My earliest blog yet.

I woke at 6.30 this morning; second day in a row. Just two days into a new routine, but already I feel better. I’m off to Cheltenham in a bit, to get some ADR (Additional Dialogue Recording – redubbing voices on film when the sound quality as captured isn’t good enough) work done; possibly a two nighter. Not sure whether I’m particularly looking forward to it, but at least it’s a chance to take my new wardrobe out on a road trip.

As for now I’ve chewed my bagel, brewed my tea, and am watching Frasier whilst draped in a dressing gown. Once the tea’s drunk and this typed I shall shower, dress (in fine style) and then make my way to Queen’s Park (and there to catch a lift). It should be a fun little car journey, whatever happens.

The new wardrobe? Not really, just some goodies from the second hand shop I got yesterday – it’s nice to wear something new isn’t it? Not new in the sense that it’s recently made, just new in the sense that you haven’t worn it before. How we dress –

Oh bugger. Just saw an advert for the new Sherlock Holmes film. Why? Just… exasperating. Feel I really need that shower now.

– How we dress is how we represent ourselves to the world; to be introduced to new options and new items of clothing provides us with a chance to better express ourselves, to express new, hitherto unseen aspects of our personality.

The internal informs the external, but the contrary is also true. I know that I feel different depending on how I dress; a well made suit gives a completely different Brice to cowboy boots and a leather jacket. As such, new clothes (at their best) provide us with the opportunity not only to better express ourselves, but to better understand and explore ourselves, to better understand what and who we can be. If you’re willing to let them.

Of course, on the other hand, this is all alarmingly pretentious and silly… I mean at the end of the day clothes keep us warm, and keep billionaire designers and third world children in work. Not that big a deal.

That aside, I’ve developed a passion for them. I’ve always been the first to dismiss clothes and fashion as shallow, daft and egotistical, but I understand now that it doesn’t have to be an ego thing; loving clothes and fashion doesn’t have to be just about vanity.

When I look at a pure wool suit, or leather tooled brogues, or a silk cravat I get a bit geeky and enthusiastic. I prefer them over their viscose, pleather and polyester counterparts not out of snobbery, but out of admiration for the craft and for the quality. I’ve always been a collecter; and that’s just what this is. Another collection. It’s a chance to align myself to another way of living, of (as I’ve talked about before) maintenance and care. Taking responsibility for what I wear, and for the upkeep of what I wear, in the long term gives me pleasure. Polishing my shoes, ironing my shirt, matching my suits, it might just be the relative novelty of these things but they’re more than just chores; they’re meditations. Little bastions of peace, preparation and introspection.

Well, that’s enough from me. My Lady Grey is drained and Frasier’s drawing to a farcical conclusion, so methinks it’s time to bathe before pomposity takes any further hold.

Good luck with your days and your apparel,

-Brice out.

I’m a sucker for a good sitcom. Whether it’s reruns of Everybody Loves Raymond, Frasier,

I’m a sucker for a good sitcom. Whether it’s reruns of Everybody Loves Raymond, Frasier, King of Queens, Scrubs, or something completely new like The Middle, there’s just something about them that brings a little spice to my life.

It’s no secret that life can be mundane. For some, waking up can be a downright chore when tomorrow looks eerily similar to what yesterday did. And yet, you turn on a good sitcom episode and there’s a subtle sense of joy and happiness that exudes from it. So, I ask myself, why? What is it about certain sitcoms that breathes a little extra life in me?

My favorite book of the Bible has always been Ecclesiastes. I love one of the main themes of the book: Life is meaningless. Sounds depressing, doesn’t it? I mean, let’s be real, that is probably what a large population of people fear the most … ‘My life was meaningless.’ But when you take the time to dig further and really study Solomon’s philosophy on life, you realize the beautiful irony he lays out in those 12 chapters: In many ways, life truly is meaningless, so enjoy its simple pleasures and make the most of the time you are given.

Twenty-two minutes … that is the average sitcom episode minus commercials (God bless TiVo). Have you ever tried to take 22 minutes and soak in all that the normal, everyday life has to offer? Network TV does all the time, so why can’t you and I?

I have watched a lot of sitcoms, and some of the most memorable episodes that stick with me time and time again are the ones that are often about something simple, and occasionally nothing at all (or of minimal substance). Maybe that’s why I love them so much … I can identify with their premise. Where deep down I frequently dream of being a modern day Maximus of ‘Gladiator,’ who single-handedly defies an evil emperor and changes the world for the better; I often feel the most alive when I am able to add zest to life’s little idiosyncrasies. Think J.D. or Turk from ‘Scrubs.’

The problem with always thinking big is that in the midst of epic dreams and grand plans, details are frequently forgotten and left unaccounted for. In other words, as is so often the case in life, because we may not think our experiences measure up to that of a big, Oscar-winning narrative, we get depressed and miss out on what could be an Emmy-winning snapshot of life instead. I don’t know about you, but for me, 22 minutes and endless syndication of what I hope will be a memorable life sounds pretty good.

Friday. Black Friday. The first Black Friday that I never went shopping on. I’m actually shocked

Friday. Black Friday. The first Black Friday that I never went shopping on. I’m actually shocked myself. I guess you could say I was a little depressed a little about it all. I really like and enjoy my traditions and now I feel that they are getting changed on me. I really am a creature of habit and anytime my habits get changed I feel a little upset about it. I think my wife sees them as a way to “change” me, but I see it as another part of my life that isn’t the same anymore. I knew I would grow up at some point in time, I just thought it would be on my terms not someone else’s. So, I was lazy today as well. Heather and I did not get out of bed until about ten o’clock again. We were lazy and watched two episodes of “Frasier” while we sat around and ended up being lazy for a little bit. Then we went about doing things on our own. I went downstairs and watched the original “V” TV series. I did that most of the day. Around noon or so, we all ate some lunch and then Heather left for a bus run.

