Am quoting directly from the petition so as to better explain the issue to those unfamiliar.

On August 11, 2009 Freedom Scientific announced its “Secure and Compatible Braille Display Initiative” which it says is being introduced in the name of security with respect to its JAWS for Windows screen access program. This announcement may be found at:

http://www.freedomscientific.com/news/pressroom/2009/secure-compatible-braille-displays.asp

The announcement explains that, “The goal of this new program is to follow Microsoft's move to signed drivers to improve security and compatibility for customers who use a Braille display.”

According to Freedom Scientific, this policy will go into effect with the 64-bit version of JAWS 11, which is soon to be released; Users of 32-bit versions of the Windows operating system will not be affected.

In the same article, Freedom Scientific points out that “most new computers now come with 64-bit Microsoft Windows preinstalled,” implying that in the very near future, it will no longer be possible to purchase a new computer with the 32-bit version of the Windows operating system.

Put into layman terms, Braille displays require a screen reader in order to work. Freedom Scientific has steadfastly refused to provide Braille display manufacturers with the driver development kit required to enable a particular Braille device to communicate with JAWS. Instead, the manufacturer must first pay an outrageous sum of money before support for the Braille device will be permitted. What's more, this charge to the Braille display manufacturer is not a one-time fee but is imposed annually.

In his article posted to the GW Micro Blog entitled A Thought on Braille Driver Signing, posted on August 15, 2009, Doug Geoffray, lead developer of the

Window-Eyes screen reader wrote:

“I have a hard time accepting the concept of requiring digitally signed

Braille drivers in the name of security when the JAWS mirror driver itself

isn't digitally signed by Microsoft.”

You will find Mr. Geoffray's article in its entirety at:

http://www.gwmicro.com/blog/index.php/all/?title=a-thought-on-braille-driver -signing more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1#c434

One might ask how Freedom Scientific can play the gatekeeper to its JAWS product where Braille driver support is concerned. The answer is simply and for no other reason because it can. It is certainly not because Freedom Scientific's Braille displays in and of themselves offer any higher level of security.

This petition contends that Freedom Scientific's Braille driver signing program is not in the best interest of consumers and will only serve to harm the Braille reading community as a whole.

In the September, 2009 FScast, a Podcast produced by freedom Scientific Product Manager and Host Jonathan Mosen, Mr. Mosen asked Glen Gordon, Freedom Scientific's Chief Technology officer, if he%2

via Opposing Freedom Scientific's Secure and Compatible Braille Display Initiative Petition.

The article goes on… But the part I’d copied and pasted was cut off and unfortunately I don’t have the energy to go back and repaste it, you can view the entire article at link above. As a Jaws user, and a fairly satisfied one at that (except when it comes time to upgrade and I have to spend oodles of money to do it, which my husband even just finished railing about when we got the letter that the warranty on my Braille display had expired and they wanted me to pay $385 to renew it, even though it won’t cover accidents, only maintenance), I feel really defensive when Freedom Scientific does this, especially when on email lists and blogs I read comments like “I’m a proud Window Eyes user and GW Micro would never do anything like this”, etc. I feel like that by using FS products that we that use them are somehow implicitly supporting their business practices. Or that we, by our use of their products, agree with what they are doing. I, for one, don’t. However, I use Jaws at work and at home, Jaws can do things, in my opinion, that no other screen reader can do, or I’ve not been able to get it to do said “things”, and I really don’t have the money to switch to another screen reader, except for System Access, and while we’re on the subject of System Access, they only support *one* kind of Braille display, the name of which I can’t remember right now. So while Freedom Scientific is going to require digitally signed drivers, SA is saying that if you want to use Braille with their screen reader, you can only use the Braille display that they’ve decided they want to support, because, if I’m understanding it correctly, they are trying to push the assistive technology market in another direction, i.e., having Braille displays utilize generic Windows device drivers instead of proprietary drivers for each display.

And to be honest, I’m not sure what the difference is, other than Jaws used to work with certain Braille displays that, if they don’t digitally sign their drivers, they won’t work in the future. Whereas System Access is doing the same thing by saying that their screen reader will only support Braille displays which only use generic Windows drivers. Which means that someone like me, who can’t afford to purchase the Braille display that System Access is supporting, just simply can’t use Braille any time I want to use System Access. So the same goes with Jaws for Windows, meaning that if you have a Braille display wich doesn’t have digitally signed drivers, then Jaws won’t work with that display.

In any case, I can’t say I’m particularly happy with SA’s decision, just as many aren’t happy with FS’s decision, however, I don’t see, or haven’t seen, anyone crowing about Serotek’s decision to exclude the majority of Braille displays from being supported, unless and until they “do the right thing” according to Serotek (the makers of System Access) and start using generic drivers.

I don’t like Serotek’s decision, but I still use their products, and I have no plans to boycot them, as many are considering doing with FS. But I suspect that much of this has to do with a general “hatred” of anything FS, as many consider them to have a monopoly and thus an unfair advantage in the screen-reader market.

Some of us have already ventured into the mac world, I’m a mere baby I have to say, only being

Some of us have already ventured into the mac world, I’m a mere baby I have to say, only being involved with mac since last October and I only bought one because I was tired of MS, FS Viruses and constantly having to patch things. My Sony was dying a death and I really wanted an ipod nano. After listening to a podcast done by someone on Lioncourt I decided using a mac couldn’t be that hard at all. I had seen VO in Tiger and hated it, simply because I didn’t understand it or try to understand it. The people who were demonstrating it to me were ill informed and had no clue how to use the mac OS let alone VO so I swore, like many others did that I would stick to old faithful windows and old faithful jaws. But when I had a reality check on the price of a new laptop capable of running jaws and the jaws licence itself, I nearly had a heart failure. I hopped over to the apple website and check out a macbook. the mid range macbook cost me less than a licence of jaws by 70 pounds, not including the P&P so I took the plunge and I will never go back! as long as apple keeps doing what it is doing, making its products what they are, sleek, operational out of the box and everything I could possibly want from an OS both on my computer and phone, then I will never turn my back on them.

Kiss their feet! Why not? They have done far more than any other company has attempted too. They make their products accessible to all. And that is their beauty. not to mention they have a dedicated team for accessibility. MS will eventually lose a hold on the VI community, keep upgrading their Os with yet another version needed of an expensive Screen Reader, only to still be subjected to viruses and constant patches. Apple isn’t perfect, no one will say they are, but they are ears ahead of others in their attempt. I’ve seen people complaining about their iphones, did you honestly expect perfection? This is the first touch screen phone ever available to those with a Visual impairment. Was Voice over perfect the first time around? I highly doubt it? Is it perfect now? No, of course not, but that is the perfection in it. Where their is problems, there is always progress to be made. And apple are always willing to continue their progression.

even though I am not from the US, I have lived there and been amongst people who relate to the NfB and AcB and still hear of their policies through people I interact with online. I am appalled that an organisation is suing apple. For what? For making their products accessible? Their claim is to do with Itunes on the windows side. Now Jaws 10 is accessible with Itunes, and I know this from talking to people who use Jaws and Itunes together, I see no reason why the NFB should continue to sue. GW-micro worked with apple as i understand it to make Itunes 8 accessible last year and this coincided with Apple’s own built in screen reader becoming functional with itunes on Leopard. Did FS work with Apple? No, I doubt they did. And maybe this is a jump on my part but maybe this is NFB’s way of keeping FS with a strong hold upon the VI community. But can VI computer users continue to pay out the incredible prices FS are offering? For a programme that yes, works rather well, no one will say otherwise on it’s OS, but for the price of a Jaws licence here in the UK I bought a brand new mac with a built in screen reader that neglects to have the incredible amount of issues that I had with my PC and Jaws.

I see so many windows VI users constantly having to do something to their computer to make it work. I know that when I had skype on my PC, I was forever using scripts to make Jaws work with it well. Did the NFB try and sue Skype? no, because Skype posed no threat to them. Apple have the ability to take over the technical market eventually. The more of us using a mac independently, as most of us do, the more exposure Apple get within the VI community. Now the Iphones are accessible, and I personally think they have done an outstanding job on this product, the more every day people are aware of the accessibility built into the phone. If someone we know, also has an Iphone, and they see a visually impaired person using the same phone as themselves, it addresses the continuing knowledge that Apple have worked by themselves to integrate accessibility for all.

