Si el blog tuviera línea editorial creo que David Guetta no entraría en ella seguro y Madonna a veces; sí cuando colabora con Massive Attack o Mirwais y no sé, cuando lo hace con Lil Wayne. El tema es que con la mezcla que le ha hecho el francés para el segundo single del álbum recopilatorio de Madonna, los dos tienen espacio aquí porqué la mezcla no está nada mal, y se sale un poco de las producciones tan cargadas que normalmente hace Guetta, y que tan poco me gustan. Ese vocoder!!!

Pedazo mix que le ha hecho el señor Guetta a Madonna. Dicho esto, DatA ha sacado un Ep llamado “Electric Fever”, que no es más que uno de los temas que ya incluyó en ese discazo que es el “Skywriter” a principios de este año, pero en versión vinilo de 7 pulgadas y con tres mezclas extras. Aunque no es uno de sus mejores temas, si que hay algún mix bastante bueno; para mi la de Acid Washed, las otras son de Munk y Idiotproof respectivamente. Aunque este lanzamiento previsto para el siete de diciembre es la noticia, el motivo del post es para comentar que DatA estará en la sala Lolita del Razzmatazz el día de mi aniversario, o sea que ya tengo plan.

DatA – Electric Fever Ep Minimix

In 2004 Needy Girl came out. The funky sound was completly new to me but yet so… so awesomely great. After that Chromeo has always had a special place in my heart.

The group (David Macklovitch and Patrick Gemayel) comes from Montreal, Canada and was formed 2002. Influnced by eighties disco and sententies funk they released the album She’s In Control in 2004. After great reviews and even videos on MTV it took them three years to create their next masterpiece, Fancy Footwork. This album was remixed by big names such as Etienne de Crezy, Laidback Luke and MSTRKRFT. Not to mention the king Philippe Zdar, the man behind the french artist Cassius, who made a great job mixing the album.

So now, 2009, Chromeo releases Night By Night with remixes by Skream and Siriusmo. Funny thing is that the original mix will work great on a dancefloor, Siriusmo remix you can drink a few beers to and Skream’s is a real laid back track for, say, relaxation…

Visiblement, le « revival » n’est pas l’apanage de l’audiovisuel (voir l’article « Quand l’audiovisuel et le spectacle jouent au Phoenix »). Un nouveau phoenix arrive dans le secteur de l’automobile : la griffe Gordini de RENAULT.

Petit rappel : la griffe Gordini, se sont des versions sportives de certains modèles Renault. Ce type de voiture vit le jour en 1957 et s’associa à des modèles tels que la R8. Ses caractéristiques visuelles ? Couleur bleue et 2 bandes blanches sur la carrosserie (ça ne vous rappelle rien ? ;) ). La clio RS et la Twingo RS auront donc l’honneur de revêtir cette combinaison de course (sans modification de la motorisation) pour le plus grand plaisir des nostalgiques de la grande époque.

Quel intérêt me direz vous ?

Multiples en fait :

- Tout d’abord faire du relookage, cela coûtera toujours moins cher que d’inventer de nouveaux modèles. En effet, cela permet de donner une identité forte à un produit de base. C’est justement la tendance du moment qui est à l’achat de plus petits véhicules qui ont une personnalité forte (exemple : mini) ;

- La « french touch » à l’ancienne est à la mode. Par exemple, Citroën a aussi fait du neuf avec du vieux avec la griffe « DS ». ;

- L’intérêt principal est de concurrencer les modèles tels que la Mini qui sont fortement bien positionnés sur le marché des citadines et des petites voitures grâce à leur personnalité forte et leur côté rétro.

Este chico de París, está encantado de conocerse, y si no pasad por su myspace y estad atentos a la descripción del artista (dice que ha actualizado el french touch, ja!), y de las fotos que hay colgadas; además, Allure viene a significar algo como “desprender fascinación” y entre sus temas están títulos como “Champagne”, “Dandy” o “Diamonds”. Olé por él. A parte de eso hacía tiempo que tenía ganas de dedicarle algún post ya que también es cierto que esas sobradas, marcan una personalidad marcada y estilo diferente (bueno, eso no tanto) dentro de la música electrónica francesa. El chaval aún no tiene nada editado, sólo un mix para Sebastian Tellier, pero yo creo que en nada, tendrá Ep; apunta maneras al menos….

Allure – Nocturne

En Neonized me encuentro con los parisinos Benjamin Boguet y Julien Brifazz, con un proyecto paralelo a Cosmo Vitelli, y con el que es un rollo buscar información, porqué se llena de páginas de cirugía. Se llaman Bot’Ox, y han hecho un tema elegantísimo para su próximo Ep homónimo al tema “Blue Stee”l, que sale a la venta el nueve de este mes. El vídeo tiene sentido sabiendo que todo el artwork que hay detrás del proyecto, está relacionado con el automóvil….

Solid Bump Records: How old are you?

Laberge: I am currently aged 22.

