Here is what the new Freddy looks like.

In my opinion, I like it. It definitely looks like a real burnt victim. The new Freddy look is pretty creepy as well. The way the original Freddy should have been.

remember when the kids in your class came to school as Jason, the killer from the Friday the 13th movie serial, brandishing a plastic, red paint splattered butcher knife? Or Freddy Kreuger, complete with mask and razor glove? It sounds like those days are over. Usually, we’re against the overly sensitive rules society puts in place, like the participation trophy, but, maybe this isn’t such a bad idea. do we really need the kids to go to school with fake blood and pretend cutlery so they can play imaginary dismemberment?

5. THE ALIEN – Alien

From the moment this Alien is conceived by means of an alien face-plant and after its chest popping birth in Ripley Scott’s Sci-fi horror masterpiece, The Alien in the movie Alien, has become one of the most recognizable horror monsters of all time. From its stealth movements, long curving head and saliva pouring mouth, this monster has made movie-goers cringe for decades.

I place The Alien at number 5 because no other sci-fi horror monster comes close to magnitude and terror they have caused. The film sequels were highly successful and launched this unhuman being into classic status within the horror and sci-fi genres of film.

–

4. FREDDY KREUGER – Nightmare on Elm St.

Since, both Michael Myers and Leatherface are both human, you won’t see them on this list. But out of the two highly successful slasher-film monsters, Jason Voorhees and Freddy Kreuger, I had to choose the one that still makes me shutter with fear at his very sight.

Nightmare on Elm St. gave us one of horrors most iconic figures in Freddy Kreuger. Born out of the mind of Wes Craven, who claims he was inspired to create Kreuger from an experience as a boy looking out his window and seeing a man in a stripped sweater and fedora peering through his garbage that gave him nightmares, Kreuger has given plenty of nightmares to movie-goers for years now. Which, when you think about it, having a nightmare about Kreuger (seeing that he kills people in their dreams) is a terrifying experience. Despite the more comedic turn he took over the years, no one can disregard this burnt, knife wheeling monster his iconic status.

–

3. ZOMBIES (Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, etc.)

Scene from Romero’s 1978 Dawn of the Dead Since Romero introduced us to these flesh eating beings, Zombies became part of the horror genre. Constantly, movies about these trance walking duds with infinite appetites for human flesh are being made on film.

Recently the success of 28 Days Later and horror-comedies Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland, have put zombies back on the map. Personally, I don’t find zombies very frightening, but their cult-like status in the genre most be rewarded. The original zombie films by Romero will continue to be the scariest, but new filmmakers are finding more and more ways to revive this cult icon.

–

2. FRANKESTEIN’S MONSTER (KARLOFF)/DRACULA (LUGOSI)

We can argue that all the Universal Monsters from the 1930’s and 1940’s should be on this list, but Boris Karloff’s Frankenstein’s Monster and Bela Lugosi’s Dracula, are two of the most recognizable movie monsters of all time. Both of these monsters terrified audiences in 1931, giving birth to the main stream era of horror films. Lugosi’s powerful stare and Karloff’s incredible make-up made them instant symbols of horror movies. Their success gave birth to Universal Studios’ other monsters, like Lon Chaney Jr.’s Wolf Man and Karloff’s return to screen as the Mummy. An adaptation of H.G. Well’s “The Invisible Man” continued Universal’s rise. But both Karloff and Lugosi will forever remain the symbols of these iconic literary figures. The success of The Bride of Frankenstein only made Karloff and the Universal Monsters even more successful.

Today neither of these monsters seem all that scary. But taken in the context of the times they were released, these two monsters were at the top of the world – scaring audiences everywhere. They may not be accurate adaptations of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” but they have now become our first image of these fabled creatures.

