As a Buyer, you can encourage your Freelancer to create an ongoing way to replicate his success strategy even when he’s not forced to do so by circumstances. The key to creating a sustaining work relationship with a Freelancer is to show the person why a successful project is always important. Providing constant feedback will encourage him to duplicate or work properly on a project. However, if you are always telling him to stop working on a project the way he likes, his instinctive reaction is either to defend what he is doing and continue as before or to focus so hard on not doing it that his behavior may appear uncomfortable or contrived. It’s essential to find ways to encourage and reinforce positive change.

•	Judiciously negotiate projects’ goals with him
•	Regularly give him the feedback he needs to self-correct and keep going
•	When he succeeds, celebrate with him from time to time.

Dealing with a Freelancer is not an easy task. In order to motivate him, you have to think about intrinsic motivators. What it is that makes him go the extra miles? These are motivators that reflect people’s internal beliefs and values about their place in the world and how the world works. A Freelancer, who believes in hard work, bringing innovation and creativity to a project, will do his best when offered an opportunity.

However, a Freelancer who is only interested in money, perks, will avoid challenges and find excuses, when a project is not fully completed.

Many businesses have realised that some of the best freelancers they work with are attracted to altruistic opportunities as well as intellectual challenges and money.

Once you have outsourced more than two projects to a Freelancer, start paying attention to motivators. What are they interested in, ask them questions and make sure to use both intrinsic and extrinsic motivators, and use them judiciously. You can then motivate a Freelancer in the way that suits him best.

Herzlichst

Another incident on the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) hits YouTube, and the world is once again aski

Another incident on the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) hits YouTube, and the world is once again asking the question if BART Police are using too much force, the police acted appropriately, or if BART passengers simply recorded a snapshot in time that could be interpreted at a later date. In the past, to find out what happened during an incident such as the most recent BART scuffle, you would be dependent on a newspaper’s beat journalist to hang around a police station. He’d get a copy of the official police report, perhaps talk with one of his friends on the force, and transcribe what he gathered.

Now news and media are real time. You can get Twitter tweets and video feeds from mobile phones, laptop computers, and reporters on the scene with CNN (or other international news sources). In many cases even established news outlets are starting to heavily rely on “stringers,” or freelancers to provide on-scene raw video for later interpretation by news readers. Nearly every news outlet today asks for viewers to send their “i-Reports” and videos to supplement news reports, and to reduce the amount of time from incident to broadcast.

A very different world from the days of Walter Cronkite, when the evening news would be a well-edited account from a distant reporter, formatted for the time allotted by network news, and face news competition by only a couple other networks (in the United States that would include CBS, NBC, ABC, and PBS).

The Biased Media

Media outlets have changed as well, moving from being a 5WH (who, why, what, when, where, how) style of reporting to networks such as Fox, openly stating they present a “conservative” point of view (Huckabee, Hannity, Beck, etc). This means in many cases viewers who prefer a certain point of view will be presented with interpretation of news events which support their beliefs.

It is also becoming more difficult to determine whether a news story is actually a press release or advertisement, rather than hard news. Even when a government organization or company is interviewed following some event or incident, the person interviewed is generally a professional public relations specialist, who may not find presentation of fact as a desired outcome of the interview.

Citizen Journalism Tends to be Pure

In most cases, when a freelancer or citizen records an event, they provide that record of the even in its raw, or pure state. If you see a home video of a tornado on CNN, then most likely the person providing that video is not providing commentary, only the video. When we were receiving near real-time cell phone video from Tehran during the recent violence following elections, most of the video received came out as quickly as possible, and was then processed in its raw form through venues such as YouTube.

All we really ask from the citizen journalist, to give their story or record of an event credibility, is:

An unedited record or account of the event

A reference of the event recording’s origin

A factual context of the event (who, when, where)

We do not always need a deep analysis of an event by a reporter or analyst who’s motivation may be based on how sensational they can make the event, which political or religious ideology they should promote when presenting an event, or their own personal opinion. The main thing we need is context, and enough information to allow us to respond to the news if needed (such as during an emergency or other condition).

