Sacramento Lifeguard Academy held its annual Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) recertification training for local area lifeguard managers at Samuel Pannell Meadowview Community Center on March 24,2012. Training was held at 2450 Meadowview Road.

Course Includes:

• Adult, Child, & Infant (CPR), both 1 and 2 rescuer scenarios
• Rescue Breathing and the use of a pocket mask and bag-valve mask
• Foreign-Body Airway Obstruction (Choking)
• Automated External De-fibrillation (use of an AED)

       March 31, 2012, the Power Gym USA in Rancho Cordova, CA, hosted the Battle of the Badges boxing event with Nor Cal titles on the line. Battle of the Badges was an event exclusively for fighters that are also members of law enforcement, firefighting and the U.S. military. Top ranked United Combat Association (UCA) fighter Julie “J-Cat” Williams (CDCR- SAN QUENTIN) tested her top ranking against boxing newcomer Stacie Woienski (CDCR-DVI) in a bout for a UCA Nor Cal title.

“I want her belt,” Woienski told SRMMA before her title fight. “I’m grateful for this opportunity, but I go to the gym and train hard to go every round if necessary. I came to bang with her the whole fight if I have to.”

       Although a top ranked amateur fighter against a newcomer to the sport may seem like a bit of an unfair bout, UCA rankings Chairman and Battle of the Badges matchmaker Tom Gaffney assured SR that he was more than confident in the competition that Woienski would provide for Williams in a title bout.

“I always look to produce the most fair matches I can,” Gaffney said to SR at the weigh in. “Experience is good to have, but finding fighters that want to fight is the best for a matchmaker.”

Woienski looked to make a statement in her debut bout by coming out aggressively, employing jab-hook combos while using head movement to avoid counters. The first round was a strong showing for the newcomer as she landed quality shots that caught Williams off guard.

“She landed some clean punches… By far my toughest opponent,” Williams told SRMMA. “Grimz Gym (Sacramento, CA) is the best training anyone can ask for. . . so my mental preparation stems from my training.”

       By the second round, Williams was able to find Woienski’s head and land some hard right hands, visibly stunning her opponent. Woienski wasn’t able to make a comeback, as she continued to get wobbled by Williams’ accurate fists. However, Williams couldn’t summon the energy to finish her off.

“I didn’t capitalize on how stunned she was… I had no wind beneath my wings,” Williams said.

       Nevertheless, while Williams showed why she’s ranked the top in her division, Woienski never lost heart, at one time continuing to come forward swinging on rubber like legs at times in round three. Woienski landed multiple punches in the third round that had Williams covering up and looking to drop her pace at times, Williams told SR that her footwork was something she thought worked well for her in the first half of the fight, but she didn’t have the wind needed to follow up on that movement at different points of the fight. Woienski felt confident in her amateur boxing future, and has no intention of quitting for a while.

“I feel it was a fair decision,” Woienski told SRMMA post fight. “In two weeks (since she accepted the fight) I feel like I just performed with the best they had to offer me tonight. It was awesome.”