I’ve had several experiences within the short three weeks of owning my IPhone where people have asked me questions or been amazed that I didn’t have to pay any more than they did for their phones. Why should we be penalised for the fact we have no vision? Why should we continue to support an assistive technology market that costs us as individuals, an absolute fortune? I often couldn’t afford many of the products i would like to buy. So if this trend continues, and I hope it’s passed on to other major companies, of having mainstream products include accessibility to all in their products then I shall be a happy person. I see no reason why I should have to pay any more than my sighted peers for a product when I don’t have too. And of course, there are going to be people who believe I am wrong, and that is OK. I have my opinion, and you have yours. But let me just say this. Would you pay more for a piece of food just because you are visually impaired? Why shouldn’t companies like Apple include accessibility into their products for the same price as their sighted customers? Why should we support a market just for the sake of supporting it when there are products out there in the mainstream we could buy and use at no extra cost? And why should an organisation that is meant to be supporting the blind and Visually impaired stand in the way of those companies attempting to do what they can to make their products accessible? Why pick at the smallest thing you can find wrong and create a legal case about it? Shouldn’t these organisations work with this company to help the visually impaired community? We all know that many VI users can operate a mac, ipod nano, ipod shuffle and now the Iphone with no sighted assistance, so why does the NfB continually try to discount these facts? They are facts. no one can deny that. People operate these products both at a professional and personal level each and every day. I can only draw the conclusion that the NFB are aware of this but do not want to admit it for underlying reasons.

To those individuals who enjoy windows and their chosen screen reader, I’m glad for you. That is your choice. But please stop discounting the wonders what apple have done for not just our community but so many others. It is trying and that is far more than I can say about so many others. Would I kiss apple’s feet? Possibly not, but I would like to thank them and applaud what they have done, and continue to do for me as an avid computer and general technology user. What they have done is beyond my expectations and the thing is, I know in my apple shaped heart, there is so much more to come.

To the NFB, ACB, and to anyone who discounts what apple are doing, just sit back and wait and see, because I guarantee, there are greater things to come from this company who are about all of their customers, not just the general population.

The following reported items were addressed in this update. All enhancements since the initial public beta release are included in the update.

JAWS

AVG Anti-Virus 8.0 software no longer fails when you start the application while JAWS is running.

Resolved an issue where several customers reported installation error #824 when trying to install JAWS after running some a registry cleaner. This problem no longer occurs with versions 9.0.2169 and later.

AOL Instant Messenger

The aimhelper.jsh file is now again included with JAWS 9.0. This file refers to constants and global variables used by the AOL Instant Messenger help file script.

Microsoft Excel

JAWS now retains and reads column and row titles that you set in multiple Excel worksheets. Before, when you returned to the previous worksheet, JAWS would not announce column and row titles (CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+C and CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+R).

Microsoft Internet Explorer

After selecting the Skip to Content link on the Social Security Administration Web page, JAWS now consistently moves to the next link when you press TAB.

When you press ENTER to turn Forms Mode off, it now turns off as the Web page refreshes and updates.

Microsoft Office

JAWS no longer repeats the column and row information when navigating by line (UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW) in a one row, one column table.

Microsoft Outlook

When moving through a menu tree list of folders in Outlook, JAWS correctly announces folder names as you use the ARROW keys to navigate the list. Earlier, JAWS would say scroll down symbol or scroll up symbol instead of the folder name.

When navigating the list of folders in the Move Items dialog box (CTRL+SHIFT+V) and the Copy Items dialog box (CTRL+SHIFT+Y), JAWS no longer announces blank as you move from one folder to another.

E-mail messages no longer close when you select and copy message text using the APPLICATION Key’s Copy command.

Microsoft PowerPoint

JAWS correctly reads text that is typed into PowerPoint edit fields (for example, the File name field in the Open dialog box) when you use the Say Line command (INSERT+UP ARROW). Previously, JAWS would announce blank.

Microsoft Word

JAWS now announces the Word Count dialog box statistics when you press ALT+T, W in Word 2007 or Word 2003 documents.

JAWS now recognizes and announces when text wraps to the next line in any text editor, word processor, or Web page when using the Say All command with the read new line character function turned on. The User Reads Text Containing New Line Character check box is in the Text Processing dialog box of the Configuration Manager. When it is selected, JAWS announces the words new line while reading and moving to the next line of text in sentences and paragraphs.

If upgrading from a version of JAWS prior to JAWS 9, visit:

http://www.freedomscientific.com/downloads/jaws/jaws9-downloads.asp

If upgrading from an earlier build of JAWS 9, you can run the Check for Updates in the JAWS Program.

1. Press INSERT+J to bring up the JAWS program

2. Arrow Down to Help

3. Arrow Down to Check for Updates

4. It will take a while to search, when JAWS 9.0.2169 appears, press the SPACEBAR to check it and press ENTER.

5. It will then download and install JAWS 9.0.2169.

6. Once complete, it will prompt you to press ENTER to Restart the Computer.

Google Reader and Firefox

Assalamu alaikum, have started playing with Google Reader and Firefox, both of which I’d tried

Assalamu alaikum, have started playing with Google Reader and Firefox, both of which I’d tried before but for some reason just couldn’t really get into at the time. I’m not sure if it’s because Jaws didn’t work as well with them at the time, if those programs didn’t have the features I liked, or some of both.

