Pancreatic Cancer-Signs to Look For

Pancreatic Cancer is a deadly disease, and there will be 45,000 new cases a year. 4 out of 5 of these cancer patients will die. Your pancreas is very important to your health. It has the enzymes that help to digest the fat in your body. When you get pancreatic cancer, it squeezes the tube that the liquid drips through and soon the liquid is backed up into your liver and etc., thereby causes your organs to shut down.

There are 3 signs to look for if you suspect pancreatic cancer.

1–Yellowing of the eyes-this shows that your liver has been affected–go to your doctor right away

2–Pain-The pancreas is located in the upper belly behind the stomach. If you start experiencing pain in this area, go to your doctor right away.

3–With pancreatic cancer, you won’t have the enzymes that help digest the fat in your body-your stools will be white and float to the top of the bowl. Go to your doctor right away.

Make sure to see your doctor if you have these symptoms.

Ever go into a store, maybe even with a list, and you end up with way more than you intended to buy?

Ever go into a store, maybe even with a list, and you end up with way more than you intended to buy?
I have the answer for you. I can help with your impulsive shopping! This information is free and and you only need one item to help with this oh so common conundrum. That item? A cell phone.

Here’s the deal:

The next time you need to buy something from the store, you need to pull out your phone first. It’s best to do this while in the car before walking into the store. If you have a list get that out and have it ready too.
Next, dial your best friend. If they are not available dial your mom or someone you know you will have a difficult time getting off the phone with.
Once engaged in conversation, let this person know you are going shopping and will need to refer to your list or that you need to be reminded of your goal i.e. ‘the one thing you went to Walmart to buy’.
Now, make your way into the store/mall.
You will find that engaging in the conversation keeps your mind occupied and you don’t notice the sales signs or that pair of sunglasses that you normally would have just had to have.

This theory was tested last night while my close friend, Jeannie, went to Walmart to buy ONE item. ONE. She started conversation before entering the facility, kept conversation going until she arrived in the designated area of Walmart, and proceeded to tell me “One second, i just have to find a small”. I politely waited while she found her ONE item and then re-engaged her while she headed to the checkout. Once in the car she stated “I was just in Walmart and I bought only ONE thing!”.
This process works. Keeping yourself distracted on the phone prohibits the slow meandering that lets your eye wonder and will help you to stay on target. The better the phone partner the more successful the trip.

With practice, you too can save money and spend more quality time with your friends and loved ones in deep conversation.

Try it and let me know if it works for you too!

Halloween-Hal low EEN-The Real Facts About Halloween

by Jeanie Blanton

Let us explore the real facts about Halloween. I saw a preacher the other day on TV, and he said he was giving candy to some kids on Halloween, and he ask them why they were celebrating it and why. He said none of the children could answer his questions. So, here is what Halloween really is-teach you children, so they can answer someone if they ask the question–Why are you celebrating Halloween?

The name Halloween means hallowed or holy evening because it takes palce the day before ALL SAINT’ DAY. Halloween is a time of parties for both young and old. Some schools have costume parties for the children. There are special games which are played at Halloween, such as bobbing for apples and telling fortunes and ghost stories.

Many superstitions and symblols are connected with Halloween. The Irish have a tale about the origin of jack-o’-lanterns. They say that a man named Jack was unable to enter heaven because he had to walk the earth with his lantern until Judgment Day.

The Druids, an order of priest in ancient Gaul and Britain, believe that on Halloween, ghosts. spirits, fairies, witches and elves came out to harm people. They thought the cat was sacred and believed that cats had once been human beings but were changed as a punishment for evil deeds. From these Druidic beliefs comes the present-day use of witches, ghosts and cats in halloween festivities.

The Druids had an autumn festival called Samhain, or summer’s end. It was an occassion for feasting on all the kinds of food which had been grwon during the summer. The custom of using leaves, pumpkins, and cornstalks as Halloween decoration comes from the Druids. The early peoples of
Europe also had a festival similar to the Druid holiday.

In the 700’s, the Roman Catholic Church named November 1 as ALL SAINTS’ DAY. The old pagan customs and the Crhistian feast day were combined into the Halloween festival.

There you have it! The Real Facts about Halloween–go out and enjoy yourselves tonight, and make it a safe and wonderful Halloween.

I was watching TV last week, and they told the story of why we don’t have enough HINI Swine Flu Vaccine. It was very interesting because they showed how it was made. It is made with eggs, can you believe it! They had all these EGGS around, and they take off the top of the egg and grow the vaccine right in the top of the egg.

