Esta tercera, y última, entrada sobre el Tour tiene como fin hablar de los nombres propios de esta edición. Como hilo conductor, la clasificación general.

Alberto Contador (1º): Superior. Este chico está destinado a marcar una época, dominando insultantemente en la montaña y al nivel de Cancellara en  las cronos. Segundo de muchos Tours que ganará.

Andy Schleck (2º): Creciente. Poco a poco va dando pasos y va creciendo; muy bien en la montaña y con bastante a mejorar en la crono. Se ha mostrado comativo en la montaña, y siempre es una buena noticia.Mucho han de cambiar las cosas para no ser otro de esos grandes deportistas con una carrera eclipsada por uno de los que a buen seguro pasará a la historia con letras mayúsculas.

Lance Amstrong (3º): Chapeau. Toda mi admiración para el tejano, que tras caída en la Vuelta a Castilla y León y su discreto Giro, durante el mes de Julio ha demostrado su grandeza. Aunque no volverá a ser el de antaño, el año que viene y con un equipo a su medida estará bien verle.

Bradley Wiggins (4º): Sorpresón. Muy fuerte en la montaña y en la crono, habrá que ver la forma en la que sigue su progresión, y pese a que no optará a la victoria final, en los próximos año puede dar mucho juego.

Fränk Schleck (5º): Correcto. Ha perdido su gran oportunidad para colarse en el podio de París, y a partir de ahora deberá centrar sus esfuerzos en ayudar a su hermano pequeño; mientras sus cualidades en la crono estén a la altura de las del sprint nada tiene que hacer en la general.

Andreas Klöden (6º): Segundón. Mucho talento desaprovechado en un equipo sumido en una guerra de guerrillas; muy buen Tour en su papel de gregario.

Vincenzo Nibali (7º): Creciente. Poco a poco se va haciendo un nombre en el Tour, y en los próximos años será un nombre a tener en cuenta de cara al podio de París.

Roman Kreuziger (9º): Agotado. Tras su buen inicio de temporada todo presagiaba que en el Tour daría guerra en forma de ataques en la montaña, que a la postre no se han dado. Tiene tiempo para mejorar su llegada al Tour.

Mikel Astarloza (11º): Positivo. Un análisis ensombrecerá su Tour para el gran público; ha dado a Euskaltel la vidilla que hacía tanto tiempo que los naranjas buscaban.

Carlos Sastre (17º): Decepción (I). Tras su victoria el año pasado tocó techo, y su participación en el Giro no ha servido más que para hacerle llegar demasiado desgastado. De haber llegado en plena forma, no hubiera tenido nada que hacer frente a los primeros de la general.

Sylvain Chavanel (20º): Quemado. Una primera mitad de la temporada exhuberante le ha condicionado en su carrera predilecta, no ha hecho ni de lejos el Tour de otros años, y le salva la excusa del cambio de equipo. Aún así entrega no ha faltado. Espero que el año próximo sea el de antaño. Allez Sylvain!

Brice Feillu (25º): Bienvenido. Su victoria en Ordino-Arcalís le dio la confianza necesaria para hacer un muy buen Tour; nunca en condiciones normales podrá optar a un Top10 pero sí a dejarse ver en la carrera.

Luis León Sánchez (26º): Discreto. Su victoria en Pirineos le sirve para arreglar el Tour; al igual que Chavanel, una buena primera mitad de la temporada le ha condicionado mucho, al igual que la ausencia de Valverde ha condicionado su rol en el equipo.

Haimar Zubeldia (27º): Gregario. Siempre dispuesto a ayudar al equipo; ha pasado de ser el jefe de filas de Euskaltel a trabajar para sus líderes. En su tiempo como jefe de filas fue bueno, ahora como gregario es de los que ningún líder rechazaría.

Cristophe Moreau (29º): Renacido. Ha vivido durante este Tour una segunda juventud que le ha servido para firmar con Caisse d’Epargne para el año próximo.

Cadel Evans (30º): Decepción (II).Tuvo su oportunidad de ganar el Tour el año pasado y la echó a perder por su conservadurismo. Se le ha pasado el arroz.

Tony Martin (36º): Chico-para-todo. Mucho potencial en sus piernas, y lo ha demostrado siendo pieza clave en los sprints de Cavendish, en la ascensión al Mont Ventoux y en una muy buena primera semana.

Franco Pellizotti (37º): Renovado. Durante el Giro se le pudo llegar a odiar, odio que ha desaparecido de un plumazo a base de lucha, grandes ascensiones y un poco de lástima por chutar tanto al palo. El maillot de puntos y el premio de la combatividad en un mismo Tour sólo puede significar una cosa: corredor con buenas piernas y mejor mentalidad. Bravo!

Denis Menchov (51º): Decepción (III). Tras su victoria en el Giro se podía esperar mucho de él, y más llevando el equipo que llevaba. Sin embargo su cabeza durante el mes de Julio no ha estado en territorio francés.

Rigoberto Urán (52º): Esperanza. Tras un mal inicio de Tour, en los Alpes demostró su potencial yendo a más a medida que avanzaban las etapas. Es pronto para saber la manera en la que tendrá que afrontar las grandes vueltas, pero no para saber que es un nombre a seguir.

Kim Kirchen (57º): Menguado. Sus lesiones de este año y su falta de preparación le han impedida dar guerra como hiciera el año pasado.