Then entire afternoon the kids watched “V” with me. We watched “V” and “V: The Final Battle” on DVDs and I worked on my clone trooper helmet. I thought I would be farther along with the helmet by now, but it’s slow going. That’s okay, I would rather go slow and get it right. I was now into the phase where I was dremmeling the bondo and also sanding and sanding some more. I was then filling and sanding more again. I put a lot of work into the helmet as we watched “V” on TV.

Okay, so let’s talk about Part 1 of Chapter 20 of “Star Wars – Medstar I: Battle Surgeons, A Clone Wars Novel” by Michael Reaves and Steve Perry…..Chapter 20 (Part 1): Jos had hoped that Klo Merit would clarify his thoughts about the clones, but instead was making his thoughts even cloudier now. Jos asked what he meant by the word expertise. Merit suggested that Jos could learn a lot just by listening to his patients. merit asked aoubt his ring and said it was firestone, but he did not know much more unless it was a kidney stone. But Klo pointed out that he had some prior knowledge about the stone as he knew what it was, but wasn’t expert enough to know it was a Gallian firestone. So Jos said he is now educated about gem stones, but Klo said he wasn’t. He didn’t know about the black hue and where it came from nor did he know about the curse on a black firestone. But he explained they are supposed to be unlucky but that was trumped up by diamond merchants who were losing money to firestones. Then Merit pointed out that Jos is no an expert on clones because he has not tried to be one. He treats their physical ailments but does not understand their psychology. But Klo Merit pointed out that clones are not the only things he doesn’t think very highly of. Merit asks about his thoughts on droids and Jos says they are just machines. Klo pointed out that they think and interact. He asked Jos if he ever met a droid that was self-aware. But Jos tried to counter by saying they can’t feel pain and they don’t reproduce until Klo Merit pointed out that he’s had human patients wiht the same problems. Merit said he’s not saying that droids are alive but that self-aware droids definetly are more real than a dumb-bot that builds landspeeders. Jos said this is not helping because he was just wrappng his head around the idea that clones are people and now droids may be too? Merit said there are never easy answers and that he will need to figure things out on your own. Merit says that’s how the galaxy works and then pointed out their time was up……

5. 30 Rock
Twee woorden: Tracy Morgan. Nog twee: Alec Baldwin. Laatste dan: zap.

4. Californication
David Duchovny speelt zichzelf. Big deal.

3. Entourage

Laat me niet lachen. Letterlijk. En waarom iedere aflevering weer een nieuw liefje? En altijd zo overduidelijk out of his league. Totaal ongeloofwaardig.

Wednesday. The first day of the week without students. I was happy to finally be on some sort of v

Wednesday. The first day of the week without students. I was happy to finally be on some sort of vacation. And I’ll admit that I will treat it as such. I got up this morning around nine o’clock or so and watched “Dr. Phil” on T.V. and then decided to watch “Frasier” with Heather for a little bit. We did talk about some good news that we found out yesterday. We have a debt consolidation company that is going to help us with our predicament with my wage garnishment. They are going to cover my loan with Citi Financial, our student loans and a few other loans all in one payment that will cost less than my wage is getting garnished for. That will help IMMENSLY! One discussion with a lawyer proved to be worth it’s weight in gold. As a matter of fact, according to the company, my wage garnishment should come off in my next paycheck. It will also help to keep my tax return from getting taken in January, if I have one that is. The way Obama is spending my money, I probably won’t have one!

I decided that although I’m not a huge fan of the “Twilight” series, my daughter is and I thought it was only fair to take her to go see “Full Moon”. So, we left before we ate lunch and went there and saw an eleven a.m. showing of the movie. We got home and I started to play “Call of Duty 4” online for about two hours before walking away because I didn’t want to get too addicted. Which I pretty much am anyway so I decided to get to work on my clone trooper helmet. I have so much to do on that helmet, it’s not even funny! I started to bondo some more seams and worked on trying to finally seal in the helmet. I got most of the seams done today. Hopefully, I will be able to get a majority of it done by the end of the weekend. My goal is to have it done by the time Christmas vacation is over and then save my pennies and get some clone armor and start to put the whole thing together. I got done working on the helmet and then decided to play some more of “Call of Duty 4”. After a while, Heather told me that the mechanic that was going to help us with the car wanted the car. So we raced out to Sanitaria Springs and dropped the car off with the mechanic. On our way back to the house, he let us know that he needed to replace the axles on the car and that would run us another two-hundred dollars or so. So, we told him to do it and reached deeper into our pockets. But, it was still cheaper to do it with this guy than deal with a shop.

We got home and ate some late dinner and then watched “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air” and “The Office” and then had to go back out and pick up the car. It sounds and seems to run much better than it did before. Definetly no squeaking noises coming out of the car when I stop now. We came home and I then played “Call of Duty 4” for about another half hour and then watched our usual TV shows for the night including “Old Christine”, “Garry Unmarried”, “Glee”, and “CSI NY” and then went to bed.

Okay, so let’s talk about Part 2 of Chapter 19 of “Star Wars – Medstar I: Battle Surgeons, A Clone Wars Novel” by Michael Reaves and Steve Perry…..Chapter 19 (Part 2): As Barriss headed back to the medical ward, she passed by a trooper that was starring at a wall and she had treated him earlier so she asked CT nine-one-four why he was here. He was in perfect health and had been discharged. The trooper explained that one of his mates, trooper CT nine-one-five was still in surgery. Jos then cut in and said that trooper didn’t make it. The soldier said that loss of his fellow trooper was unfortunate, but Barriss felt that the trooper felt a large loss and a huge amount of grief. But Jos sensed something was wrong and asked CT-914 if he knew the soldier. 914 said he thought of him as a brother, but Jos pointed out that they were all brothers and the clone thanked the doctor for his work and left. Jos looked at Barriss and said if he did not know better he would’ve thought that trooper was upset. Barriss asked Jos if he would be upset with losing a brother. But Jos said that those connections are taken out with the clone breeding. Barriss said that they may be cloned but they are still living, breathing beings that have the ability to think and feel. She told Jos that th clone was upset and that although they were bred for war, even Jos felt that CT nine-one-four was grieving ove the loss of a brother. She said that it obviously never occured to him and that doctors have horrible bedside manner and Jos stood there stumped at what he heard. That’s when Barriss realized that she had the aide of The Force and she apologized, but Jos gave a fake smile and left……

So somehow I managed it again: I haven’t blogged since Oct. 27., in which I declared that I had ended my pattern of not blogging for a month. Hmm. Well, at least this time my defense is better than blogger’s block-midterms. So I apologize for the lack of updating and commenting-but be prepared now, for I’m about to update to the umpteenth degree!

What’s happened since Halloween weekend? Quite a lot, as you could imagine. Let’s see how much I can catch you all up on.

I didn’t actually go out on Halloween (I had been planning on being Audrey Hepburn)-I stayed in and worked on a 1500 essay due Monday for my honors seminar. But I had quite a lot of fun listening to the drunk people on the street below, and getting frozen yogurt with different groups of people wandering in and out of the dorm. It ended up being a pretty nice weekend, even though I was writing a paper. (More proof that being sober can be just as hilarious as being drunk. And cleaner.)

…Since I started this draft It’s actually been quite a while. So, now my memory only stretches back to a few weeks. This is an abridged update. Goodness, I’ve gotten horrible at this!

I went ice-skating for the first time a few weeks ago, while baby-sitting two girls, 11 and 8. I did a few laps around the rink, holding onto the edge very firmly, and almost fell several different times. Those times I almost fell were a bit epic—I’d lose control of my skates, fall backward and forward, and then collapse on the wall, and laugh at myself as I kept going. Near the end I could manage to get around better, but I was done after 7 to 8 laps. The girls themselves were pretty sweet, and utterly fascinated with my iPhone. I’m not quite sure which they liked better-me or my phone.

Midterms have come and gone, and I’ve gotten almost all of them back. I didn’t do as well as I would’ve liked, but am happy with my grades.

I love the area around Madison Square Park. (Not the same thing as Madison Square Gardens.) My chiropractor is located a few blocks from the park, and that’s where the subway station comes out. The buildings are just so beautiful, and the park is so relaxing. I’m also lucky in my choice of chiropractor (Dr. Tammy Bohne), who was a great find, and the first person I went to see.

This last weekend we (meaning eight people from my floor) also took my roommate Traci out for her 18th birthday to the Carlyle Café, located in the Carlyle Hotel. Very, very fancy. Very expensive. We laughed at our own awkwardness quite a bit-there was a general confusion between salad forks, dinner forks, and which spoon to use. I think we hid it from the waiters walking around as best we could. The food was really excellent-I even split some steak tartar with my friend Kelly. The only disappointing thing was the crème brulee. When Traci, who had never eaten it before, went to crack the top, it was soft. No crack, or crunch (and half the reason I would order a creme brulee is just for that)! However as Frasier and Niles would say, the only thing better than an exquisite meal, is an exquisite meal with one flaw you can pick at all evening long.

We walked around uptown for a while after that, wandering down from 76th St to 59th. It is so beautiful up there, so clean, and so grand. I love Greenwich Village and all its nooks and crannies, but the Upper West and East sides are simply gorgeous. We looked into all the little (and incredibly expensive) boutiques lining the streets. Eventually we reached Bergdorf’s, where we wandered through ALL SEVEN FLOORS. It doesn’t really matter if you don’t like high end clothes-go for the designs, the architecture, and how pretty that store is. The floor that’s entirely for evening gowns is just plain disorientating. There are mirrors and hallways everywhere leading in loops-you could get lost! It was, however, one of the prettiest floors I saw (excepting the Christmas area). And one of the craziest things is, this building is entirely for women’s clothing. The men’s building is across the street.

This week so far has just been a huge effort on my part not to mentally check out of my classes before Thanksgiving break. This is the first break we’ve had since we started school on the 8th, and everyone around me can only think about Thanksgiving. And I have a test tomorrow in Russian!

So, I’ll end this blog post with good wishes for those of you reading this. I hope you have a lovely Thanksgiving, and enjoy your holiday. Send me good thoughts in New York, since I can’t go back to Seattle for the weekend. However, it just makes me even more excited to come home for Christmas break!

“Garden of Darkness” by Anne Frasier is a chilling atmospheric tale of horror. This follow-up to “Pale Immortal” should please fans and new readers alike. According to the legend of the Pale Immortal a vampire built the town of Old Tuonela. Is it a hoax or are dark forces really at work?

