Well, we had a pretty good experience on IRC last night in that we got online and managed to get into the same channel. Towards the end of the connect session we were talking about making my test channel #dmac217 “permanent”; well I’ve registered it now so hopefully that will work for the time being. In the meantime, I will be working on creating a channel for Cerro Coso’s Digital Media and Computer Sciences departments, with the idea that we can be an ongoing help to one another both as students and alumni. It’s Justin’s idea and I think it’s a good one! (If you have no idea what I’m talking about, I suggest you watch last night’s recorded Adobe Connect session. )

I found a great resource of IRC/freenode ettiquette and expectations, so please read it before you spend very much time in the channels.

One thing I mentioned last night was a website where folks could share code back and forth. If you get into any PHP tweaking of modules, etc., you will want to use Pastebin in order to get help and coding advice. In fact, I think I will encourage my XHTML students to use it next semester when dealing with coding problems! It’s a great resource.

… Hace unos días atrás mientras conversaba con mi amigo Germán Caro (aka Katai) acerca del idioma japonés llegamos a la conclusión que teníamos una excelente herramienta a la mano, la cual estábamos desperdiciando, así que en esos momentos de inspiración tuvimos la feliz iniciativa de crear un canal de chat en Freenode (irc.freenode.net) orientado al estudio del idioma japonés. Cabe aclarar que en Freenode ya existe un canal de japonés llamado #nihongo pero en su gran mayoría está copado por angloparlantes; viendo esto optamos por crear un canal pensado en el hispanohablante deseoso de aprender el japonés y como no, también para el japonés interesado en aprender español, así que mediante este post te invito a ti lector interesado en aprender el idioma a unirte al canal y participar de la experiencia de estudio entre la gente verdaderamente interesada en aprender; de paso haces amigos y aprendes algo más que nihongo… el canal es #nihongo-es y el servidor irc.freenode.net, te esperamos.

A continuación algunos detalles para tener en cuenta al ingresar al canal:

Para poder unirte y participar de un canal de IRC necesitas antes que nada instalar un cliente IRC en tu computadora, dependiendo del sistema que uses puedes elegir entre una amplia gama de clientes IRC como mIRC, XChat, Chatzilla, Pidgin, Trillian o el navegador Opera y su cliente IRC incorporado. A continuación te enlistaré los principales clientes IRC y la manera como debes configurarlos para acceder a nuestro canal #nihongo-es en el servidor irc.freenode.net, luego de eso podrás ver algunos ejemplos de como nuestro bot en el canal nos ayuda con las traducciones online de japonés; espero que sea de tu agrado.

mIRC: Es el cliente IRC por excelencia en Windows (IRCap y similares son add-ons para este programa), puedes obtenerlo de su pagina web (www.mirc.com) y la manera como será configurado es la siguiente: En la ventana de status (estado) ingresas la orden /server irc.freenode.net Una vez conectado podrás unirte al canal Nihongo-es escribiendo /join #nihongo-es

Ambas órdenes son válidas para otros clientes IRC como Chatzilla y XChat

Xchat: Si utilizas este programa (www.xchat.org) al iniciarlo te saldrá una ventana con una larga lista de servidores, deberás buscar la red Freenode y darle a Editar, lo más cómodo es activar la opción para que se conecte automáticamente a esa red al arrancar el programa y en la ventana Channels to join poner #nihongo-es (con el símbolo #), así al iniciar el programa no sólo se conectará a la red freenode sino que además te llevará de inmediato al canal #nihongo-es. En Character Set deberas seleccionar la opción UTF-8 que es la codificación adecuada para poder ver los acentos y los caracteres japoneses sin problemas.

Si bien Xchat es un programa de uso libre la versión para Microsoft Windows sólo dura 30 días así que será recomendable que instales algún fork gratuito del Xchat, en esta página: http://www.silverex.info/features/ podrás conseguirla.

Chatzilla: Si usas Firefox, Mozilla o Seamonkey puedes usar un cliente IRC llamado Chatzilla (https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=16), una vez que lo tengas instalado tienes todo lo necesario para conectarte, sólo haces clik en irc://irc.freenode.net/nihongo-es o escríbelo manualmente en la barra del navegador y listo.

Para que el programa ingrese directamente a #nihongo-es presiona el botón derecho del mouse sobre la pestaña del canal y escoge la opción “Open this channel at startup”. Una vez realizado este pequeño paso cada vez que inicies el programa Chatzilla se conectará automáticamente a la red Freenode e ingresará al canal #nihongo-es sin necesidad de hacer otra cosa. Lo bueno de Chatzilla es que por defecto usa la codificación UTF-8 así que no tendrás problemas con caracteres extraños como los del alfabeto hiragana o katakana y los kanjis.

