Abbiamo cominciato settimana scorsa una lunga e dolorosa discesa negli inferi delle produzione cinematografiche a soggetto supereroistico. Insomma, i film brutti tratti dai fumetti. Se volete scoprire quanto si può cadere in basso, continuate a leggere e puppatevi un’escalation di terrore dalla posizione numero 12 alla 10. Oddio che ansia.

12 The Punisher, Jonathan Hensleigh, 2004

Qualcuno si ricorda il vecchio film sul Punitore con Dolph Lundgren senza manco il teschio sulla maglia? Dai, quello che in italiano non si sa per quale motivo è uscito con il titolo Il Vendicatore… C’è anche una sequenza dove si vede un telegiornale, un anchorman che parla di tale Vendicatore e dietro di lui c’è una scritta gigante: Punisher… No, per dire l’accurataggine con cui era fatto… Eh? Ve lo ricordate? Eh? Era brutto… Ma questo è peggio. Si prende un altro biondo (Thomas Jane) lo si tinge di nero, gli si mette un teschio sul vestito (almeno quello…) e poi si fa di tutto per rovinare la saga Bentornato, Frank, quella di Ennis e Dillon. E tra un pezzo dei Nickelback e uno del chitarrista degli Evanescence, ce la si fa alla grande. Ad uscirne peggio di tutti è proprio il Punitore, qui snaturato in ogni sua caratteristica, soprattutto – diciamo così – “psicologica”. John Travolta, nella parte del cattivo, è semplicemente deprimente. Per la cronaca l’ultimo film dedicato al personaggio, The Punisher War Zone, massacrato ovunque dalla critica e da noi uscito direttamente in dvd, non è per niente male. Cioè, a confronto sembra un film di Orson Welles e a questo ci straspezza la schiena. Non a caso si è dovuti ripartire da zero… Per farvi capire quante cazzate si possono dire in un film, vediamo come ce li cava a spiegare tutto quello che muove Frank Castle nella sua vendetta cieca e senza fine in soli 32 fottutissimi secondi.

11 X-Men le origini – Wolverine, Gavin Hood, 2009

Diciamolo subito, hanno fatto un brutto casino con Deadpool. Un bruttissimo casino. Non è nemmeno un film discreto in cui han fatto un bruttissimo casino con Deadpool, oppure un film che raggiunge a mala pena la sufficenza in cui han fatto un bruttissimo casino con Deadpool, no, è un grosso film di merda in cui han fatto un bruttissimo casino con Deadpool. E dire che dietro c’è la penna del romanziere/sceneggiatore de la 25esima ora di Spike Lee. Al famoso monologo di Norton davanti lo specchio andrebbe aggiunto “Fanculo te! Sceneggiatore, produttore, regista di Hollywood che quando si ritrova ad dover fare un film sui Super Eroi, invece di attingere da quelle migliaia di ottime storie, si inventa cazzate dal nulla, rovinandomi la giornata ed il mio megasecchio di popcorn”

Perchè diamine Deadpool assomiglia a Voldemort sotto steroidi con un giochino della settimana enigmistica sul petto? Perchè?

10 The Spirit, Frank Miller, 2008

La totale e definitiva perdita di credibilità per un uomo che per un certo periodo è stato nei nostri cuori… come dire: la conferma della fine di Frank Miller passa sicuramente attraverso questo film. Dopo essere stato incoronato dal grande Will Eisner come suo successore e custode dei segreti della non arte, Miller è riuscito a scontentare chiunque facendo trasparire per altro anche una certa cattiva fede. In barba a qualsiasi rispetto per la fonte originale, al personaggio The Spirit viene applicato in laboratorio il trattamento Sin City (vi ricordate? Si può fare lo stesso anche a Charlie Brown… ) . Il risultato si commenta da solo. Se già il passaggio da carta stampata a grande schermo era stata non priva di difetti per Marv e compagni, figuriamoci in questo caso. Dopo dieci minuti passa la voglia di vivere anche al più entusiasta degli spettatori e l’idea di una possibile uscita in sala di Sin City 2 e Sin City 3 mette paura. Deligato… Fortunatamente non è piaciuto praticamente a nessuno per cui forse Frank Miller per un po’ la smetterà di essere definito un Autore visionario. Ma ne dubito.

