What is the privacy act to me? Well let’s just say that however you act in public or behind closed doors you are entitled to your own privacy and should be able to handle it without cameras and tabloids…but being a celebrity has it’s pros and cons.
When the media bites it’s teeth into a story they’re going for the jugular and will not let go until they get the public in a frenzy, and for me there are far too many more important issues at hand than trying to find out who got the tail end of the Tiger…

Personally I could care less about what the Woods, Lettermans, Bryants and others who haven’t been under the infidelity scope does. There is a price you pay and for regular folks the price isn’t that high and no one really gives a damn and it’s silenced quickly…

If the Tiger has been caught by the tail what right do we have to publicize his issues; The legal side of the accident has been handled; can you subtract $164.00 from billions?

Let his family deal with his issues, we as the public have no rights to interfere into his personal life…He’s a great athlete and has made a name for himself and if he is trying for another name, then so be it…No one is perfect and I’m not excusing his behavior if what he’s being accused of is an actual fact but it still stands for “Privacy”…

How about we take a look in your closet or your back door…What will we find?
I’m not afraid of what’s in my closet, I’m afraid of it getting out!

I am lucky not having to partake in Christmas shopping. I can’t stand the frenzy and wastage, with children receiving far too many presents.

When I lived in Holland we did not get presents at Christmas, but instead on the 5th of December at Sinterklaas (Saint Nicholas). The tradition in our family was to pull a name of a family member out of a hat and buy a small present, that had to be accompanied by a cheeky poem about that person. The poems were read out on the evening when we opened our parcels.

I came; I wrote; I WON!

THIS. IS. NANO!

Let the celebrations begin! All of the hard work devoted to my ROUGH draft has paid off, my friends. And boy, do I feel GREAT!

WORD COUNT: 50,404

PERCENT OF SANITY LOST: 84.7%

RELIEF INDEX: 42

TOTAL COFFEE CUPS CONSUMED: 1

TOTAL RANDOM OUTBURSTS AT FAMILY MEMBERS: 11

MISSED SHOWERS: 3

HEADACHES: 4

SICKNESSES: 1

DAYS OFF: 2

FOOTBALL GAMES WATCHED: 2

NEAR-QUITS: 5

TEMPER TANTRUMS: 1

DAYS OF SCHOOL MISSED: 1

TOTAL HOMEWORKS MISSED: 0

Damn, I’m good. Though slightly less sane for it. So what if I have to spend the rest of my life in a padded room? I don’t care. I wrote half of a novel.

That’s right. 50,404 words in, and I’m only halfway done with my actual plot. The question now is: can I stay committed? Frankly I believe I must, with that CreateSpace offer waiting to be redeemed. I can’t miss the opportunity to get a copy of my very own novel.

Heck, maybe I’ll get lucky and actually publish it professionally. That would be awesome, but is it realistic? Maybe, maybe, maybe.

This month is full of maybes.

Thankfully, the one definite YES I can give you is if you ask: Did you win?

YES.

And I am freaking proud of it. It’s difficult managing to write 50,000 words in November. It’s a hectic month with the holiday and all the projects I got assigned with Thanksgiving themes (Sooo elementary, btw…) Regardless, I am pretty darn excited. It was hard, don’t get me wrong, but I accomplished it. Oh, yes. I accomplished it.

The pressure to win this month was maddening; I kept wanting to rip my own hair out. Maintaining my plot line and not killing off my characters proved to be more difficult than I ever expected. But I love all of them, even though I make horrible threats and brandish weapons when I need to assert my authority. Luckily, they continued to cooperate despite my wickedness.

It’s over. I’m elated. I’m sort of sad. But April is Script Frenzy, writing a 100-page script in one month. Now THAT might just be interesting…not to mention a good distraction while I await NaNo 2010.

Above all things, I promise to keep you updated.

Even though like three people read this. Sometimes.

Next blood drive: Dec. 4th. Ohh yeah.

I’m not really a “shopper”.