Pidgin: Utilizar Pidgin (www.pidgin.org) es un poco diferente ya que este cliente te permite usar varios sistemas de mensajeria a la vez (al igual que el Trillian) como IRC, MSN, Talk, ICQ y muchos otros más. El método de conexión a la red IRC con este cliente sería crear una cuenta con el protocolo IRC y el nombre del servidor irc.freenode.net (aparece por defecto).

Si usas la versión en español, en “Amigos” encontrarás “Añadir chat”… donde podrás escribir un nombre de usuario, una clave y el canal, que en nuestro caso es #nihongo-es… y ya puedes participar del canal; si usas la versión en inglés, en “Buddies” encontrarás “Add Chat…”, en “Channel” escribiras #nihongo-es en “Password” tu clave y en “Alias” tu usuario y listo.

Trillian: Trillian es parecido a Pidgin, ya que puede utilizar varios sistemas de mensajeria a la vez. Igualmente para conectarse a la red IRC hay que crear una cuenta con el protocolo IRC y el nombre del servidor irc.freenode.net. Después basta con conectarse al servidor y entrar al canal Nihongo-es escribiendo simplemente /join #nihongo-es

Opera: A partir de la versión 7.50 el navegador Opera (www.opera.org) incluye un cliente IRC. Para poder acceder al canal #nihongo-es tienes que ir a “Herramientas” –> “Cuentas de Correo y Chat. El programa te pedirá que crees una cuenta. Acepta y en la ventana “Elija la clase de cuenta que desea crear” selecciona Chat (IRC). Pulsa siguiente. En la ventana que aparece se te pide que escribas tu nombre real y una dirección de correo. Pulsa siguiente. Ahora se te pide que escribas un Alias. Puedes optar por tu nombre de usuario usual u otro cualquiera. Pulsa siguiente. En esta ventana, “Elegir red IRC o escribir el nombre de servidor” elige un servidor de freenode. Pulsa terminar. El programa cargará automáticamente las salas (canales) del servidor IRC. Ahora sólo tienes que buscar el canal #nihongo-es (utiliza para esto “!Buscar ya!”) y pulsar el botón “Unirse”.

Para seleccionar la codificación UTF-8 pulsa con el botón derecho del mouse sobre el servidor de freenode y elige “Propiedades”. Selecciona la pestaña “De salida” y en la casilla “Código predeterminado” escoge UTF-8.

Una vez dentro del canal #nihongo-es no olvides las normas mínimas de cortesía, saluda al ingresar y preséntate ante los demás, no insultes ni ofendas a nadie y no uses mayúsculas a menos que sea necesario para resaltar algo. Recuerda que debes tratar al resto como te gustaría ser tratado.

A continuación unos ejemplos de como funciona nuestra herramienta en línea de ayuda al idioma japonés, Pivot, el cual es un bot de IRC (un pequeño programa que responde a comandos sencillos para ejecutar ciertas tareas predeterminadas), programado con algunas funciones de ayuda y algunas otras que iras descubriendo con el uso del mismo.

Los comandos relativos al idioma japonés son: trans, supertraducir, traducir, romaji y edict; hay otros comandos aparte que pueden ayudar en las tareas de busqueda por internet como: definir y google. La manera de usar a pivot es sencilla, ingresas el comando anteponiendo la @ y el bot ejecutará la orden. Evidentemente para traducir algo del japonés será necesario escribir la palabra en sus caracteres japoneses correctos. Para esto será necesario tener instalado algún método de escritura en japonés como el IME de Microsoft en Windows y el UIM ó el SCIM en Linux.

@trans: Este comando nos permite hacer una traducción especifica de español al japonés y viceversa. Cabe aclarar que no siempre será una traducción acertada, para ese caso debemos definir con @edict y tener en cuenta el contexto de la oración.

I am no longer allowed to connect to freenode using mibbit, my favorite irc client because of “security reasons”.

This actually pisses me off. A LOT.

Freenode claims that mibbit is unsecure and that the lack of cummunication between the  mibbit team and  the freenode team about those issues have led to banning all mibbit users.

I use mibbit because it’s comfortable to connect from anywhere to my favorite channels on freenode (which is the only server I use most of the time).

I use mibbit just because I don’t really like any other IRC client and don’t want to download one.

They replaced mibbit with their own lame client. That sounds like politics to me.

It’s amazing that an open-sourced group that allegedly represents freedom does something that really opposes their nature.

Da qualche giorno abbiamo configurato i moduli log-irc delle due sonde, DolceFederica e RootMe. Ora e` possibile vedere i log, in realtime, semplicemente entrando nel canale #klaatuproject su FreeNode (calvino.freenode.net), con un client IRC. Io sto usando MacIrssi, mi trovo bene.

Occasionally, I need help with an especially tricky problem I encounter at work. Most open source software projects have IRC channels and these can be a good resource for answering difficult questions.