Thomas Voeckler (67º): Teatrero. Como siempre. Fuese cual fuese su actuación habría que calificarlo así; es un sujeto digno de estudio que este año ha conseguido su primera victoria en el Tour. Puede gustar más o menos, pero merecía esta victoria.

Stijn Devolder (83º): Iluminado. Por fin le ha entrado la razón y se ha dado cuenta que las clasificaciones generales de las grandes vueltas no son para él; el problema es que en ningún momento ha dado guerra por ninguna etapa.

Fabian Cancellara (91º): Cumplidor. Se le exigían las dos cronos, la de Mónaco y la de Annecy; la primera la consiguió sobrado, y la segunda sólo fue superado por un genial Contador; a parte de eso poco más.

Alessandro Ballan (95º): Desapercibido. La maldición del maillot arco-iris le sacudió en forma de mononucleosis a principio de temporada y le impidió llegar bien al Tour; camino de Aubenas intentó dar la campanada pero su aventura duró poco.

Heinrich Haussler (97º): Etapón. Tras sus segundos puestos en Milán-San Remo y el Tour de Flandes se apuntó una etapa de media montaña en un día de perros con final en Colmar mostrando mucha fuerza; poco más se le vio, pero ya hubieran querido otros haberse mostrado tan poco con ese resultado.

Óscar Freire (99º): Frustrado. Nunca ha tenido opción en el sprint y no ha sido, ni de largo, el de otros años.

Filippo Pozzato (100º): Camaleónico. Lo máximo que se le puede destacar del Tour es el conflicto entre la Federación Italiana y Kathusa sobre el maillot que tuvo como consecuencia que vistiese tres equipaciones diferentes durante el Tour. Sobre su carrera, bastante parecida a la de Freire, no ha encontrado su lugar.

Joan Antoni Flecha (101º): Apagado. No ha sido como años atrás un animador de la carrera mediante las largas fugas a las que nos tenía acostumbrados, sólo pilló un par en tres semanas, con poco futuro y sin demasiada determinación.

Thor Hushovd (106º): Regular. Y su maillot verde así lo demuestra; de todos modos, sólo una etapa es poco bagaje para el noruego, que se ha visto superado una y otra vez por Cavendish.

Stuart O’Grady (124º): Oxidado. Ya no es una baza para su equipo en el sprint ni ha rendido como en ediciones anteriores en las subidas.

Mark Cavendish (131º): Dominador. En mis pocos años de seguimiento del ciclismo nunca he visto a alguien dominar ninguna especialidad como el de la Isla de Man lo hace en  el sprint… y con 23 años! Como Contador este chico marcará una época en este deporte.

Robert Gesink (retirado): Camino de Perpinyà sufrió una fuerte caída que le hizo tener que retirarse. Hasta entonces no había tenido tiempo a demostrar nada, pero tenía muchas esperanzas en él de cara a los bloques de montaña.

Tom Boonen (retirado): Se le cruzó el Tour de principio a fin, empezando por la duda de su presencia por el positivo de cocaína, siguiendo por sus problemas intestinales y viendo las puertas de los sprints cerradas por caídas que nada tenían que ver con él o por mala colocación. La retirada su mejor opción, con la trayectoria que llevaba en el Tour podía haber acabado muy mal.

Amets Txurruka (retirado): Una lástima que el bizcaino no haya podido terminar el Tour, siempre guerrero y batallador, una caída mientras se encontraba en fuga le pesó demasiado en días posteriores, acabando la 19ª etapa fuera de control.

Queda ya lejos la primera semana de Julio en la que los equipos fueron llegando a cuentagotas a Mónaco para tomar la salida en el Tour. Por aquel entonces, los temas de converación más recurrentes eran la convivencia Contador-Armstrong en el seno del equipo Astana, la no-presencia de Valverde en la línea de salida, o el rendimiento que pudiesen tener Evans, Sastre, Menchov o los hermanos Schleck.

Estaban preparadas las luces y las cámaras, sólo faltaba la acción. Y una crono de 15km con una cota de cuarta categoría incluida por el Principado monegasco fue la encargada de dar el pistoletazo de salida a la ronda francesa. Esa crono tan sólo sirvió para dos cosas: para confirmar que Cancellara sigue siendo la locomotora de Berna y para evidenciar que Menchov no tenía la cabeza y las piernas en Francia.

La segunda y la tercera etapa sirvieron para que Mark Cavendish demostrase que en estos momentos no tiene rival al sprint, y más aún cuando tiene el tren perfectamente montado con Kirchen, Eisel, Rensaw, Martin y compañía. Brignoles y La Grande Motte fueron testigos de excepción del show del de la isla de Man, aunque la segunda, la etapa de La Grande Motte más que por el triunfo de Cavendish será recordada por el abanico en el que Armstrong fue el único de los favoritos que entró, y encendió los ánimos de la yihad contadorista al poner a dos de sus compañeros a tirar en el pelotón para conseguir una ventaja de 41″, tiempo que a la postre ha sido el que le ha valido para subirse al podio.

Llegaba uno de los días importantes; una crono por equipos de poco menos de 40km sin tiempos compensados, que si bien no podía hacer ganar un Tour sí que podía hacer perderlo; sino que le pregunten a Menchov o Evans. Astaná se impuso con claridad a Saxo Bank y a Garmin, que sorprendió a todos quemando cuatro corredores muy rápido y haciendo gran parte de la crono con cinco corredores. Cancellara salvaba el maillot amarillo por centésimas respecto a Armstrong.

