mời Meat Puppets cùng diễn. “Unplugged in NY” là một buổi diễn miễn cưỡng của Kurt với một số bản cover lại các ca khúc từ những nhóm thần tượng của mình (đặc biệt nổi bật là bản “Where did u sleep last night” của Leadbelly), Kurt luôn có sự coi trọng đối với những nhóm mà mình tôn sùng.

Nhưng Nirvana đã chìm vào một khoảng thời gian vay mượn, sự ham mê heroin của Kurt đã bắt đầu thay đổi bộ mặt trên sân khấu của nhóm. Một trong những lần phỏng vấn cuối cùng, Kurt đã nói bóng gió rằng ban nhạc có thể sẽ không tiếp tục mãi được: “Tôi rất tự hào vì những gì chúng tôi đã làm được, nhưng cũng chẳng biết sẽ tiếp tục được bao lâu với cái phong cách này. Tôi có rất nhiều ý tưởng và tham vọng nhưng nó lại không nằm trong cái khái niệm lớn về Grunge mà mọi người ép cho ban nhạc từ trước tới nay. Chúng tôi đang mệt mỏi khi bị gắn cho cái nhãn mác quá lớn, bạn có thể hình dung sự ngột ngạt này chứ ???”

Thực vậy, với một ban nhạc yêu thích cả Beatles, Bay City Roller, The Knack và thậm chí cả Abba cũng như yêu Sonic Youth, The Pixies và Black Flag…thì cái phù hiệu Grunge sẽ ngày càng làm ban thêm mệt mỏi và vướng víu.

Mặc dù chết yểu vào năm 1994, nhưng cái phong cách mà Kurt tự tay tạo nên với chiếc guitar cũ kỹ đã mớm cho vô số thanh niên cái khát khao và niềm tin rằng họ cũng có thể chơi guitar. Không quan trọng dù cho bạn chơi guitar ở cấp độ khả năng nào, cũng chẳng cần quan tâm xem bạn có sở hữu một cây Les Paul xịn hay không. Trước khi có Kurt, người ta thường bị ám ảnh những âm thanh guitar với những lâu đài thời trung cổ, những con rồng, những chương sử thi hoành tráng…nhưng giờ đây nó có thể là những bế tắc tuyệt vọng của một thế hệ và là bất cứ thứ gì mà bạn phải trải qua.

Có vô số tay guitar Alternative nói rằng họ chơi đàn sau khi nghe nhạc và tập chơi nhạc của Nirvana: Alex Troup (For Crashland), Rod Jones (Idle Wild), Mark Greaney (JJ72), Som (My Vitriol)…tất cả đều bắt đầu với những “Smell”, “About”… Người ta có thể không bao giờ muốn sự thiếu vắng những tay so lo kỹ thuật, nhưng không có Kurt, rất nhiều cây guitar hiện nay sẽ không bao giờ cầm đến cây đàn guitar. Từ Everclear tới Silverchair, Bush tới Placebo…

“Tôi đến với ma túy vào một ngày, khi cơn đau bụng lên tới đỉnh điểm. Trước đó, tôi đã chịu đựng cơn đau mãn tính khoảng 5 năm, có những lúc vật vã, chỉ muốn kết liễu đời mình cho xong”, đó là một đoạn trích trong cuốn nhật ký của thủ lĩnh ban nhạc Nirvana.

Như vậy, Kurt dây vào ma túy không phải vì học đòi đám bạn xấu hoặc muốn thể hiện sự nổi loạn của mình. Nhiều đoạn trong cuốn nhật ký cho thấy, anh rất hối tiếc đã sử dụng bột trắng trong tình trạng không tỉnh táo, để rồi sau này không thể dứt bỏ được.

Trong một bức thư chưa kịp gửi, Cobain tâm sự với bạn: “Cậu biết đấy, tôi bây giờ trở thành nô lệ của heroin rồi. Đã đến lúc tôi cần một trung tâm cai nghiện nào đó giúp thoát khỏi sự cám dỗ của nó”. Trong một lá thư khác, viết cho khán giả hâm mộ, ca sĩ mỉa mai về chuyện báo chí đồn đại rằng anh muốn tự tử và khẳng định, sẽ chiến đấu chống lại sức hút của ma túy: “Tôi bị đau bụng và đành dùng cần sa để giải cứu trong chốc lát thay cho thuốc giảm đau, nhưng đúng là nó chỉ đem lại phiền toái mà thôi. Tuy nhiên, tôi sẽ không để mất mạng vì đồ của nợ này”. Dù rất quyết tâm, Kurt vẫn buộc phải đầu hàng trước chất kích thích nguy hiểm. Trước khi qua đời vài ngày, anh đã trút nỗi lòng mình trên trang giấy: “Khi có người cảnh báo tôi rằng chất bột trắng có ma lực ghê gớm, tôi đã cười vào mũi họ, nhưng bây giờ, khi đã hiểu ra thì quá muộn rồi”.

Cobain, quá tuyệt vọng trước bi kịch của cuộc đời, nào là ma túy, nào là cô vợ hư hỏng, đã tìm đến cái chết ở tuổi 27 tại căn nhà ở Seattle.Một cái kết đáng buồn….

The ashes of Pacific Northwest rock legend Kurt Cobain aren’t exactly something that a thief could easily flip for a big profit on eBay. So why would someone swipe the heart-shaped handbag containing the Gen-X idol’s remains from his widow’s Hollywood home?

