The next time I see one of my many J-s, I’m going to punch him in the back of the head for working for such a ridiculous company.

I’ve been on a Vodafone pay-as-you-go plan since they first came out* and largely, the experience has been a good one. I’ve always been able to get a signal – unless I’m in the Sunflower Garden Chinese take-away in Pitmedden – and until today, have only once needed to call customer support.

Back in the dark days before the internet was king, I remember dialing 191 from my spangly new Alcatel Brick – I swear that’s what the model was called - to register my new phone and thus receive the princely sum of £2.50 in free calls and texts. The thing I remember most about the whole affair is the fact that the call-centre representative’s voice kept fluctuating throughout the length of the conversation, putting him at a similar age to me.

Now though, when you call Vodafone, nothing fluctuates because you’re talking to an incompetently programmed machine. Now ordinarily, I don’t mind dealing with a machine when I want to top up the credit on my phone – to have a real person on the other end at hideous o’clock in the morning, catering to the endless sobs of drunken folk who’ve just cheated on/broken up with/looked at** their other half and want to make things right, would be ludicrous.

However, when the debit card that I have been using over the past year is refused by the system as “unregistered”, I want to actually speak to someone – preferably someone who knows what they’re doing. Instead of patching me through to an operator, the machine – which will be refered to as ‘Poo’ from now on – simply tells me to call a different number for ‘card related queries’.

So I called the other number, and guess what? Poo answered again. The same shrill voice told me to choose from a list of options, one of which offered the seemingly ellusive ‘help’ that I sought. So I did as I was told, I pressed buttons when prompted and lo-and-behold, I was transferred to yet another machine. Following ten minutes of entirely useless advice, I hung up and chose another option, trying to alter my card details through the ridiculous automated process. I presumed that as I’d just moved house, the change of address would be the culprit in making the payment process difficult. I was right, as it turns out, but apparently Poo can’t understand my half-Sheffield-half-Aberdonian accent so, rather than transfer me to an advisor, the machine hung up on me.

No, I’m not kidding, the machine hung up. At this point, I got a little mad and decided to try a tactic that I used to use when dealing with NTL – press any old button until you confuse the machine and are transferred to someone with a pulse. Only Poo hung up on me again. So, under the advice of J- my friend from uni, not J- that I will punch, I tried not doing anything, waiting to see if the system would transfer me. But Poo hung up for a third time.

I checked the Vodafone website and then tried dialing their helpline number from my mobile, only I didn’t have enough credit so the system patched me through to the top-up line, which as my reason for calling in the first place, wasn’t at all helpful. After much another internet search, I found the Vodafone numbers to call from a landline – all of which were 0870. And this is really where the company lost any good-grace I was willing to give. I find it unacceptable that when there is a fault in the system, the paying customer has to spend more money in order to sort it out. Essentially, we’re being charged for Vodafone’s short-comings. So, I decided to try out saynoto0870.com and, as the site promised, I got an 0808 number instead.

So finally, I get through to a living, breathing human being and yes, the fault in their top-up system was because I’d changed address. The woman on the other end of the line quickly and effectively changed the details and topped up my phone as well.

Time on phone to real person: Under two minutes.

Time on phone to Poo: Close to an hour.

The lesson in all of this? If you want something done right, look up phone numbers on the above mentioned website. If you want to waste time in a less stressful way than talking to Poo, go outside and talk to a rock.

I was in a pretty foul mood after all of that, as you can imagine, but then I got caught up on Bex’s blog and decided that really, in the grand scheme of things, life is pretty fabulous. I have a lot more than three things to be grateful for. And just to cement all of that in my brain, I went for a trip to the ludicrously cheap farm shop and bought tonight’s dinner for three for the high price of £1. Then I sped home, listening to Bon Jovi. Life is good.

__________

* Unless, of course, you count that brief fling with Orange which resulted in my Motorola Pebl, the only mobile phone I’ve ever actively coveted. And the time I lived in Denmark and needed a CBB sim.

** Especially because no plastic surgeons are open at that hour {insert rimshot here}.

There’s been a slew of announcements fluffing a second wave of anonymous-style phone calling via the web. Nobody made money on the first wave, so I’m not sure where the beef, er, green is the second time around.