At any rate, I really like Google Reader. With the exception of the Gambian news sites I find myself visiting on at least a semi-regular basis (which would be The Gambia Journal, The Gambia Echo, and <a href=”http://www.senegambianews.com”), which don’t to my knowledge have RSS feeds, I can put most of my blogs and news sites all in one place, and I’m finding that doing that saves quite a bit of time. I like using Google Reader because no matter where I go, or which computer I use, all of my feeds/sites will be in one places. And that is cool.

I’m also playing with Firefox, and it seems that Jaws has implemented a lot of the IE commands into the Firefox browser, so it makes the transition from IE to Firefox that much easier. In fact, I don’t have the usual frustration that I have when moving from one program to another.

I really like the add-ons, and I don’t find the tabbed browsing as bulky and unwieldy as it seems to be with IE, as sometimes if you open up a bunch of tabs in ie, the browser kinda has a fit and crashes. Maybe it’s a Jaws thing or maybe it’s my computer I don’t know.

Since I’ve not really taken Firefox through it’s paces yet, I can’t really tell you any more pros or cons, except when you’re using Gmail, for example, when you’re in standard mail view, with Firefox you still have to route the Jaws cursor to the PC cursor when you want to click on a message to read it, whereas with IE you don’t have to do this anymore. So it seems that the ajax support with Jaws and Firefox is lacking somewhat. Also, when you click on something in Gmail, while in Firefox, it seems to take a while to update itself, or I should say, for Jaws to update for you. For example, if I hit archive or delete on a message, it takes it a while to show that a message has been archived and that it’s gone back to your inbox or your label if you’re looking at a group of labelled messages.

Perhaps this is oemthing that Freedom Scientific could address in future releases, or maybe it’s a firefox issue, I don’t know, but these are just minor annoyances to me really. But it would still be nice if I didn’t have to take these extra steps to click on these kinds of links, as I don’t have to in IE.

what’s up? wsupp? wsupp? wsupp? supp? ssup? ssup? wassup? huh guys, what on earth is up? Well,

what’s up?

wsupp? wsupp? wsupp? supp? ssup? ssup? wassup? huh guys, what on earth is up?

Well, this is a place, I guess in my humble opinion that I have to give you the late-breaking news of what I’m up to. Did someone just say breaking? Huh? I hope that was not my tea cup

:p

:p

Anyway, It’s wednesday. Woo hoo though, french coursework is like done! like first draft is completed like one week ago, and today I completed second draft! Yay, At least in june, when I do my exams, I won’t have to write some bloody stupid french passage abut some shitty little thing, and all it’s is reading, listening, and speaking. Yay!

speaking of exams though, its gonna be different this year. Like its not exactly GCSE’s but just preparations for them. Serously, Wtf is wrong with jaws and wordpress? Anyway, this is what I’m hoping for:

English:

<litterature: B

language: B

science: A

mathematics: C

religious studdies: A star

History: good B or possibly A

French: C or B

German: C

finally ICT: A

I’m hoping to get a B in french, so I can be well prepared for the exam. History, english and religious studdies are all subjects in which I am very confident in, as well as enjoying those subjects out of school so for that reason, I am aming for high grades in those subjects. ICT is just too easy, the only problem with most schools are that they are obsessed with microsoft and think they are the best. As for mathematics, I’m not at all aming for some thing high, as I absolutely suck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! in that subject. It’s too visual and all that bla, but I’m not gonna go in to that here. Ok, so for languages, Well, really I need to expand my vocabulary a bit more, I guess, and do a bit more revision. Science is the second part of my modular GCSE, and if I memorise my textbook, like I did in the first instance, I’m sure to get a good mark, hopefully.

So, that is these two months planned nicely. I shouldn’t go on the computer too much, so I’m thinking of putting my self on nomail on the lists. There is this wordpress issue still, :p:p: :d:d with catigories and advanced options, But I think wp tech support is good to sort this out. If not, then I’ll post a message to the blind-access list and with all the details and bla. I’m actually working in wordpresses visual editor, and to be frankly honest, freedom scientific have made drastic, and I mean drastic!… improvements in HTML textarea’s when typing. Anyway, see ya soon.

Current mood: tired.

Current location: home on the laptop, feel like I wanna sleep! Omg, gotta do maths homework still!
