I from time to time like to share FREE subscription information to various magazines. Often friends ask if this is legit or am I just giving out my personal information to some internet scam only to never receive the magazines promised. They are very much legit. It’s a promotional vehicle. These companies give you their product, hope you like it and then in turn they hope you pay for it in the future. It’s a good marketing strategy. I currently am receiving a free year’s subscription to Organic Gardening magazine. I love it and will absolutely buy a subscription when my free one runs out. The ONLY thing to look out for is if someone asks for your credit card info. NEVER give that in return for something free. NEVER!!! The things I post here won’t ask you for it. Have you ever been to a tropical island? I was privileged to visit one once but did not score a sweet job like Tom Cruise in the movie Cocktail and was forced to return home to Rochester. Chances are it will be a long, long time before I get to one again. So in the meantime I’ll have to settle for a free subscription to Islands magazine HERE.

Two weeks ago when I was getting ready to send out a notice to my food trend newsletter subscribers that the Autumn of issue of Topline Trends was posted, I discovered that the company that handled my subscriber list was no longer in business. Vanished. Vamoosed. Gone.

To be honest I was heart broken. Topline Trends has been building its readership for over 10 years and to lose contact with all of those loyal readers was a blow. I really didn’t know what to do. Sometimes life gives you lemons and you just don’t have a good lemonade recipe at hand. Then it hits you: you can always ask others for help. What’s the worst that can happen?  People can say ‘no’ but so what?

Recently Archbishop Cranmer had a rather entertaining run in with facebook: they didn’t like his title so he ended up signing up as Ayatollah Cranmer instead. It seems that facebook are somewhat selective over which clerical titles they discriminate against.

The good news for Archbishop Cranmer is that although he died some years ago, he’d have no such problem selecting a title if he signed up for a free Church leader’s subscription (yes, free, you read that correctly) to Christian Marketplace magazine, where you can opt for anything from Archdeacon to Wing Commander.

So as the hard economic times hit, I got to thinking how I could save money.  One of the first but most painful solutions that came to mind was the retirement of my magazine subscriptions, or just simply not renewing them.  When you have a lot of magazine subscriptions such as me, going digital can save you a lot more money. 

However, I started thinking about all the free catalogs out there such as Victoria Secret.  Now I know that Victoria Secret is an advertising catalog so that is why it is free, but why can’t magazines like Vogue also supply there’s for free.  After all, half of their magazine is a advertisement.  For example, when they do break downs of how much each item costs that the models are wearing, why can’t they make those fashion designers pay before displaying their items for free?  Then they would make as much if not more money as they do off their prescriptions, and then could provide subscriptions for free to the public.  They would actually make more money off this concept because you can subscribe to a magazine like Vogue for a whole year for only $15.  That is just a little more than one dollar per month.

A magazine such as Vogue would also generate a larger name (even though is it already pretty large) by reaching out to a greater audience.  Right now, their audience of people who purchase the magazine is comprised only of people that care about fashion and trendy topics.

As I progress through my academics and make a career out of fashion, I might look to try and revolutionize the way fashion magazines make their money.

Either way, keep finding new sources whether free or expensive to expand your fashion knowledge.

It gets better everytime! To give you a clue, I’m talking about music. So whats new? @hnprashanth gifted me a last.fm subscription! That means I can listen to non-stop, personalised radio! I also get ad-free browsing and streaming & listen to stations of music I’ve loved/tagged. I’m loving it so far!

So seems like north India has cooled down atlast. I’m getting to see pictures of rain everywhere. Thats good. The weather down here in Bangalore is pleasant [as always] but the only biggest annoying thing are the power cuts. Whats worse is that they don’t cut it on one go, like for a few hours continuously. They cut it every 5- 20 minutes and just when you feel happy that its back, puff! It goes again. In the meantime, I get completely lost and fidgety and act drunk trying to throw things at my poor grandma :-|

Give me some suggestions as to what I can do during the power cuts? Please don’t say “read” coz I have already read 4 books by Sheldon and am currently reading “A Thousand Splendid Suns” [I simply can't get to finish this, it is too sad and too plain. Not my type]. My mom thinks learning to cook is a good idea. I do not want to chop vegetables, mix spices and fry them till they get brown/black/whatever!!! Holidays get worse with power cuts. Humph.

 Today, while I was viewing the exhibits at the NMSA conference, I came across a very interesting magazine. The magazine is specifically for Latino teens and is appropriately named LàTeen. LàTeen was originally created by a class of 8th graders and their teacher. At this time, I do not know all of the details as to how the magazine became what it is today. There is a website to accompany LàTeen, but it is still under construction. However, you can visit www.lateen.com and register your school or classroom for a free 6-month subscription (must have tax id). Teens or Youth can also register for an individual free 6-month subscription.

LàTeen Magazine contains articles in Spanish and English (the same article is not featured in both languages). The articles are about fashion, sports, famous Latinos, and much more. I look forward to receiving my first copy to read through and report back on some ways to incorporate this magazine into the classroom. Information still has to get around, and even though I like to read the New York Times on my iPhone in the bathroom, I am still partial to a real, honest-to-goodness magazine to hold onto and distract me when I am having quiet time in the morning. Also, I don’t have to worry about dropping my $300 investment in the toilet.

I’d love to take credit for the re-emergence of Terrible Terry Tate from the post we randomly put up a couple days ago (or weeks? It all blurs together), but it doesn’t matter. He’s back, and he’s spreading the truth. What seems at first to be Palin explaining what newspaper she pretends to read turns out to be a Tate voting advocacy ad. For those that don’t catch what he says as he interrupts Palin mid-bullshit, here’s a transcript:
