For every yin there is a yang. Blue States have to deal with Red States,  Superman has Lex Luthor, Jesus has Satan,  Charlie Brown has Lucy…  then there’s St. Nick and Krampus… 

Some people go bonkers for Halloween, some for Christmas, some for the 4th of July.  I gleefully anticipate the evening of December 5th, the Krampusnacht.

Krampus is a mythical creature,  and an oddball survivor of a pre-Christian pagan tradition. In Germany, Austria and other Alpine regions the Christmas season is welcomed in by this towering, shaggy creature with a dangling long tongue, goblin’s head,  horns and cloven feet. The Krampusslauf, or Krampus run, which is usually held on the night of Dec. 5th, has the satyr-like Krampus roaming city and countryside alike.   Clad in chains and carrying a birch switch, his job is to be the antithesis of St. Nick, and to terrify and punish misbehaving children by taking back the gifts that Santa has left for them, exchanging a lump of coal instead. Really bad children might even get carried off in his sack.

Krampus gets his name from “Krampen,” the old German word for claw.  Before St. Nicholas arrives with his sack of gifts on Dec. 6th, local men dress up in goat and sheep skins, wearing elaborate hand-carved and painted masks. They make the rounds in parades for local children, waving birch switches at them and ringing loud cowbells. In some towns, kids are even encouraged to run a Krampus-gauntlet, dodging swats and lunges from the Horned Punisher.   Most often the Krampusnacht is an excuse for the locals to dress up in scary costumes, get drunk, create mayhem and frighten children and women.  In some regions the tradition even includes the birching of single females. 

Over the centuries Christianity encompassed many rural pagan traditions throughout Europe, and Santa Claus and the Krampus are no exception.  St. Nick is a Christianization of a handful of traditional winter solstice figures, who were conglomerated into Santa after Christians moved into Austria.  In Norse mythology Santa was most heavily influenced by the Norse God Thor, who had a long white beard and rode through the skies in a flying chariot. His dark alter-ego was Loki, a devilish trickster with big horns.  While Thor was easily turned into St. Nick, Loki took a more subversive twist and became Krampus. The Krampusnacht dates back to a pagan ceremony that was widely practiced until the Inquisition, when impersonating a demon became punishable by death. In remote mountain towns the tradition survived in violation of the church’s edicts and in the 17th century Krampus was reincarnated as part of the Christmas celebration.  In pagan times there may have been a winter fertility feast held to honor the goddess Freya, but most of that has been replaced with Christian tradition, and we’ll never know for sure. Once the Christians criminalized these practices, the Krampus-fertility god evolved into a pretty intimidating creature with a swollen foot-long red tongue and cloven hooves, who forces himself on young women who  flee his advances.  In Victorian times, Krampus cards became very popular and often depicted the Krampus and his prodigious tongue assailing various Madchen. 
 
Growing up in Pennsylvania in the US, I am familiar with a lot of German customs, but this one was new to me.  When I first saw the photos and videos of St. Nick accompanied in a parade by shaggy horned demons I thought that the Austrians had gone nuts, but as I’ve learned more about the holiday, I’ve come to anticipate Krampusnacht more than any other part of the winter holidays, and I hope that we can institue a real one here in Chicago.  I am sure that Krampus  will grow in popularity, and his roots in pagan lore will be understood and appreciated again.

La data del 25 dicembre per la natività di Gesù fu una scelta della chiesa cattolica per inglobare i culti pagani, assorbirli e farli dimenticare. Il 25 dicembre era un giorno di festa importante per i popoli, religioni e culture molto distanti fra di loro, ma unite da questa ricorrenza, che celebrava sotto nomi diversi uno stesso significato: la fine dell’inverno e la rinascita della vita. L’uomo antico si sentiva parte della natura e guardava al sole come ad una delle principali fonti della creazione e come la potenza regolatrice dello scorrere delle stagioni. Il 25 dicembre segnava la festa del sole “invictus” il sole invincibile, poiché dopo il solstizio d’inverno del 21 dicembre, il giorno più corto con al notte più lunga, la luce riprendeva la sua vita, vinceva la tenebra, fino ad arrivare al 21 giugno, dove il giorno era più lungo della notte. Con questo significato simbolico il 25 dicembre era associato nel mondo antico, alla nascita o alla festa di personaggi divini: il dio Horus egiziano, raffigurato con sua madre Iside che lo teneva in braccio ( ricorda l’iconografia cristiana della Madonna col Bambino). Il dio Mitra indo-persiano, anche lui partorito da una vergine, e che veniva chiamato “il salvatore”. Il dio babilonese Shamash che era il dio del Sole e della predizione perché il sole vede tutto: passato, presente e futuro; il dio Tammuz sempre babilonese nasceva anche lui in questo giorno e anche lui moriva per resuscitare dopo tre giorni. La scelta del 25 dicembre fu un tentativo riuscito della Chiesa di Occidente di adattare gli antichi culti, con i loro rituali alla nuova religione; invece la Chiesa di Oriente scelse la data del 6 gennaio per la nascita di Gesù, per differenziarsi dagli antichi culti, e tuttora le chiese copta, armena e ortodossa festeggiano la natività in questo giorno.

Durante il pontificato di papa Leone Magno (440-461) venne sancita definitivamente questa data come “il Natale di Gesù”, nel 536 d.C. l’imperatore Giustiniano chiuse l’ultimo tempio di Iside in Egitto ed il Natale si affermò come festa cristiana in tutto l’impero. Le tradizioni dell’albero di Natale e del presepio invece hanno una storia più semplice. L’albero apparteneva all’immaginario collettivo nordico come simbolo della vita e della fertilità, ma la tradizione dell’albero addobbato così come la conosciamo noi, la dobbiamo ad una invenzione del 1500 del protestante Martin Lutero, che alla notte della Vigilia, si trovò fuori sulla neve e vide gli abeti ghiacciati risplendere sotto la luce della luna, questo spettacolo gli piacque così tanto da voler provare a riprodurlo e per questo adornò un abete con candele e nastri luccicanti. Questa usanza fu introdotta nell’Europa del sud nel 1840, dalla moglie del duca di Orléans, Elena di Maclenburg, che fra la sorpresa della corte, lo fece preparare nei giardini delle Tuileries. Il presepe è una usanza solo cristiana, derivata da una rappresentazione che San Francesco fece per la prima volta a Greccio (Rieti) nel 1223, ispirandosi ad una tradizione del IX secolo, che rievocava scene evangeliche, attraverso rappresentazioni viventi e aggiungendovi scene pastorali.

La cometa sul presepe comparve solo dopo il 1301, infatti quell’anno apparve per la prima volta quella, che poi venne definita come “la cometa di Halley”, i contemporanei ne furono molto colpiti, e Giotto, il grande pittore, in un suo quadro nella cappella degli Scrovegni, dipingendo l’Epifania, sopra la Capanna pose questa stella per ricordare ai posteri l’avvenimento.

Babbo Natale invece, pur avendo alle spalle una tradizione che trova le sue radici su San Nicola Vescovo di Mira in Asia Minore, è molto prosaicamente l’invenzione di un grafico pubblicitario americano, per lanciare in modo accattivante il prodotto della Coca Cola di cui il povero Babbo Natale portava i colori, rosso e bianco. Infine il Vischio, simbolo di buon auspicio e di fortuna, va ricondotto ai riti della fertilità, poiché la rinascita aveva bisogno di procreazione. Le tribù germaniche consideravano chiunque passasse sotto il vischio “ baciato” dalla dea Freya, la dea della fertilità, ecco perché per l’anno nuovo ci baciamo sotto il vischio!

The Sword son uno de tantos grupos que se supone que vienen a salvar el heavy metal. La diferencia es que éstos molan. O por lo menos las sensaciones que deja escuchar su último disco, Gods of the Earth son muy buenas. Tras su primer disco, consiguieron telonear a Lamb of God y meter una canción en Guitar Hero 2 (Freya, de su primer álbum).

Esto les permitió juntar pasta para grabar el segundo. En 2008, Metallica se fijaron en este grupo casi principiante y se los llevaron de gira en la sección norteamericana del World Magnetic Tour (a España no vinieron, aquí su papel lo desempeñó Mastodon). Tras esta gira, la canción The Black River apareció en Guitar Hero: Metallica. Dura unos 8 minutos, así que no es sencillita, no…

Inventar, no han inventado nada, es más, se les compara con los Black Sabbath de Ozzy, lo cual no está nada mal, la verdad. La producción busca precisamente ese sonido un poco “guarro” de los discos antiguos, y queda francamente bien. Las letras hablan de temas fantásticos y mitológicos, sobre todo mitología nórdica, aunque en este caso la canción guarda relación con Canción de Hielo y Fuego, libro que deberíais leer todos.