–

1 BRUCE THE SHARK – JAWS

No other monster has continued to terrify us more than Bruce (bet you didn’t know that is what he was called on set). Spielberg’s Jaws, an adaptation of Peter Benchley’s novel of the same title, became a world-wide phenomenon in the summer of 1975. Although the movie is anything but the traditional dark, ominous horror films that are a staple of the genre, this bright, sunny classic made more people scream than ever before.

Till this day, people who see this film are afraid of going into the ocean. Admit it, that even today when you are wading through the murky shores of the Jersey shore or Martha’s Vineyard or wherever you may be, that you think about Bruce pulling you under and tearing you limb from limb. Let’s face it, shark attacks are real, despite the fact that something the size of Bruce with the mindset of solely eating humans probably doesn’t exist, a shark bite can still happen – and still do.

No matter what genre you put Jaws in, it is still one of my all-time favorite films. Spielberg’s ability to create a peachy, warm and sunny beach town with a horrifying monster lurking in it is a pure cinematic masterpiece. Over 30 years later no other shark movie has had the impact that Jaws has had. The other monsters on our list may scare us and may be unforgettable, but none of them can continue to scare movie-goers like the 25-foot great white shark named Bruce.

–

Honorable Mentions: Pinhead, The Candyman, Chucky, and Pennywise the Clown.

If you object to any of my picks please let me know. I love getting feedback as everyone will have a different interpretation of the best horror monsters. If you have your own lists of the 5 Greatest Horror Monsters please feel free to post them in your comment.

Nightmare On Elm Street has always been my favorite horror franchise. The concept is simple, and I never saw a reason they should have stopped cranking out Freddy movies. Unlike Jason Voorhees, whose talent was limited to lumbering around with something sharp, the world of ‘Elm Street’ is constantly changing based upon what people fear. In that sense, they need only a new setting and they can roll out all new, completely original nightmare sequences and never have to worry about lengthy setups; it’s a dream world. Anything goes.

This bugs me for a couple reasons. The first is that it seems that they simply lifted verbatim sequences from the series that were visually compelling; i.e. the glove in the bath tub, the girl being pulled to the ceiling, the high school turned boiler room. And there’s no need. It’s been over 15 years since the last Nightmare movie. Surely SOMETHING has happened during this time period that has stuck in the public psyche. I dunno, maybe like a school shooting, a tsunami, a terrorist attack, a couple wars, an entire fucking world of technology. Creepy glove guy walking down hallways with fire in the background isn’t just rehashed, it’s inexcusably lazy. They clearly have a budget. Do something visually intriguing. It’s not difficult.

The second is that the Freddy metaphor is one that is vastly universal as it tells the story of the mistakes in our past coming back to haunt us. True, the original series was just a teenage slasher flick where the backstory was more an explanation of the plot, but the idea is very compelling and I can’t believe that Bay & Co. will try to do anything with it other than take it at complete face value.

For fun, about six months ago I wrote a crappy treatment for something I called A NIGHTMARE AT FORT SILL. Six soldiers return home from Iraq to find they are hunted in their dreams by an innocent man whose life they destroyed at Abu-Ghraib. (Sort of a P.T.S.D. Jacob’s Ladder) Not the greatest premise in the world; but at least it was a host for atmosphere, metaphor, and imagery which is the essence of horror. My post-9/11 “nightmare” envisioned a crippled veteran trapped in a burning WTC where the Escher-like maze of hallways and stairwells prevented escape in his wheelchair. Or an Abu-Ghraib where hood-draped phantoms in orange jumpsuits administered interrogation questions in that non-discernable tongue that people in dreams always seem to speak in. Once again, I’m not saying I could serve up a story with the best of them, I’m just saying that at least there’s alternatives to simply tracing scenes from the first three films and re-shooting it with all-new ’spooky child’ singing.

I guess it really doesn’t matter. This film will make a pantload of money, and I have no doubt that Jackie Earl Haley’s performance will be well worth the cost of admission.