The Story: As always, Miller makes his themes (in this case, the title “Field Test”) do double duty. Stephanie Brown is field testing her new high-tech Batgirl costume. Barbara Gordon is helping monitor the suit while giving advice, but when she has to deal with something, Batgirl herself is field tested against someone well out of her league.

What’s Good: If there’s one issue that can vouch for Miller’s writing, it’s Batgirl #4. The plotting and thematic ideas are always tight, but my hat remains off on his character work. His characters are just fun to follow. The back and forth between Barbara and Stephanie is solid, as Miller packs his dialogue with personality. Stephanie’s running self-deprecation could get tiresome in another character, but when put together with her natural exuberance and fun, it works, with lines like “And this Batgirl doesn’t sing – not in front of people anyway” and “I’m almost fifty percent sure nothing could go wrong.” I’m also waiting to see where this romantic tension between Batgirl and the young detective is going to go.

Art team has changed a bit. Tim Levins has replaced Scott and Hope in the driver seat with Lee Garbett. The art is clear, the expressions tell the story and the poses are more natural. The layouts also seem to be evolving positively. The final battle page between Batgirl and the villain is a funny and well-told stack of panels.

What’s Not So Good: The superhero skeleton of the story is nothing original. Batgirl’s encounter with this super-villainess is pretty forgettable, but I’m wondering if the search for something truly field-expanding is what Batgirl readers are looking for when they buy this book. Would something truly original to the field (think the teen angst of Lee/Ditko Spiderman, the gritty noir of Miller’s Daredevil or the soap opera of Claremont’s X-Men) fit within a book whose focus is the fun of watching a flighty, occasionally quixotic teenager turn herself into a real superhero? But if ground-breaking work is not in Batgirl’s future, will the series survive? Sales estimates for issue #3 from Diamond are around 37,000, which is pretty respectable for a new book, so Michael Siglain has some flex before making any serious decisions, but Miller has got some work ahead of him to convince readers that Stephanie Brown matters, without losing the fun of what makes her great.

Conclusion: Batgirl is an entertaining book and very accessible to the new reader. This is what mainstream comics do well. But I hope that Batgirl does not get lost behind a lot of other books that are also delivering mainstream stories.

Peanuts + Frank Miller = sheer unadulterated genius. That is all.

THE SPIRIT é um filme complicado porque levanta muitos problemas. Não porque tenha preocupações estéticas, provocativas, ou algo mais nobre.

Simplesmente porque finalmente é dirigido por um autor de gibis cultuado, que sempre foi crítico com as intervenções de produtores no resultado final das transposições de suas obras para o cinema.

Como se sabe Frank Miller é um dos pais da idéia de que super-heróis são seres humanos e, como tais, vivem conflitos existenciais que justificam suas audaciosas missões no mundo comum. Isto por si só abre todo um gênero de obras que infestam as grandes produções de Hollywood.

Mas o que há de errado com este herói – THE SPIRIT – que volta do mundo dos mortos para combater um vilão em busca da imortalidade a qualquer preço ?

Nada, exceto que o seu ego queira dar um espetáculo moralizador. Suprema contradição. Afinal, Frank Miller tem de tocar estas feridas para dar o seu espetáculo vazio.

CON UNA HISTORIA NUEVA DE MILLER

”Sin City 2” comenzará a rodarse a finales de 2010

Sin City 2 va tomando cuerpo. Después de numerosos retrasos, que han demorado esta secuela varios años, parece que ya está todo listo y la cinta comenzará a rodarse a finales de 2010 con la intención de estar en los cines el año siguiente.

Fue el productor Stephen L’Heureux el que reveló que la produción de la secuela comenzará en la segunda mitad del próximo año y que el guión estará basado no en una de las novelas gráficas sino en una historia original escrita por Frank Miller, que volverá a co-dirigir la cinta junto a Robert Rodríguez.

“Estamos trabajando en ello, es un trabajo colaborar con alguién como Frank”, aseguró el productor que además confirmó el salto a la gran pantalla de otra de las historias de Miller, Hard Boiled. Se trata de un comic ultra violento sobre un recaudador de impuestos que descubre que es un robot y, en su afán de encontrar respuestas, dejará un reguero de cadáveres a su paso.

Miller dirigirá esta adaptación que tendrá que esperar todavía bastante, ya que la prioridad es Sin City 2 y, según señaló L’Heureux también la tercera parte en la que ya están pensando. En todo caso, y con posibles fichajes de relumbrón como Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp o el español Antonio Banderas en el horizonte, Sin City 2 estará en los cines a finales de 2011.

