So even though the BDR crew hasn’t been hanging like it used to this summer, I have still managed to do some decent beer drinking either with a close friend or two or on an outing with my Special Lady. I put in some serious work on that keg of Smithwicks that Tristan at The Press Room is trying to kick so he can replace it with Magic Hat Roxy Rolles. I haven’t checked in to see the status. So, look for an update later this week.

Here’s a recap of what’s been going on as of late:

I usually transition into darker beers in the fall and winter. This season is no exception — except that I’ve been finding more Redhook in my life lately. I’ve never been a big fan of Redhook until late this summer when Fredo kept ordering ESB that was on tap downstairs at Poco’s. Speaking of Fredo, I spotted the man over at Dos Amigos this weekend where he was grabbing a burrito. He filled me in on his recent loitering at homecoming weekend at UNH and how he ran into that Lindsay Lohan looking woman again, dancing on the roof of a moving truck. He could have rolled up to her and said hello. But Fredo being Fredo, the man just kept moving. “She looked kind of busy,” he told me. I tried to find the earlier post in which I chronicled how this mystery woman accosted Fredo one night at The Press Room, but I can’t seem to find it. Maybe I can get Fredo to post something so he can tell you the story himself.

As far the Redhook ESB goes, this weekend I picked up a 12 pack for the fridge and even found myself drinking a pint of Late Harvest Autumn Ale over a late Columbus Day lunch at Redhook Brewery. Late Harvest is pretty good. I’m not saying it’s going to take the crown from Brooklyn Octoberfest or even Sam’s, but you won’t find a warm glass of it near me anytime soon.

I admit, I don’t go to the Redhook brewery that often. (My last visit was for a 30th birthday party around 2002. For real.) When you live downtown and walk to most places for a pint, then it’s more challenging than you would think to get over to Pease. At any rate, don’t let me discourage you, my fellow Beer Drinkers. When I visited the brewery on Monday, I was just coming back from a hike and that pint I had over lunch was perfect.

While I was there, I also split a pint of the Tripel with the Special Lady. It’s a limited release for the brewery, a Belgian Tripel style of beer that has about 10 percent alcohol. I wasn’t dazzled with the taste. The cabonation seemed to get in way and left me with this sort of weird burnt taste. But hey, I’m not a huge fan of this style of beer anyway. One thing that I spotted on the menu, which looked interesting was an option to try any of the small batches the brewers had going at the moment. I wish I had ordered that instead.

With all this talk about Redhook, I would be remiss not to mention that perhaps the best beer they make is about to hit shelves again very soon. Winterhook Winter Ale has hints of caramel and chocolate and a deep flavor that I really love. I hear it’s available as soon as October, but I have yet to spot it in the store. I can recall some very cold December nights in recent years when it used to be on tap at The Rosa. I hope they bring it back. If some of these newer places in town (yeah, I mean you Ri Ra) wanted to turn some heads, then they should be wise and get some Winterhook on tap.

Where’s Brando? Does anyone care?    

HOOK: Trying to understand what happened to America (not just the Mafia). 

LINE: “Michael, we’re bigger than U.S. Steel.” 

SINKER: Not only do we get to see Michael’s consolidation of strength as new, very corporate head of the Mob family moving West to open casinos in Las Vegas and the personal price he pays, we get to see how it all started in flashbacks to a righteous, young Vito’s rise from poverty to power during the early part of the twentieth century. What scope! 

JOHN: Remember Al Pacino. I mean do you really remember him. When the music begins it goes straight to your heart. Like good poetry, a good movie alters your perspective on a subject forever. Like great poetry, this film offers something new each time you watch it. The seamless balance between the past and present creates a drama of opposites with layers of nuance. The rockpile of Scisily becomes a gala in Nevada where hypocrisy continues to play out. It’s dark inside (the film is in color but all night and silhouettes). What do we, the audience, come to Michael (the Godfather) for. We have to see through this darkness but can’t. Let’s face it, we’re not Michael or even Diane Keaton. We are Fredo. 