As remakes of classic horror films continue to flood local movie theaters, none of them have intriqued movie audiences more than the idea of a remaking Freddy Kreuger. Nightmare on Elm St. is easily one of the greatest horror films ever created from the mind of Wes Craven. This teen slasher flick seeped into our nightmares and made Freddy an instant horror icon.

However, as a horror enthusiast and like others of you out there, skeptism as to how good a remake of this film could be are running. What I do like about the recent teaser trailer, which was just released, is that the filmmakers went about bringing Freddy back to the dark, monster that he was in the first film, and avoiding the quirky comedic burned killer that he evolved into as the film series developed.

I’m also interested in if Jackie Earle Haley can make Freddy his own. Something I imagine is going to be very difficult to do.

Its hard to judge if this remake will be able to do what the original did. And I can’t image it creating one of horror’s most infamous death scenes (remember the girl getting dragged throughout her bedroom and being killed while her boyfriend watched), but we’ll just have to wait and see.

If recent remakes are an indication of what we can expect, I don’t expect a home run here.

Just in time for Halloween…

Welcome to Remake Radar, where we take on Hollywood’s penchant for remaking films for better or worse (which is most of the time). This month’s movie:

“A Nightmare on Elm Street” (1984)

Stars: John Saxon, Amanda Wyss, Heather Langenkamp, Jsu Garcia, Johnny Depp, and Robert Englund

Director: Wes Craven

Story: Nancy (Langenkamp), Tina (Wyss), and their friends are having nightmares involving a man with burnt skin wearing a glove that has razor blades attached to it. They find that their parents, years before, killed a local janitor they believed to be a child murderer. His name was Freddy Krueger (Englund). Now, Freddy’s back to exact revenge on the parents by killing their own sons and daughters in the world of dreams.

Of note, this was Johnny Depp’s first movie.

What do we know now?: Music video director Samuel Bayer is helming this “re-imagining” of the franchise. Jackie Earle Haley (Rorschach in “Watchmen”) is set to play Krueger (a part initially thought to be given to Billy Bob Thornton). Rooney Mara plays Nancy Thompson. Clancy Brown and Katie Cassidy also star.

The release date is set for April 30, 2010.

After going around Novena, my brother and I went to Scotts Road. Six key stores are in the area- Warped, Leftfoot, FreshJive, Gallery, Star Three Sixty (which is at the corner of Scotts and Orchard) and the Adidas Originals store. Let’s start, shall we?

Star Three Sixty, O-Store
I didn’t take photos at the Originals store as well as Star Three Sixty mainly because I wasn’t so keen on taking photos all day. These stores practically carry the same stuff you see at the Onitsuka Tiger Manila store (for Star Three Sixty) and the Originals Store. There might be 3 or 4 pieces that may not be available here but they’re not worth writing home about. Star Three Sixty carries Kidrobot and K-Swiss, alongside the Tigers. They can be located at Wheelock Place (the same mall with Borders). There’s also a Nike and adidas store there, but again, nothing great.

Pacific Plaza: Gallery

Though I didn’t take pictures inside the store, the Gallery is a nice store housing SBs and other skater brands. From Obey to Undefeated to Kiks Tyo and a lot more, this Gallery is a nice place to check out. RoyaleFam also has their gear here. I wanted to go back to check up on the shirts but didn’t have enough time. I’ll definitely go back the next time I’m in town.

Nike SB Big Gulp” Dunk HIs

Far East Plaza: Leftfoot and Freshjive
Far East Plaza is sneaker central on Singapore’s shopping district. Though there are hundred of sneaker stores along Orchard, Far East Plaza can waste a good amount of your time. The same holds true for FreshJive and Leftfoot. Though Leftfoot carries a pretty strong selection, they’re stuff usually revolves around what’s new in the market- may it be NSW, Puma (MY, Alexander McQueen, or Rudolf Dasslers), Adidas Originals, New Balances, Reeboks and Converse. If you want the newest kicks at retail, they’re pretty impressive. Leftfoot can also be located at Cineleisure. the Cathay, and Lorong Mambong. Lots of nice stuff, really.