SBR: How did we meet?

Lbrg: It was a lonely sunday, I posted on “casual encounters on Craigslist” you replied… actually I think I added you on myspace and you sent me a message about my track.

SBR: Describe your sound. What sets it apart?

Lbrg: I like to think of my sound as warm and mellow. I like to remind people where the sound comes from, vinyl.

SBR: How does the current “Disco House” revival distinguish itself from the style of a decade ago?

Lbrg: More compression and not many people getting their music properly mastered. There are lots of dudes doing great things though – Hugo van Dyck, Get Famous, Le Pimp, Skingz and Snolan.

SBR: Vancouver has a lot of up and coming artist that seem to be similar in musical vision to you with people like U-Tern and the White Light Mix series. Is Vancouver developing a sound?

Lbrg: I don’t think Vancouver has ever had a true “sound”. If you look at the pool of talent in a city like Toronto, Vancouver never has really had much of an influence on music itself. Though there is plenty of talent in Vancouver, I have to think our best artists export themselves.

SBR: What is the process of a Laberge track? Where does it start? When is it done?

Lbrg: There isn’t so much a process as a “happening”, things usually come together over time rather then in a processed form. The idea for the EP was to create a warm, consistent sound throughout all 3 tracks.This was the project from the very start.

SBR: What attracted you to Solid Bump Records?

Lbrg: The fact that your previous releases were awesome. I bought that Chat Noir tune the day I read about it, before I had even contacted you guys.

SBR: On a certain internet music forum you have been known to post Lulz cat pictures. Give us the death blow of all Lulz cat pics.

SBR: Favorite canadian snack treat?

Lbrg: While it’s not a snack or treat, the single greatest piece of food on the earth is a Croque Madame. Make one today. Its basically a sandwich with special cheese sauce, mustard, black forest ham. you top it with more cheese sauce, and put an egg on top of it. The french are gluttons.

SBR: Give us a link to a song that you consider “one of the greatest”.

Lbrg: Absolutely one of the best funk tracks ever. Few people can come close.

They may hail from Versailles but a love of American popular culture has propelled Phoenix to the brink of a very unfrench transatlantic breakthrough, writes Andrew Purcell

Growing up in Versailles, an affluent suburb of Paris, the four boys who would eventually form Phoenix bonded over their love of American pop culture. They adored the movie Risky Business They heard Kenny Rogers on the radio and thought he was cool. They had no interest in French music at all, and instead swapped cassettes of Prince, Lou Reed, Hank Williams and My Bloody Valentine. They paused videotapes of live performances to learn the chords and resolved to write songs in English. Rock stardom would be their ticket out of a cultural backwater that was last fashionable when Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette still lived in the chateau.

“The best thing Versailles gave us is that it made us feel different,” says singer Thomas Mars. “Right from the beginning we knew that we didn’t want to please everybody because we couldn’t relate to anybody.” “We saw all the American shows, the foreign music, with French eyes,” says Guitarist Laurent Brancowitz. “We had a filtered vision of what was going on. So we filled the rest with our fantasies and it shaped our sound.” Not understanding which acts were hip, they borrowed wholesale, lifting a Cars riffs here, a guitar sound from Hall & Oates there. They tried country chord progressions with disco basslines – anything, as long as it wasn’t French.

That affinity with American music may explain why Phoenix are on the verge of succeeding in the US, where so many French bands have failed. Their latest album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, entered the iTunes chart at No 2. At their sold-out gigs in New York’s Central Park, tickets were going for double face value outside.

“Before you go on stage, you feel something. It’s electric,” Mars says of playing in America. “When we played Las Vegas, someone told us they’d heard one of our songs blasting in Caesar’s Palace. We feel like we’re part of the culture and it wasn’t like that before.”

Phoenix have returned to the United States again and again, to build a fanbase the old-fashioned way, in half-empty clubs and on college radio. They’ve never performed in Phoenix, Arizona, but they’ve played its twin city, Scottsdale, many times. In Lawrence, Kansas, two girls begged to get on the bus, complaining tearfully that they’d never seen the ocean.

“In America, there is a culture of welcoming musicians,” says Brancowitz. “In France, if you play music you are a Gypsy – they check your ID and your belongings. Even in the midwest, if you say to Grandma that you are playing a gig, she wants to hug you. In France, she will be afraid.”

It took them a decade to be accepted back home. Writing in English led to accusations of selling out and made it harder to get airplay, owing to the Toubon law, which mandates a certain percentage of French-language songs on the radio. Gigs were such shambolic affairs that they were accused of hiring session musicians to play on their discs. But finally, with their fourth album, they have become part of their own culture, too.

Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, despite the intentional hubris of its name, is an unlikely breakthrough record. The opening track, Lisztomania, is about the hysteria that pianist Franz Liszt caused at his recitals, previously the subject of a Ken Russell film starring Roger Daltrey. The big US radio hit, 1901, apparently concerns the art nouveau movement in Paris, but Mars won’t confirm it. What is certain is that it has an utterly shameless chorus – “it’s 20 minutes ’til last call, you’re going hey-ey-ey-ey-ey-ey-ey” – that has ruled college dancefloors all summer. Live, it’s their final encore.