Siguiente parada: Perpinyà, muy cerca de la estación de trenes que en su día Salvador Dalí definió como centro cósmico del universo, y alguna alineación extraña entre planetas debió producirse porque Thomas Voeckler por fin consiguió una etapa en el Tour después de una fuga que resolvió a poco menos de 5km de meta. Y el Tour llegaba a Barcelona, etapa que bien merecía su propia entrada.

¡Y ya llegaban los Pirineos! Sobre el papel poco tenían a ofrecer, la organización había previsto un primer bloque de montaña suave para centrar la emoción en los Alpes y sobre todo en el Mont Ventoux. La primera etapa pirenaica tenía como destino la estación de esquí de Arcalís, una ascensión que ni de lejos merecía la consideración de Hors Categorie y que sirvió para poder conocer a Brice Feillu, el hermano pequeño de Romain, que a partir de aquel día dio bastante juego, poner de líder a Rinaldo Nocentini y ver que Contador iba más fino que el resto de capos. La segunda de las etapas, por desgracia no la pude ver, estar en fiestas de Teruel me lo impidió, lástima, la única etapa que no vi resultó ser la mejor de Pirineos, y además con victoria de LuisLe. Y para acabar el tríptico pirenaico, el paso por el Tourmalet con final en Tarbes; entre los favoritos nada reseñable, pero sirvió para constatar el cambió de mentalidad de Pellizotti, que a partir de aquel día decidió cambiar un puesto por mucha presencia en carrera, la montaña y la combatividad, aunque sin el premio de la etapa, aquel día fue Fedrigo el que le privó.

Y tras los Pirineos, otra vez era hora de Cavendish, con dos etapas más, en Issoudoun y Saint Fargeaus sin demasiada discusión. La siguiente destinación era Vittel, cuya agua es el eterno patrocinador de las victorias de etapa, con Nicki Sörensen como triunfador después de unos 10km finales espectaculares en los que dejó, entre otros, a Pellizotti y Egoi Martínez (que continuarían hasta París su lucha por el maillot de la montaña) a 45″. La siguiente etapa prometía, con llegada a Colmar y con muchos puertos que consagró a Heinrich Haussler, que tras un excelente inicio de temporada con dos segundos puestos en Milán-San Remo y Tour de Flandes, se llevó una gran victoria, por delante de Amets Txurruka, Brice Feillu y un desfondado Syvain Chavanel, que a cuentagotas llegaron adelantados al gran grupo.

Se acercaban los Alpes, pero antes había que llegar a Besançon, donde Serguei Ivanov impuso su experiencia para ganar en solitario separándose de un grupo en el que iba gente como Roche, Le Mevel o Hincapie, que por unos segundos recortados al final por Garmin no se vestiría de amarillo. Lo que no pudo conseguir Hincapie lo hizo Contador al día siguiente en la primera etapa alpina en Verbier, en el único final en alto que ofrecía el segundo bloque de montaña, distanciando a poco más de 40″ a Andy Schleck y algo más de 1′ al resto de favoritos. La segunda etapa alpina tenía como dificultades dos colosos, los dos Saint Bernard, el grande y el pequeño, en los que Mikel Astarloza dio a Euskaltel su tercer triunfo en el Tour, aunque después haya sido descalificado por positivo de EPO, y en el que Armstrong dio muestras de que no había ido al Tour de paseo con unos de los mejores arranques (tras haberse descolgado) que mi corta memoria recuerda. Y llegó la etapa, la gran etapa, un perfil que hacía presagiar una buena jornada de ciclismo, pero que nadie podría pensar que fuese a convertirse en una de las mejores etapas de lo que llevamos de siglo, un ambicioso Saxo Bank seleccionó la carrera de manera que sólo los hermanos Schleck, Klöden y Contador aguantaron el ritmo en el Col de Romme, que se encadenaba con el Col de Colombière, en el que Contador, muy a su pesar descolgó a Klöden; la llegada en Le Grand Bornard, fue un pacto entre los Schleck y Contador que supuso una victoria para Fränk.

Y llegaba la crono de Annecy, y Contador se impuso a todo el mundo y acabó de confirmar la general, en la que Andy se postulaba como claro candidato al segundo puesto y Armstrong al tercero, mientras que Wiggins, Klöden y Fränk se convertían en outsiders al podio final en París. Ya quedaba poco, una etapa con final en Aubenas con un puerto de segunda a 15km en la que Cavendish asombró superando la dificultad e imponiéndose al sprint y el Mont Ventoux, hubiese estado bien escribir mucho sobre esa etapa, pero puede resumirse a triunfo de Gárate sobre Tony Martin e impotencia de los Schleck frente a Armstrong y Contador.

Llegaba el Tour a París, y Cavendish volvía a ganar, aunque no conseguía el maillot de la regularidad, que acabó consiguiendo Hushovd. Contador conseguía su segundo Tour, y parece que caerán más. Tal y como el Giro deparó un último golpe de teatro con la caída de Menchov (sí, fue al Tour), el Tour deparó un último golpe de teatro con la confusión del himno español por el danés.

A good friend of mine, a fellow pastor-type and bicycle enthusiast, got me going on the Tour de France this summer.  I’ve been riding my bike for a lot of years, and one would think that I would have the Tour pretty much on my annual radar screen.  It’s taken me this long.  Now, thanks to Versus High Definition, I’m hooked.