In Tuonela, Wisconsin the exhumed body of Richard Manchester, a suspected vampire known as the Pale Immortal, is put on display. His remains are drawing visitors from across the country. When a tourist disappears the mayor tries to down play the publicity. Meanwhile the medical examiner, Rachel Burton, is packed up and anxious to leave town. Pregnant and betrayed by the man she loves she wants to move on before her baby is born. The chief of police stops her and begs her to stay to help with a case. Although she wants to protect her baby from any evil doing in the town, she feels compelled to stay when he tells her the skinned body of a tourist was found. She knows it wasn’t done by an animal. Time proves her right and the prime suspect turns out to be her former lover. She’s determined to forget Evan and focus on the case. But as more bodies are discovered and Evan’s behavior becomes more irrational she fears he may really be the killer.

This is a great story but I wish I had read “Pale Immortal” first. As soon as I picked up on some of the back history I was hooked. I love the ghost town setting and the mix of characters. The haunted town of Tuonela provides the perfect backdrop for paranormal suspense and shocking revelations. Switching Point Of View is often confusing, but in this story it works. Grab a yourself a copy of “Pale Immortal” then read “Garden of Darkness” for the heart pounding climax.
Deep Sea Martini

Monday, November 16, 2009
Eat My Martini

Like Sue’s omnipresent comment, I’m not sure why either of these cocktails has the name that they do. The Deep Sea Martini is 6 parts gin, 2 parts dry vermouth, 1/2 teaspoon Pernod, 1 dash orange bitters. Now I will confess, after enough experiences thus far with Pernod (and all of them unpleasant or at least less than desirable), I did use slightly less Pernod. Maybe if I’d used the full compliment, this drink would have been a bright yellow … but probably not. It wasn’t THAT much less. And anyway, I have no desire to have my martini looking like a radioactive urine sample. After the previous experience with a very un-dry martini, I also cut back on the vermouth for this by about 25%. Drink ended up being a pale yellow with a hint of orange from the bitters – and actually, it wasn’t half-bad! Probably the first time you’ll hear me say that about any drink including Pernod. Possibly the last. We’ll see. It looked a little naked with no garnish, maybe an elusive lemon twist would have served that purpose, but it didn’t really need one, to be honest. I liked this – I think I’ve hit on the right amount of Pernod to use to accentuate but not overpower, at least in my book. 3.75 stars for this – not quite a 4 star but it is close, and if you like the taste of licorice or just the hint of it, give this a try.

My next martini for the evening was titled, “Eat My Martini”. Mind you, this has nothing to do with the Devil, I was just looking for a catchy blog title. This cocktail consists of 6 parts honey vodka, 1 part amontillado sherry, and an almond-stuffed olive. Hooray for the fact that I found that honey vodka recently, I think it’s going to be getting a workout. Now I’ve never really consumed sherry before (as a drink), to my knowledge – I’ve used it a few times in cooking but that’s about it. I do like port, so I was curious if these two were similar. While searching for the amontillado sherry in BevMo, I happened upon one half of a pair of what I gathered were two good-looking older brothers taking their wheelchair-bound Mom out for a shopping excursion. Well, they were either brothers are the two halves of a gay couple with somebody’s Mom. I preferred the former interpretation, not that I’m in the market myself but, hey, a girl still likes to look, and anybody who has a Mom who wants an outing to BevMo to buy booze can’t be all bad, right? Anyway, the non-wheelchair-pushing gentleman was pondering the sherry section, and as I stepped up and started looking for Amontillado, he asked me rather conversationally if I knew anything about sherry. I admitted I didn’t, that I’d only bought it for the occasional recipe (and can’t even remember which recipes or if they turned out any good, for that matter), and that I tended to drink port. I said I was looking for the Amontillado for a martini recipe (I found it). He went on to say that he’d been watching a lot of reruns of Frasier on TV and was struck by how often Frasier and Niles seemed to enjoy a sherry after dinner, so he decided it was something he wanted to try out. Thinking of my earlier curiosity as to whether he was there with his brother or his partner, I was tempted to ask if he felt more in common with Kelsey Grammer or David Hyde Pierce, but I figured that was a little obvious. Then it occurred to me that if a TV show was what inspired you to drink something (as opposed to, say, a real person that you actually know recommending it to you), well, that kind of says something about a person to me. (Thanks to Bill Sledzik’s “Tough Sledding” blog for the photo here.) I got my Amontillado sherry and wished him the best of luck with his sherry explorations.

Back at home, I mixed this one up after I finished the Deep Sea. It was a nice, refreshing contrast, and although I didn’t sample the sherry directly, I would note that it does remind me a lot of port, which is a good thing. If you had told me I might like it in a martini with honey vodka a few weeks ago, however, I would have said you had bats in your belfry. But, in the same vein as the California martini (vodka and red wine), this was very worthy. It had the deep sweetness of a dessert wine thinned out with a softened honey vodka, and of course, the almond-stuffed olive having been soaked in it by the end of the drink is simply delicious. 4.25 stars for this one, I would definitely have it again, or perhaps try the Armada Martini from Sue’s posting of a couple weeks back, which was also vodka with amontillado sherry. I think I read that amontillado sherry is best kept refrigerated and for no more than two weeks, so I had better get busy on that goal!

Cheers,
Cathy

HAPPY VETERAN’S DAY!! I want to take a minute right now and let all the vetaran’s out there know just how much I appreciate that you have done for our country. I know and understand that all veterans of this country have made the ultimate sacrifice of giving your life on the line that I may have my freedom. I respect and hold a high respect for all of you no matter what war you have fought in and in what way you fought. You ARE the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Okay, so I had a day off from work today and I made as much use of that as I could. I got up around eight o’clock this morning because Tara kept coming in and annoying Heather and I till we finally woke up. I got up and headed downstairs along with Heather. She worked on some jackets for Marsha and I worked on music videos for my classroom. I continued to do that while I watched “The Early Show”, “Dr. Phil”, and two episodes of “Frasier”. I got done with that and went upstairs to take a shower. After my shower, I came back downstairs and did some work on my clone helmet and did more work on the music videos. I got done with that and Heather and I ate some lunch together. She got the kids ready for the Veteran’s Day Parade and I then went downstairs and did some more work. They left for the parade and I took a nap and then watched the movie “Cloverfield”.