Si bien la cinta Sin City 2 es un hecho de que se va a realizar, no hay todavía ningún avance definitivo. Lo más reciente es la afirmación hecha por Robert Rodriguez, en el sentido de que la filmación estará iniciando en la segunda mitad del 2010, aunque aún no hay una fecha definida. De ser así, podemos esperar la cinta para el segundo trimestre del 2011, si es que todo sale bien.

WASHINGTON(AFP) — The decomposed bodies of six women were found in the Cleveland, Ohio home of a convicted rapist who was arrested Saturday, the coroner conducting the autopsies said.

“There is a total of six unidentified women,” Cuyahoga County coroner Frank Miller told AFP, saying most of the victims found at the home of registered sex offender Anthony Sowell, 50, appeared to have been strangled.

Police earlier confirmed that three bodies were found at the home, and that the bodies of three more victims were believed to have been discovered.

Released in 2005 after spending years in prison for a 1989 rape, Sowell was arrested in his Cleveland neighborhood after a local resident recognized him and notified police.

He had been walking down a street and did not resist arrest, police said.

The first two bodies were found Thursday when a SWAT team entered the house with a search warrant, police chief Michael McGrath told reporters in a briefing aired by local media.

Further searches of the property led to the discovery of four more bodies for a total of six — five in the home and one buried in a grave in the yard, Miller said.

“They were badly decomposed bodies,” Miller added. Police, citing the coroner, earlier said some of the bodies may have been in the home up to six months.

While the coroner continued tests to try and establish the victims’ identities, Cleveland police initiated a search of missing person records from June 2005, when Sowell was released after serving a 15-year prison term for rape.

Police asked members of the community who may have loved ones missing to come forward with photographs of the relatives in a bid to help the identification process.

Department Lieutenant Thomas Stacho said police searched Sowell’s home because he was named as a suspect in a rape and assault case.

“It was such a disgusting sight” that homicide detectives discouraged Stacho from going into the house, he told CNN.

“I can tell you I stood outside the home for about an hour yesterday, and the stench from inside was overwhelming.”

The United States has experienced several gruesome multiple murders in recent months, including a case in September in which a Florida man was charged with slaying his wife and five small children.

Also in September, police arrested an alleged serial killer in Milwaukee, Wisconsin whose DNA was found on nine women murdered over a 21-year period, eight of them prostitutes.

So, everyone knows that I like to draw here and there.  Well, for a great deal of my life, maybe even a little bit inside now, I wanted to be a comic book illustrator.  I’ve always been a HUGE fan of the medium (I have a somewhat massive collection from the better part of the last two decades) and I’ve always especially been in love with the art!  Comic books are definitely what first gave me a love for drawing.  I would look for the name (and still do) of the guy doing the pencils of an issue just as critically as the title of the story.  I love Jim Lee, Frank Quitely, Frank Miller, Alex Ross, Michael Turner, just to name a few.   I would always copy my favorite images from my comics and sign them and show them off to my family when I was small.  I thought they would be a big deal when I was actually drawing those same characters for DC or Marvel someday in the future!  Even if you don’t consider this stuff “art” (high brow/ low brow crap) then you must at least see the great deal of skill that these guys have.  They are definitely some of the best pure draftsmen around.  Amazing drawing technique.  So, though it might be a bit quiet, watch the video, its pretty amazing seeing these things come together, and the pace at which it all happens!  The guys’ work in this video is Dave Gibbons, and Travis Charest.

and here’s something i did last night in anticipation of the tokidoki x marvel release in february.

i really want to learn how to draw chibibotness fairly consistently. i’ve tried doing stuff inspired by lil formers and my mr. bear’s drawings, but so far have not been doing as well as i’d like. i’m so tired…i’ve been staying up into the weeeee hours because i’ve been trying to really get time to myself…overall i’m happy to be a parent, but dammit, sometimes i just need some time alone…also, i’ve been trying to get back into drawing as an outlet for all the crap that’s swimming around in my brain…ewww i just realized that makes my brain sound like a sewer…i wonder if i have pizza eating teenage mutant ninja turtles living in my brain?

So listen, I’ll come out of the cave and say I’ve got a bit of a thing for Batman. It’s harmless and it’s not like I’ve bought the outfit and accessories at one of those seedy Batman sites or anything. Well, none that I’d admit to here.