That does surprise some of the ladies I know. And this being the infamous “Black Friday”, I find it more enjoyable to steer clear of the shopping areas around town. Sure, I do hear that there are some bargains out there to be had, but personally, the stress level involved doesn’t seem worth it.

Recently, I did hear about the person who “died” being trampled by the stampede of shoppers. So in order to somehow avoid this “frenzy” from happening, some of the stores are starting the “Black Friday” at midnight the night before………………

Thanksgiving Day seems to get shorter every year in order to jump-start the purchasing of Christmas gifts. Christmas decorations were going up before Thanksgiving, instead of the traditional days afterwards. We don’t seem to get to enjoy the actual holiday, because of the “selling” of the next one in line.

There are those of us who have decided to not enter into this madness of society, and to slow down and enjoy the holidays as “Holy-Days” – as they were intended.

“If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.” (Col. 3: 1-2)

Ward off the “frenzy” with “faith” in the living Christ who shows us what really matters – and have peace this Christmas season.

At the newsroom In the aftermath of the Egypt-Algeria game in Sudan, and as we frantically were gath

At the newsroom

In the aftermath of the Egypt-Algeria game in Sudan, and as we frantically were gathering information and contacts for our coverage, we also had to sit down and discuss the flood of information – or the lack of it at times.

Every TV show on Wednesday night had covered the ordeal of those who traveled to Sudan. Phone calls were pouring in from those frightened by attacks by Algerian fans and those who can’t get to or inside the airport. People we spoke to for our stories weren’t short of their own horror stories.

But it seemed to be only in Egypt’s mind, because on the other hand, the news agencies either ignored it or referred to it as minor incidents. By Friday morning I started doubting myself. There were two parallel worlds, one where people were traumatized and another where nothing of significance happened.

Pictures were only available of the game, but no photos on the wires of what happened afterwards. But as my friend — a person I trust who gave me a first hand account of his experience there — told me, “Our first reaction when attacked was not to take pictures, but to protect ourselves.”

He did send me photos of the shattered windows of their bus, which we ran in the paper.

But this led to some important questions: How accurate are the reports we are getting? How can we validate them? It’s not possible that thousands have agreed on one story, but are they exaggerating? Are we falling in the trap of sensationalization? Are we getting too caught up in the details that we are failing to see the bigger picture?

Seeing the media frenzy that followed was also worrying. The state-run official satellite station, El-Masreya, ran footage of the Thursday night demonstration. (For those of you who don’t know, for state TV and media, demos don’t happen). Many TV shows crossed the line (not a fine line) that separates coverage to outward agitation of the masses, some even calling for targeting Algerians in Egypt. It’s the same type of irresponsible media that fueled the masses in Algeria with false reports. (Mainly the death of Algerians during the game in Egypt, which the Algerian government denied. The denial didn’t find a place in some newspapers that had confirmed these alleged deaths.)

Alaa Mubarak speaking on TV (a rare occurrence for the media shy son), the initial tolerance for the protests near the Algerian embassy, and the liberty in which media was allowed to report on and fuel the anger were factors to consider.

After the initial story that ran in the Friday edition, we ran more stories the following day: more eyewitnesses’ accounts, the diplomatic relations between Egypt and Algeria, a story about Alaa Mubarak speaking on TV, and of course a story about the demonstrations that took place on Thursday and Friday.

But in doing so, we tried to be careful with the wording. Not sensational but not subdued either. Report it as is. Focus on the facts. I hope we didn’t mess up or miss a word here or there.

Objectivity, the first lesson any journalist learns, can sometimes seem like an elusive goal.

My take on the frenzy: When did Alaa become the hero?

After sending the paper to print and during the two days I took off, I had the chance to talk to more people, not about their experience in Sudan but about their reactions here in Cairo to the whole thing.

The most worrying realization was that many felt more humiliated by this incident than the numerous tragedies that have marred our recent history: from train accidents to the death of over 1,000 people over the course of few hours when their ferry sank in the Red Sea (and the subsequent escape of its owner).