On that subject, I really did NOT like the movie “Cloverfield”. It was an ineresting concept having the movie shot from the angle of the victims in a situation like that. However, I did not enjoy the movie that much. The camera angles were annoying, it made you sea sick with the camera moving around as much as it did, and then the ending. I HATED the way it ended. Let me rephrase that, the movie didn’t end! It just stopped. Horrible! NEVER go see this movie. You will want your two hours back!

Okay, so I got done watching “Cloverfield” and Heather came home. We then went out to Aldi’s to get some things for dinner and came home. I went to the basement and worked on this blog for about two hours (had a LOT to get caught up) and then ate dinner with the family. I worked a majority of the night on the blog taking an occasional break to play “Call of Duty 4″ on the PS3. Once my usual T.V. shows came on, I started watching those including “Garry Unmarried”, “Glee”, and “CSI NY”. I then went to bed with Heather.

Okay, so let’s talk about Part 1 of Chapter 15 of “Star Wars – Medstar I: Battle Surgeons, A Clone Wars Novel” by Michael Reaves and Steve Perry…..Chapter 15 (Part 1): Getting rid of a body on a Medstar would have been easy. Split the body up into pieces using a vibroblade, put it into a liquid-proof bag, and then put it into the trash that would eventually end up in space. But Bleyd kenw the Black Sun would automatically point fingers at him, and rightfully so. Bleyd was stuck though because he coulnd’t ask for help from anyone because they were either agents of The Republic or were not able to be trusted. He had to do this himself. But he ahd to come up with a plan in advance. He treated the wounds that he received because Mathal nailed him with the knife. He had two long cuts on his right forearm, but with the application of some synthflesh, he was able to partially heal it. Then Bleyd put Mathal’s body into a carbon freezing chamber and marked the block as carrying harvesting enzyme converters. He then moved the entire block to the aft cargo hold’s trash lock. He could’ve sen the body to a chemical storage warehouse, but the body was of no consequence. Instead, he had to focus on the cover story and that was the concept that the agent left his ship voluntarily and then was attacked in space and had his ship blown apart. But the next part of his plan required him to disguise himself because everyone knew who Admiral Bleyd was no his own ship. he had considered this and headed back to his quarters. He put on a long white robe that had a veil that completely covered his face. His robe was identical to those of a group on every large ship called The Silent that helped to aid the sick and injured. A few days ago, Bleyd had put microtransmitters into the flood fo the other members of the Silent on his ship so he could track them to make sure he did not run into them…..

After last weeks blockbuster events things have cooled off dramatically, and the main focus of the last five episodes seems to have been Sunny. I don’t understand why Sunny is a character in the first place, I know Neighbours are fond of pointless characters but she’s up there with the greats (Ty, Ned, Taj). This week she got scared about having to dance at the ball and decided to attempt to sabotage it. Selfish bitch. Donna rightly fell out with her but then once she saw how shit she is at dancing she forgave her. Forgiveness was not the route to take, personally I would have broken both her legs to teach her a lesson.

Donna had a big week too, meeting someone who’s claiming to be her brother. He was introduced to the viewer as a man talking about coffee to a 9-year-old girl. Sadly they didn’t go down the peadophilia route (come on, it would have been entertaining), but he is likely to be some sort of INTERNET PERVERT. As we all know everyone that uses the internet has evil intentions and if you ever meet someone from the internet you will end up in a series of wheelie bins or a shallow grave in the woods. Pervert or not, Donna’s brother (whose name escapes me) is a bit of a dick.

Crazy Zeke continued his crazy in dramatic style, forcing Dr Karl to go rafting with him, on clearly highly dangerous waters that definitely weren’t completely tame and still in any way. We also saw the return of the radio station, and a fantastic ‘Ask Dr Karl’ on-air session. He even used the words ‘I’m listening’. A low-rent Aussie version of Frasier, just what we need. In fact, it fits quite well…

Frasier – Dr Karl (both doctors, both help people- Frasier with his radio show and Dr Karl with his awesome advice column, both petty and prone to embarrassing incidents)

Niles – Zeke (both crazy, both with serious bouts of OCD, both with partners (Maris, obviously, not Daphne) who somehow surpass them in the crazy-stakes)

Daphne – Sunny (mental foreigners)

Martin – Susan (wise cracking and disabled)

Roz – Ringo (okay, so the only other person in the Kennedy household didn’t quite fit the bill… lets just say that Ringo has sex with a LOT of men)

Finally, the episode sequence has changed, and I don’t like it. It used to be ‘recap – titles – episode – credits’ but now it’s ‘COMING UP THIS WEEK ON NEIGHBOURS (if it’s a Monday episode) – titles – recap – episode – next time on Neighbours – credits’. Talk about over-complicating things. I don’t really want to see clips of future episodes, I prefer to remain spoiler free, and now you can’t whizz through the recap because you can’t tell where the actual episode starts. Neighbours is pretty linear, I’m sure I could cope without any recaps whatsoever.