En este libro, la Guardia de la Noche es un grupo de soldados que viven apartados del resto del mundo, defendiendo el muro de hielo que separa la civilización de los malvados bichejos que viven al otro lado. Cuando alguien se une a la Guardia, lo hace para siempre y se le prohíbe tener tierras, mujer, descendencia o cualquier otra cosa que le ate a la vida que llevaba antes. En general la gente que se apunta a algo así no es muy normalita, claro.

Well this week I’ve been treated to 2 different episodes of Merlin. 1 was the short clip that was produced for Children in need and the other was the proper episode.

The CIN episode was rather funny. Merlin and Gaius eating microwave ready meals, Morgana using products on her hair to keep it glossy and Gwen using the hairdryer (whilst in typical hairdresser style asking where she was going on her holiday this year. apparently a valid question since she was completely missing from the proper episode!), Arthur was tucked into bed (shirtless of course – yay!) with a pudsy bear and Uther was using his iphone. Great taste in phones Uther We even got Gaius saying “I don’t believe it” at the end which was Richard Wilson’s old catchphrase from his Victor Meldrew days. Yay!

Now for this week’s episode.
I wasn’t too certain what to expect from the episode today. I certainly wasn’t expecting as much Arthur in it as there was. Form the title I’d deduced that our guest of the week (Freya the druid) would turn out to be the lady of the lake from legend and that she’d probably end up dead by the end of the episode. All the talk of them running away together obviously wasn’t going to happen.
The episode was rather focused on Merlin, Freya, Arthur and Gaius this week. King Uther was barely in it (except to declare as usual that Magic is evil and that all bad things that happen in Camelot are down to magic), Gwen put in a brief appearance just as Merlin was stealing one of Morgana’s dresses which lead to a funny conversation about moths taking over the castle) but poor Morgana was nowhere to be seen. Maybe she was on holiday somewhere nice?
Basic plot of the episode was that Merlin spots the druid girl in a cage being held by a bounty hunter and resues her. He then keeps her under the castle and steals food for her from Arthur. Merlin falls in love with Freya and they decide to run away together (although in all fairness he decides and she decides to run away from Merlin). Whilst all this is happening a beat (or something magical for Uther’s sake) is busy killing people in the lower town. Gaius puts 2 and 2 together to deduce that Freya is actually cursed and is killing people at night. Oops. Merlin then discovers she run away and sulks for a bit.
We then get warning bells and find Arthur and his band of men in red all chasing after poor Freya as she runs through the town to escape. Unfortantly it’s midnight and she turns into a giant winged cat and attacks them. Bit of a fight and our bounty hunter is killed. Freya the cat is then cornered by Arthur and his gang and he managed to stab her. It’s OK because Merlin has arrived and makes a statue almost fall on Arthur (has he forgotten who he’s meant to be looking after?) and Freya the cat escapes back to under the castle.
Merlin finds her bleeding to death (and without her clothes – how did she keep them every other time she changed and not this one?) and he sweetly stays with her as she dies. He carries her body to the lake (yes, same lake as always) and pops it into a boat that magically appears then floats her off into the lake where he magically sets fire to her body. Back in the castle Gaius is relieved to see Merlin is back and safe and then we see a sad Merlin cleaning Arthur’s boots. Even Arthur has noticed Merlin is sad but thinks it’s because he threw a bucket of water over him. Luckily a quick chat with Arthur and Merlin’s looking happier again. Phew!
The Merlin and Arthur scenes this week were cute. Merlin takes Arthur’s food for Freya and tells Arthur he’s feeding him less because he’s fat. He even magics away a chicken leg and 3 sausages when Arthur is sat in front of them. Dunno how he missed that one. Arthur defends Merlin when the bounty hunter is interrogating him about Freya which is kinda cute, especially when he notices his missing sausages!
The two best Merlin and Arthur scenes and when Merlin is running Arthur a bath and boils the water which poor Arthur then steps into and burns himself. To get revenge Arthur throws cold water over Merlin (Arthur in just a towel – yay!). The other good scene was when Arthur spots Merlin walking around the castle with a dress and tells him he doesn’t mind what he gets up to in his own time so long as he does a good days work. Very funny!
Next week reminds me of a previous episode. Poor Arthur is enchanted again and falls in love with a princess (now this series we’ve already had an enchanted Uther and last series we had enchanted Arthur…). Yet again poor Merlin will have to save the day. It looks quite good though.