Media Changes

David Sasaki, in a recent PBS IdeaLab article walked through the changes in media over the past 550 years. Starting with transcribing bibles for the Catholic Church and aristocracy, and walking through the social changes driven by innovations such as the Gutenberg press, radio, television, and newspapers, Sasaki presents a very compelling argument for embracing change. Whether it be eliminating unnecessary reporters and editors, or better understanding the impact of social media and “publics” created through a global-connected community, we need to understand the dynamics of media change to develop a vision of how news media and information transfer may evolve.

In the 1960s you would watch even local news stations for the “Evening News,” and you would get a solid 30 minutes of reporting on national, international, and local news. Today, if you watch news programs such as CNN’s Headline news, you might get 3 or 4 minutes of hard news, and then 25 minutes of human interest stories filling out the rest of a segment.

It is becoming increasingly difficult for us to interpret news from marketing, fact from advertising and public relations, or gaining access to raw news.

Chaos Theory and Media

Chaos Theory states that any system is vulnerable to changing conditions either within or encroaching on the system. If the current or historical media systems are an example, we can see innovation or technologies (such as the Gutenberg press, Internet, paper, radio) as a significant disruptor to the media “system.”

The Internet is currently a very disruptive element to traditional media, as it provides a platform for applications such as YouTube, Twitter, instant messaging, and other utilities to provide either real-time, or near real-time one-to-one, one-to-many, or many-to-many communications. On a global scale.

The other disruptor is the fact young people have internet-enabled technologies fully diffused into their education and life, allowing the new “Generation Z” visibility into new communication concepts that prior generations may not yet comprehend, or may never comprehend. What will come out of this diffusion of knowledge into Gen Z-ers? Impossible to know, but it will no doubt potentially be as huge an event as the Gutenberg press was to the world of the 1400s.

A generation where the people are the news, create the news, consume the news, and provide the news. There will be casualties as we re-organize media outlets which no longer adequately support the 21st century, but the result will be really, really exciting.

Gen-Z youth are not mentally restrained by the technical limitations and legacy of existing broadcast and print media. With their diffused knowledge and operation of existing and emerging technologies, they have a “clean slate” to develop new models of media, news, social interaction, and global presence. As “baby boomers,” we need to continue creating the tools our fledgling Generation Z needs to envision ways to exploit our technology, and further build our global presence and instant access to that news and information they need to live in a wired world.

f you’re looking for ways to make money from home, freelance work can be the ideal solution. Freelance opportunities will offer you the ability to take on part time jobs you can do from home that will fit around your schedule. No matter what kind of skills you have, you can easily put your talents and experience to work doing part time freelance jobs. Make Money With EarthLnce Here are some tips to help you learn how to make money with online freelance jobs you can do from home in your spare time.

The first step in learning how to make money with online freelance jobs is to decide what type of work you’re interested in doing. Do you want to use the skills you already have or learn how to do something new? Many freelancers choose to do several different types of work. If your background is as an administrative assistant, you could do virtual assistant work, appointment setting, data entry or typing, internet research, answer emails, or even do freelance customer assistant work. If you enjoy writing, you could do freelance writing for websites, write for ezines or newsletters, or even take up freelance copywriting. If your background is in the legal field, you could do freelance legal writing or research work. If you’re creative and technologically inclined, you could design websites or get into freelance graphic design. The possibilities for online freelance jobs are endless.

Do some research
Once you’ve decided what type of work you’d be interested in doing, you might want to do some online research to find out what the job market is like for freelancers in your chosen field. For example, the competition for freelance writing jobs online is a lot more fierce than the competition for virtual assistant jobs. However, the amount of jobs being offered to virtual assistants is a lot fewer than the amount of jobs available for freelance writers. You’ll have to decide how much time you want to spend looking for work and how much work you’ll need to do to earn the paycheck you want.