Three and four years ago, it was all the rage to A) Give away free phone numbers for web usage and B) Provide anonymous phone calling between two parties over the web. Two and three years ago, smaller companies went into the tank while larger companies just ditched the idea of “free.”

Digitrad, making a big push at DEMOfall ‘09, seems to be the latest of the guys marching down the old trampled path to doom, offering up a free “multimedia” phone number, a .tel domain name and “free call forwarding” and a flat fee to “free” dialing to locations around the globe.

If your business model is JUST providing voice via the browser, I can kinda sorta get it. C2Call (www.c2call.com) has got a Friendcaller.com app, but then it slips into the “Gee, you can also call phone number for only pennies (well, Euros) per minute” mode… which didn’t end well for very many of the Telecom 2.0/Phone 2.0 wave…

Vivox may have the most interesting play in the space, just having announced its beta launch in Facebook and using a wideband (but not G.722) codec for all of its logged minutes on SecondLife and multi-player games where part of the fun is talking smack in real-time.

Hmm, I’d love to leave short voice messages to certain people in “Mafia Wars”…

I’m sure everyone reading this post can relate to the fact that long distance phone calls from

I’m sure everyone reading this post can relate to the fact that long distance phone calls from a mobile phone are generally too expensive to even think about making. And when you do make them, you rush through the conversation as quickly as possible in order to fit a 5 or 10 minute conversation into 2 minutes (or no more than 1 minute 59 seconds, so as to avoid the 3rd minute charge). As I live overseas, away from all my friends and family, this is an issue that often bothers me. In all honesty, it sucks. It has been my number one complaint, and would be the first thing i’d fix with my wireless service. CHEAPER LONG DISTANCE CALLING.

But how about FREE long distance calling? That sounds even better. In fact, that sounds great. At this point, I should assure you that I’m not trying to sell anything, I dont have some magical calling card, or some magical jack (if you’ve seen the infomercial). I am just about to climb up to the virtual rooftops and shout out to whoever’s listening about my new discovery. Google Voice.

Google Voice is a recently released innovation from internet giants Google (obviously), which is essentially an internet phone number. It exists in some magical space somewhere in the middle of the internet (read “I have no idea how it works”). But I also dont care how it works. All I know, is that through my data plan, I am now able to make and receive as many long distance calls as I like to Canada and the US for free. Absolutely free.

To sign up for Google Voice, I had to fill out a little form on their website (www.google.com/voice), and then wait for an invite. The invite took about a month to arrive in my inbox, but when it did, I went to work setting up my account. Along with the standard stuff like name, address, email address etc, you also get to choose your phone number. They give you the option to type a word, and then they will show you the options you have which include the word you gave them. In my case, i put in the word PANT. (pretty self explanatory if you’re reading this blog). And up came several options such as 55-PANT-6586 or 3-PANT-40596. But I wanted something with PANT on the end, so I chose to randomly generate another set of numbers, then another, then another until I finally came across one which had multiple numbers and PANT at the end. I obviously won’t post the number here, but its to the effect of

(55*) 6**-PANT.

Great. so now I had my personalized number, I was incredibly sceptical. Where is the catch. When do I have to put in a credit card number. I’m happy to say, this step never came. I clicked finish and it redirected me to my newly acquired Google Voice inbox. At this point, it is essentially the same as a Skype account. I’m not incredibly familiar with Skype, I have just started using it (mainly for video chats), but it seems that you can make and receive calls on your computer. Same as Google Voice. So whats the big deal?

I remember reading on Crackberry.com, one of my favourite blogs, that there was recently a free Google Voice Dialer app released for the blackberry. At the point when I read that post, I had no idea what they were talking about, and didnt think much of it. But it popped back into my head when I set up my GV account, and I went looking for it. Relatively easily, I found it and installed it on my blackberry. When i opened up the app, it looked very similar to a dialing screen on any phone. It finally hit me. “Can I really just dial in a number here, in this app, and it will automatically call from my Google Voice number?”. Excited, I dialed a friend of mine’s phone number up in Winnipeg, Canada…and it started ringing.

Then…he answered. “Hello?” he asked, with a confused tone in his voice…I said hello back…and he said “What is Badger California?” He was referring to the caller ID that showed up when I called. The area code that I chose from my google voice number happens to be from a city (or town) called Badger in California. I quickly explained the situation to him and told him I was just testing it out.