GO, GO, GO, GO (4 GOs out of four) 

SPANKY: Just when you think an actor couldn’t be any better than Pacino, along comes DeNiro—jumping roof tops of NYC’s Little Italy as the dirge of a religious parade snakes through streets below. He is the avenging angel, and that is who we the audience are too, John. But that’s what makes the ending so incredibly strong. After a cascade of violence we get a close-up of Michael Corleone’s sitting in the near dark of his boat house. There is silence following the gunshot killing his brother. Silence, and then after a moment the theme music kicks in again. We know it’s not the end, even if part three were never added. This is James Agee and Walker Evans made new. This should be required viewing every ten years. This is an American masterpiece. 

“TWO PAWs Up” (4 BARKs out of four) 

GOSSIP: Interestingly, in order for Coppola to make the first “Godfather” film in New York, he had to agree not to use the words “Mafia” or “Cosa Nostra” anywhere in it (the film refers to the Mob as the “family business” and the “syndicate,” instead). Otherwise, the New York Mob might have caused trouble with the production. The gangsters, though, liked what they eventually saw. Also that Coppola initially wanted Sir Laurence Olivier to play Don Vito Corleone, but novelist Mario Puzo wanted Brando, and Brando won out, thanks to his own eager desire to play the role and despite Paramount’s less-than-enthusiastic appraisal of the idea. In fact, the studio showed its displeasure with most of Coppola’s choices for the major roles, including using relative unknown Al Pacino as young Michael which almost pushed things to the point of the studio firing the director. Brando later said he tried to imitate gangster Frank Costello’s voice in the movie, but he had to redub some of his dialogue because it was so hard to understand. Everyone assumed Brando would come back to star in the sequel, but he said he had done the first film as a social comment on American corporate power and had no interest in doing another one. The fact that Paramount still didn’t want much to do with the tempestuous Brando probably added to the actor turning down the role. So, Coppola worked around him, filming a few scenes with the older Don present but out of the room. By the way, if the Corleone estate at Lake Tahoe looks impressive, it should be; it was the property of former industrialist Henry J. Kaiser.

Every once in a while, I’ll check on the things that people search for on the Web that wind up bringing them to our site. Sometimes, they’re legitimately looking for our site, and will type in something like ”beer drinking report,” but many times that’s clearly not the case.

At least once a day, one of the searches makes me burst out laughing. So in the spirit of giving, here are some of my favorites from the past week, with my comments:

• “swingers i’m going to pull me a fredo” – I’m not sure what “pulling a fredo” means, exactly, but I’m hoping he can enlighten us.
• “why is mr x and beer drinker” – Because you need us, that’s why.
• “guy gets really big from drinking lots of beer” – Keep that in mind, Beer Drinker.
• “drinking 8 beers a night is good for you” – Whew. I thought it was going to make me fat.
• “drinking ten beers a night” – AKA, a typical weeknight for Mr. X.
• “ladies drinking movies” – In other words, movies The Captain would enjoy.
• “bat signal” – Believe it or not, this one comes up almost once a day.
• “make my own bat signal” – This one may be my all-time favorite.
• “red light district portsmouth” – Wipe that drool off your face, Beer Drinker.

And remember, those are all from the past 7 days. If I can get The Beer Drinker to show me how to look at older searches, I’ll have some more for you in the near future.

Welcome to my world, and yes, I had the music cranked pretty damned loud. The hum/white noise is the sewer workers, and it kicked Hoahio’s butt while the piledriver added a beat that, theoretically, you could dance to.

Six Democrats voted to defund Gitmo. Amy Klobuchar wasn’t one of them. DiFi stepped up to the plate and said California’s prisons aren’t afraid to take Gitmo prisoners. I’m still not sure where the pantswetting fear of Gitmo prisoners comes from, the bulk of them being Muslim hillbillies who make Mayberry’s Ernest T. Bass look like a Rhodes Scholar by comparison.