They call it the single most grueling sporting event on the Planet.  I think it’s a big deal to ride a “Century” (one hundred miles).  I’ve got one on my calendar for next month.  But think of it: twenty-one individual days of riding, for a cumulative two-thousand two hundred miles through some of the most spectacular, muscle cramping, bone crunching, mind bending, heart breaking country-side on the globe.  In years past, I think I was confused by all the complicated team competition; the yellow jersey, green jersey, even red on white polka-dot jersey.  I knew that Lance Armstrong was a cancer survivor and one of the rare Americans to not only contend, but win a string of victories.  I also knew that there has been considerable discussion about doping in the sport, and that the French were quick to suggest that Armstrong depended on illegal substances, mainly because no one thought it possible to perform anywhere close to that level post-chemo.

Maybe it was the pure exhilaration of the stunning high definition scenes from a helicopter following the winding roads up the French Alps through charming villages and broad green meadows and jagged peaks and patches of snow and imagining, just imagining, a human body prepared for such an extreme challenge.  Maybe it was the streets lined with supporters all cheering the cyclists on up the hill; or the camera angle from the back of a motorcycle riding alongside the high performance bikes.  Maybe it was the head to head competition between two teammates: a Spaniard, young and powerful and brash, against an aging American, old and powerful and formerly brash.  Maybe it was the capacity to record each four-hour stage on a digital video recorder, and then speed through enough of it to get a sense of how this event unfolds.  I was a couple weeks in before I latched on, but that was enough.

The race built to a crescendo when at Stage 20, the riders take on a one hundred fourteen mile ride, the last thirteen miles of which is a steep climb up Mont Ventoux.  The uphill does not end until the finish line.  By this next to the last stage, the Spaniard, Alberto Contador (age twenty-seven) had established his place as the overall leader.  (In a unilateral and controversial move, he broke from the team’s strategy and attacked early to secure an early, insurmountable lead.)  But the question on everyone’s mind was this: could Lance Armstrong, after a three year absence from the race, at the ripe old age of thirty-seven, maintain his position at third place, and get him on the coveted podium in Paris the next day?

Apparently, all of Europe wondered, too.  Seems they all showed up along the course to see.  Those who were not there sat in front of their television sets, along with an unprecedented number of North Americans.  And as the riders hammered up the hill after a punishing first hundred miles, Lance did not disappoint.  Even a concerted, powerful effort by the Schleck brothers from Luxembourg, after a surprisingly strong race, could not edge Armstrong out.  Lance drew on something super-human, and rode the race of the year up the impossible mountain to the finish line at six-thousand two hundred and seventy three feet elevation.  Above the tree line.

Before this year, I was completely unaware that the final stage of the Tour de France is anything but a formal part of the race.  It’s a party.  It’s been the tradition since the first race in 1902.  The one hundred and two mile stage starts at Montereau-Fault-Yonne, ends on the streets of Paris. Along the way, riders chat and laugh, especially Armstrong, and they sip champagne handed to them by admiring onlookers, enjoying the spectacular countryside and on into the City of Light.  The route goes along the River Seine past the great Notre Dame Cathedral and into Paris.  Thousands of spectators welcome the riders, now worn from well over two thousand arduous miles (three thousand four hundred fifty nine kilometers), honed to optimum conditioning.  After three weeks, the riders have zero body fat.  They are now pedaling machines, all systems geared for low-level human powered flight.  Their wind swept helmets and designer wraparound sunglasses in matching colors give them the look of speed.  And now comes the finish.  Ten laps around a closed off Champs-Élysées up toward the Arc de Triomph as the crowd roars its approval.

The last sprint provides the final moment of drama.  Someone will win the coveted Stage 21.  But the real prize is the Yellow Jersey, the overall winner of the Tour de France.  This year, it went to the Spaniard, Alberto Contador; his second win.  Armstrong, who has won more tours than anyone in the hundred-year history of the race – seven – stood beneath Cantador on the podium claiming Third.

I’m learning more about this Texan who is now credited with attracting the massive crowds; Lance Armstrong – the cancer survivor; the man who has mellowed with age, like a fine Bordeaux, I suppose.  I downloaded the audio version of his 2001 book, “It’s Not About the Bike.” His personal life has been tumultuous.  His childhood, full of conflict and disappointment. He is very close to his mother, who raised him with tenacity and courage.  His biological father vanished.  His first stepfather was a church going man who somehow believed he had biblical authority to abuse his family (I hate it when that happens).  Lance is cynical about religion.  He’s had difficulty sticking with some of the amazing women he’s become attached to.

But I did not know how serious that cancer was ten years ago.  It would have killed most people.  Now, he says, he lives for something bigger than himself.  He’s still convinced – it’s not about the bike.  He is a friend of cancer victims.  He encourages them to Live Strong (the name of his foundation).

And next year, a rematch is brewing.  Headlines are already pulsating.  The young Contador versus the Old Man of the Tour.  It is going to be big.

19. – 21. Etappe

Die Liberation meint, der Sieg Alberto Contadors sei schlicht Betrug. Schliessen wir die Diskussion um Dopingpraktiken für erste mit der folgenden Beobachtung ab: Sollte AC, wie ihn Lance Armstrong auf Twitter liebevoll nennt, tatsächlich sowohl an der Strippe als auch an der Nadel von Dr. Fuentes oder einem anderen Höllenarzt hängen, dann bleibt eine andere Frage unbeantwortet. Warum können ihm die Schlecks, Armstrong, Klöden, Wiggins, Pellizotti und so weiter bei fast jeder Gelegenheit folgen? Ende der Diskussion (Einwand: Sie folgen ihm, als ginge es um ihr Leben, während er, Trikotreissverschluss und Mund geschlossen, seine Überlegenheit spazieren fährt).