The Far East Branch actually has two stores- they’re right behind each other. You have to walk around to get to the other side. The other side’s got a pretty good selection of older releases. I decided to take just one picture- the Big Gulp Dunks. Fresh Jive is one floor above (I think) and carries more skate shoes- Nike SB, DC Shoes, and some Chucks as well. They had the Quagmire (from the Family Guy fame) Dunks as well as some other Dunk/Blazer SBs.

Warped is awesome

Warped
Ofcourse I had to save the best for last. As I posted on my Fan’s page on facebook, thousands of shoes have come and gone, and most likely you’ve missed out on a lot. Warped is your time machine. Dubbed as the only full- blown consignment store in Asia, Warped (warpedstore.com) houses hundreds, maybe even thousands of pairs that are all worth copping. From Jordans, to AF1s, to AMs, to Dunks and SBs, Warped has them or had them in stock at one point or another.

The first time I laid eyes on the store (september 08), I was like a kid in a candy store. I felt like I walked into a museum of sorts- shoes you only see on the net but have never seen in person, all there. From the infamous What the Dunks (though I’ve seen them before), to the sample only Freddy Kreugers, Warped makes you wish you had money (and a lot of it) to burn. Not only does Warped carry kicks, they also carry toys and apparel. Kicks-friendly brands such as Quolomo, Kiks Tyo, Vans, Lacoste and Kidrobot are available in store. Ofcourse, prices do not reflect the prices when they first came out. Prices here are in the hundreds (usually 200 SGD up) but they definitely deserve the tags strapped on them. I had a great talk with one of the clerks/’managers of the store and we just talked shop and discussed the sneaker landscape of SE Asia. Here’s a rundown of the pairs I saw in stock:

Nike AF-1 Dice-K Dragon

AF-1 Dice-K Dragon- This pair came out for Red Sox Japanese pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka (aka Dice-K). Nice texture and threads used on this. Dragon scales around the heel with his number on it. Price: 570 usd (approx 27k php).

AM1s- Kabutomoshi and Atmos

Air Max 1s are all around and the one on the right is one of the more coveted pieces- the Air Max 1 x atmos. The famous nike elephant print covers this pair with the nice clean colorway. Jap store atmos collabed with Nike to produce 2000 pairs. These days, they’re hard to come by. This pair is selling for about 450 SGD (or 15k php).

A-ZX series

Adidas’ 2008 Consortium release was one of the better ones of ‘08. Collaborating with 24 stores worldwide, Adidas brought the heat to end the year. Seen here are the ARC, Undefeated, Crooked Tongues, Bodega and Kendo pieces. They usually range at the 200-400 SGD per pair. I was lucky enough to get a pair from the O-Store around September last year.

Nike 1World x Michael Lau Crazy

Michael Lau produced this pair, getting inspiration from mental asylum, thus the name Crazy. From the numbers on the tongue and on the heel, to the quilted work on the shoe, this really gave you a feeling that M. Lau was into the whole collaboration.

AM90 x DQM “Bacon”

I hope you see the resemblance to our favorite breakfast staple. The Dave’s Quality Meat collab is quite rare and would be lucky to even get a pair without paying a premium. These go for 520 USD at Warped.

Nike Dunk SB Freddy Kreuger

Now here’s one piece that will be nearly impossible to find. The Freddy Kreugers were supposed to come out November for Nike’s Horror Pack but I guess Nike wasn’t able to clear it. Only 7 pairs are available worldwide and Warped’s got two! This pair has the blood splattered all over as well the famous red/green stripes Freddy wore while freaking people out. I forgot how much they were selling it but it’s definitely in the thousands (at least 90k php).