Zachary Roth reports that the NYC synagogue bombers were pretty much the same as the Florida “terrorists”: All FBI enablers and no ability to act out without feds helping.

Lounge music seems to be getting me through the hyper-industrialization of my world. I get up from my desk and I’m almost surprised to find myself standing on carpet instead of the steel and concrete floors of Firestone.

But industrial noise is honest noise; it’s the sound of work being done. As opposed to the noise you hear in the halls of Congress, which is pretty much what a bordello sounds like during peak fucking hours.

Impressionante, o Palmeiras estava com a vantagem do empate, Luxemburgo já contava com a vitória (como sempre).

Mas o Sport na Ilha do Retiro, ou se preferir “La bombonilha”, é um time duro de bater, no gramado judiado com buracos e grama irregular, consegue extrair o melhor de cada um de seus jogadores e de Nelsinho Batista, que está fazendo um trabalho incrível no Sport.

Não serei hipócrita, mas todo time treme ao entrar na Ilha, não importa se é time de ponta ou time de segunda, todos tremem.

Menos um, um santo que sempre está em evidência, seja pelas atuações ou pelas declarações.

No Jogo entre Palmeiras e Sport na Ilha do Retiro pelas oitavas de final da Libertadores da América, o Verdão precisava só de um empate  mas deixou o leão fazer um gol mesmo com defesas impossíveis de Marcos.

O jogo prosseguiu para os pênaltis e a tensão aumentou, mas a estrela de Marcos do Palmeiras brilhou, São Marcos pegou 3 penaltis sensacionais e garantiu o Palmeiras nas quartas de finais.

No fim da partida ainda teve tempo para uma frase genial dita em entrevista a uma emissora de TV. “Vocês não tem idéia de como dói defender penaltis com 36 anos”.

This is the end . . . beautiful friend . . .

The National Evil commented long ago on the eternal mystery that is Madonna’s enduring relevance, as well as the infuriating awfulness of Guy Ritchie’s first shot at a “return” to form, Revolver.

Yes, he imagined he was done with all things Guy Ritchie, because RockNRolla arrived in its lil’ red sleeve . . . and RockNRolla, in case you didn’t know, is supposed to be Ritchie’s “for real this time” return to form. Kooky cast of criminal characters careening in and out of each other’s lives, a McGuffin of sorts (a painting instead of Snatch’s diamond), witty dialogue . . . ya know, Guy Ritchie shit.

Er, nope. RockNRolla, while not Revolver-bad, is still pretty awful. Inside of an hour, Evil wanted to see a piano fall on the head of each and every actor and be done with it. Never has he seen a less charismatic or interesting lot of characters hurled onscreen. The notion that anyone would care what happened to any of them, frankly, offends the intellect.

One cannot number this movie’s sins. But we’re going to try anyway.

1. Complete waste of Idris Elba, the brilliant actor who played Evil’s favorite character (Stringer Bell) on his favorite show (The Wire).

2. Ludicrously convoluted plot revolving around . . . wait for it . . . REAL ESTATE SCAMMING! Why not, say, an emerald?

3. The main heavy is essentially the same character—spouting essentially the same lines—as Brick Top in Snatch. He just has better teeth.

4. And most of all—worst of all—we have the ending: our “RockNRolla,” a crackhead lead singer named Johnny for whom we are supposed to feel some sort of sympathy—proclaims his intention to quit the music biz and become a gangsta . . . “A real RockNRolla.” And then—then!—we see this message: “Johnny and the Wild Bunch will return in The Real RockNRolla.”

Holy shit! It’s true (Wikipedia says so): Ritchie intends this to be the first movie in a fucking trilogy! Starring the crackhead rocker, the most irritating character in the flick! (And that’s saying something.)

Imagine finishing The Godfather and reading this message: “Fredo will return in The Godfather, Part II.”

FREDO—what the—? you’d blurt. As did the Evil regarding RockNRolla. Apparently Guy thinks anyone would want to follow the further misadventures of this gang. Oy.