It seems as though whenever I drop in and ask a question, I’m almost always ignored, while the helpful people there answer other people’s questions. I generally don’t even get an acknowledgment that I exist at all. I follow proper etiquette and am not pushy or scrolly or otherwise annoying, and I ask my question clearly.

I can think of two possible reasons:

By the time I get to asking people questions, I’ve exhausted my own abilities, RTFMing, Googling, and pretty much everything else I can possibly try. I don’t like to take up people’s time with problems I can solve myself, and I’ve got enough experience that I don’t need help with the easier stuff. So maybe my questions are a little tougher than average, and maybe the people who happen to be paying attention in channel just don’t know the answer.

Or, everyone hates me and thinks I’m a dick.

Who knows, but it’s really annoying.

In den vergangenen Jahren sind eine ganze Reihe von neuen Internetforen zum Textsatz mit LaTeX entstanden, die einen näheren Blick wert sind. Das Web 2.0 entwickelt sich trotz Tendenzen zur Konsolidierung weiterhin recht lebhaft, und der Trend geht zumindest für jüngere und technisch weniger versierte Anwender ganz klar hin zum Webforum.

Die älteren Foren in Newsgroups und Mailinglisten bestehen daneben natürlich fort, und zumindest die TeX-Newsgroups de.comp.text.tex, comp.text.tex und fr.comp.text.tex sind vom Nutzerschwund im Usenet weniger stark betroffen als andere Gruppen (während die spanische Gruppe es.comp.lenguajes.tex leider seit längerem schon chronisch zugespammt wird). Die hier schreibenden Regulars engagieren sich meist schon länger in den TeX-Anwendervereinigungen und verfügen daher über ein dementsprechend gutes Know-How. Daneben boomt aber zunehmend das Webforum. Das LaTeX-Forum von mrunix.de gibt es schon länger, goLaTeX ging etwas später an den Start. Außerdem gibt es noch ein LaTeX-Forum bei Matroids Matheplanet und auch eine Plattform für KOMA-Script-Anwender. Hier tauscht man sich auf Deutsch aus. LaTeX Community scheint das einzige öffentliche Webforum in englischer Sprache zu sein. Selbstverständlich kann man diese Dienste auch per RSS-Feed im Feedreader mitlesen. Über Google Groups funktioniert das auch bei Newsgroups, für das Posten über Google sollte man aber einige Hinweise. beachten. Die Verwendung von Google Groups ist mittlerweile so populär geworden, daß manche (eher jüngere) Anwender gar meinen, das ganze Usenet wäre eine Veranstaltung von Google, was in dieser Form natürlich abwegig ist.

Daneben entdeckt man noch ein paar weniger öffentliche Foren zu LaTeX in den sogenannten sozialen Netzwerken, so etwa die (La)TeX-Gruppen bei XING oder bei Facebook. Während nicht registrierte Anwender bei XING immerhin noch mitlesen können (die Suchfunktion steht allerdings erst nach der Anmeldung zur Verfügung), handelt es sich bei der LaTeX-Gruppe auf Facebook um eine gänzlich geschlossene Veranstaltung, deshalb ist es nicht sinnvoll, auf sie zu verlinken. Wer nicht bei Facebook registriert ist, muß leider draußen bleiben. Vielleicht liegt es hieran, daß sich auf der (mit der Gruppe nicht zu verwechselnden) DANTE-Seite dort bisher weniger als eine Handvoll „Fans“ zusammengefunden haben, während sich bei XING derzeit rund 750 Nutzer als TeX-Anwender geoutet haben. Die Beteiligung ist in diesen Foren deutlich geringer als bei den offen zugänglichen Portalen. Andererseits ist auffällig, daß Themen mitunter Monate später wieder aufgegriffen werden oder daß manche Threads über Jahre laufen, was in Newsgroups oder auf Mailinglisten ausgeschlossen ist, weil deren Inhalte bekanntlich „flüchtig“ sind. Echte Hilfestellung oder wirklich Neues ist mir dort aber noch nicht begegnet.

Der Facebook-Gruppe „\TeX, \LaTeX, and such \ldots“ gehören derzeit fast 5000 Mitglieder aus der ganzen vernetzten Welt an, während „goLaTeX“ knapp über 200 und die „LaTeX Community“ rund 3000 registrierte User nennen. Angaben für „mrunix.de“ erscheinen nicht sinnvoll, weil das Forum nicht nur LaTeX-Anwender vereint, sondern auch andere Themen bedient. Und auch in den englischen und deutschen LaTeX-Kanälen auf dem IRC-Server-Netzwerk Freenode trifft man zusammengenommen meist eine knapp dreistellige Zahl von Benutzern an.