Die Tour ist eine Schimäre wie Herr Tur Tur, der Scheinriese, in Michael Endes «Lukas der Lokomotivführer». Herr Tur Tur (um nicht zu sagen ‘Tour Tour’) scheint um so grösser, je weiter man sich von ihm entfernt. Ähnlich verhält es sich mit der Tour: Je näher man bei ihr weilt, umso weniger bekommt man von ihr mit. Entweder kündigt sie sich stundenlang an, oder sie ist bereits vorbei. Wer im Rennen gerade führt, wo die Ausreisser stehen erfährt man nur, wenn man sich zurückzieht, um ihn einem Café in der sommerlichen Stille der Provence auf einem kleinen Fernseher mit ausgebleichtem Bild die Hatz von Montélimar zum Mont Ventoux zu verfolgen.

Der ehemalige Etappensieger der Tour de Suisse und Spanische Meister Garate meisterte den Berg am schnellsten. Garate musste zwei Jahre und zwanzigtausend Rennkilometer warten, bis ihm endlich wieder ein Sieg vergönnt war, der ihn dieses Mal so euphorisierte, dass er von seiner Ankunft im Paradies sprach. Die Hölle am Ventoux wird nur für denjenigen zum Paradies, der als erster oben ist.

Lange Tage vor dem Spanier Garate sicherten sich einige holländische Motorhomes die ersten Plätze auf dem Berg. Sukzessive gesellten sich weitere dazu. Am Donnerstag war längst kein Platz mehr am Strassenrand. Der Pilgerzug brach nicht ab. Und als ich am Samstag morgen um halb sieben im Salon der Maison Trévier in Carpentras erwachte, schliefen am Mont Ventoux bereits zehntausende in ihren Autos, Zelten, Caravans.

Dann erwacht auch Bédoin, einst Bedouin genannt, aus seinem leichten Sommerschlaf. Horden von Belgiern drängen auf die vordersten Plätze in den Cafés, stehen laut in breiten Schlangen vor Bäckereien und Charcuterien. Kurz nach neun sind die Geschäft bereits halb leer gefressen. Die andere Hälfte der Invasoren stammt aus Holland. Sie bringen nicht nur Stimmung, sondern auch gleich den ganzen Kühlschrank mit. Gäbe es keine Pays Bas, die Tour würde zwar nicht gänzlich unter Ausschluss der Öffentlichkeit ausgetragen, ginge aber der Hälfte aller Zuschauer verlustig.

Nach den Motorhomes, aber noch vor den 156 zur Etappe auf den Mont Ventoux gestarteten Fahrern, schlängelt sich ein Tatzelwurm aus einigen tausenden Velofahrern, flankiert von stündlich mehreren zehntausend Fussgängern die schmale, steile Strasse durch die Wälder in Richtung des kahlen Hauptes des provenzalischen Riesen. Braungebrannte Männer mit aschgrauem Haar, dicke Männer mit kugelrunden, schweissnassen Gesichtern, übergewichtige Frauen, denen man den Blutdruck im Gesicht ablesen kann, drahtige Jungs im Wiegetritt, hübsche Frauen mit schlanken, braunen Beinen und festem Hintern, Franzosen mit der Bitterkeit von über zwanzig Jahren ohne Toursieg im Gesicht, easy going overseas auf bunten Treks, elegante Italiener, die den Hauch eines Eau de Cologne beim Überholen hinter sich lassen, alle auf Fahrrädern zwischen sechs und sechzehn Kilogramm sowie sechzig und neuntausend Franken, aber in Endeffekt allesamt drahtige Esel, flankiert von einer Menschenmenge, die schon am Vormittag alles bisher Gesehene überstieg.

Der dörren Hitze entflieht man schon bald in den Pinienwäldern am Südhand, wo verschlafene gestalten in Campingstühlen in ihren Schlafsäcken hocken. In einer Lichtung am Strassenbord haben findige Belgier eine Bar aufgebaut und bieten Dinge feil, die das Herz begehrt: Bier vom Fass. Um zehn nach zehn ein kühler Becher für zwei Euro, das beruhigt den Kopf, kühlt den Körper und gibt mehr Kraft für die noch folgenden fünfzehn Kilometer bis zum Gipfel, als jeder Energieriegel zu spenden vermag.

Die Menschenmassen werden immer dichter, doch man sieht sie immer weniger. Die Graffitis auf der Strasse werden sinnlos, niemand kann sie lesen, niemand wird sie lesen. «Andy Frank Andy Frank» nicht, und auch nicht «Lance 4 president». Ein Mann mit Schweizerkreuz auf seinem Trikot zieht seinen Buben an einem Seil den Berg hinauf und erntet Applaus.

Kalk macht Tee ungeniessbar. Kalk macht Seife unbrauchbar. Kalk frisst sich von oben herab in die Wälder hinein. Ob wirklich der Gipfel eines nahezu zweitausend Meter hohen Berges abgeholzt wurde, um Schiffe zu bauen? Die Rhone fliesst hinter Orange vorbei. Wer wollte das Holz von der Himmelspforte der Provence an die Gestade des Flusses tragen? Der eisige Mistral macht den Kalk spröde und gerinnt das Blut in den Beinen. Die Muskeln werden kalt und schliesslich hart. Hart wie der Kalk.