Dealing with Funny Business

Four years ago, television insiders were rocked by a fear that the half-hour comedy genre was on its final legs. The field that was once defined by “I Love Lucy,” “Three’s Company” and “Cheers” could not hold an audience. Take, for example, the case of NBC’s powerhouse block of “Must See TV” Thursday. This block defined sitcoms for the latter half of the ‘90s, thanks to hits such as “Friends,” “Seinfeld,” “Just Shoot Me,” “Frasier” and “Will and Grace.” Once “Friends” and “Seinfeld” ended in 2004 and “Will and Grace” signed off in 2006, however, multi-camera comedies – those taped in front of a studio audience – were suddenly endangered. CBS had launched the moderately successful “Two and a Half Men” in 2003; for the next six years, this would be one of only two multi-camera comedies to make it past three seasons.

With the demise of the multi-camera comedy, luckily, came the rise of the single-camera bracket. Single-camera comedies usually don’t use laugh tracks. The humor is portrayed more subtly and the cameramen have a longer creative rope to zoom in and out and experiment with angles. Popular examples of multi-camera comedies are “The Office,” “Arrested Development” and “Malcolm in the Middle.” While critics love this genre, the broader audience historically does not, hence the cancellation of “Arrested Development” despite its strong cult following. It used to be that networks needed more patience with multi-camera comedies. Whereas single-camera sitcoms either found audiences quickly or not at all, multi-cameras’ greatest strength was word of mouth, and this required time. This fall season, however, is changing all the rules.

2008 entry “The Big Bang Theory” regenerated America’s love of comedy, and this season ABC has miraculously managed to launch a successful two-hour comedy block. While The CW eliminated comedy from its primetime schedule altogether, it’s undoubtedly a strong field for the other networks. So, which honeys bring the funny and which has-beens are wearing thin?

“She doesn’t even know I exist.”

If you’ve never heard of a TV show, it’s understandable. But if Doc Sonya has barely heard about it, you know it’s bad.

Brothers
It’s a new comedy on Fox. Comes on during what TV insiders so fondly refer to as “the Friday night death slot.” The network obviously doesn’t want it to succeed, so why should you?

‘Til Death
This show is still on? Really??

Time to Break Up With…

Two and a Half Men
Why do I feel so revolted by “Two and a Half Men”? It’s not the fact that it’s a “dude” comedy that objectifies women; I actually couldn’t care less about that. My dislike probably stems from “Men’s” lack of comedic class – neither the crude jokes nor the scenes in bed nor the dialogue is refined. There’s a little something called taste, and “Men” leaves one in your mouth comparable to vinegar.Bottom Line: It’s sad that this is still one of the highest rated comedies in primetime.

Accidentally on Purpose
On par with “Two and a Half Men,” this tired concept should never have made it to the air in the first place. “Dharma & Greg”’s Jenna Elfman is wasted here as the “cougar” who gets knocked up by a twenty-something dude. Unfunny dialogue and stereotypical guy humor ensue (if the writers want to discover the proper execution of guy humor, they should watch “The Hangover”).Bottom Line: Bor-ing. Turn off the TV after “How I Met Your Mother” airs.

One-Night Stands:

Ultimately forgettable, but momentarily entertaining.

Ugly Betty
I loved “Ugly Betty” when it premiered as a bright, quirky comedy in 2006. Much like “Heroes,” however, “Betty” fell into a sophomore slump and has since reached only mediocrity. The show now lacks the charm and whimsy that made it so delightful during its first season.Bottom Line: While Daniel has no memorable storyline to speak of and Betty’s romantic entanglements are dull and repetitive, Wilhelmina, Marc and Amanda continue to bring the inspired comedy the show sought its first season. Dump the other characters and give these three their own show.

Gary Unmarrried
Another uninspired comedy on CBS’ schedule. While “Gary” is certainly more refined than “Men” and “Accidentally on Purpose,” it’s hardly a superior selection. It easily identifies with other marginally successful dad-centered comedies of past years: “The War at Home,” “According to Jim” and “Yes, Dear” come to mind.Bottom Line: Americans have proven that there is indeed an audience for these sub-par shows, and they thus continue to survive. Why not try something saucier, though?

Casual Dating:

“You’re pretty funny. Plus, you paid for dinner. I guess we can go out again.”

The Middle
“The Middle” centers on the Hecks, a middle-class family in Indiana. While Patricia Heaton is the star, funnyman Neil Flynn, who previously played the Janitor on “Scrubs,” is my reason for watching. I’d say “The Middle” could be appointment TV, but with so many satisfying comedies out there, a girl can only watch so much.Bottom Line: Reminiscent of “Malcolm in the Middle,” “The Middle” demonstrates how mixing kooky with funny plus a tinge of heartfelt emotion makes for an entertaining half-hour.

Cougar Town
I’m sure you’ve heard of this Courtney Cox show. Question is, is it any good? Answer: Eh… “Cougar Town” tries for the laughs a smidge too hard, and the slapstick bits don’t quite fit in with today’s comedy demands. However, there’s no denying Cox’s charm, and as son Travis, Dan Byrd’s downplayed comedic timing reminds me of Michael Cera’s spot-on underacting on “Arrested Development.”Bottom Line: Not a bad show, but not a standout, either.

The New Adventures of Old Christine
Julia Louis-Dreyfus of “Seinfeld” fame plays Christine, a divorced mom who runs a gym. Her sidekick is the hilarious Wanda Sykes. I’m going to be honest with you: I’ve never seen this show. It’s shameful, because there’s no real excuse for it. But I’m going to endorse it because everyone who’s ever seen this show loves it. Plus, it comes with a top recommendation from my brother, and I’m OK with trusting Doc Sunny on this one.Bottom Line: Whether I’ve seen it or not, this show has Wanda Sykes. Come on, people, watch it. She’s quite possibly one of the funniest comedians ever.

