Last Sunday, on the 22nd of November, Team AttitudeBikes were present at the Yew Tee Flatout Challenge. We were there in full force (almost), not only to participate, but also to provide technical support for the event.

The Yew Tee Flatout challenge really set a new benchmark for the Freeride/Downhill scene in Singapore. It has been a while since we had a Downhill competition with such a large turnout of riders, and the course was great fun even with the lack of space and elevation. This is all thanks to Uncle Jeff and his brilliant team! There are plans in the way to have a full series of such events next year and we are definitely looking forward to it!

Ja ich bin neulich das neue Malolo von Burton gefahren, Länge 158cm.  Dank der neuen Rocker Konstruktion fährt das Ding noch besser, leichte Schwungeinleitung und perfekte Schwungauslösung sind garantiert.

Erstmal dachte ich dass das Board etwas unruhig wird, aber nix davon zu spüren. Auch switch kein Problem.

Ich bin die letzten Jahre mit dem 2007 Malolo gefahren und das neue Malolo mit dem ICS System fährt eindeutig besser.

Gefahren bin ich das Board mit der neuen Burton Co2 Bindung, sie ist der Hammer beste Kraftübertragung, super Dämpfung und leicht ist sie !

The Yew Tee Flatout Challenge 2009 is a cycling event to promote Freeride Mountain Biking in Singapore. The challenge consists of a timed run down a Downhill/Freeride type of course. This event takes place this Sunday, the 22nd of November and it is organised by none other than Uncle Jeff, the man who takes care of the Gangsa trails! Kudos to him and his team! Do come down to show your support as this event will be the first of its kind in Singapore. Team AttitudeBikes will definitely be there to support the event so we’ll see you there!

No i sie zaczelo- pierwsze kreski w tym sezonie mam za soba. Wypad w gory byl conajmniej mega udany, wypoczalem, nameczylem sie ale po koleii

Zaczelo sie wszystko w czwartkowy poranek kiedy to prowadzac samochod i sluchajac wspanialej stacji jaka jest RMF, do mych uszu dotarla wiesc, ze w gorach spadlo sporo sniegu (ohh dziekuje wiadomosciom na RMFie ). Szybki rekonesans w necie (dziekuje firmie Apple za Iphone’a) i rzeczywiscie- na kspr lezy 77 cm sniegu, temperatura -5,4, na kamerce piekny bialy widok- zatem bajka! Na takie cos czekalem (no moze grubosc pokrywy nie poraza ale, ze to listopad to i tak podjara w opor). Szybkie telefony do kumpla i esy do innych- jedziemy w piatek wieczorem na KSPR! W skladzie dwuoosobowym jedziemy, bo to jedna kosc zbila ogonowa, reszta kasy brak albo i checi- NVM ;]

W piatek z rana zdazylem sie ogarnac, najesc sie, obejrzec od groma filmow FReeridowych, zgrac nuty na playliste nowe, spakowac pierdoly i w droge. Po drodze odiwedzilem z tymze jeszcze Lui i wyzarlem jej troche czekolady i jakiegos tam sera

W kazdym badz razie o 16 bylem na dworcu w Bialym, a widok czlowieka z nartami na plecaku o tej porze roku byl dla ludzi do okola conajmniej dziwny (nie wiem czemu )… Potem 2,5 godziny zamuly w PKPie, sluchajac nut i witamy w stolicy :] Gonie do Tarasow gdzie zbieram Oskara, oraz pierodle w quiku nabywam i mozemy jechac dalej. Btw. to w tym quiku calkiem fajna jest jedna sprzedawczyni- pytala sie gdzie na weekend na narty gonie. Jak odpowiedzialem, ze na KSPR to dosyc zdziwiona byla- widac juz wszyscy mysla ze w listopadzie to na narty only zagranica da sie pojezdzic

Gonimy z Oskarem do Bartka, pozyczamy kamerke HD, oraz urzadamy sobie poczekalnie na autobus. Jakie pierdoly na youtubie leca w tle, muzyka gra ogolnie klimat bardziej impreza sie robi niz narty ale w koncu mamy piatek wieczorem. O 22 jednakze opusczamy ochotowska przystan i zapierdalamy jak kolibery na Zachodni.