Success.

I asked him to call the number back. Sure enough it rang. When i answered, an automated voice said “You are receiving a call from….(my friends recorded voice saying his name). press 1 to answer the call, press 2 to leave a voicemail…and press 3 to listen in on the voicemail.” I pressed 1, and sure enough, there he was. plain and simple.

So now that I have taken an extensively long route of explaining the process, I will go into the facts. The GV app for blackberry basically allows you to forward your GV number to your mobile phone (which I chose. You can also choose to forward it to your house phone, or your work phone, or all three of your phones). So when someone dials it, your cell phone rings. If you call someone through the GV app instead of through your normal phone dialer, you call through your GV number. Amazing. Too good to be true, right? Unfortunately….right.

First of all, Google Voice is ONLY available in the US at the time of this post. You cannot sign up for it in Canada, or anywhere else for that matter. Secondly, free calls are limited to continental North America. You have to load your Google Voice account with money in order to call any other countries (much like Skype). Giving credit where credit is due, the rates are actually very good (for example 2 cents a minutes to the UK). Third, iphone users…for the time being..you are out of luck. Apple has rejected Google’s bid for a GV app in the app store (an interesting controversy if you want to read more).
I really apologize for rambling on for so long, but if you’ve made it this far, you’ve obviously found it interesting. So if you have a blackberry, and you live in the US (or visit often, like me) then get your little fingers typing on to www.google.com/voice and sign up for an invite. You will be glad you did.

With a few tweaks, though, you can talk to anyone on-the-cheap through Skype, or entirely for free with Gizmo.

Since we’re extremely cheap, we’ll start out with the Gizmo/Google Voice 1/2 combo, since you can use it to place and receive calls without spending a dime. If you’re particularly partial to Skype, we’ll demonstrate how you can integrate Gizmo, Voice, and Skype for cheaper Skype calls after we demonstrate how to get everything up and running with Gizmo.

What you’ll need

A comfortable headset: Mine’s a $30, USB-or-analog model I grabbed off the shelf at Target. If you plan to do some serious talking from in front of your monitor, read up on what works best for your ears and head.

Free Google Voice account: If you haven’t already requested an invite, do so now. They’re still dishing them out first-come, first-served style, and the line gets longer every time someone writes an article about the service (ahem).

Free Gizmo5 account: It’s a free virtual phone service that Google Voice officially supports and connects to. If you’re more of a Skype person, we’ll show you a relatively cheap solution for hooking up Gizmo to Skype.

Broadband net connection: Because you’re doing a good deal of data transfer and service forwarding, you’ll want a pretty good pipe for phone calls that won’t make you wish for your cell phone.

Hooking up Voice and Gizmo

Once you’ve finished signing up for Gizmo and Google Voice, head to
my.gizmo5.com
, and log yourself in if necessary. Hit the “My” link in the upper-right corner to get to your settings page. The first box asks you to enter your Google Voice number and turn Google Voice calling on, which you should definitely do. That routes all outbound Gizmo calls through Voice, eliminating the need to buy credits for those outbound calls.

Three rows down, under the “Account Overview” section, copy your SIP Number, which you won’t need to memorize, or even use, except this one time. Head over to Google Voice, click the Settings link, then Phones, and paste that SIP number into the “Number” field. Give your Gizmo account a name like, say, Gizmo, then set the “Phone Type” to Gizmo. By default, your Gizmo/VoIP phone will always “ring” whenever someone calls your Google Voice number from any phone. I find that to be just fine, since “ringing” that phone doesn’t really affect any of your other phones, and I don’t leave my computer on at all times with the speakers at full blast. If you only want your virtual phone to ring at certain times on certain days, go ahead and tweak those settings in Voice, then hit Save.

Got those headphones handy? Plug them in, usually through a USB port or the dual red/green mic/speakers ports on your computer. Check that the headphones are picking up sounds and that the microphone is enabled in your system’s volume settings. Want to test out your Voice/Gizmo capabilities? Head to http://gizmocall.com, then sign in with your Gizmo username. Hit the “Test” button for an echo test of your headset and connection. To try out an actual call, call your Google Voice number from a standard cell or landline phone you have handy, or open up Google Voice’s site in another browser tab and make a call to a phone number that won’t mind getting it.