Auffällig ist, daß all diese Communities weitgehend berührungslos und austauscharm nebeneinander existieren. Einerseits bleibt die Web-1.0-Welt der (eher älteren) Regulars in Newsgroups und Mailinglisten doch weitgehend unter sich – aus gut nachvollziehbaren Gründen, die auch ich übrigens teile. Andererseits gilt das auch in umgekehrter Richtung. Immerhin ergibt die Addition der Teilnehmer auch angesichts eines angemessenen Abschlags für Mehrfachregistrierungen und „schlafende“ Accounts eine doch recht beachtliche Zahl an aktiven LaTeX-Interessierten, zumal die Zahl der still Mitlesenden nicht bekannt ist (sozusagen eine Art von „Dunkelziffer“).

Natürlich wird auch über LaTeX getwittert. Eine Twitter-Suche kann interessant sein, weil hier manchmal Neuigkeiten zu finden sind, die man früher so schnell nur auf Mailinglisten erfuhr, nicht nur zu diesem Blog – übrigens inhaltsgleich mit einer Gruppe auf Identi.ca. Im Unterschied zu dem proprietären Twitter-Dienst, stehen alle Inhalte, die über Indenti.ca verbreitet werden, unter einer Creative-Commons-Lizenz (Creative Commons Attribution 3.0), und auch sonst ist Identi.ca gegenüber Twitter als der modernere und freiere Dienst unterstützenswert (mehr dazu im FLOSS Weekly Podcast, in dem Randal Schwartz und Leo Laporte den OpenMicroBlogging-Standard vorstellen).

Ayer a las 7 horas GMT, empezó el coloquio organizado por PuntoLibre.org, el canal #supremos (de IRC) y TecnoLibres, el cual se realizo en el canal #supremos. Empezamos con una charla introductoria, para luego ir a un par de charlas sobre software libre. Continuamos luego con una charla para que tener en cuenta, a la hora de elegir una distribución de GNU/Linux, para finalizar con un grupo de charlas sobre distintas distribuciones (Ubuntu, gNewsense, Fedora y Gentoo), luego se paso a una amigable conversación entre los oyentes. Este año se duplicaron la cantidad de visitas respecto a la vez pasada, llegando a haber 45 personas escuchando. La gente escucho atenta las más de 5 horas de charla, participando con entusiasmo preguntándole o comentando lo que los charlistas iban explicando.

Something really interesting happened on one my workstations which had this weechat IRC client running on it.

Weechat is this irssi-based IRC client for use on a Linux console. The features page lists certain interesting ones and while I first chose it over irssi, the compelling reason was proper proxy support (authenticated ones). I had little idea on how the “FIFO pipe for remote control” would be helpful- until this happened this morning:

I’m usually connected to the Freenode and Rizon networks. Rizon is primarily the japanese-animation/drama hub for various fansubbing groups. Mostly used for co-ordinating among fansubbers and providing XDCC leech bots. So, here I was, leeching an episode off of a particular bot, and not realising that the download had completed, I moved (mv) the file from the default download location (~/.weechat/dcc) to the approriate directory (~/Backups/Videos/Film). This I did, on another console within screen, I switched back (C-a C-a) to the console where weechat was running and was surprised to see that the file I thought had completely downloaded still going down around 98%. Shocked, I `ls -l ~/Backups/Videos/Film` and get even more shocked to see that the file-size of this moved file had grown a bit. What was happening here? When my disk is out of space and a download breaks due to that, I’d see a “broken pipe” message in the log window, so what happened here, I think, is what they mean by “FIFO pipe for remote control”. Even after I had moved an incomplete, currently downloading file to a new location, the download continued without any usually expected re-actions one would see with software on Windows or software such as LinuxDC++ (locked files).

That was an interesting experience and an interesting feature I’d love to see in more software. Good job, weechat. Copy-pasting off a weechat window is sort of stupid, though, owing to the nicklist on the right and fancier formatting. Overall, it’s been good.

Few moments ago I tried logging in from mibbit to Freenode. I was presented with a neat little message “Nick already in use”!

As most of my online chaps on freenode know my nick is `krish`, I logged in with `realkrish` and politely pm’ed the current user of `krish` to change his nick.  Here’s the conversation….

El sábado 1 de Noviembre se realizará otro Chilean Bug Jam. El sentido de todo esto es buscar, investigar y asesinar bugs que se encuentren afectando nuestro sistema operativo Ubuntu. La idea es que como comunidad participemos de esto ya que es responsabilidad de todos mantener “limpio” el sistema.

Nos juntaremos a las 11:00 am en el canal #ubuntu-cl de la red irc.freenode.org. Si tienes dudas acerca del procedimiento de búsqueda y muerte de bugs, no te preocupes, ya que nos ayudamos entre todos y  así vamos resolviendo las dudas que van apareciendo en el camino.