Long Term Dating:

Comedy depends so much on personal preference, so it’s hard to figure out which shows to hate on and which to brag about. But the following are keepers. Girl Scout’s honor.

How I Met Your Mother
This year has been a breakout year for “Mother” scene-stealer Neil Patrick Harris. The guy starred in Joss Whedon’s online saga “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.” He finally hosted an episode of “Saturday Night Live,” as well as the Tony Awards and the Emmy Awards, and he garnered an Emmy nomination himself for his work on “mother.” Folks, Doogie Howser has grown up. But Harris, as legendary/awesome playboy Barney Stinson, is only one element that makes “How I Met Your Mother” so fantastic. The ensemble cast includes Alyson Hannigan (“Buffy”! “American Pie”!); Josh Radnor; Cobie Smulders; and Jason Segel, who you probably know as “that guy” from “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” “I Love You, Man,” and “Knocked Up.” Together, these five comedians bring us the multi-camera, next generation version of “Friends.” These friends live in NYC, hang out in MacLaren’s Bar (sorry, Central Perk), and make bold use of flashbacks to bring us one of the most subtly entertaining comedies we’ve seen in years.

Bottom Line: “It’s gonna be legen… wait for it… and I hope you’re not lactose intolerant, because the second half of that word is dairy!”-Barney, “How I Met Your Mother”

The Big Bang Theory
You’ve probably at some point (quietly) laughed at a nerd for something he or she said. “The Big Bang Theory” thankfully allows us to laugh at nerds loudly and proudly, thanks to a stock of sitcom characters who are nutty, naïve and endearingly neurotic. Good for a laugh are Raj Koothrappali, an Indian stereotype with a thick accent, bad dress sense and the inability to speak in front of women; Howard Wolowitz, a short Jewish man who dresses in bold colors and will do anything to be with a woman; and Leonard and Penny, the two characters we can most easily relate to.

Jim Parsons, however, steals the show as Sheldon Cooper, Leonard’s socially awkward physicist roommate who neurotically must eat at the same restaurant every night, depending on which day of the week it is, cannot discern sarcasm and always settles a dispute with a good round of Rock-Paper-Scissors-Lizard-Spock: “Scissors cuts paper, paper covers rock, rock crushes lizard, lizard poisons Spock, Spock smashes scissors, scissors decapitates lizard, lizard eats paper, paper disproves Spock, Spock vaporizes rock…

Bottom Line: …and as it always has, rock crushes scissors.”

Modern Family
ABC’s breakout comedy follows three families, related in some way or another, over the course of their daily activities. Sound dull? It could be, except “Modern Family” is the first show to successfully mix elements of multi-camera and single-camera comedies, so along with the blatantly hilarious lines, there’s a slew of dialogue so witty that one can’t help but laugh. My favorite part is Ty Burrell as Phil, whose over-the-top attempts at being the “cool” dad mock everything our generation is about. With possibly the most laugh-out-loud moments of any comedy on TV right now, you’re doing yourself a disservice by not watching.Bottom Line: “I’m a cool dad, that’s my thang. I’m hip, I surf the web, I text. LOL: laugh out loud, OMG: oh my god, WTF: why the face.” (cut to Phil doing the dance to “High School Musical’s” “We’re All in this Together.”)

Glee
I’m sure you’ve heard of “Glee” by now, what with its musical numbers ripping up the iTunes chart week after week. Combining America’s love for undiscovered talent with nutty plotlines and distinctive high school personalities, “Glee” is broadcast television’s scripted answer to reality TV. What I like best about “Glee” is that it’s not a show focused on singing. It’s a character-centered dramedy with musical numbers sprinkled in. While the story about Will’s wife Terri pretending to be pregnant is frustrating, Jane Lynch’s portrayal of maniacal cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester more than makes up for it.Bottom Line: “I’ll often yell at homeless people, ‘Hey, how’s that homelessness working out for you? Give not being homeless a try!’” -Sue, explaining that people should be motivated to better themselves.

Community / Parks & Recreation / The Office / 30 Rock
Like I said, NBC’s “Must See TV” Thursday was the place to be in the ‘90s, and its revamped “Comedy Night Done Right” is no different. Each of these multi-camera comedies not only defines but also glorifies the genre. There’s no need to expound on “The Office”; I’m sure every college student has seen it at least once (“that’s what she said!”).“30 Rock” isn’t as popular, but it really should be. Every character is a standout. My favorite is Alec Baldwin as Jack Donaghy, VP of East Coast Television for NBC (probably because I want his job one day). “30 Rock” never hesitates to mock NBC or television or politics or anything else for that matter. Not only is “30 Rock” bold, it is also smart, never insulting the audience or throwing jokes in our face. Much of the humor isn’t in the dialogue – it’s visual (just when Jack says “I need your guidance” and reaches for a picture of Jesus on his desk, he picks up the one behind Jesus… of Nixon.)

Parks & Recreation
When Amy Poehler vehicle “Parks & Rec” debuted last year, it was shaky at best: the scripts weren’t quite funny and the acting was too forced. This season, however, the show has found its legs. Sometime, when America quit watching, “Parks & Rec” got funny. Poehler’s grown into her role, and the standout cast of supporting players now receives the emphasis it deserves.

Community

“Community” is the 2009 entry into NBC’s Thursday night comedy line-up, and if its ratings hold (or grow!), it will round-out the comedy block perfectly for years to come. Like the other comedies, “Community”’s greatest strength is the ensemble cast, led by “The Soup”’s Joel McHale, as manipulative lawyer Jeff who’s back in community college because it was finally discovered that his degree came not from Columbia University, but Colombia, South America. This show is, I kid you not, hilarious. The best comedic pairing is undoubtedly Abed and Troy, and the executive producers have realized this: they now dedicate the final thirty seconds of each episode to an Abed-Troy gimmick, be it rapping in Spanish, taking over the school’s PA system or talking in a Batman growl.