Nur im Windschatten von unbekannten kommt man vorwärts, die wiederum im Windschatten eines weiteren Unbekannten Schutz suchen, als, das Observatorium schon im Blick, ein kalter Wind mit sechzig Kilometern pro Stunde in die erhitzten Gesichter stösst. Ketten rasseln, Velos bleiben stehen, ein Gehen auf zwei Rädern. Der Ventoux zeigt sich an diesem hellen Sommermorgen von seiner teuflischen Seite, grandios assistiert von seinen dämlichen Gehilfen in Uniformen, den Gendarmen. Fünf Kilometer vor dem Gipfel bereits wollten sie die Rennfahrer dazu zwingen, zu Fuss weiter zu gehen. Hinter der nächsten Kurve steigen wir wieder auf.

Tausend Meter vor dem Ziel ist Schluss. Niemand darf weiter. Eine dumme Regel, gewiss, aber wer soll gegen einen Kordon aus zwanzig Gendarmen bestehen? Zu erschöpft, zu gleichgültig, aber auch zu euphorisch steht man unter einem Himmel aus Glas neben all denen, die mit einem hochgefahren sind, den drahtigen, die mit einem unerklärlichen Tempo an einem vorbeigezogen sind, und an den Dicken, die eine halbe Stunde später ebenfalls am Ende der Strasse angelangt waren.

Vier Stunden später kamen Garate und Martin. Dann Pellizotti und Kreuziger. Schliesslich die Gruppe mit den Schlecks, Armstrong, Contador und Wiggins. Acht Sekunden. Dann waren sie vorbei. Contador konterte im vorbeifahren einen Angriff der Schlecks und neutralisierte ihn. Ein Moped mit zwei Beinen. Derart fasziniert von diesem Exploit, fiel mir nicht mal Armstrong auf. Vielleicht war ich aber auch einfach zu erschöpft von Hitze und Höhe, müde im Kopf mit mürben Beinen. Waren das wirklich die Schlecks, an der Spitze dieser Gruppe? Peter aus California sagte mir am Abend, Lance habe «solid as a rock» ausgesehen.

Tausende von Kilometern hinter sich, ein Zeitfahren, ein Temporitt und am Schluss der Ventoux. Was für Männer sind das, die wie Wesen von einem anderen Stern an uns in einer Geschwindigkeit vorbeizogen, die so surreal war, wie der gleissende Kalk und das endlose Blau des Himmels? Das Gruppetto würde die Lösung bringen.

Fünfundzwanzig Minuten später: Die circa siebzig Fahrer im Grupetto fuhren schneller, als die schnellsten, schneidigsten und dynamischsten Amateure am morgen. Danach blieb nur noch die Fahrt ins Tal, die bereits von dieser unerklärlichen Melancholie überzogen war, die jeweils Orte grosser Geschehen nach dem Spektakel überzieht.

Hoy concluyó el Tour de France 2009 en París, después de una etapa final mayormente ceremonial sobre terreno plano. En la etapa del Sábado, Alberto Contador prácticamente aseguraba su segunda victoria en el prestigioso Tour de Francia, mientras Lance Armstrong retuvo su tercer puesto en la general después de la penúltima etapa que concluyó en el exigente Mount Ventoux.

Dos años después de su primer triunfo en el Tour de France, Alberto Contador volvió a los más alto del podio de los Campos Elíseos para recoger el título de número uno de la 96 edición, la que coloca al ciclista español en el palmarés con dos victorias al lado de nombres ilustres como Gino Bartali, Fausto Coppi, Bernard Thevenet o Laurent Fignon.

Sobre la diferencia entre la victoria de 2007 y la de 2009, Contador dijo: “Las dos victorias han sido muy difíciles. En 2007 un poco apurada con la contrarreloj final, ahora tenía más renta, más ventaja. Este año ha sido una combinación física y mental, la de 2007 fue solo física. ¿Cuál me costó más? No sabría decir cual”.

Respecto a su futuro, Contador dejó claro dos cosas: que habrá bastante movimiento y que no seguirá al lado de Lance Armstrong. El ciclista de Pinto dejó claro que su actual compañero Lance Armstrong será un rival para las próximas ediciones del Tour.

“El año que viene Lance Armstrong hará un buen papel en el Tour y será candidato a la general. Sin duda que será un rival muy duro”, afirmó. Contador no se mostró preocupado por la posibilidad de alcanzar récords, como los cinco de Indurain ó los 7 de Armstrong. 

Lo que nos deja el Tour 2009 fue la gran actuación de Andy Schleck, quien aportó combatividad sin límites durante las montañas. Armstrong logró su objetivo mínimo de pisar de nuevo el podio del Tour, 4 años después, y por si alguien tenia dudas de que se había dopado, a sus 37 años está en un gran nivel, ”Asegurar la tercera plaza está bien contra estos chavales. No me puedo quejar, siendo un vejete. La carrera ha sido muy agresiva de principio a fin”, aseguró el 7 veces ganador del Tour. Fränk Schleck, otro integrante del Saxo Bank, junto con su hermano Andy, estarán tentados para la próxima temporada ciclística a rodar en el nuevo equipo de Lance Armstrong, será el Team Radioshack para la temporada 2010, en la que tiene previsto correr en el Tour de Francia probablemente al mando del ahora director deportivo del Astana, Johan Bruyneel. También fue noticia la ausencia de casos de dopaje. La organización no dio a conocer un solo positivo en las tres semanas de carrera. ¿Cambio de actitud de los corredores?, ¿efectividad en los controles? El Tour fue muy criticado por los escándalos en los tres últimos años. La tranquilidad en esta materia marcó la edición 2009.