I’m not trying to belittle the incident or what people have went through last week in Sudan. I don’t have the slightest doubt that this happened. Although it’s difficult to prove with material evidence, since people were running away from the attacks rather than clashing with the attackers, it’s still traumatizing for any person to be chased down the streets of a foreign city (or their hometown for that matter). Whether the Algerian government is complicit in this by intentionally allowing more violent fans to travel needs to be probed. Justice needs to be served. The failure of the Sudanese security to enforce order and protect its Egyptian visitors needs to addressed as well. We also need to revise the official response after the bus carrying the Algerian players was pelted by stones on their way from the airport.

But let’s put it all in perspective.

This incident is given more space, in state and private media, than other more tragic ones. Without scientific research, it’s easy to notice the difference between portraying the ordeal of the fans who returned and the ordeal of the families that spent nights (stress the ‘s’ here) in Red Sea towns waiting for news on the fate of their loved ones after the ferry sank in 2006. No masses were agitated on the scale we saw over the weekend. No actors or singers cried on live TV from the shock of it. No one felt humiliated when the case was referred to misdemeanor court or that the owner of the ferry was tried in absentia, because he left the country. Not in disguise but like any respectable citizen traveling abroad with the seal of government consent on his forehead.

Remember no people were chased down streets or had their buses pelted with stones then; they were merely left to die in freezing water and their corpses were left floating in open water, all 1,035 of them.

It’s only when the anger would be directed to an outside enemy is it allowed to be fueled and to mushroom. And not any enemy. People were beaten in Tahrir in March 2003 when they tried to march to the US embassy to protest the Iraq War. They were described as barbaric and accused of vandalism. Last week, the media and the ministry of interior (which usually takes days to issue a statement, that if they decided to acknowledge the existence of an incident) hailed the protest at the Algerian embassy that left a lot of shattered glass in Zamalek as “civilized.”

This has led many to the verge of hysteria and some willingly fell off that cliff. The hysteria I’m talking about here can be summarized in the willingness of many to attack any person just because he or she is Algerian. Someone, usually sane, told me over the weekend he would randomly attack any Algerian he sees in Cairo. What about XX, an Algerian friend? What if the man you are attacking has just spoken in your favor? What if it’s a woman? An old woman?

This hysteria won’t only have violent irreversible repercussions but has the ability of distracting people from the right ways to seek justice and also other important issues on the local front.

The idea that Egyptians are allowing many to cash in on their ordeal is equally worrying. Aside from celebrities, Alaa Mubarak’s phone interjection on TV has left me speechless.

Suddenly, the business-savvy son of the president who’s been in power for 28 years has become the hero. He’s angry, he wants to avenge the masses and like the rest of the Egyptians he feels humiliated. Suddenly, he is speaking against Egypt’s policy of political posturing, a policy that thrived during his father’s reign (except for selected enemies).

Alaa’s popularity is off the chart. The past 28 years and his other ‘business interjections’ were instantly forgiven and forever forgotten.

Sorry, but I draw the line here: When Alaa rises in popularity as hysteria reigns.

any day now..any day now

The human resources department a.k.a. as welfare has a specific program for single men and women. By default each agency operates the same, the DHS is no different. It makes sense to categorized based on particular needs and priority. When there are children and families involved they tend to move a bit faster. This is not to say they’re moving in any way shape or form in an expedient manner. It just operates under different criteria. I am confident that there are many horror stories that go untold, of persons going through traumatic circumstances and the system has only helped in putting some one over the edge.

This is not to say there are not a few caring people that want to help. But the majority, especially in the poor areas they serve are severely lacking in real help. I mean discerning or weeding out those that abuse the system versus those that really need attention. Its like they have instructions to help as little people as possible.

Being a social worker should require more skills. The people that work in these places are only human with families as well. Seeing all this despair must be disillusioning, but at the same time there are plenty that should not be working in this capacity.