Bottom Lines:
“How long have you known about the pregnancy? A week? A month? A year?” –Michael Scott, “The Office”

“I haven’t had this much trouble with a book since “Where’s Waldo” went to that barber pole factory.” -Tracy, “30 Rock”

“Whenever Leslie asks me for the Latin names of any of our plants, I just give her the names of rappers.” -Tom, “Parks & Recreation”

“Our first assignment is to make a documentary. They’re like movies, but with ugly people.” -Abed, “Community”

I’ve always had difficulty getting up in the mornings, and casting my mind back I don’t think I’ve been on time for anything since 2003, when I was in 3rd year at Culloden Academy and realised I could get away with being five minutes late every morning without any repercussions.

But today I made it to shorthand 5 minutes early. Here’s how:

1. Set 4 alarms on mobile phone, for 6:00am, 6:01am, 6:02am, 6:05am

2. Set 5th alarm for 8.20am – this is in case of emergency, and the last point that I could expect to get up and have a shower before class

3. Place mobile phone in rucksack on opposite side of room to ensure that you have to get out of bed to turn phone off

4. Place kettle next to bed with just enough water to fill a cup of tea

5. Kick kettle over, save laptop from wave, soak up mess with towel and refill kettle. Lesson learnt.

6. Place a cup next to your bed, with a teabag in it, and a small container with a spoon nearby for used teabag

7. Have sausages in fridge as incentive for doing well.

8. Go to sleep.

Wake up in the morning, irritating alarm noise, fumble about in darkness, find phone, curse the bastard that set alarm for 6:00am, reset for 6:30am BUT turn light on, turn radio on, turn kettle on, pour cup of tea, spend half an hour lying awake as radio/tea gradually makes you fully compus mentus!

Get up, make sausages, have another cup of tea and juice, have a shower, watch news, go over some uni work, play mariokart for half an hour, watch Frasier, and viola!!! Off to uni well rested, well fed, well entertained, prepared for the day!

The test, of course, will be whether I can do this tomorrow or not!

Dunque, io sono uno di quegli sfortunati che sei giorni su sette si devono svegliare alle 6:10 per uscire di casa senza troppi traumi alle 7. Dieci minuti di informazione come piace a me.

I’ll admit I was skeptical when CBS announced Craig Ferguson as the new host of The Late Late Show a few years ago.

Mr. Wick?

From The Drew Carey Show?

The fey Scotish guy?

Really?

Okay.

It didn’t help that our local CBS affiliate pushed the show back half an hour to air Frasier reruns and now continues the trend with Jeopardy.

Then a strange thing happened. I’d catch bits and pieces of the show and to my surprise, Ferguson was really good. His rambling monologues and mugging for the camera worked.

I became a fan.

Then, last night, Ferguson aired what may be his magnum opus.

First thing that comes to my head when I think Seattle is the classic movie, Sleepless in Seattle. Second thing that comes to my head is rainy weather and coffee. Maybe that’s also partly because of another show, Frasier, coffee shops on a rainy day. None-the-less, Seattle is a great city to visit year round.

the city at night thanks to gsea.org

For the active and adventurous tourist, Seattle is a great place to explore your water based adventure side of you. Sailing, sea-kayaking, fishing, etc. For the tourists who want to explore the city more, the Space Needle is always a great option. The observation of the Space Needle is a whopping 520 feet up in the air, which gives you a breath-taking view of the city. (you can see the towering needle in the picture above) For more fun facts about the needle and further information about visiting the needle you can click the link below.

Fun facts & observation hours

Lastly, a great cultural tourist attraction is Pike Place Market. According to visitseattle.org, Pike Place Market is, “the granddaddy of farmers’ markets”. With hundreds of vendors, farmers, and businesses it’s a great place to walk around and soak up some Seattle culture and food.

I tripped over a copy of Moonstruck in the bargain bin at my media store the other day, and grabbed

I tripped over a copy of Moonstruck in the bargain bin at my media store the other day, and grabbed it, delighted. I loved the movie when it first came out although I have to admit that Nicholas Cage really doesn’t do it for me most of the time…especially lately. But for this movie, he really did.

I watched the movie the other night, and despite the movie being over twenty years old (made in 1987) and Cher’s hair being bigger than my thighs, it still works really well — the final scene is a killer in both emotions and laughs. John Mahoney (Frasier’s dad) gets a lovely cameo role in it that I’d completely forgotten about.

But the pulse pause moment is earlier when Ronny (Cage) is trying to convince Loretta (Cher) to come back to his apartment for the second night in a row. The dialogue in this scene is almost perfect. I’m going to try and get it down word for word:

Ronny

“You’re going to marry my brother…Why’d'you wanna sell your life short? Playing it safe’s just about the most dangerous thing a woman like you can do. I mean, you waited for the right man the first time. Why didn’t you wait for the right man again?

Loretta

Because he didn’t come.

Ronny.

I’m here.

Loretta

You’re late.

________________

The look on Cage’s face is priceless. It’s such a hair-on-the-back-of-the-neck-lifting moment.

Catch up with the movie yourself if you can. Quite apart from this one small, timeless romantic moment, the movie is a gem in scripting, characters, comedy and story. Cher won an acacemy for her role. It’s worth a look, if you’ve never seen it, and it’s worth a repeat, if it’s been a while for you. It has aged very well indeed.