Nike Dunk Pack: Ueno “Panda”

The Japan Dunk Pack was one of the well thought of packs over the past 2 years. The Dunk is dedicated to Ueno Park, home of Ling Ling the panda. The shoe’s upper is covered with black and white horse hair to imitate the panda fur (yes, that was a stretch but you get the picture) and comes in a cage (and not your traditional box). Price: 530 usd

Puma x Undefeated

Puma released their Undefeated pack Jan of this year and quickly sold out. Our friend Jave lined up for his four pairs and can be seen at Crate (not for sale, though). If you still want to cop a pair, this one’s still at Warped and costs fairly cheap at 200 usd.

Nike SB What the Dunk?

I won’t talk about the What the Dunks as it would take a while to pick apart this infamous shoe. But to sum it up, the What the Dunks are a mash up of all the different pairs of famous SBs through the years. Also seen here are the Gucci Dunks and the Zoo Yorks. All three pairs are very rare and would definitely cost you an arm and a leg to purchase. So that ends the 2nd part of my singapore expedition.

Tune in later today or tomorrow for the next 2 parts of this sneaker trek of Singapore!

HOLY SHIT! YES THE NEW Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, the third remake in the string of 70’s and 80’s huge horror movie remakes has just signed Jackie Earle Hayley to play Freddy Krueger.

Hayley best known for his portrayal of Bad News Bear Kelly Leak in the original 76 Bad News Bears is what I would say is the perfect call on this. When I heard they were redoing Nightmare it was hard for me to imagine anyone other than Robert Englund playing Freddy, but I think this may be acceptable. It didnt matter for Friday the 13th, or Halloween because the characters are masked and pretty much walk around like assholes and kill stuff, but Freddy is all attitude and character.

Hayley I really think can pull this off, after seeing Little Children(fantastic movie), and his role in Watchmen(the only one that didnt suck balls) Im really geeked about this.

Ill keep this up to date and try to get as much info as I can.

Quite honestly, if his performance in Watchmen didn’t blow me away I would be fucking pissed. HOWEVER, he fucking owned in that movie and he does have the face to pull of Freddy. The movie is scheduled to come out April 16th of 2010.

Let’s just hope he can pull it off and they don’t butcher the movie itself… Otherwise I will be fucking pissed that they are “rebooting” another favorite series of mine.

Now that Platinum Dunes has a script and director in place for their “reboot” of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, and a shooting start date set as well, the next question is… who will don the infamous brown fedora and fingerblade glove? (And please, let’s make note that the 61 year old Robert Englund does not want to play the character anymore.) A current fave contender amongst genre fans & most of the on-line journalist community is Jackie Earle Haley (who was nominated for an Oscar for LITTLE CHILDREN back in 2006). While out promoting WATCHMEN (Haley portrays the vigilante Rorschach), IGNcaught up with the actor and cornered him about the persistant “Freddy Krueger” rumors! Here’s what he had to say:

Meanwhile, Shock Till You Drop is reporting that Andrew Clement will be handling the FX duties on the new NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET. Shock reports that, “Clement served on the animatronics team behind CLOVERFIELD and was the makeup artist on J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek and Spider-Man 3.” (As well as REPOSSESSION MAMBO due out later this year.) You can check out some of Clement’s work at the following link: http://www.creativecharacter.com/index.html

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET starts shooting April 27th with Samuel Bayer directing from a script by Wesley Strick. Brad Fuller, Andrew Form & Michael Bay will produce the redux. More when we hear it!

On April 16, 2010, another one of my favorite movies, A Nightmare on Elm Street, is going to be “rebooted”. I keep asking why this shit keeps happening but then I see how these fucking terrible remakes like the recent “Friday the 13th” are having amazing success. My only hope is that the recent rumors of Jackie Earle Haley (Rorschach in the new Watchmen movie) as Freddy Krueger are true. I swear to God if I find out a CONGO remake is in the works I am going to lose my shit….

Also check out these $1200 prototype Nikes that never went on sale. Too bad cause I definitely would of bought them.

Lastly, if anyone wants the entire Nightmare on Elm Street collection I got it for $25 on this site. Enjoy.
