Tidak lama setelah Fring untuk Android diluncurkan, mereka mengumumkan bahwa versi baru dari fring sekarang telah tersedia. Dalam versi terbarunya, Fring bisa melakukan Video Calls melalui Skype, 3G, atau Wi-Fi.

Pada awal peluncuram, Fring versi terbaru hanya didukung oleh  Nokia 5800, X6, N97, N97 mini, N95 8G, N95 and N82. Kedepannya, akan didukung oleh lebih banyak lagi.

Manca un mese a Natale e cominciano ad arrivare novità :

Dopo essere stato rilasciato per Android la settimana scorsa, Fring è arrivato alla versione 4.0 che introduce la videochiamata via Skype ! Qui la notizia riportata da MobileBlog (e poi da BlogVoip), qui l’ annuncio sul Blog di Fring e qua sotto il video di presentazione della tanto attesa “nuova” funzione del programma di Mobile Voip

Per il momento sono supportati solo alcuni modelli Symbian dotati di touch screen e/o doppia fotocamera (Nokia 5800, N97, N97 mini, X6, N95, N95 8GB e N82), e dato che nel video viene annunciato il futuro supporto per altri modelli, spero (non tanto) che arrivi presto anche per l’ E61i , anche se sul mio (soprannominato “a riggiòla” …), Skype non ha mai funzionato … forse con la nuova versione … potrei togliermi lo sfizio …

Intanto un mio dilemma incombe su Fon (che potrebbe avere grandi vantaggi da questa notizia), sulla Fonera : Fonera 2.0g (sorry !) + con Fontenna o Fonera 2.0n ? Michelangelo, perchè quando mi rispondi, mi sorgono più dubbi ?

Direttamente dal canale ufficiale italiano di fring viene annunciata la possibilità di videochiamare via internet direttamente dal vostro cellulare, e gratuitamente, grazie alla funzione integrata in Skype…

You all know Fring, the application that brings Skype, ICQ, Facebook and other services to your mobile phones, right? Up until now you were able to chat with your pals and to make voice calls but as of today you can also take things to a new level. Enter mobile video calls through Skype.

Just a few days back the Fring app was made compatible with the smartphones powered by Android OS but today’s news is an even greater break-through.

Unfortunately, the Skype video call capabilities will be available to a limited number of supported devices (all of them are Nokia smartphones). Those include the touchscreen equipped Nokia X6, N97, N97 mini and 5800 as well as Nokia N95, N95 8GB and N82.

Fring, the mobile messaging and social communication tool that works on many smartphone platforms, is now available on the Android (s goog) platform. Users of Android phones can get the client software from the Android Market or from Fring’s WAP site.

Fring for Android works over 3G, GPRS or Wi-Fi connections. According to the company’s blog announcement:

“Android device users can now get onto fring (we know you’ve been missing us since some of you recently switched to Android devices) with (the first) free VoIP calls over Skype, MSN and GoogleTalk and via hundreds of SIP providers. As always you can see real-time presence and live chat with your ICQ, Yahoo! And AIM buddies too. You can also use Twitter there, as part of  your integrated contact list.”

The “we know you’ve been missing us” snippet in the announcement belongs there, as competitive applications such as Nimbuzz have already been available for Android for some time. Still, free VoIP calls over Skype with Fring will probably be pretty attractive to many users of Android phones, and Fring offers a number of options for keeping up with Twitter.

En el corto tiempo que he tenido mi 5800, XM, he logrado explorar varias aplicaciones, y este es el Top 10 de las aplicaciones que a mi parecer NO pueden faltar en un Nokia 5800 XM.

1 Fring

Para los que usan Skype, Windows Live Messenger, Google Talk, esté es uno de los programas indispensables, ademas de permitir llamadas sobre VoIP, es decir, si me conecto a una red Wi-Fi, o por medio de un plan de Datos, puedo llamar Gratis a cualquier persona que use Fring, a su teléfono, o realizar una llamada, Teléfono->PC, con Skype, Windows Live… o cualquiera de las redes sociales que soporta.

En está ultima versión tiene soporte para Twitter, y Facebook, así que puedo “Twittear” desde mi teléfono en cualquier momento.

2 Google Maps

Aunque Nokia tiene un EXCELENTE servicio de mapas, que genera rutas a partir de dos puntos, Google Maps, tiene una característica que no podemos negarle lo hace indispensable, se llama, latitude.

que nos permite ver en tiempo real donde están nuestros amigos. y lo mejor de todo no necesita GPS.

Este programa es sencillo pero de gran utilidad, permite tomar sreenshots, del 5800, así que gracias a esté es que se.

4. Qik

Ya se ha visto mucho sobre compartir Fotos, y Video,  Qik lleva la palabra “share” a otro nivel, ya que permite hacer streaming directamente desde el teléfono. Esto quiere decir que cualquier cosa que filme con mi teléfono puede ser visto en directo desde la pagina de qik, o sencillamente embeberlo en un blog, es así como hicimos la transmisión del concierto de the killers, en Colombia. (hasta que nos dió la bateria).