The reason we don’t have enough of the HINI Swine Flu vaccine to go around is that the HINI Swine Flu vaccine grows so much slower than the other types of Flu Vaccines. They didn’t realize this until they started growing it. Did you wonder why they always ask you if you are alergic to EGGS? Well, this is the reason–The HINI SWINE FLU VACCINE is grown on the top of the eggs.

I believe this HINI Swine Flu to be safe to have, but always check with your Doctor before doing anything that can help or harm your health.

Grow HINI SWINE FLU vaccine–Grow fast!

Is the HINI Swine Flu Shot or Mist Safe?

Here is an excerpt I found on the AARP site.

The only difference between this one and the seasonal flu shots is the virus it is made from, so we have no reason to believe this one will be any less safe,” he said.

Pharmaceutical researchers around the globe are trying to find newer and speedier ways to make flu vaccines, but in the U.S., the only FDA-approved method is the original, 1940s way: injecting the virus into chicken eggs to be grown into larger quantities.

For the arm-shot vaccine, the virus eventually is harvested from the eggs, killed and chopped into segments. When injected into the recipient, it activates the body’s immune system to produce antibodies that kill the actual flu virus if the recipient is exposed.

The alternative, nasal-spray vaccine is made using a live virus. It too is grown in eggs, but at lower temperatures, weakening or “attenuating” it so it can survive only in the nose, not at greater body temperatures in the lungs.

“The nasal vaccine infects the mucosal cells (in the nose), which are closely monitored by our immune system,” said Patrick Wilson, a University of Chicago immunologist. Once that system detects the vaccine, Wilson said, it produces permanent immunity to the targeted flu virus.

Both seasonal flu and a pandemic HINI strain–the swine flu–will strike many Americans this season. Many are confused about how to protect themselves.

Here are some things you can do.
1. Get your annual flu shot-Flu vaccine is available now-don’t put it off–get it now
2. Ask your doctor about the swine flu vaccine–all young people age 6 months to 24 years and pregnant women–get this vaccine first. If you are 25-64 and have a chronic illness such as asthma or heart disease should think about getting this vaccine also. Older men and women could have some immunity to this virus.
3. Treat flu symptoms–Fever, sore throat, body aches, coughing, and runny nose are symptoms of the flu–stay home and get plenty of rest and fluids. The test for swine flu is currently reserved for seriously ill, but that could change. Most people have recovered from both types of flu without treatment.
4. Stay informed–Check the latest developments http://healthtools.aarp.org/adamcontent/h1n1-swine-influenza at and find seasonal flu vaccination locations at the American Lung Ass locator www.flucliniclocator.org/

When a friend or family member is diagnosed with cancer, your life can be thrown into turmoil. To he

When a friend or family member is diagnosed with cancer, your life can be thrown into turmoil. To help keep you grounded, stop and consider these 5 points:

It’s not your fault. However tempted you are to believe that the cancer is caused by something you did or failed to do, this is extremely unlikely to be the case. You are not to blame.

It’s not your job to make them well. If you are a parent of a child with cancer, you will be likely to be involved with making decisions about their treatment. In any other case, the person with cancer will choose the best course in consultation with the team of health professionals they want to involve. There is a lot that they can do to affect the outcome of their illness. You may be called upon to offer support and assistance, but getting well is their job and theirs alone.

They are still the same person they were before the cancer. They are facing a challenge and their personality may change as a result – either for a short time or permanently. But they have not suddenly become a lesser person, or a victim.

It is ok (in fact it’s important) to get support for yourself. You may assume that all help and support should be directed towards the person with cancer – but you are also facing a challenge. The more supported you feel, the better you will cope. The better you cope, the more support you will be able to offer in turn.

You can make a difference. Even though you may feel helpless and out of control, there is a lot you can do. The actions you take and the words you say can affect both the person with cancer and other friends and family members positively. You really can help.

These points are taken from the booklet ‘Cancer – Back to Basics : First Questions Answered for Family and Friends’. This booklet is available to download free at the Families Facing Cancer website.