There are at least three towns called Versailles in the United States: in Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. They all pronounce it Ver-Sales. Despite their enthusiastic embrace of all things American and disdain for their own pop culture, Phoenix are as exotic here as foie gras and socialised medicine. “If we came from Versailles, Kentucky, we would not like bluegrass,” says Brancowitz. “We would think it was backwards music, sung by racists. But we love bluegrass. For us it has very mysterious harmonies.”

Tanto perseguir a Y.A.S. y al final ha salido el disco y ni me he enterado; vaya que salió en junio, se llama “Arabology” y se lo ha editado Universal, o sea por la puerta grande… Esto era el proyecto de Mirways (ex productor de Madonna) y la cantante árabe Yasmine Hamdan, y como primer single sacaron este “Get It Right” que se ve que era un descarte del “Music” de la ex-mujer de Guy Ritchie. El mix que le hizo Felix Da Housecat ya lo colgué en su día, pero ya he decidido que me quedo con la original….

Hace poco colgaba en el blog la mezcla que The Teenagers habían hecho de sus colegas parisinos Housse De Racket; pues ahora ha salido el vídeo del tema, dirigido por Frank Seiler y Arnaud Delor, y trae una de las imágenes más interesantes de lo que va de año en el mundo del vídeo clip: la de los dos componentes pasando por debajo de una raqueta gigante medio hundida en el desierto. El Ep que lleva el mismo nombre sale este próximo 26 de octubre, y es una pena que no sea Lp porqué yo tengo ganas de más…….

Unos franceses que están locos por la música de los ochenta? esto me suena…. Fortune son de París, y está sacando su segundo Ep llamado “Highway”, que a parte de venir con la original version, también lleva un par de mezclas del tema del mismo nombre, hechas por dos americanos: Eli Escobar y James Pants. Synth pop en estado puro, y con esto me viene la pregunta: si en esta década se ha abusado tanto del sonido de los ochenta, y ahora parece que toca recuperar el de los noventa, al final habrá sonido que identifique la década del 2000?

No, no es un titular de la revista Cuore, pero sí es la demostración que la unión de tres genios personas con talento, no siempre tiene que dar excelentes resultados. Por partes. Alex Gopher puede considerarse ya, una leyenda del house francés, era uno de los dj’s de referencia en los noventa, y aunque su edición de discos es bastante limitada, sí que tiene en su haber, multitud de maxis o remezclas y para gente de todo tipo. Para celebrar sus quince años de actividad mezcladora, ha decidido sacar un disco doble recopilatorio con sus mejores mezclas hechas a partir del 2004 y algún tema inédito, bajo el nombre de “My New Remixes”. Lo interesante del cd, a parte de las mezclas hechas para Ladyhawke, autoKratz, WhoMadeWho, Fischerspooner o Kraftwerk, es que uno de los temas inéditos que contenía, es una colaboración con Air y Etienne de Crecy. El resultado se puede escuchar en el video, y tampoco es para tirar cohetes, personalmente, me empieza a gustar a partir del minuto 3 cuando el asunto se empieza a animar…… El disco sale el 2 de noviembre y por cierto, Etienne de Crecy estará en el The Loft de Razzmatazz el próximo viernes 23 de octubre.

Al final el disco de Phoenix, no me gustó tanto como pensaba que me gustaría con ese pedazo de dos singles que lanzaron, pero también se dio la circunstancia que en la época que lo sacaron, había competencia mil, y lo dejé un poco de lado. Pero bueno, lo que no se puede negar es que se lo curran con los fans, y que estos reciben por su parte, mailing bastante a menudo. Hace nada que regalaron un mix que les hizo Davendra Banhart para el tema “Rome”, y ahora lo hacen con uno de Animal Collective para “Love Like A Sunset”. Así da gusto, si señor.

Voici mon clip coup de coeur de la semaine, aussi bien pour la qualité et l’histoire qu’il raconte que pour le bon son électro qu’il dégage.

C’est extrêmement frais, du son électro, façon french touch même s’ils sont anglais, le style du clip rappelle étrangement celui de Modjo “Lady” et franchement en son de fond ça passe super bien !

Los británicos Friendly Fires, de los que sigue sin gustarme la voz del cantante, han hecho una mezcla muy especial del single de Phoenix llamado Fences. La canción es sí, no estaba nada mal, y fue una de las primeras en filtrarse del “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix”. Ahora con esta mezcla le han dado un giro más electrónico que creo prefiero al original. Mientras escribía el post, también estaba pensando si ese disco de los franceses estará a finales de este año, como lo mejor del 2009…. yo al principio hubiera dicho que sí sin reservas, pero visto el balance, y lo poco que lo he escuchado aún no sé donde caerá en mi lista….