Start looking for work
If you’ve already got some contacts or people you could propose your freelance services to, you might want to start there. Otherwise, you can start looking for freelance jobs online. One of the biggest secrets of how to make money with online freelance jobs is finding jobs that pay well. There are many online job boards you can search to find freelance work. Freelance membership sites are often the best way to go when searching for freelance jobs, because they don’t have as much competition as other job boards. Many new freelancers get their starts finding work at membership sites.

GoFreelance is the perfect place to find freelance jobs/work. The GoFreelance job boards are full of opportunities for part time freelance work ranging from freelance writing to data entry, virtual assistant work to graphic design to programming. There are hundreds of available jobs posted at Go Freelance every week, so you can be sure to find lots of interesting jobs to keep you set in a steady income. Plus, as a Go Freelance member, you’ll get exclusive access to ebooks and special reports to help you learn how to make money with online freelance jobs.

Part I here. (aka “Previously, on Origins…”) “An ordinary boy an ordinary na

Part I here. (aka “Previously, on Origins…”)

“An ordinary boy an ordinary name

But ordinary’s just not good enough today”

So we continued down the beach, Cokes in hand. Barely adolescent, but twelve feet tall and staggering. Awkward? Not so much. I’d lived and breathed the word “awkward”, it was intrinsic in every move I made and every thought that passed through my hyper-nervous orb. I raise eyebrows in the clumsy effort to tie my shoes. But not that night.

Clark Kent is awkward because his meekness is his interpretation of and attempt to fit in with humanity. Most people are cowardly, always frightened, and looking up for a savior. If he was Superman all the time, he’d never get a moment’s rest, sticking out from the human race like a sore, gaudy, blue, red, and yellow thumb. Put him back on Krypton with other Kryptonians in their heydey and he’s just an average joe. There’s a camouflage and peace of mind in becoming nondescript.

However, Superman was never a 12 year old human boy.

Here, now, in this distant new place, surrounded by strangers as far as I could see, no one could ever know my faults. They would never be let on to my shortcomings, for those were back there, 2,000 miles West of this boardwalk. Every single person who doubted, scorned, mocked, disdained me for everything I was to them was gone. Geography has a funny effect on the mind. My life, the bookish, sports averse, iconoclastic coward that I self-identified as was back in Nebraska. This place wasn’t like back in the parochial classrooms where my interaction with women had been with the 15 or so girls in my grade school class who had conditioned me early on from showing any interest in any of them. I had previously been punished socially, for being the “creep” who had the audacity to be attracted to the prettier girls in class.

Here, it occurred to me that not only could I act like someone else, shit, I could be someone else.

I could be me, really, and this girl sipping her Coke was still smiling when I smiled at her. And she was prettier than any of the girls in my class or any girl really that I had met before. I loved her for that.

Not only was an interesting girl interested in me, but the mere fact of her interest was a giant “FUCK YOU!” to everyone who’d ever tried to label me or intentionally or not, cast me as a romantic pariah.

We leaned on the boardwalk railing shoulder to shoulder facing the sea, and talked. In retrospect, it occurs to me now that when couples talk but don’t face each other, there’s an underlying tension causing it, for the most part. But I was 12 and she, 13. We were making up social norms as we went along. Nothing seemed out of bounds or inappropriate.

I wasn’t offended when she asked if everyone from Nebraska was a hick, and she blushed when I asked if everyone from Virginia was either in the Navy or a complete redneck.

Because music can be a huge memory cue, I remember the top 40 hits of the summer of 1994 to this day, with fairly decent accuracy. A lot of them are godawful by today’s standards, for instance “If You Go” by Jon Secada, and “Always” by Erasure. (I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.) But the song that I dug the most on the charts that year was the ballad “Till I Fall Away” by the Grunge-lite Pop band Gin Blossoms. Grunge had just hit the mainstream with the release of Nirvana’s Nevermind and Pearl Jam’s Ten, and it was already being diluted into top 40 by bands like the Gin Blossoms. Nevertheless, that song came on somebody’s sandy boombox, and I turned to Lauren and said “I love this song.”