Appearances to the contrary, Evil doesn’t enjoy slagging Ritchie. Snatch is one of Evil’s all-time favorite flicks. (See? See?) But that’s what impels the Evil to slag the man. What happened to him?

This post was intended as a snarky shot at Madonna and the possibility that she is a talent vampire as explanation for Ritchie’s demise. Then Evil concocted a better theory. While Ritchie has been crapping the creative bed these last nine years since Snatch, his producer, Matthew Vaughn, has directed the true heir to the Lock, Stock/Snatch tradtion: the excellent Layer Cake. Is it possible Vaughn was really the brains behind the operation? Or at least the fun?

Because that’s what’s missing from both Revolver and RockNRolla. The fun. There’s the witty (or wannabe witty, at least) dialogue, the innovative camera work, the motley cast of rogues . . . but there’s no joy.

Maybe instead of waiting impatiently for Ritchie to get his mojo back, we should realize that maybe he never had it. And wait instead for the next movie by the one who did.

Did anyone, um, actually enjoy either Revolver or RockNRolla? If so, defend your moral failure!

Es ist einfach faszinierend, wie viel man mit der Computertechnologie so anstellen kann. Auch im Bereich der Musik tut sich einiges bei dessen Software. So habe ich (herzlich dankend!) zum vergangenen Geburtstag das Programm “Music Maker 15 Premium” geschenkt bekommen. Eine Software, die nicht nur mit ihrer leichen Bedienbarkeit überzeugt, sonder auch richtig Spaß macht! Als zwei lustige und kurze Beispiele könnt ihr die folgenden Lieder anhören und auch kostenlos von mir runterladen. Das Zweite ist übrigens das spontane Werk von Debora Mira:

Tummy time!

 Back on the home front, henchmen 1 and 2 are deep in conference, working out just what sort of greeting they are to offer their previously ailing elder brother when he arrives on the scene tomorrow. Each is intent to show his love in a grand way, lest any ambivalence be read as disloyalty. Neither wants to end up like Fredo.

New Years Day 1959 – this is when Michael Corleone tells Fredo that he knew Fredo had set up the hit at Nevada Compound. From Godfather II.

Doctorates have been written on the Godfather movies so all I will say is see the movies.

A good movie to watch after watching Godfather II is the Italian movie the Golden Door (Nuovomondo) directed by Emanuele Crialese. This movie deals with the some of the experiences of the non-english speaking people moving to America. I have inserted the standard trailer because it captures the movie than the english language trailer.

The Raps / Hornet game is happening (pour moi) on a slight tape delay. Live blogging would be somewhat redundant. But I do have thoughts…

I think we can all agree that shooting the basketball is something that Jason Kapono can do really well. You could make the argument – quite reasonably – that he is one of the ten-best pure shooters in the League. So you can imagine my delight to see him regularly featured in the Raptor offense. What a sound, logical decision by Jay Triano. I hope nobody is waiting for the punch line…

Jermaine O’Neal has lost weight; Jose Calderon’s hamstring has improved; not coincidentally, so has him jumper; Anthony Parker seems effective off the bench and Joey Graham might not be a dummy. I am awash in optimism. It has washed over me.

Andrea Bargnani, this one’s for you. You dink.

There is something calming about watching Chris Paul play basketball. I might need to take a timeout.

It’s safe to say that the sample size from the Jay Triano experience is not yet big enough to make a clear judgment of his aptitude as an NBA Coach. That would be irresponsible. You know what isn’t though? Critiquing his end of quarter/half/game play calling. I’d rather use my rectum to open beer bottles than watch another turn around 40-footer.

Raptors looked good in the first half. (They trail by five.) I’m happy that the coaching staff is looking towards Roko Ukic’s ceiling as opposed to Will Solomon’s lack thereof. There’s a reason that Will hasn’t been in the league since 2002. Let Dennis Green take it away. (Just sub in Will’s name whenever Dennis says “The Bears”.)