Today is the last stage of the Tour de France. While the ride around Paris and down the Champs-Elysees is mostly ceremonial, there will be at least one fight between Thor Hushovd and Mark Cavendish for the Green Jersey.

For me, this year’s tour has been full of rich characters and story arcs. For Team Astana, it started on Stage I when Armstrong showed he could still ride a bicycle but the team leader position would not be his by default. Armstrong showed he was a wiser cyclist than Contador on Stage III and overtook him in the GC.

Team Saxo Bank displayed their prowess immediately too, when Fabian Cancellara won Stage I, the invidual time trial. Frank and Andy Schleck, the brothers from Luxemborg, would be formidable. On Stage XVIII, one day after their teammate Jens Voigt crashed, they were relentless in attack and won.

During the Team Time Trial, Astana put aside all else and won Stage IV as a unit.At Arcalis, Contador made a savage accelearation up the mountain to earn back the best GC position for Astana. El Pistolero won again at Verbier and took the Maillot Jaune.

And who could forget the constant battle for sprinter supremacy and the green jersey? On days when the stages were colorless until the last kilometer, Mark Cavendish, Thor Hushovd, and Tyler Farrar lit up the road in frame-bending bursts of speed. Cavendish was clearly the man to beat, he would go on to win 6 stages in the tour. But Hushovd was more than just a sprinter, by winning critical intermediate sprint points, he was able to win the battle for the Green Jersey. Americans can look to Tyler Farrar to beat out both men and win a stage in the Tour de France 2010.

On the day of the final time trial, the riders in the top ten GC were solidly there. However, the final configuration was certainly not set. Cancellara, like Stage I, set the time to beat early on, but beaten it was by the final rider and yellow jersey of Contador.

Then up Mont Ventoux, hundreds of thousands of people watched as five men fought for their positions on one of the most fabled climbs of the Tour de France. Ultimately, we were all left with the status quo in the GC, which is not to say it wasn’t a brillant race.

In Paris, around the Arc de Triomphe and down the Champs-Elysees, Cavendish annihilated the other sprinters. Everyone else of consequence were just holding on to the rapid pace set by Columbia-HTC.

The beast is done, the riders are over Mont Ventoux in one piece. Aside from the parade on the Champs-Elysees the 2009 Tour de France is over.

Woke up fairly early to watch the last “real” stage of the TdF today with my wife and good neighbor, one of the first times I’ve had company for the tour this year. I expected Mont Ventoux would be the best stage of the tour to watch, with so much on the line, this late in the Tour, there would be fireworks (as Bobke would say). I can say it was fun to watch but there wasn’t much (any?) shake-up in the GC.

On Ventoux, the riders to watch were the current holder of the Maillot Jaune, Alberto Contador, the Maillot Blanc, Andy Shleck, his brother Frank Schleck, Lance Armstrong and the Brit Bradley Wiggins. They were all marked by each other and stayed in a close pack for a good amount of time. Andy accelerated up the beast several times always with Contador on his wheel. Once Andy realized he was only losing his brother, he sat-up.

Armstrong needed only to prevent Wiggins or F. Schleck to gain time on him. When it counted, Armstrong was able to do that, and stayed on the wheels of his opponents. Eventually “the elastic snapped” for Wiggins and he became a non-threat for Armstrong. The Schlecks saw an opening for Frank to leap-frog Wiggins in the GC but their efforts were to no avail.

In summary, today’s race up Mont Ventoux went alright, it could have gone better, but it definitely could have gone all wrong for the “old fart.” Welcome back Lance, looking forward to next year and everything in between.

As an aside, pretty sure ol’ Zombie-Face, Tony Martin, blew chunks a handful of times on his way to a second-place finish.

Aţi ucis lumina. *

Exceptând cele vreo 4 atacuri ale lui Andy Schleck şi acţiunea uşor cretină a lui Pellizotti spectacoulul a fost ucis în aceasta ultimă etapa. S-a pedalat mai mult cu mintea decât cu inima; au fost strategii de echipă. Cam ca la fotbal – tacticizat.  Nu am nimic cu Garate şi nu ii contest victoria.

Dar, într-un tur şi aşa sărăcit, parcă special simplificat pentru a nu încuraja consumul de suc de portocale, tur în care am vibrat doar în ultima săptămână, ma asteptam la spectacol măcar aici. Îl pretindeam chiar.

Condator, deşi capabil aici de victorie, clar că nu a atacat ca să se revanşeze faţă de echipă şi să arate că e un bun coechipier, după ce pe Verbier l-a lăsat de izbelişte pe Kloden. Azi rămas să-l ajute pe Armstorng. Chiar dacă acesta nu a avut nevoie de ajutorul lui. (Kloden şi-a arătat din nou limitele, când a fost el la trenă cei doi evadaţi s-au depărtat, poate, decisiv).

Andy Schleck a vrut să-l ajute pe fratele sau să urce pe ultima treaptă a podiumului. Însă a fost evident ca Frank nu va putea să se debaraseze de Lance. Care la rândul lui era clar că era incapabil să-l atace pe Andy, aşa că s-a decis să-şi conserve rezultatul.