It’s worth noting that since you’re using a VoIP service through another VoIP service’s routers, it’s fair to expect a bit of call lag. I haven’t noticed an audible difference between using Google Voice on my cellphone and through Gizmo but, then again, I’ve had seemingly worse lag experiences overall with Voice than others I’ve complained about it to. Your mileage will almost certainly vary, but if you’ve got an ultra-important phone interview for a job, consider stepping away from your headset. Otherwise, it probably works just fine for normal conversations.

Calling tools

If all went well between Voice and Gizmo, you’ve got a few options for making and receiving free calls through your headset with Voice and Gizmo:

The GizmoCall.com site: You can keep the page itself loaded in your browser, or click the “Open in separate window” link to keep it separate from your browsing work. Want to reduce browser tab necessities and make Gizmo even more convenient? Check out Google Voice Tricks’ write-up on embedding Gizmo’s gadget into Gmail.

Gizmo software: Available for download for Windows, Mac, and Linux systems, Gizmo the application is very similar to Skype, sitting in the system tray and popping up an alert window when a new call is coming in. It also tracks your VoIP calling separate from your Google Voice account, which can be helpful for client billing or other purposes. If you’re planning to keep Gizmo open to accept calls, you’ll probably want to import your contacts into it to recognize callers. You can only import an Outlook-formatted file into Gizmo, but that’s one of the formats most contact managers (Google, Apple Mail, etc.) can export to.

Google Voice site: You’ll still need to have some kind of Gizmo notifier running to receive calls, but Google Voice’s own site is pretty handy for making calls. Load up the site (or keep it loaded as a permatab), hit “c” to make a call, type in a contact name or phone number, then select your Gizmo number as the caller. Google will ring you at Gizmo, and once you pick up, the call starts ringing through to the intended receiver.

Forwarding to Skype

If you’re already set up with a Skype name and lots of contacts and you’d prefer to keep Skype as your go-to VoIP app, you can get Google Voice and Gizmo to route calls to Skype for notably less money than Skype charges for its call-out service. Alternately, if you only need to make the occasional Skype call and don’t want to bother installing software and getting a user account, Gizmo and Google are available there, too.

Gizmo explains all the potential uses and ins and outs at its OpenSky page, and also lists pricing. You can make free calls to Skype names and forward your Voice/Gizmo calls to Skype for anywhere from 1-5 minutes, depending on server load—fine for quick “Call me back” or “Here’s the deal” messages, but not conversations. OpenSky claims a $20/year price for basically unlimited calling of up to 2 hours per call. We don’t do a lot of Skype out calling, but that seems like a pretty good deal.

Whether you’re going the free short call route or paying for some OpenSky credit, setting up a Voice-to-Gizmo-to-Skype connection is fairly easy. Head to your Gizmo5 settings page again, then head to the “Forwarding Gizmo5 Calls” section. Set Gizmo to forward all calls to Skype, then fill in your Skype username. That’s it—when someone rings your Voice number, if you’ve got Voice configured to ring you at Gizmo, then you’ll actually be rung up at Skype. The last thing you’ll need to do is enable Skype to accept calls from anonymous callers—kind of a pain, but necessary, because Gizmo routes your calls through different Skype names from time to time.

That’s the starting point for integrating free (or very cheap) VoIP with Google Voice, but with such open, geeky services, we’re sure there’s a lot more that can be done. Post up your questions, suggestions, and neat hacks in the comments.

Product Summary

Witel is a new mobile phone service that provides its customers with unlimited global calling without the need for a computer. With Witel, any two subscribers may call each other for free no matter where on earth they are located, as long as they are within the vicinity of a WiFi network. The concept is very brazen and revolves around phones that Witel developed which route phone calls over WiFi networks as opposed to traditional mobile phone networks. These phones retail for $59.99 and can be ordered online to any location in the world. Additionally Witel service is available on the Blackberry, iPhone, or any WiFi enabled device users through a classic SIP Protocol Client. This way users can keep their traditional phones and when they go into an area with WiFi make calls through the Witel service.