The following article is about My Batman, the Batman interpretation that to me, is the definitive, ‘proper’ Batman. For this, I not only look specifically to the comics, as they are the source — any other novelizations, television series, or film, is merely an adaptation of that source — but it so happens that my definitive Batman can be found in one, single Batman comic, published in September 1988, Batman #423, also known as You Should Have Seen Him …

Although I am picking one specific comic, that comic is actually part of an era of Batman that I am partial to, and so some history is necessary before I get into my review.

The year is 1987. Beside the Indian Grocery store that my mom frequented, was a comic book store called Target Comics, run by, what appeared to be to my 7 year old eyes, a biker gang, although they were likely just stoners who liked rock ‘n’ roll and read a lot of comics in between perfecting Motorhead riffs. And it was amidst this rock ‘n’ roll troupe that I began my first foray into the world of comics, and to their credit, they never kicked me out or scolded me when 90% of the time, I never had enough pocket change to buy anything.

My first comic book that I think I ever bought was the first issue of the relaunch Aquaman title at the time. Although I never had enough pocket change or meager allowance money to buy subsequent issues of that particular series, I did, on one particular day, see a ‘value pack’ of Batman comics. The 3-pack was such a cool deal that I had just enough to get it, and so I did. Contained in that 3-pack were Batman #414, Batman #415, and Batman #416. While Batman #415 was part of the larger ‘Millenium’ storyline that told its story among various titles across the DC universe, Batman #414 and Batman #416 were self-contained stories about Bruce Wayne written by Jim Starlin, a fascinating and by all accounts, grossly underrated comic book writer of the 80s. While Batman #414 dealt with Bruce Wayne’s relationship to a woman whom he is unable as Batman to save from a serial killer due to a bad hunch, and the grief that follows, Batman #416 deals with the schism between the first Robin turned Nightwing, Dick Grayson, and Bruce Wayne/Batman. More broadly, the issue deals with the challenge set by father and son in expressing their need for one another, even if the son must go his own way. Both stories are remarkably nuanced and emotional, with action either being secondary or existing purely to further the emotional journey of the characters.

It was the memory of this ‘forgotten Batman’ of my youth that inspired me to dig through a back issue bin at my last comic book convention and seek out more forgotten Starlin issues, where I came across an issue that captures, in my mind, everything Batman is to me: Batman #423: You Should Have Seen Him ….

Told in the words of three different police officers sitting in a diner after their shift, each with their own ‘Batman encounter’ to tell of, the issue bears conceptual and structural similarity to Batman #250: The Batman Nobody Knows! (1973), written by Frank Robbins, in which a group of kids trade wildly imaginative (and inaccurate) campfire stories of their witnessing of Batman (the concept was later adapted to the animated show The New Adventures of Batman to pay tribute to both the Golden Age Batman and the Batman of The Dark Knight Returns, and then again in the animated film Gotham Knight). However, instead of colorful reimaginings, what we get from the resting officers of the law are accounts of three different men in one, of a hero as complex as any one of us, whom we both admire and relate to.

In the first story, a young, poor, black man named Kenny is about to throw himself off of a bridge, gaining the attention of the police and a crowd of onlookers. He explains that as a junkie, he is incapable of recovering his life from the mess it has become. Arriving on the scene is Batman, whose presence only seems to provoke the man further. After some back and forth, Kenny says, “Listen man, I’m poor, I’m black … I got a jones I can’t shake … got no family, no job … no future … ain’t no better life waiting for me.” The junkie then jumps, and Batman leaps after and catches the man in mid-air while suspending both of them from his Bat-rope.

Batman: “That was real stupid, Kenny. You threw your life away! Wasted it! By all rights, you should be dead now! But you’re not! You got another chance. It’s time to start over Kenny, get on a drug rehab program. Clean up your body and your life. Quit looking for excuses to fail! You’ve got as good a shot at life as anyone …”

While we live in the kind of sad society that thinks of dialogue as this as over the top, or conjuring elements of an ‘after school special,’ I can’t think of many moments in comics as awesome as this. Here’s Batman saying to a very troubled, angry, self-hating young man, with very little to live for, to get his life together. It’s not a deep or complex sentiment, nor is it ‘badass’, but it’s to the point and it is, in a sense, what Batman is saying to all of us who’ve been in Kenny’s situation, if even slightly. Who among us is so foolish and arrogant, and, well, darn crazy enough not to listen to Batman when he lays it down like that? The significance of this entire episode is not only its ability to motivate anyone from shaking the excuses they make for themselves, but that during this time in the 80s, drugs were becoming an ever increasing problem in America, as were racial tensions. Whether or not many of the comic’s target audience were even reading it at the time, it is essentially Batman saying to the nation’s youth, ‘Quit making excuses and get your shit together!’