You know that paragraph on Jason Kapono that I wrote earlier? Yeah. I have a meth problem, so…

There’s a lot to love about Leo Rautins:

1. He never lets an important moment in the game interrupt him when he’s firing off a cliche about the previous play.
2. He’s very tan.
3. His Leo-ism’s lend themselves to drinking games quite nicely. Just don’t drink when he applauds a player for being aggressive even though they didn’t make a bucket. You’ll be naked in the back of a police cruiser covered in your own throw-up before you know it.
4. There’s a pretty good chance he walks into restaurants in Toronto and says: “I’m Leo Rautins! You’ll FIND a table for me or I will shut this place down. I’m LEO RAUTINS!!!”

Leo Rautins has a blog. I’m not going to insinuate that this blog has a ghostwriter… I’m not. But Leo Rautins doesn’t write it. And there is a ghostwriter.

Nice tilt going on right now. 72-70 New Orleans.

Quick question: I’m wondering if anybody else saw Kanye West on Saturday Night Live last night? Was he doing a Kanye West sketch? I’m perplexed.

The Raptors have opened the fourth quarter with nefarious intentions. Bargnani missed a jumper. Roko missed a three. Roko carried the ball. Roko missed a lay-up. Jay Triano subbed them out of the game and then made them take off their sneakers just so nobody got confused. Anthony Parker missed a three and Rasual Butler hit a three off a one-second-left-on-the-clock inbound play. Yikes. Jermaine O’Neal hit a lay-up to stop the bleeding. By the way… I might have misspelled Rasual Butler’s name. I’m not double checking.

Leo Rautins: “When a big goes rim to rim like that and pins his man there’s not much you can do.” Oh, Leo.

New Orleans is leading 89-81 with six minutes to go and Chris Paul entering the game. The Raptors just turned the ball over after an officials time out. Hey Coach Triano? I’m losing patience.

Moon just missed a three that would have cut it to three. Big miss. Big.

After a botched alley-oop, Rasual Butler nailed a three for a nine point lead with 3:25 to play. That should do it.

As you can probably tell, Andrea Bargnani takes me to a really dark place. I don’t like it there. Here’s another Godfather clip that perfectly illustrates the current state of our relationship. (This position is subject to change.) Skip ahead to 3:35.

The Raptors – it appears – have finally realized that they have a size advantage down low. If they can continue to exploit this in the fifth quarter, we might actually win.

Final thoughts: New Orleans is better. That’s a salient point, I think. We’re beginning to see flashes of compotence, but that doesn’t change my inkling that – in full flight – this is a 43 win team. Them the breaks. Hornets 99 Raptors 91.

We at Ten Swamps love the Godfather movies so when we came across this artical on the “Mayors Wellness Campaign” last week (http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/New-Jerseys-Mayors-Wellness-Campaign/story.aspx?guid=%7B93852078-AA8E-46C0-9078-1ED49762BDD3%7D) we realized that when it comes to mobilizing our community around public health issues, Tenafly is the Luca Bratzi of municipalities.

“The Mayors Wellness Campaign is an initiative of the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute ( www.njhcqi.org) in partnership with the New Jersey State League of Municipalities ( www.njslom.org). The MWC supports mayors as champions of community health. The goal is to increase opportunities for New Jersey residents to participate in daily physical activity with a long-term goal of reducing health care costs secondary to obesity. Through public-private partnerships, the MWC provides structure and resources for healthy community initiatives. By encouraging mayors to play a leadership role in supporting local opportunities for active, healthy lifestyles, the intent of the MWC is to improve health and make New Jersey a national leader in community-based health interventions.”

After reading the article we went looking to see how Tenafly is participating…it turns out we are not.  Here is a community based initiative that would bring together students, seniors and families to promote a healthier lifestyle.  Funding is available through state, federal and private grants.  The town loves health based initiatives…the 5k Race is huge…This is an offer we can’t refuse!