Large Hadron Collider

Introduction:
Large Hadron Collider is a huge set up located near Geneva, Switzerland, it covers the border between Switzerland and France about 100 m underground. It is made for brilliant Experiments to take place. It is a highly organized and sophisticated structure. Within LHC there are various Experiments that started initially (ATLAS, ALICE, CMS and LHCb).There are many other experiments (Non-LHC experiments) that are take place within this underground 100m deep space as well. However, the goal, for these Experiments is to understand the creation itself and how our MULTI-VERSE operates.
Physicists from around the globe are working at LHC at almost all times and are involved in different experiments. The questions that LHC dares to answer are quite singular in their nature. For E.g. LHC is looking for a particle called ‘Higgs Boson’ predicted by Higgs in his theory. It is theorized that this particle is a reason for ‘MASS’ in all bodies. Had this particle not been present, everything would be MASSLESS and unimaginative to our minds. If this so called Particle really exists then LHC will bring it into the picture, enlightening our knowledge and the human capacity. Other Questions that LHC will answer is the secrets of DARK MATTER and DARK ENERGY. It looks into deeper secrets and into our Creation from the point of SINGULARITY. For instance, it investigates the process that went inside the BIG BANG at the smallest fraction of time about 10-43 Seconds after the Explosion. It investigates the real nature of matter.
Gravitation seems to be the feeblest of other known forces (Electromagnetic Force, String Force, and Weak Force) but is it really a weak force or is it that we know little about it. String theory has made us familiar with more than 4 dimensions. The world around us works in 4 Dimensions (UP, DOWN, BACKWARD, FORWARD, LEFT, RIGHT and TIME) but String Theorist suggest that there are many other dimensions that we cannot see since they are smaller than we can imagine or see. Therefore, they now theorize that GRAVITY is leaking from our 3D World into other Dimension. Thus Gravity is gets weaker as it leaks into other dimension.
People believe that these Experiments are not useful, for they really don’t help the world and it is eating millions and millions of Dollars every year. Though this seems to be the case but some experiments at LHC will help cancer patients and would be useful for many other medicinal purposes as well.
Therefore, we embark on this journey that LHC promises us, for there are many other questions LHC will answer but we will have to wait for at least 2-3 years, before we have some useful DATA to tell us about the PAST, PRESENT and prepare us for the FUTURE.

The Case for Killing Granny

by Jeanie Blanton

In the September issue of “Newsweek”, there is an article called “The Case for Killing Granny by Evan Thomas. It brought back memories of both my Grandma Ollie and my mom in their last weeks of life. Both had made it into their 80s, and both had had sicknesses, but they were still living without much help until their health deteriorated so bad they needed help. Neither had any life support at the end of their life, although I was asked if I wanted them to put my mom on life support. I said no, but I wanted her fed, as I just couldn’t think of her starving to death. If you went to her house, she always got in the kitchen and started fixing you something to eat. She was in a coma for a few weeks, but did receive water and food through a machine. I have never regretted having her fed right up until the end. I remember so vividly to this day, the last day I spent with my mom. She was in a coma, but I talked to her just as if she was with me. I had to go home and cook dinner for my hubby, and I told her what I had to do. She made no movement at all, but as I walked out of the room, something told me to look back at her; she had her hand up and was waving goodbye to me. It always made me think that she did know everything I was saying to her right up the end of her life. I never saw her alive again, but was thankful for that day I spent with her, and to have her wave that one final wave goodbye to me.

I myself have instructed my family that I want no life support at all when my time comes to pass on. Evan’s article stated “Almost a third of the money spent by Medicare goes to patients in the last two years of life.” I think the

RIGHT TO DIE is a personal choice, not to be made by family or doctors, but by ones own personal choice as long as they are in their right minds. However, sometimes an older family member is not capable of making these choices. That is why a LIVING WILL is so important to complete before that choice has to be made.

Most people want to die at home, but a good alternative is HOSPICE. There they can be made comfortable, given pain medication, and be visited by loved ones. My Aunt recently died at a HOSPICE center, and it was a wonderful place for someone to spend his or her last weeks of life. If you have someone that you know will need end of life care, be sure to check out the HOSPICE in your area before you need it. Go there and check it out, and see if it will meet your needs.

Millions of people around the world are diagnosed with cancer every year. When you first hear that a family member or a friend has been diagnosed with cancer, suddenly your world changes. There are many questions at a time like this. What exactly is cancer anyway? What type of cancer do they have? What will happen to them? How will other friends and family be affected?