Here, Batman is speaking in a tone which could be considered self-righteous, but the fact that Batman not only stops the man from committing suicide, but stays behind to lecture him, conveys that he’s not simply a hardened vigilante who goes after murderers and robbers, out for vengeance or to maintain some abstract sense of order, but rather, that he genuinely cares about this person. He wants this man, this junkie, to make something of himself, to rectify his mistakes, and very unlike the sullen, stoic Batman of later comics, he speaks his mind to him in broad daylight. Sure, there’s a time for lurking in the shadows, but sometimes, you just need to come out with it.

As a segway into the second story, the cop who’s just been told this tale replies, “the Batman I saw was a totally different person.”

He tells of a Batman not unlike the dark, violent character of Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, or Christian Bale’s Batman interrogating Detective Flask in Batman Begins (“SWEAR TO ME!”). A young punk threatens to kill an old lady inside a held up convenience store. Batman swears that if the gang member pulls the trigger, he’d inflict endless pain upon him … endless because Batman would not let him die, no matter how he suffered by his hand. The scene ends with Batman hurling the young man through the window.

This Batman is true to familiar form, but I will not discuss it in great depth here, as it has been the aspect of the character most seized upon and popularized by comics and film. I will say that it’s cool when Batman ‘gets all badass’ like he does here, but it doesn’t reach sublime depths of storytelling or characterization on its own. It is, however, a necessary incident within the larger fabric of the comic, for its plain acknowledgement of violence, juxtaposing one extreme of the character with the contradicting gentility of the third and final story.

As the second cop concludes his story with the line, “That Batman is one tough ol’ mother. Mean and cold as ice,” a third cop, Officer Kirby Jackson, approaches the two and states, “No, he’s not.”

Kirby Jackson tells how he cornered two, very young homeless children in an alley, Batman showed up, and the kids threatened Batman and the police officer with a baseball bat. While the police officer was scared for the kids, knowing Batman only as a dark, violent character of the night, Batman says unexpectedly, “Can we talk about this?” The children, coaxed by his understanding and ease with them, tell their story. Their mother had died in a car crash, and their father had lost his job soon after. In an attempt to make ends meet by cheating in a poker match, he was killed, leaving the orphaned brother and sister in the hands of the foster care system. The two siblings, having been told that they would be placed in different homes,  ran away and chose to live on the street, out of a shipping crate underneath an underpass, eating scraps. They couldn’t bear to go on without the only family they had left: each other.

The following moment the cop describes is gut wrenching:

“That’s when I saw it. He turned his face away from the fire, hoping the shadows would hide it, but I saw it anyhow.”

A single tear falls down Batman’s cowled cheek, and Batman promises that Bruce Wayne will find a home in which the children can live together.

This is the moment that makes the comic for me, because it’s not only unusual for the character in terms of what is most often written, it addresses what kind of a man Batman is. In the first story, he is direct and firm, the voice of sanity and divine purpose to a soul that’s lost its way. In the second, we see the anger and the hatred contained within him at a person who would hurt another for personal gain He is the vengeful angel we’ve always known … but in this final story, Batman is simply a man of unbridled compassion and sympathy. He’s a human being.

I remember after reading those first Starlin Batman comics, #414 and #416, I was introduced to such graphic novels as Arkham Asylum, Batman: Year One, and The Dark Knight Returns, by my uncle. The darkness and violence and psychology of those elaborate and by now famous titles captivated me as I moved into adolescence, but years later, as an adult male, they barely scratch the surface of what Batman really means to me. While they delivered the necessary ‘push’ for Batman to remerge into the mainstream as a dark and brooding figure of the night, they also began a trend that, by the time the late ‘90s came around, had turned Batman into a shallow, callous jerk. Another unfortunate result is that from the standpoint of the non-comic reading mainstream, Batman was most defined by the 1960s show, a respectable and historic pop culture product, but still campy, superficial, and comedic. Just about everyone who doesn’t know the legacy of the character well enough, but ‘just kinda’ knows it, thinks that it was Frank Miller who was most responsible for the rehauled and grown up Batman, responsible for Batman being a serious, mature character from the pulps, as opposed to the Adam West incarnation of the 1960s. The truth is, the ‘darker than dark’ Batman of Frank Miller, later co-opted by Tim Burton and popularized through subsequent writers, is to the campy 1960s Batman what a 14-year old’s perception of the world is to an 8-year old’s perception of the world. It’s grown, but not ‘grown-up’.