Well everyone lately in my guild is talking about burn-out, and other fun things. A couple people have gone disappearing, and all I hear is complaining lately.

Last night as is our Thursday Night, we head into our continuous Ulduar to head deeper into Yogg-Saron.  I had a feeling it was going to be one of those nights….so I start flying straight up into the air, and falling, trying to see how close I can get to the ground before hitting Slow Fall. Well one time I thought it would funny to strip naked. Well I just got my Dress, and helm off. SPLAT. Right in front of people. Well I got rezzed, and I looked at myself it looked like I had a cape on. I loved the look. Someone said I looked like a gay superhero…Bah, I looked Cool as hell.

 Unfortunately Freya was giving us issues. I did get a little peeved, I hate when people pull a pack of something, and I’m doing a job for that pack, and they don’t check if I’m ready. All you need to do is look at my mana ba…..oh wait I’m a mage, no one cares about our mana bars. Silly me.

So again tempers get frayed abit, people discouraged. Oh well I had some fun, and it’s a game. People taking it way to serious. As for me,  I think I’ll don the superhero outfit, and fall on some horde tonight. They should change the lyrics to “It’s Raining Mages!”

Seriously What’s your problem you overgrown Weed. I was given the task to stop this guy. I had to switch to my arcane shatter spec, lay the slow down, still he just kept on coming at me….and coming. Frost Nova, Slow, Frostbolts, Blink, If I had a kitchen sink I would of tossed that.

Then when he got to me….Mana Shield…might of been wrapped in silk panties. One shotted.  As one lovely lady put it last night, it’s like getting done anally with no lube.

I was so upset with my performance on that plant, I was sick with myself. Though I think he’s one of those mobs you need some serious DOTs on.

Last nights raid, I just thought I did poor in general. Then again I don’t know if my heart was with it all that much. Coming off a sickness, and other crap going on. Maybe my mind wasn’t in the right place.

On another note, my Wizened Guild Leader has a rank of punishment called Searing Totem. Well she demoted me to that rank last night again for my Portal Tomfoolery, come on Darnassus over a Dalaran Portal…..Classic. Pffft bunch of squares I play with.

Is it just me or does Searing Totem, kind of phallic. I dunno, Flaming Penis, Searing Totem…..guess that’s what comes with a girl guild leader.

Oh well I’ll wear my Flaming Penis Rank with pride.

Der Freitag ist tatsächlich ein beliebter Tag zum Freien (Heiraten). Aber seinen Namen hat er von der germanischen Liebesgöttin Freya oder Freia, der Venus und Aphrodite rechts des Rheins.

I didn’t want to make this post.

After a short struggle – shockingly, horrifyingly short, just two weeks – Freya passed away last month from the fatal kitty disease, FIP.  The best way I can think of to memorialize her is just to repeat these three words over and over… “She was perfect.” I couldn’t have asked for a better kitty.

Claudio came to California for the last week of her life to help me take her to Animal Services for euthanizing, because Heaven knows, I couldn’t have done it alone. I said goodbye to the love of my life and put her in Claudio’s arms, and he walked her in while I cried at the car.

I love you baby. Thank you for being there when I need you.

Well, it’s been a month. Claudio and I talked about it and I’m going to try again. I’m not hoping to replace Freya, but I would like to fill this hole in my house and in my heart. Do I believe there is a cat better than Freya? Honestly…. no. But I know there are some darn stinkin’ cute kittens, and I’ve picked one out

As you read this, I’m in New Orleans, celebrating the wedding of my dear friend Nicole.  Turns out her middle name is Rhunette.  Let’s see if I can work in a subtle inquiry about that one in between “congratulations” and “yes, I’d love some more champagne!”

In any case, this is my first trip away without a laptop since … wow.  Since forever.  I can’t decided if it will be more disorienting to be away without kids or away without connectivity.

Either way, if there are any last minute celeb births or wacky news stories ’bout kids with wild names, I’m missing them.

• Laura Wattenberg asks if the conventional wisdom related to gender neutral names is over.  Me, I say yes.  While many names are still clearly gendered, I can imagine Kelly being reclaimed for boys, while names like Riley and Payton could remain in gender limbo indefinitely.  It’s not a bad thing, necessarily;
• Amy Ryan – she played Holly on The Office – has welcomed a daughter, Georgia Gracie;
• Coronation Street’s Samia Smith welcomed a daughter, Freya.  Other Coronation Street cast babies from 2009 include Alfie, Nyla, Rafal and Daisy.
