Free Carla Bruni CDs anger French taxpayers

A French government initiative to give away thousands of Carla Bruni CDs for free to promote exports has sparked an outrage in France amid plummeting popularity of President Nicolas Sarkozy, whom she married after a lightning romance last year.

The album will be dispatched to admirers of the former Italian supermodel-turned pop singer with wine and cheese vouchers.

French taxpayers are outraged that up to 1 million pounds of their money has been transferred to marketing agency Sopexa to plug the Italian-born singer’s songs.

Many believe France has still not digested the initial “bling bling” phase, symbolised by Sarkozy’s whirlwind romance with the Italian heiress.
At least 14,000 people in 19 countries have applied to receive one of the gift packs through the Ministry of Agriculture initiative.

Those set to get the free Bruni CDs have been asked to organise “Gallic evening” to showcase France’s best exports and then put their promotion on internet sites.

The former supermodel’s third album was released soon after her marriage to Sarkozy last year but sold less than 90,000 copies in France.

Bruni shrugged off the vitriolic reviews of her last album, saying: “It’s understandable that people can’t help mixing up my work as an artist and my official role.“

As Sarkozy completes two-year in office, sixty-three per cent have written off his first 24 months as a failure, according to a poll today for Metro newspaper, with only 28 per cent holding a positive opinion.

A mysterious character came into Karen Millen the other day and told me that I reminded him of this lady of the 1960’s.

I’d never heard of her before – but after watching her videos on youtube, I’ve become a bit of a fan! What a beautiful singer. In a weird coincedence, the name Francoise Hardy has just appeared in the book I’m currently reading (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly). So, thank you mysterious browser: what a compliment!

Alizée Jacotey (born August 21, 1984) is a French singer. Born in Ajaccio, Corsica, she goes by the stage name Alizée—the feminine form of alizé, the trade wind. She was discovered by Mylène Farmer, following her winning performance in the talent show, Graines de Star, in 1999. While collaborating with Mylène Farmer and Laurent Boutonnat, Alizée released two albums—both of which were hits inside and outside of France.

Alizée entered the music business in 2000. She has since released three studio albums – first two of which were composed by Laurent Boutonnat and written by Mylène Farmer. I first heard about Soha last fall at an Ayo concert. I love her sound and the fact that she sings in at least three languages continues to amaze me. There is an original biography written in French on her official website http://www.soha.fr and her myspace page http://www.myspace.com/sohamusic. I found an English translation of the biography on french-music.org. This is the intro:

SOHA : the nomad from here and elsewhere.
The desert winds course through her veins and her voice is delicately suffused with the traditional Algerian songs of her mother. It is to her mother, a native of Nubia, that she owes her love of music. Her parents are Sahrawi from the Western Sahara and members of the Ouled Soltane tribe (children of the Sultan). This background bequeathed Soha her nomadic spirit, craving for freedom and independence, and fiery temperament.
Unaffected, fresh and spontaneous, Soha embodies a mixture of cultural and ethnic roots.

Her meeting with Celia Cruz in Cuba greatly influenced her CD D’ici et d’ailleurs.

“Her Cuban influences reminded me so much of Marseilles. Those are rhythms I know. They’ve always been inside me because they are mostly African in origin. Celia opened my ears to them.”
Soha took time out to immerse herself in afro-Cuban recordings from 1930 to 1950. She found within them a source of new energy, the trigger for a new project: her own.

So Young But So Cold

This well-constructed compilation, is significant not only for opening up these sounds to a larger audience but also for putting a definite perspective on a music scene that was all too short.

It is the late Seventies in Europe. The political tensions of the Sixties are now manifest in the extremes of hedonism and direct action. Youth feels alienated once again, this time its worse with constant violence on the television and industrial upheavals at home.

Urban decimation and Postmodernism at its height, further isolating people from their surroundings. European identity has been eradicated in shame and frustration. But something is happening. Punk Rock in the United Kingdom has shown kids all over the world that its easy for them to release music on independent labels. Current technological trends make access to new electronic instruments (ARP and MS10 among others) easy. In France a new youth culture is born. So Young But So Cold illustrates that trend brilliantly.

It begins with the most poppy tunes and gradually goes back in time, as more instruments are added to each song and the experts (mostly influenced by and creating progressive rock) take over. The first half of the disc the instrumentation is sparse, consisting of drum machine or keyboard and vocals primarily. By the end of the disc the tracks get more (analog) synthesizer oriented and denser in construction.

J’adore cette chanson

J’ai trouvé cette chanson sans information (chanteur ou titre). Je comprends à peine un peu de français, puis je ne pourrais pas comprendre les lyriques. J’ai compris un peu et je décidé rechercher à google, et voilá, la chanson était Gabriel par Najoua B. J’adore sa musique. Elle est magnifique (désolé pour mon français horrible).

Pues ahora les cuento en español que dije. Pues resulta que he tenido esta canción como desde hace un año más o menos,  sin nada de información (cantante o título). Y pues mi francés no es muy bueno y no muy que entendía que decía la canción para buscarla. Justo anoche decidí a ponerle atención a la letra para “ver que cachaba” y pues le entendí lo suficiente que la pude buscar y he aquí, la cantante es Naojoua Belyzel y la canción se llama “Gabriel”.  Me encanta la música de ella. Pienso que es estupenda. También me disculpé por mi francés todo macheteado en esa nota

Edith Piaf, simplesmente essencial. Assisti ao seu filme na noite do Oscar, a atriz francesa Marion Cottilard super mereceu. Me lembrou muito da vida de Billie Holiday, são da mesma época, tiveram vidas duríssimas, passaram parte da infância em puteiros e ambas as vozes são fodas e cheias de intensidade.

ps: A música “Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien” faz parte também da trilha de Sonhadores.
