The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was started in the 1930′s in a time of economic hardship in the US. From 1935 to 1942, Mohansic Park (now Franklin D. Roosevent Park) housed a proud group of CCC men. This camp was unique in that these men were World War I veterans and named Co. 2218V, who scarred by the war, now faced the battle at home of being homeless and jobless. The Friends of FDR State Park has gathered much information on the camp and with community help will uncover more. Learn about the Mohansic CCCC camp once located in the FDR State Park in Yorktown. All programs are free & open to the public. www.yorktownhistory.org

Friends of Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) to host I Love My Park Day on Saturday, May 4

Volunteers Participating at Events across New York to Celebrate NY State Parks and Historic Sites

Yorktown Heights, NY:

Friends of FDR State Park will host volunteers at FDR State Park as part of more than 70 cleanup, improvement and beautification events happening statewide on Saturday, May 4. I Love My Park Day is an exciting statewide event to improve and enhance New York’s state parks and historic sites and bring visibility to the entire state park system and its needs. Volunteers from across the state will participate in cleanup, improvement, and beautification events at New York State parks and historic sites. Volunteers will celebrate New York’s state park system by cleaning up park lands and beaches, planting trees and gardens, restoring trails and wildlife habitat, removing invasive species, and working on various site improvement projects.

New Yorkers love their parks. Volunteers are willing to help maintain the beauty of New York’s treasured state parks and historic sites. Friends groups and volunteers are more important than ever to keep parks beautiful, clean, and welcoming for all to visit and enjoy.

Jane Daniels, President of Friends of FDR Park says “Everyone needs a friend and so do our state parks. So many of Yorktown and Cortlandt residents walk or jog in the park. Participating in I Love My Park Day helps a valued local resource.”

I Love My Park Day is coordinated at the statewide level by Parks & Trails New York (PTNY) in partnership with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP). Friends groups and park staff will oversee cleanup, improvement and beautification projects and work with volunteers.

New York State is a leader in parks and conservation because of a long history of stewardship and generosity of private citizens. Volunteer participation in a cleanup day will help enhance these important places during lean budget times and show elected leaders that there is strong public support for our park system.

Those interested in volunteering in the project at FDR State Park can register to volunteer by visiting http://www.ptny.org/ilovemypark or by calling 914-721-0598.

Roosevelt and Donald J. Trump State Parks is a non-profit group formed to provide a voice for the Park’s unique and diverse resources. We’re a group of Park users and friends whose efforts are dedicated to supporting and enhancing an irreplaceable component for our quality of life that these parks provide. Our goal is to provide opportunities for people to develop a special relationship with the Park and to contribute to the parks’ programs and stewardship.

The Friends group shares an appreciation for these Parks and their inestimable value to the surrounding region. The Park’s historic, naturual, cultural and recreational facilities greatly enrich our lives. We want to make sure that these exceptional resources continue to exist today and in the future.