Courtney Love told authorities that the ashes were recently stolen from a secret hiding place in a wardrobe in her home. According to Britain’s The Guardian, Love now claims to be suicidal as a result of the theft. “I can’t believe anyone would take Kurt’s ashes from me,” she said. “If I don’t get them back I don’t know what I’ll do.”

Cobain, lead singer of the seminal grunge band Nirvana, committed suicide at his Seattle home in 1994. Most of his ashes were originally scattered at a New York Buddhist temple and in the Wishkah River near his boyhood hometown of Aberdeen in Washington. However, Love says she kept some for herself, hidden away in a location that was a closely guarded secret until now. According to The Guardian, Love believes the ashes were taken by an acquaintance.

Not only are the last few years possibly the most successful of his career even though he has been gone for a few years, but there are so many young Kurt Cobain and Nirvana fans around today, fans that were were probably very young or not even born yet when Kurt was alive.

So you could say that he lives on.

Frances Bean Cobain at the “Twilight” LA Premiere at Mann’s Village Theater in Westwood, CA. Apparently, she had to wait a bit to get inside because everyone thought she was just another teenager who wanted to get in. She went up and told a security guard that she was Frances Bean Cobain and she was let inside right away.

Courtney Love fans were concerned last weekend when the singer-actress-Cobain widow in a seemingly manic state, wrote 60 posts on her Myspace blog in just two days.

Love, who has battled with drug problems and depression over the years, refuted the notion that she was suicidal by – what else? – blogging again yesterday:

“”no i am not suicidal, occasionally very occasioanly like all of us i get depressed, and that was over a year ago and i had a mini little depression attack well big one… i dont know quite why it happened but i find that mediciation is not the answer to this”

Love went on to say she is going to put a stop to her incessant blogging because it has a negative effect on her daughter, 16-year-old Frances Bean Cobain.

This really puts a new perspective on embarrassing mothers. I used to get upset at my mom for teasing me in front of my friends. I am now thanking my lucky stars that she never got high and blogged.

Frances Bean (the only child of Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain), had a death themed 16th birthday party.  Guests were required to wear red and black and compete in the “Who looks most dead” contest. 

Supposedly the theme was “Death to Childhood”, but does this strike anyone else as slightly inappropriate and rather creepy??

Proving to stray from the norm Frances Bean, daughter of Courtney Love, has held a ’suicide’ themed 16th birthday party. Invitees were told to dress in red and black to celebrate the death of childhood, and there were prizes for who could look the most ‘dead’.

This comes as quite a shock as Frances’ father is the late Kurt Cobain. Cobain, who was the lead singer of heavy metal band, Nirvana,  comitted suicide when Frances was an infant.

However, Frances has proven to be particularly level-headed and has aspirations of becoming a journalist.

Today, after two months reading I was done reading the biography of Kurt Cobain.

“If you read, you will judge”

I truly loved and hated this book. I can not put all of my thoughts and feelings down in words. For some reason this book really touched me emotionally. if it weren’t for the fact that I finished reading the book in a public place I think I would have cried.

 The book in my opinion will change your view of Kurt, no matter if you are a fan or not. I started reading this book not because I was a fan, I never liked Nirvana before I read this book, but I knew about Kurt Cobain and I was curious about how he lived, how he was thinking and what lead him down the path he went.

Like most people I thought from the start that Courtney Love was the source to his drug abuse that led to his death or that she was the one who killed him. Based on the book I am not sure anymore. She seemed to stay sober longer then him, and have more control then him, even thought they often escaped from this world together by shooting heroine.

It’s clearly to everyone that he was a simple man but yet so complicated, he was so cheerful but also in so much pain.

I think it’s impossible to say this in any way without sounding like a teeny fan of Nirvana, but still during this book I realized that to much of me found it self in Kurt and his thoughts and way of thinking. Things that he wrote in his journal(notebooks) could have been copied from my diary. Parts of my diary that was written long time before I read this book or even had heard about him and that partly freaks me out.

On her blog, Courtney Love claims she has the proof of Ryan Adams’ theft of her money:

“There were all the bills for Ryan Adams worst record and one of the worst records I can think of in rock and roll history ironically called Rock and Roll and it was paid for by ME and mostly by my child. Here on Amex 28 is the entire invoice for Ryan – your ENTIRE album and meals and drugs and hotels and outboard gear and wasted fabulous guitars STRAIGHT OUT OF FRANCES’ TRUST FUND. Ryan you YOU spent 858,000 dollars on this record of MY DAUGHTERS MONEY. So what’s your paying me back plan?”

Ryan’s response to all this? On his blog, he responds:

“I’ve been dealing with the truth that I have at times been a bad example and/or glorified self destructive behavior. This was never intentional, but rather a consequence of leading a public life in plain sight and never expecting any sort of preferential treatment, isolation or protection, I’ve realized and accepted that if people decide to dislike me, they’re going to find reasons to justify disliking me. There’s nothing I can do about that. That said, it still does pain me to be accused of fictional crimes against innocents or to be implicated in romantic gossip involving the possibly reality-challenged–however unreliable the source or outlandish the accusations. In the end, however, I know that I have never done or even meant anyone any harm.”

Wow. That was long-winded. We went from rant post to babble post. Remember the days when rock stars were wary of telling the press their personal troubles. Now they have blogs and they don’t feel so inhibited.