She grabbed my hand again and pulled me along the boardwalk then down a waterlogged and repainted wooden ramp that looked like a repurposed dock leading onto the sand. She scurried under the thing and waved me in. “C’mon!” she ordered. I joined her and we laid back against a wooden post. The first rocket popped up, and when the charge starburst, all eyes on the beach went skyward as the show started. She closed the distance between us, whispering “I hate fireworks” with her last audible breath, and shoved us off into the warm, soft depths of our first kiss. Hearts raced, and my mind, taking all this in, was redlining. Time slowed, dilated. Entire generations lived and died throughout the duration that Lauren and I shared, but that kiss was forever and yet, we only aged about 40 minutes.

Coming back up for air, our lips parted as our hands locked. Our eyes met, and exhausted, we could barely say it.

“I love you.”

“I love you.”

We dove back in.

Hello
I’ve waited here for you
Everlong

Tonight
I throw myself into
And out of the red, out of her head she sang

Come down
And waste away with me

Down with me

Slow how
You wanted it to be
I’m over my head, out of her head she sang

And I wonder
When I sing along with you
If everything could ever feel this real forever

If anything could ever be this good again

The only thing I’ll ever ask of you
You’ve got to promise not to stop when I say when
She sang

The night and our fervor took us a bit further, sufficient to allow me some semi-exclusive locker room bragging rights, but I’m not going to get into that now. The fireworks boomed through their finale, and we paid no attention.

The echoes of fading shots brought a sense of finality, our prize of each other obscured in the haze of blackpowder smoke like a blissful dream waking you by nightmare twist in its last seconds. People got to their feet, shook off their blankets, and like any post-event crowd, nebulously shuffled back to their boring routines without a definitive sense of purpose or direction, until the next fireworks show in the form of a rodeo, a concert, or a labor day festival complete with beer garden.

In the cliche, the silence was deafening, an inverse alarm clock awakening us to a new world that we now lived in. Love existed, but it was fleeing, and now I looked at Lauren, this girl that I had met and loved and her eyes were tearing up, head swiveling around, looking at the other people leaving. These “adults” surrounding us, her eyes coming back to me telling me that we were special. We weren’t gonna grow up to be these people. We were going to buck the world, normalcy surrounded us, and felt like a perverse abomination. But finally she said, “I have to go.”

“I know.”

“Take this. Find me someday, huh?”

She wiped tears from her eyes with the top of her wrist, and placed something small and metallic my hand. I cradled this impromptu aluminum sculpture in my hand, as for a split second, I marvelled at the artistry of taking everyday waste and turning it into an improvised symbol of love.

“I will find you, Lauren. I promise.”

“I love you, Nick”

“I love you too.”

She kissed me, walked away, and then she was gone. I looked around this new universe I had inherited with intimidated eyes. I felt scared, small, and alone. Without her in the picture, my fate destined me to journey back to a home where I was put upon. I couldn’t even play a hero in my own mind in the booby-trapped jungle of Junior High, and now I knew that I was again alone, but having known the highs of loving and loss? It felt unbearable, and I choked on stagnant air as if caged in the top half of an hourglass. My time already expired.

It never ceases to amaze me when I hear from folks who say they can’t find decent help online.

It never ceases to amaze me when I hear from folks who say they can’t find decent help online.

When I ask what they are offering in terms of compensation, invariably they will quote some ridiculously low price… a price that no one in North America could live on, not even as a part-time supplement. They go to places like Elance and Guru and other job sites and try to find someone who will work for less than $5 per hour and then lament that “Good help is hard to find.” Excuse me?

I recently put out some feelers on Elance for my own transcription business. I offered what I felt was a decent wage. I had to cut off the bidding at more than 60 candidates, yet I have a feeling that my request could have gone on for days. Why? Because I was offering a decent wage for a newbie. I was offering a good starting wage for someone wanting to break into the general transcription business AND I was attracting the best of the best. As a side note, each of those candidates will be reviewed and responded to by the end of this weekend.

Isn’t the best of the best what you would want for your business at the end of the day? Does scrimping and saving when it comes to subcontractors really make sense in the long run?

It’s the old ‘walk a mile in my shoes’ thing. Would YOU work for you for the rates you are offering? If so, I doubt you would feel very good about yourself or the services you were offering. Are those the types of people you want on your team?