Hopefully, you don’t get a case worker that is bitter, or is having a bad day because you are in for quite a ride. The caseworker that was assigned to me that day, because that changes too when I applied for these services barely spoke three words. In the waiting room for 5 hours to finally sit with a person who does not even look at you. Typing something or other as you sit there eager to hear something positive or encouraging. Five minutes later its over and “sign here, here and here”.. I’ve spent more time drinking my coffee for God’s sake!.

I tolerated the procedure with patience. Working myself up in to a frenzy as 90% do is not helpful. This I witnessed in my adventures with the human resources department and the department for homeless services which I will speak more about as my story develops. They need to remove and replace the word human in their title to something more suited to this endeavor.

Force of destruction fury and fear, oceans of bloodletting and death draw near
Bred only to fight and to kill, my axes swinging arcs of death
Unholy bloodshed and chaos, your lungs choke and fill with your last dying breath
Rabid aggressor, frenzy of violence
Exuding evil and deadly malice
Skulls hanging from chains, crowns of slaughtered kings
Cries of headless victims, haunt my every dream
Born to extinguish light from eyes
I am the despoiler… of human life
Die, die, die, my blade deep in your chest.

The Fiend 1972

Director: Robert Hartford-Davis

Writer: Brian Comport

Starring Patrick Magee, Ann Todd, Tony Beckley, Madeiline Hinde, Suzanne Leigh, Percy Herbert and David Lodge

This film caught my eye when I saw it as a recent new release on Netflix, so I thought I would take a chance and rent it. I would have to say, it is definitely a look see. It is a film that combines Alfred Hitchcock’s Frenzy with Psycho. Just with a far more sleazy and exploitative bent to it. The main thing that interested me was that it had Patrick Macgee of A Clockwork Orange fame in a central role. I have always dug his work, and was curious to see him playing a sinister religious pastor in this film. This is also a film that is very timely, as it’s central theme is the fanaticism of religious zealotry. With what is happening in the world today, I think that theme really hits home in this film. Also, one of the main characters is diabetic and has their life put in danger due to the habits of the religious doctrine, with no regards to their health issues. That really struck a nerve with me, since I am also a diabetic. The film also relies heavily on sexual sleaze and exploitation, which really works in its favor. I think without that touch the film would not be as memorable or as exciting.

The plot basics are this, in London a sinister sect of Christianity that calls themselves “the Brethren” and lead by a controlling and unfeeling minister (Magee), has been rising in popularity. The Minister has a controlling aspect over Birdy Wemsy (Todd), who is a diabetic and has periods where she is unsure of her reality. She is watched over by her son Kenny (Beckley), who is spiraling into madness. He begins to stalk young girls and killing them, rationalizing that he is baptizing them for the Lord. We then meet Brigitte Lynch (Hinde) a reporter who decides to investigate “The Brethren” and soon discovers the bizarre things that Kenny is doing. While this is happening the Minister coaxes Birdy into fasting and her being a diabetic, could make that fatal for her. As Kenny spirals deeper into his depravity and madness, his mother goes off the deep end with the Minister and who knows what this will drive Kenny to do?

This is a good film. Hartford-Davis direction has a slow build of menace throughout the film. It definitely takes its own leisurely pace to get going and that kind of pacing may not be for everyone, but it worked very well for me. He stages the murder scenes very well and I did enjoy how he went back and forth from one murder to a baptism, making a great analogy there. The script is very good too, it is all about the manic zealotry of fringe cults and the themes are never beaten over your head, but are just a organic development of the development of the story. The cast is the best part of the film. Magee is dynamic as the sinister Minister of “The Brethren”. He commands the screen with every moment he is on screen. Beckley as the psychotic Kenny is very good too and reminds me a lot of Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates. I also liked Todd as Birdy, she was really the only character you felt any sympathy for. You really hoped she woke up and saw what the Minister was doing, but she was just too deluded and too ensconced in the cult of “the Brethren” to get past it. There is not much SFX in the film, it is more about mood and atmosphere than showing in full bloody revelry the grisly murders. If anything, this film relies on T & A more than any thing else and it does that really well. I recommend this to exploitation film fans and for fans of Hitchcockian films.