One takze sniegiem przykryte…

Na szczycie dopadla nas taka buzacja, ze zapomnielismy o fakcie iz nie jedlismy nic jeszcze Za to od razu ruszylsimy na jazde. Jako pierwszy zjazd w tym roku wybralismy kociol gasienicowy, ktory jako ze jeszcze trasa nie czynna to wyratrakowany nie byl i stanowil ciekawa opcje na rozgrzeweczke :]

Ogolnie pierwszy zjazd mialem mowiac krotko- chujowy. Jakos nie moglem ogarnac sie do polowy z nartami- normalnie byl moment ze zwatpilem i zapytalem sie siebie- “kurwa co ja tu robie ja pierdole Konrad ogarnij sie!!!”. Ale od polowy do konca juz bylo lepiej :]

W zjezdzie tym jednak wyczulem jedno- 85 pod butem to za malooo…

Nastepnie ogarnelismy podejscie:

I sie udalismy na Beskid. Sentyment mam do ow szczytu albowiem to byla pierwsza gorka na ktorej zapodalem freeride w Tatrach Po drodze na Beskid wcielismy jeszcze “Lembasy”- nalesniki suche Oskrowej produkcji- bardzo grube i sycace, a takze bulki z serem zoltym i salami A to wszystko podziwiajac gorskie pejzaze. W tym miejscu podziekowania skladam pogodzie ktora znow okazal sie dla mnie laskawa- znow na KSPR mialem pelna lampe, piekna przejrzystosc powietrza itd )

Na Beskidzie juz ogarnalem sie na tyle z jazda, ze zaraz po starcie pocisnalem fajna linie do samego dolu :] I bylo bardzo fajnie- narty w puszku plynely, ja zrobilem ze 2-3 skrety, predkosc zmierzona organoleptycznie tez byla calkiem fajna wiec ogolnie pozytyw 100%

A potem Goryczkowa ktora takze ujezdzona nie byla. Na tym zjezdzie juz czulem sie rozejdzony na tyle, ze postanowilem myslec o tym aby “jakos to wygladalo”. Niestety dupa- nie pdoboa mi sie moja sylwetka- w kwietniu bylo lepiej. Pewnie kolejnym razem juz bedzie spoko- w koncu to moj pierwszy raz od kwietnia na nartach…

A potem zaczela sie rzez. W sumie wczesniej juz, podchodzenie z nartami na plecach przy wietrze nie jest moja ulubiona czynnoscia (nart na plecaku za zagiel robia, a ja dosyc lekki jestem), ale to co bylo przed nami mialo mnie dopiero zmkeczyc. Otoz w dolinie bylo tyle sniegu, ze moje narty nie wyrabialy i zapadalem sie… Musialem odchylac sie do tylu co powodowalo palacy bol golenii ale jeszcze gorsze byly pozniej koleiny po innych free zapalencach ktorzy smigali tedy tego dnia… Pojechalismy wiec bardziej lasem, co chwila zapadajac sie w sniegu ale bylo conajmnije przygodowo

Na koniec lasu mialem predkosc calkiem dobra aby poleciec takiego malego dropsa. Najaz, lot i bum- trafilem nartami w skale pod sniegiem. Dwie dziury w slizgu i wygieta krawedz jednej narty to efekt tego co sie stalo…

Na koniec po zjezdzie do Kuznic padlismy ze zmeczenia… Lezelismy chwile na sniegu i pierdolilismy rozne glupoty… Potem w droge do Zako, przebieramy sie znow na dworcu i na zarcie do MC Wcialem jakies zestawiki pogrzalismy dupy i o 21:30 na bus. Takowy nadjechal, zaladowalismy sie i znow w kime… O 12 w niedziele bylem juz w mym akademickim miescie…

Ogolnie: zajebiscie odpoczalem od calego zgielku codziennego zycia, zapomnialem o wszystkim, rozjezdzilem sie w mieciutkim sniezku, oraz przezylem cudowny czas wysoko w gorach wdychajac czysciutkie powietrze- czego chciec wiecej?

sarah just asked me about it today, and oddly enough, i had just checked the website yesterday.  2010 registration isn’t available yet, but they do have the 2009 pix up (but nothing to write home about).

there’s a 14 mile mountain bike ride in the wolfman.

it’s nothing like this video, but i’d like to envision myself on one of these bikes.

Tammy Donahugh is a US freeride/dirtjumper who has been busting out big tricks for years, and we featured a video of her riding back when Martha Hucker first started, called Girls Rock (see it here). She’s just put together a sequel, and we caught up with her to talk about her riding.

Hey Tammy! How long have you been riding, and how did you get into it?
I’m pretty sure I’ve been riding long enough that I could be eligible to receive a lifetime achievement award ! Back when I was a rebel teenager my boyfriend and his buddies started getting into mountain biking and mtb racing, so I wanted to tag along. I got addicted to everything about it, and before I knew it riding bikes was a major part of my life.