How do you get the information you need to find out the answers to these and other questions? As I’ve mentioned before, when you are not the person with cancer, information can be hard to get hold of, and so seem especially important. That’s why we’ve produced a Free booklet to help. It’s called ‘Cancer – Back to Basics; First Questions Answered for Family and Friends’. Getting hold of the booklet is easy – just go to Families Facing Cancer and click the link on the right hand side which says ‘Get ‘Cancer – Back to Basics’ Booklet’. Fill in the form, and watch your email. You can get access to the booklet in just minutes.

I’d be glad to get your feedback.

With best wishes,
Anne.

Who Should Get the Swine Flu Shot==HINI

With the H1N1 shot, it’s a different story. When a CDC advisory committee met in late July to come up with a list of priority groups for that vaccine, it placed people 65 and older dead-last. Instead, the committee said, the shot should go first to:

Pregnant women, whose risk of hospitalization from H1N1 flu is four times the average;

Those caring for or living with babies six months or younger, who can’t be immunized directly but need protection;

Health care and emergency services workers;

Everyone between the ages of six months and 24 years;

People ages 25 to 64 who have an underlying condition like heart disease, asthma or diabetes.

Older adults and immunity

Older adults and immunity

This means that, assuming health care providers follow the government’s guidance, healthy adults age 25 and older won’t even be offered the H1N1 flu shot until demand among priority groups has been met at the local level.

“I think the fall is going to be very confusing for people, and we’re going to need a lot of education about this,” says John Murphy, M.D., a professor of medicine and family medicine at Brown Medical School and chairman of the board of the American Geriatrics Society. “There are reasons why the CDC is recommending this priority order. So far, in late spring and early summer, we saw that the worst cases [of H1N1 flu] were not in people over the age of 55. The people who’ve been the sickest are those who are totally naïve to the virus. Older people are lucky enough to have some immunity to it.”

In tests run by the CDC, a third of blood samples from people over age 60 contained antibodies capable of fighting H1N1. An article published online July 13 in Nature reported that the very old—those who lived through the devastating 1918 influenza pandemic—had high levels of the antibodies in their blood

I found this on my AARP site—go http://bulletin.aarp.org/yourhealth/diseases/articles/america_braces_for_a_double_and_early_flu_season_.2.html

by Jeanie Blanton

I would like to know who voted for No Social Security Cost-of-living increases for the year 2010. We need to poll our Government and see who voted for this and if they are going to get a Cost-of-Living Increase for 2010. I am very upset about this, and I know anyone receiving Social Security is upset also.

We know that we pay just as much for our food, rent, electricity and etc as anyone else does. Everything is going up. They just doubled License Tags and Drivers License in Florida. Fines are going up everyday in almost every thing. Where will it all end? President Obama gave the oldies a one-time check, but then he takes it all back the next year. Where is the justice in that? It seems President Obama is playing a trick on us. You remember the one we called “Indian Giver”? Give something and then take it back– The old “Indian Giver” trick.

Let’s all stand up and be heard by our government. Write your Senator and Representative about this Cost-of-Living Increase that we aren’t going to receive.

Health Care Reform-In Agreement

by Jeanie Blanton

I found this in the AARP Bulletin, and thought I would pass it on and get your comments on it.

Key Areas of Agreement

People who already have insurance through their employer will be able to keep it.

Everyone will be required to have health insurance. That means the 46.7 million who have no coverage now will have to get it, though President Obama is pressing for a hardship exemption for those who can’t afford it. The government will likely provide health coverage through Medicaid for the very poor and subsidize private coverage for moderate –income families.

Health Care costs are rising too fast and will have to be controlled—Some key industry organizations—drug makers, doctors, and insurers—have pledged to help reduce the rate of increase in health spending by 1.5 % a year, which adds up to $2 trillion over the next 10 years. Congress may enact legislation to ensure that the industry keeps its promises.

The insurance industry needs major new federal regulation—Even industry insiders agree on this. Insurance companies have promised that if everyone is required to have insurance, they will stop discriminating against insurance applicants based o gender or preexisting conditions. Those changes will be especially important to people ages 50-64, many of whom have been rejected because of chronic illnesses.

The quality of health care needs to improve—“ We’re not kidding when we talk about prevention and quality. They really do save money and save lives,” says Sen.
Barbara Mikulski, D-Md., a member of the Senate Health Committee. Many of the efforts to improve the quality of care will begin with Medicare, both because the government controls the program and because its cost threatens the federal budget. After years of paying doctors based on the number of visits or procedures, there is widespread support in Congress for paying medical providers for the effectiveness of their work, not just the volume of work. “We need to give doctors bonuses for good health outcomes, so we’re not promoting just more treatment, but better care.” Obama recently told the American Medical Association.