Another irony as I posted my starting subcontractor rates is that I had very few offshore candidates offering to work for me for 50, 40 or 30 cents per hour. I wonder why. Could it be because I also posted my requirements in no uncertain terms and what I absolutely needed to have at a minimum before I could even look at a person as a candidate?

Could it be apparent that I was totally clear about what my business needed and that those unqualified need not apply? Yes, I think so.

I’m putting my feet up this weekend and sifting through the serious bidders, those with real qualifications… I am going to savor them, get to know each of their personalities, and explore more about them. Would I have received the same caliber of candidates if I had offered a ridiculously low price? Of course not!

Just something to think about.

Today, when I was giving a colleague an introduction to PR, it made me take a fresh look at what we always considered to be the basics of PR and they still hold true. Journalists still want good, reliable information in a timely manner. And what’s the first thing you say when you speak to them, whatever medium it is through? Have you got a minute or are you on deadline? And if they contact you, what’s one of the most important things, as well as knowing what they need? What’s your deadline? It’s amazing how many people either aren’t aware of it, or forget it. Even those who know a lot about marketing generally. As I said before, PR isn’t rocket science – it’s mainly common sense.

I’ve chosen the least miserable part of this soggy day to lace up my old pair of Adidas and take the dog for a walk. Before this I sat at the table, trying to wrap my head around what to do next. I’m constantly questioning whether my hustle is hustle enough.

Does this look like hustle to you?

7 am – Wake up, cook eggs, make smoothies, pack the kid’s lunch, get dressed, fumble with her hair when she doesn’t want it brushed again

8:45 am – Drop kid at school. Meet with school secretary about place to have a parents meeting. I’m the room mom.

9:30 am – Arrive downtown for weekly meeting with regular client. Set up shots and shoot video for their website.

11:00 am – Meet with owner of local cafe’ about having meeting in his shop.

11:15 am – Go to library to print off flyers for meeting.

12:00 pm – Do daily updates for clients’ social networking sites.

12:30 pm – Start wondering whether this is hustle.

So this is the thing I’ve discovered about freelancers, in my six months on the job. To succeed at being your own boss and writing in your sweatpants, you’ve got to constantly be on your own ass. Questioning. Reflecting when you finish a project – did you do your best, in the least amount of time possible?

You realize that no longer are you in someone else’s office, punching in and out and allowing for plenty of idle time in between. When you slack off, you don’t get paid. Period.

This is the first struggle of our kind.

The second comes a little later–at least it did for me. After you’ve done it a while and gotten sort of good at hustling under your own whip, you have to allow yourself time to slow down. Isn’t that a sign of a good boss — one who recognizes when you’ve been busting your hump, and suggests you take the afternoon off?

So you have to do this for yourself too. Allow yourself to say “this is the only time of day that the sun is going to come out in this dark Northwest town,” and give yourself 20 minutes away from the hustle.

Being my own boss is great, and comes quite naturally, surprisingly enough! But being a good one takes a little bit more attention and intention.

Ask the right question to add value for your client or employer. Instead of asking “What do you need

Ask the right question to add value for your client or employer. Instead of asking “What do you need me to do?” ask “What do you think of this concept for boosting business?” and then present ideas you can implement that will save time or money, grow their business, or streamline production.

This is an especially important difference if you are a freelancer, a part-time employee in a company facing cut-backs, or a virtual assistant. By offering solutions to problems, you are adding value for the company while creating work for yourself. You are demonstrating your ability to be a partner instead of a drone and an asset instead of a drain on the budget.

By asking the right question, you are also more likely to get a satisfying answer. The answer to “What do you need me to do?” could be “I don’t know.” or “Nothing.” or “Get out of my space.” When you present ideas that free people to do what they love best, you are more likely to get a positive response. You end up being in a position to grow their business and secure your place in that process. Even if your client or employer needs to think about your ideas before taking action, you have demonstrated your value as a forward-thinking, proactive, solution-provider.

Are you asking the right question?