Actually, as my review of Batman #423, proves, Batman had been grown-up and smart for some time , thanks to writers like Jim Starlin who were carrying on the tradition of Dennis O’Neil, the real deal when it came to the intelligent design of Batman’s evolution (it is debatable what influence Frank Miller had on Starlin, as some of Frank Miller’s work came slightly before or during it, although it is inarguable that #423’s Batman is a much different hero than Frank Miller’s in terms of TDKR or Year One.). Batman was not campy in those early 70s-80s comics and he wasn’t a super-dark sociopath either. Batman, for all his tragedy, was a smart, committed, responsible man who cared for the well being of others, and who used every means at his disposal to help those people he could still save. His life experience had predisposed him to a hatred of criminals, commitment to his objectives, and a slightly rigid, if ontological sense of right and wrong. As abnormal a man as he may be, Batman’s sanity, rarely, if ever, escapes him. Most importantly, Batman had sympathy for the weak, and it was out of this sympathy that he sought to protect and help them.

Based on that acceptence of the character, Batman #423 is my definitive Batman comic … not Year One, not TDKR, or anything which has come after. The reason being that through contradiction and extremes, we find the man caught within, and it not only makes us understand him, but care about him. In the 22 pages of this monthly issue published over 20 years ago, more is covered and established about the character than in most trades or graphic novels, or for that matter, Batman films.

Anyways, that’s ‘My Batman.’ What’s yours?

No ano de 1987, os fãs de HQs tiveram uma grata surpresa ao se depararem com uma nova revista, no mínimo inusitada. Era a obra revolucionária do jovem artista Frank Miller, The Dark Knight Returns, ou Batman – O Cavaleiros das Trevas (aqui no Brasil). Essa história do homem-morcego publicada originalmente em 4 edições e posteriormente vendida em edição encadernada continha vários elementos que a fizeram alcançar um patamar de obra-prima. 1º: Colocava um personagem mundialmente conhecido em um futuro decadente, onde o próprio era decadente. E não era uma viagem ao tempo, a história realmente se passa no futuro. 2º: Era uma espécie de O Que Aconteceria Se…(título que a concorrente Marvel usava em algumas histórias, contando uma espécie de realidade paralela em que seus personagens viviam situações adversas). Nesse caso, seria algo como: O que aconteceria se o Batman vivesse num futuro caótico?. 3º: jogava como coadjuvante na história ninguém menos que o Superman, este era subordinado ao governo dos EUA, uma espécie de fantoche. 4º: A narrativa de Miller era algo original, complexa, com elementos políticos, repleto de críticas sociais. Os personagens às vezes não agem com a razão, mas são impulsionados pelo ódio e pelo medo. É uma HQ em que não há espaço pra sentimentalismos baratos.

Sem ter nada a ver (ou quase) com o (ótimo) filme homônimo dirigido por Christopher Nolan em 2008, senão pelo fato de ter seus dois vilões principais: Coringa e Duas-Caras, a HQ de Miller começa com o já velho Bruce Wayne quase morrendo em uma corrida automobilística, já mostrando que seu modo de vida ainda continua desafiando os perigos. Mas este já está aposentado, longe do combate ao crime. Harvey Dent (o Duas-Caras) quer voltar ao convívio social depois de passar anos internado, segundo os médicos, ele está pronto pra se redimir perante a sociedade, mas acaba desaparecendo até se firmar num dos núcleos de toda a trama. Ao mesmo tempo, delinqüentes que se autodenominam Gangue Mutante aterrorizam a cidade de Gotham City. Bruce Wayne tem freqüentes lembranças da morte de seus pais, fazendo com que ele chegue a raspar o bigode sem ter se lembrado de nada e com isso, vindo a ter lampejos da época de sua luta à criminalidade no passado..