Our Review

We all hear about companies that promise Free Calls. In all truth over the past few years with the wide adoption of the internet and computers, free calls have become a reality. The internet has created a network which allows for the delivery of calls between any two computers. The result is a free call but with some major drawbacks. These are not real phone calls as there are no phone numbers to dial only tricky usernames that require software downloads and computer literacy. The biggest drawback of all is that you have to be sitting with this bulky computer and annoying headphones to make calls to people who also need to be on their computer. So while these calls are Free that are definitely not as satisfying and in a sense it almost feels as though we have taken a step back with the introduction of these technologies.

Now Witel, Corp. a new mobile phone service has changed all that. What this company has done is nothing short of amazing. They kept the Free part of the internet calls but developed special phones that do all the tricky stuff a computer would normally do. The phones look and feel like a normal mobile phones and retail for only a fraction of the cost at only $59.99. While the price is certainly a joke, the performance is of the product is nothing short of astounding. With these phones and the introduction of Virtual Numbers, any two people can make free calls to each other from any part of the globe. The call quality is comparable if not better to conventional mobile phones. As if that isn’t enough with Witel service you can also call regular non-witel phones in 48 countries for Free and you can be anywhere in the world and still make those calls for Free. You can be in Nairobi, Saudi Arabia, Shanghai, Istanbul, or London England. The price you pay for these calls is NOTHING!

And as if that wasn’t enough another incredible feature that Witel provides its users for Free is the ability to choose a real phone number from almost any country in the world and this unique phone number is linked to the customers Witel phone. To fully understand this concept imagine having a New York phone number (212) and be in Tokyo Japan. When your friends in New York dial a 212 number it will ring your Witel phone in Tokyo. When you pick up and talk it will cost you nothing, and for your friend who may be driving In their car in New York the call will be completely local because they dialed a 212 Number.

The possibilities are endless and we are really only scratching the surface with our imaginations of the different uses.

Witel service comes with more features such as voicemails that are delivered to your email inbox. This feature is one of the coolest we have ever seen. When our Witel phone was turned off we had someone call us and they left a message. When we accessed our email we saw “One New Voicemail” with an attachment. We opened the attachment and were amazed to hear the voicemail being played. Voicemails can also be heard on your Witel phone and through the Witel control panel.

Signing Up For Witel Service

Signing up for Witel service is Easy. We visited their site: www.witel.com and completed the 4 easy steps in less than 4 minutes flat. Once we entered our credit card information and our order was completed successfully we received an email with all the pertinent account information.

Receiving The Witel Jetter

Who ever heard of a phone for 60 bucks. We were very skeptical at first but when we received the Witel Jetter we were literally in shock and awe. The phone definitely does not feel as though it should be sold for $59.99, rather $159.99. It turns on effortlessly and requests your Witel login information. After entering the info we reached the main screen. We then entered the menu and searched for a WiFi network which we found within a few seconds. We connected to the network and the phone was registered.

The Jetter is Very Smart

The Jetter is quite smart. It remembers WiFi networks so that you don’t have to find them more than once. Say you connect to a network that requires a password. The Jetter will automatically remember that network and whenever you are within its vicinity will connect seamlessly every time.

Placing Our First Call

Forget about tricky usernames, computer software, and bulky computers. We dialed our friends phone number just as though we were using our iphone. The call went through and we spoke for about 5 minutes. The quality was awesome and there was no discernable difference between a Witel call and a normal phone call.

The Plans

Everything we just discussed, all the features, all the greatness is packed in two simple calling plans. Brace yourself beause the costs are real. To add to the madness these costs are exactly the price you pay. There are no added surcharges, taxes, or regulatory fees. Witel means business.

Witel Basic $9.99/mo

Witel Unlimited $19.99/mo

Yes these are the costs for both plans. They each afford you the ability to call any other Witel phone and In the case of the second plan (the one we got) you can dial any Non-Witel phone in 48 countries as well.

You might be thinking how for such low rates the company must make you sign a long-term contract. The answer is NO. Witel plans can be cancelled at any time proving that the Company really stands behind their phone service.

The Bottom Line

We highly recommend Witel mobile phone service and the Witel Jetter. We believe that this company has changed the rules of global telephony in a way that will allow almost anyone in the world to make 100% Free Mobile Calls, without the need for computers, and technical know-how.