Who do you ride with normally, and where do you ride? Any other girls that shred in your area?
I ride with my talented hubby mostly. It’s hard to find girls that want to ride dirt jumps and skate parks, so it ends up just being myself & my music a lot of the time. There are a ton of talented riders in the area, so unless there’s a competition going on, there’s generally a rider or 10 at any given DJ spot. We did have a strong girl posse for a short while here in CO, but a few of them moved out to California for the year round warmth. The OG crew is Lisa Myklak, Emily Johnston, Nadia Steinbrecher, and myself. Hopefully we can all meet up for a much needed reunion soon!

What motivates you the most to go out and push your riding to the next level?
Anytime I get to ride with my friends and see them learning and pushing their limits gets me pumped to try new things. Progression is always happening out there and it continually amazes me how deep the sea of learning is. I don’t want to end up an old maid either, so that’s some motivation!!

How do you psych yourself up to try new tricks?
I think I need to work on my psyching up methods. Being in my thirties with a career & a mortgage has possibly created some type of wussie cell in my brain.
Although any time someone in the crew nails a new trick I instantly want to try it! Once you get a few that you can throw comfortably it’s like an addiction and you want to get more tricks in your bag. I definitely had a dry spell recently where I was not learning any new specific tricks, but there is SO much more to jumping and riding than throwing a trick.

What’s your worst injury, and what do you when you can’t ride?
Last year I had a pretty bad experience by breaking both my elbows at the same time. One was pretty smashed up as well as the ligaments torn off and needed some hardware to fix it. Obviously not being able to use both of your arms for some time is somewhat traumatic, but an injury I experienced early in my racing days I would count as my worst. I crashed on a DH Nationals course and ended up putting a hole in my face with a rock. It tore off my left nostril and you could see my teeth through my cheek (imagine a pumpkin being impaled). When you cut through the nerves in your face, that area does not work for quite some time. For about 3 months it looked like I had suffered a stroke because one side of my face would not function. I don’t think it could have been fixed & healed much better than it did, but changing the look of your face definitely leaves more of a mental scar.
Somehow I’ve managed to only injure my upper extremities to date, so during my time off the bike I can usually hike, run, spin, etc., to keep me from turning into a professional slack-a-sauras!

What’s your favorite event of the year, and why?
Aside from the annual Jump Jam we host in our backyard (the raddest most awesome event ehverr! Aka the J’ammy Jam) I wouldn’t say I’ve got one favorite specific event, but definitely a type of event. The slopestyle events that offer pro & amateur classes/courses with a fun festival atmosphere are the ones I will rally to get to. It’s great when they’ve got more than just the main attraction going on too. For example – best trick comps, dual slalom races, clinics, ramps to session, etc. Out of all the events I did in 2009 I would vote the Ranch Jam “most fun”!

Tell us your raddest riding story…
It seems like I could tell a rad story for almost every road trip, race, jump jam, or fun day of DH riding with friends, but I think the raddest story is how riding a bike has made me into the person I am today. I know it sounds cheesy, but bikes have taken me to so many parts of the world I would have never seen, which in turn has created so many experiences. Experiences are what life is all about in my opinion. On top of that, I am pretty sure that I would have never turned into the confident, strong minded person that I’ve become which helps me get through day by day.

Two things. First, I’ve been alluding to Billy’s new sponsor for a while but haven’t yet said who it is: Diamondback. DB is building up a new mountain bike team after being without one for years and brought Billy on board to rep their bikes hard. So he said adios to Tonic Fabrication, whose hardtails he’d been shredding on, and hello to the fleet of steeds Diamondback is putting under him. That begins with the hardtail Assault, a beautiful 26 inch jump bike; and the Scapegoat, a burly full-suspension freeride bike–both with Fox forks. Billy’s super stoked to say the least. Diamondback’s pumped, and you can keep up with the news on their blog and see a quick Q&A Billy did for it here.

Second, finally made it out to Duthie! Tis the rainy season now and Billy and I got caught in it on both of our visits to the region’s newest mountain bike playground, but as Washington never fails to surprise, we got these shots of Billy on his new DB Scapegoat during a short sun break.

Duthie is located on the Issaquah Plateau and is fully funded by King County grant money and community donations. It’s a testament to the hard work of the local mtb crews who have spent many volunteer hours digging and building some decently big stuff for the sake of their own desires and those of the larger mountain bike community. As of now, there are a couple of pretty big flowy technical jump lines, some super fun bermy runs and a beginners’ section with little tabletops and jumps. For xc riders there’s a handful of trails that are all supposed to connect to one another in a clover desgin.

For now Duthie is on the small side as far as offerings, but the park is still being built. Plus, it’s a in beautiful section of the woods and though my pictures don’t do justice to the scenery, trust me, that swath of forest is designed for shooting and filming in.