Começa aí a saga do retorno do homem-morcego à Gotham perdida em meio ao caos. As atitudes do Batman são violentas, agressivas, sem perdão. Seu retorno é alardeado pelos telejornais sensacionalistas. Cada personagem (do bem) passa a história narrando os fatos em primeira pessoa. Isso torna a narrativa mais pessoal e próxima do leitor.

Voltando à história, o Duas-Caras prova que não mudou em nada e chega com ameaças típicas dos piores terroristas, num momento em que o Insano Coringa também começa a agir, levado pelo desejo de ser o grande antagonista do retorno de seu arqui-inimigo. Sem revelar mais detalhes da história, só ressalto a união do homem-morcego com uma improvável garota no lugar do antigo parceiro Robin. A história toma rumos inusitados quando todas as ameaças chegam ao mesmo tempo, tranformando Gotham no pior dos pesadelos, a um ponto em que já não parece ter solução pra mais nada.

O super-homem é mostrado como uma ameaça comunista. Lembrando que, em 1987 o mundo ainda estava vivendo sobre o medo da Guerra-Fria, o Muro de Berlim só seria derrubado 2 anos depois. O clímax, um confronto dele com o Batman é fantástico e dá uma dimensão espantosa à obra.

A arte de Frank Miller (Elektra Assassina, Ronin, Sin City, Os 300 de Esparta) é das mais fantásticas já vistas, seus traços são sombrios, cheios de sombras, estilo expressionista. Nada menos excepcional é seu roteiro. Uma história sólida, sem rodeios, contada de forma direta e nada simplória. Miller é um ótimo escritor, são dele as ótimas sagas: Demolidor – A Queda de Murdock e Batman – Ano Um  Curiosamente, a única HQ que ganha dessa obra é também do mesmo ano: a obra-prima Watchmen, escrita pelo genial Allan Moore. A arte-final é de Klaus Janson (artista que desenhou histórias do Demolidor, entre outras), e a cor ficou por conta de Lynn Varley, esposa de Miller, e que também colorizou entre outras a saga 300)

Infelizmente, nem tudo virou flores na carreira de Frank Miller de uns tempos pra cá, se bem que tudo tenha sido culpa do próprio. Miller ousou fazer uma continuação do Cavaleiro das Trevas; um projeto auto-destrutivo. Resultado: fracasso total de crítica. Nos cinemas, levado pela empolgação do diretor Robert Rodriguez ao coloca-lo como co-diretor do filme Sin City (baseado em sua obra de enorme sucesso), Miller decide que pode dirigir sozinho uma produção hollywoodiana e adapta The Spirit (obra-prima dos quadrinhos do genial Will Eisnet) e, paga caro ao ver que tudo não passou de entusiasmo infantil, entregando um filme massacrado pela crítico e público). O genial Frank Miller provou não se dar bem em continuações de suas próprias obras em quadrinhos e muito menos como diretor de cinema.

Mas uma coisa é certa: ele entrou pra história como o artista que criou a melhor obra dos quadrinhos de um personagem mundialmente conhecido. E isso não é pra qualquer um.

Before he started directing shite films, Frank Miller had a comic called Sin City, and this Brian Bolland pin-up is from Hell and Back #4.

The Spirit nas mãos de Frank Miller me decepcionou. Quer dizer, eu já sabia que o filme era ruim, mas o nome dele na direção me deu esperanças. Falsas esperanças. Esse filme não é ruim. É galhofa-trash! O horror! O horror!

Nunca li uma HQ sequer de The Spirit, de Will Eisner. Pesquisei sobre na web e descobri que não tem muito a ver com o que o filme mostrou. Posso estar errado, mas o que vi que está nos quadrinhos é um detetive que morreu e teve sua vida de volta por meio da ciência e suas histórias circulam entre mistérios, humor, ação, etc, sem poderes sobrenaturais. Mas nunca a galhofa.

O filme tem umas duas horas de duração, que parecem treze de tão boring, forçado, galhofa e chatão que é!

Sobre a atuação? Mais ou menos. Samuel L. Jackson/Octopus foi o único que entrou no clima ‘galhofa’, por isso está bom. Gabriel Macht/Spirit é de sentir pena. Você vê que ele se esforça, mas o diretor o mandou usar aquela lente azul desgraçada e deu no que deu. A bunda de Eva Mendes/Sand Saref é a melhor coisa. O quê? Isso não conta como atuação? Como assim?!