This one gets 3 out of 5

<object width=”425″ height=”344″><param name=”movie” value=”http://www.youtube.com/v/j7gEw40BTDE&hl=en&fs=1&”></param><param name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true”></param><param name=”allowscriptaccess” value=”always”></param><embed src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/j7gEw40BTDE&hl=en&fs=1&” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” allowscriptaccess=”always” allowfullscreen=”true” width=”425″ height=”344″></embed></object>

Turns out it’s just a virus and, like I’ve always known, the infirmary here is incapable of handling

Turns out it’s just a virus and, like I’ve always known, the infirmary here is incapable of handling anything more than sitting in their office stupidly. They just can’t deal with anything.

I literally went there last year to have a paper signed, and sat for 20 minutes while they called the wrong person, even after I was clearly the only person sitting there. Somehow Kathryn became Kaitlyn and they made no attempt to fix it. So I’m not surprised that if someone showed up coughing and with a fever of 102* that they would just be like, “Oh, you have the swine flu because regular flu season hasn’t started. Just go home.” Idiots.

So the frenzied cleaning my other roommates and did last night (Clorox-ing all the counters and doorknobs, opeing the windows, and throwing out her toothbrush) probably wasn’t so drastically necessary.

But being sick sucks, and hopefully virus gilr will take medicine from now, something she hasn’t done all semester, making the rest of us sick, too.

Endings can be such relief that you almost burst into tears. The school fete was on today and I have never heard so much screaming in my life (worse than the labour ward on the Queen’s birthday weekend when the anaesthetist was off playing golf). I have also never seen so much sugar and msg in the one spot before. Nearing the end of the day the hysteria level was up to high frenzy and I was just waiting for someone’s head to explode (all the while hoping it wouldn’t be one of my little treasures). Vomit inducing rides meant double dipping on some of the junk food stalls while the teenagers refilled their guts for the next onslought. When Nos1&2 decided that they were tired and wanted to go home I almost fell to my knees in gratitude. I’m sure the school made a squillion but I have to wonder, since we all donated things and basically bought them back, that it might have been easier just to ask for the cash. Easier yes, but not nearly as much intensive FUN.

To update you on the new puppy situation, I have been so tired I have decided to take some different advice from the doggy discussion forums. One particular thread was discussing whether or not puppies could sleep outside. There was much to-ing an fro-ing when a very short response caught my attention – “Jeez country dogs must be jealous of these city dogs”. My brain snapped back into gear. Quite right matey. All my life dogs have been outside animals. This new obsession for having them inside is considerably odd and basically a nuisance. I have now put them both out together and so be it. I can still get my whole night’s sleep and they can sort out their “issues”. Once again, I just love Google. You can just keep going until you get the answer you want – the one that justifies what you want to do anyway.

Short and sweet today – need to recover my equilibrium. Very grateful for the passing of time – otherwise we’d never get to the end of these events we can’t avoid but must suffer through.

Nos1&2 too tired to think about gratitude today – I think the msg in the popcorn is backing up on them

AS ALWAYS there is open mic and Tuesday, November 24 guest artist-from-away Catherine Owen will be reading while touring her sixth collection of poetry, Frenzy.

Catherine Owen has been published in literary magazines across Canada, Germany, Britain and Australia and been translated into Korean, Italian and Turkish. She has six collections of poetry out from Exile Editions, Wolsak & Wynn, Mansfield and Anvil Press, and plays bass/sings in two metal bands.

Frenzy is a sequence of muse-quests published by Anvil Press in Vancouver.

Frenzy follows archetypal and personal artists as they seek sources for creation in relationships, travel, music, myth and nature. The poems range in form from the “flood-ghazal” a reinterpretation of the 9th century Persian lyric, to a series of prose poems and a long piece that details a photographer’s pilgrimage down a West Coast beach to find the source of her desire to remain an artist in this world.

Catherine looks forward to returning to PEI, the place where her ancestors first arrived in Canada over 200 years ago.