Medicare’s Part D doughnut hole should shrink. Obama’s announced an agreement with the drug industry that would cut prescription drug prices by half. House Democrats have embraced a plan to completely close the gap by 2023.

The Swine Flu HINI Vaccine in 1976

In 1976, 2 recruits at Fort Dix, New Jersey, had an influenzalike illness. Isolates of virus taken from them included A/New Jersey/76 (Hsw1n1), a strain similar to the virus believed at the time to be the cause of the 1918 pandemic, commonly known as swine flu. Serologic studies at Fort Dix suggested that >200 soldiers had been infected and that person-to-person transmission had occurred. We review the process by which these events led to the public health decision to mass-vaccinate the American public against the virus and the subsequent events that led to the program’s cancellation. Observations of policy and implementation success and failures are presented that could help guide decisions regarding avian influenza. “It has been 37 years since the last influenza pandemic, or widespread global epidemic, so by historic patterns we may be due for another.” New York Times, July 17, 2005 Kilbourne in 1976 (1) noted that pandemics of influenza occur every 11 years. Since the latest prediction in the New York Times (3) suggests that after 39 years we may be overdue for a pandemic, and since 2 US senators have recently headlined the possibility observation may become a political fact. Whether it becomes a scientific fact and a policy fact is yet to be seen. Some reflections on 1976 from 2 insiders’ viewpoints may identify some of the pitfalls that public health policymakers will face in addressing potential influenza pandemics. Swine Flu at Fort Dix On February 3, 1976, the New Jersey State Health Department sent the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta isolates of virus from recruits at Fort Dix, New Jersey, who had influenzalike illnesses. Most of the isolates were identified as A/Victoria/75 (H3N2), the contemporary epidemic strain. Two of the isolates, however, were not typeable in that laboratory. On February 10, additional isolates were sent and identified in CDC laboratories as A/New Jersey/76 (Hsw1N1), similar to the virus of the 1918 pandemic and better known as “swine flu.” A meeting of representatives of the military, the National Institute of Health, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the State of New Jersey Department of Health was quickly convened on Saturday, February 14, 1976. Plans of action included heightened surveillance in and around Fort Dix, investigation of the ill recruits to determine if contact with pigs had occurred, and serologic testing of recruits to determine if spread had occurred at Fort Dix. Surveillance activities at Fort Dix gave no indication that recruits had contact with pigs. Surveillance in the surrounding communities found influenza caused by the current strain of influenza, A/Victoria, but no additional cases of swine flu. Serologic testing at Fort Dix indicated that person-to-person transmission had occurred in >200 recruits (4). In 1974 and 1975, 2 instances of humans infected with swine influenza viruses had been documented in the United States. Both persons involved had close contact with pigs, and no evidence for spread of the virus beyond family members with pig contact could be found (5). The National Influenza Immunization Program On March 10, 1976, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices of the United States Public Health Service (ACIP) reviewed the findings. The committee concluded that with a new strain (the H1N1 New Jersey strain) that could be transmitted from person to person, a pandemic was a possibility. Specifically, the following facts were of concern: 1) persons <50 years of age had no antibodies to this new strain; 2) a current interpandemic strain (A/Victoria) of influenza was widely circulating; 3) this early detection of an outbreak caused by A/New Jersey/76/Hsw1N1 (H1N1) provided an opportunity to produce a vaccine since there was sufficient time between the initial isolates and the advent of an expected influenza season to produce vaccine. In the past when a new pandemic strain had been identified, there had not been enough time to manufacture vaccine on any large scale; 4) influenza vaccines had been used for years with demonstrated safety and efficacy when the currently circulating vaccine strain was incorporated; 5) the military vaccine formulation for years had included H1N1, an indication that production was possible, and no documented adverse effects had been described. ACIP recommended that an immunization program be launched to prevent the effects of a possible pandemic. One ACIP member summarized the consensus by stating “If we believe in prevention, we have no alternative but to offer and urge the immunization of the population.” One ACIP member expressed the view that the vaccine should be stockpiled, not given. Making this decision carried an unusual urgency. The pharmaceutical industry had just finished manufacture of the vaccine to be used in the 1976–1977 influenza season. At that time, influenza vaccine was produced in fertilized hen’s eggs from special flocks of hens. Roosters used for fertilizing the hens were still available; if they were slaughtered, as was customary, the industry could not resume production for several months.