Eu sei que usei o termo “galhofa” em todos os parágrafos desse post. Para que vocês vejam o quanto estou revoltado. Revoltado com o desrespeito ao trabalho de Will Eisner. Pensei que o Frank Miller, fã confesso de quadrinhos, fosse fazer algo como o bom trabalho feito em Sin City, ótimo! Mas o filme abusa tanto do preto, tanto do clima noir, tanto de diálogos sem noção, que parece até uma paródia estilo Todo Mundo Em Pânico (o de ano 2000) de Sin City. Infelizmente Frank Miller não conseguiu imprimir a marca The Spirit no filme.

Nos primeiros cinco minutos de projeção somos obrigados a perguntar se estamos vendo uma ficção ou um documentário. A figura de Dominic Noonan, chefe de uma famosa família de mafiosos irlandeses, em primeiro plano, dizendo: “Olá, eu sou Don e está é Manchester, minha cidade.”, só pode ter saído de um roteiro de Quentin Tarantino ou das tiras de Frank Miller.

Um gângster bem britânico é a estréia de Donal Macintyre como diretor de documentários e nos mostra o dia a dia de Don e sua família mafiosa. Donal trabalhou como jornalista investigativo da BBC, se infiltrou em diversas facções criminosas na Inglaterra e ainda realizou reportagens em Beirute, na Bósnia e no Congo.

Macintyre utiliza pequenas câmeras digitais para acompanhar Dominic durante seus passeios por Manchester e realiza uma série de entrevistas onde pergunta tudo ao temido bandido, até se ele é gay! A agilidade da equipe de filmagem permite cenas inusitadas e divertidas. Don é preso numa mega-operação policial, os demais membros da gangue não são detidos e o segundo no comando tem apenas 17 anos. O que vemos a seguir é típico de uma comédia pastelão: os rapazes discutem no meio da rua, minutos após a polícia deixar o local, e as armas são visíveis na altura da cintura. Nem Woody Allen faria melhor.

A montagem dinâmica e sugestiva deixa espaço para o público respirar e rir livremente. É impossível segurar o riso quando Don explica ao diretor que obriga o bando a se vestir com terno e gravata porque “Estamos sempre sendo fotografados e filmados. Não quero ir preso sem estar bem vestido.” Na seqüência, o diretor faz um pequeno clipe com a música clássica de Pulp Fiction e fotos dos bandidos em preto e branco. Hilário.

Gang em estilo Vincent Vega

Alguns críticos ingleses disseram que Macintyre deu toques de sofisticação ao mafioso e não revelou sua verdadeira face. O filme acompanha quatro anos na vida de Dominic Noonan, incluindo suas idas e vindas do tribunal e da cadeia, e se isso não é o suficiente para deixar claro quem é o personagem principal, bem, só com uma confissão de culpa assinada.

No momento mais tenso do documentário vemos a reação de Don ao assassinato do irmão, o mais temido membro da família, e suas palavras deixam claro o que vai acontecer a seguir: “Eu sei quem foi. Ele está morto, ele já está morto. Ele sabe que está morto. Está acabado.”

O funeral de Desmond Noonan parou Manchester

Macintyre abusa das perguntas inconvenientes e dispara: “Você não acha que já correu sangue demais?” Dominic responde sem pestanejar: “O quê? Isso está só começando. Esse é só o começo“. No primeiro dia que passa na cadeia, o traficante que matou Desmond Noonan é esfaqueado e transferido para uma prisão de segurança máxima.

Poucas vezes o mundo da máfia foi retratado tão de perto e de forma tão simples e direta. Macintyre não usa câmera escondida ou filma disfarçado, ele anda na rua com sua PD-150 em punho, lado a lado com Dominic Noonan e freqüenta os bares e restaurantes com a gangue. “Não estou vendo você comer nada, Donal. Coma.”, sugere calmamente o chefe mafioso.

Católico como todo bom mafioso

O documentário não registra apenas o cotidiano de Don, o diretor também quer saber como é a família Noonan na intimidade e conversa com a irmã, sobrinhos e amigos. A relação de Dominic com os filhos recebe uma atenção especial no filme – seria uma homenagem à saga O poderoso chefão de Mario Puzo e imortalizada por Francis Ford Coppola?

Um gângster bem britânico está longe de ser um filme que faz apologia ao crime organizado, é uma denúncia, um tapa na cara das autoridades britânicas. Macintyre usa elementos da cultura pop para contar uma história tão antiga quanto a coroa da rainha.