Aşa că, Alberto a stat dupa Lance, Lance dupa Frank, iar Frank a facut ca Andy sa stea după el. Bună strategie!

Totuşi cred că Andy trebuia să atace victoria de etapă, văzând după atâţia kilometri că Frank nu poate. Dar s-ar putea că după ultimul atac, vântul din faţă să-l fi oprit decisiv (parcă sufla cu 42km/h ceea ce nu e deloc puţin).

Yesterday I predicted the results for the individual time-trial. I thought Armstrong would finish first. From 1999 to 2005, Armstrong won each individual time trial except 2003. As a time trial specialist and now a GC contender, I thought Bradley Wiggins would finish second. Finally, Kloden would finish third, the German has always been a strong time-trialist.

Watching time trials are nerve-wracking, I can’t imagine being a rider, racing against the ticking clock. An early man out, Fabian Cancellara made the best time, until the final man on the course finished. Alberto earned the best time of the day.

Astana was afraid of Bradley Wiggins for good reason, he was setting the bar at each of the time checks but slowed down near the end. He ended up 43 seconds behind Contador. Next, Andreas Kloden finishes 54 secs behind Contador’s time.

Now for Lance Armstrong. At the first time check he was a little over 20 secs behind the best time of Wiggins, and over 40 secs behind Wiggo’s time at the summit of the small climb. In a great finish he bested Wiggo with a final time of 50 min to secure his 3rd position in the GC.

Frank and Andy Schleck were both expected to drop lots of time against the others because time-trialing is not their speciality. Frank lost 2min 34 secs to Contador, while Andy exceeded expectations with a finish of 1min 45secs behind Contador

Alberto Contador tore it up and I was dissapointed. Not only were my predictions incorrect, but also the cyclist who has spurned his teammates has been rewarded again.

Har inte följt Tour de France så noga i år. Det beror dels på tidsbrist, men även på något annat. För precis som så många andra så har alla dopingfall de senaste åren gjort att även jag har det lite svårt att engagera mig i cykel nuförtiden. Hur många av forna tiders segrare som var dopade är det så klart ingen som vet, men att det stora flertalet säkert använde sig av någon form av idag otillåten metod för att orka igenom de långa etapperna är väl inte otroligt. Men om vi lägger den diskussionen åt sidan, så har det ändå varit väldigt fascinerande att följa slutet på årets tour.

Jag följde den supertuffa bergsetappen i går där totalledaren Alberto Contador skakade av sig allt motstånd, förutom bröderna Schleck. Han ingick sedan i ett tremannalag med dem och körde på ett suveränt vis bort de värsta konkurrenterna bakom, inte minst Wiggins – och de egna stallkamraterna! En fin gest var sedan hur han lät den äldre av bröderna, Frank, ta hem etappsegern - dennes första på touren. Bara en olycka kan nu hindra spanjoren från att ta hem totalsegern i Paris på söndag. Och inget bittert skitprat från Lance Armstrong kan hindra detta från att ske.

Enligt mig så gjorde Contador helt rätt när han försökte skaka av sig Schleckbröderna. Att sedan inte den egna stallkamraten Klöden orkade hänga på var inte hans problem. Armstrong hade gjort samma sak om han hade orkat och haft chansen. Han är helt enkelt bara sur över att världens bäste cyklist (Contador) inte vill skänka bort sin givna totalseger till en föredetting. Om Armstrong vill vinna totalt så borde han hängt med när Contador och de andra bröt sig loss, men det orkade han inte. Skönt att slippa honom.

Det blev en mycket spännande etapp idag. De alla bergen satte sina avtryck på etappen. Bröderna Schleck visade sig vara urstarka uppför och lyckades bli av med alla förutom just Contador. En bit på sista berget var de en kvartett på fyra cyklister. Det var bröderna Schleck och Astanacyklisterna Contador och Klöden. Contador satte in en attack som Andy Schleck körde in med Fränk på rulle. Just i det ögonblicket släppte Klöden och tappade och tillslut rätt mycket på tättrion. På berget innan hade de blivit av med Armstrong, Wiggins, Nibali, Vandevelde och några cyklister till. Trion följdes sedan in till mål där F.Schleck vann etappen.

Bröderna Schleck gick idag upp på platserna två och tre i sammandraget. Det är ett fantastiskt brödrarpar, kanske det bästa vi har sett i cykelhistorien. Idag visade de sin styrka när de verkligen lyckades knäcka Astanateamet. Det trodde jag faktiskt aldrig att de skulle lyckas med. De lyckades dock aldrig att knäcka Contador även om jag tror att de inte var så långt ifrån. Contador lyckades genom att hänga med att öka sitt försprång. Han leder nu med 2.26 före A.Schleck och är bättre än båda bröderna på tempo. Han kommer att ha en ledning på över tre minuter efter imorgon. Då har han egentligen avgjort Touren. Så mycket tappar han inte på lördag.

Thor Hushovd lyckades ta tolv poäng i poängtävlingen. Han gjorde det smart och rykte loss från klungan uppför första berget och genom sin fantastiska nedförskörning lyckades han både gå ifatt och förbi utbrytarna. Han höll två berg till och utökade sin ledning mot Cavendish till 30 poäng. Det känns bergssäkert för norrmannen.

Tempo imorgon, men då sitter jag på Kastrup flygplats och väntar in mitt flyg till Paris. Där lär väl finnas någon bar som visar loppet.