Este Navegador es mi Favorito, ademas en esta versión le han agregado la posibilidad de cambio de ventanas, y un gestor de claves, la verdad voto por este como el mejor navegador mobile.

Algunos Teléfonos de Nokia lo traen instalado, no es el caso de el Nokia 5800, pero para quienes vemos QR-Codes, aunque es algo geek, es algo divertido enviar mensajes codificados.

Convierte el Nokia 5800, en un reloj de mesa, bastante interesante y agradable a la vista, aprovechando la base que trae.

8. Adobe Reader Lite Edition

Es el lector oficial de Adobe, PERO es desarrollado por la misma empresa que hace Quick Office, aunque cuesta 15 USD, viene con garantía de 30 días, y también tiene una versión Trial por 7, la cual probé y  funciona muy bien.

Si el teléfono puede abrir pdf, por que no abrir un .docx?

Al igual que el PDF reader, está aplicación tiene un costo, de 19USD, pero permite abrir los archivos del conocido Microsoft Office 2007, es decir:

docx, xlsx, y , .ppt

también tiene su versión Trial que probé,

El archivo .docx no muestra las imágenes, pero la edición de texto es muy buena.

Los Archivos XLSx tienen soporte para formulas, además de una función de navegación directo.

Esta es una GRAN GRAN aplicación que trae Nokia, y está aplicación se puede introducir con una Gran Pregunta.

Nimbuzz, a Netherlands-based VoIP and messaging startup, is introducing a premium calling service called NimbuzzOut. This service is available via an upgrade of its mobile client, which is currently available from the iPhone’s iTunes Apps Store, the Ovi Store and GetJar. So far, Nimbuzz has offered a meta-client that works on PCs, Macs, Symbian, Android and the iPhone and allows you to sign into any IM service including Skype. NimbuzzOut is the first step toward revenue for the company, which has pulled in an undisclosed amount of funding from Mangrove Capital Partners, original backers of Skype. In addition to Skype, Truphone and Fring are two other competitors for this fast-growing service. Nimbuzz has been adding about 40,000 users a day, or about a million new registrations every month, and now has a total of over 10 million registered consumers. The company says nearly 30 percent of those registered are regular users.

Nimbuzz has certainly come a long way. At the time of its launch, almost three years ago, we were pretty critical of the VoIP-on-mobile service because it was a me-too offering that was quite a pain to use. A year-and-a-half later, Nimbuzz introduced a new meta client for the Symbian phones. It allowed you to sign into various IM clients. In addition, it allowed some basic VoIP calling, but it wasn’t really until they introduced the new iPhone client that Nimbuzz started to see some serious traction. My previous post gives a good overview of the Nimbuzz feature set.

The company just announced a super communication client for the iPhone that allows you to communicate in many different ways. For instance, you can make free calls over Wi-Fi to your IM buddies. You can also call folks on their landlines and mobile phones with SkypeOut using any one of Nimbuzz’s 10 VoIP partners including Gizmo5, Vyke, sipgate and A1 and, of course, Skype. This is a new feature in the service, and makes Skype In/Out Services more valuable.

These services also work over 3G and are described as “Nimbuzz Dial-Up VoIP” which essentially makes it possible to call others by dialing a local access number which then connects to anywhere in the world via Nimbuzz VoIP servers.

For the past month, I have been using the pre-release of NimbuzzOut on the iPhone to place calls to my far-flung group of friends and family. The calling prices are pretty good– about 8 cents a minute to India, 2 cents to the U.S., and 3 cents to the UK. If you look around, that is pretty much what you pay with most services — Skype is a bit more expensive.

The voice call quality is on par with Skype, which is still my communication method of choice for work-related calls. NimbuzzOut is dead simple to place calls: Just hit the call button, and you are good to go. You can, of course, use other calling services, but I don’t see any reason why considering Nimbuzz is offering good rates.

NimbuzzOut has a few features I personally like — you can natively use the phone client to buy additional minutes. I also like the fact that the client uses the native address book and doesn’t create a duplicate contact list. The Symbian client actually lets you edit, add and delete contacts from your address book.

There are a few things I don’t like: If you leave the notifications on, the client will run down your battery and leave the phone pretty useless. If you are using it on an iPhone, then you have to use the Wi-Fi connection, which makes me a tad upset because you can make Skype calls over 3G. You can make NimbuzzOut calls via 3G on Symbian phones, however.

Bottom line: If you are looking for a well-designed, easy-to-use, all-in-one messaging client that also makes cheap long-distance calls, then you don’t need to look any further than Nimbuzz. I have no qualms in recommending NimbuzzOut.

While I don’t claim to have a perfect set up, it seems to be flexible and I have very few problems. So in other words, it works for me! And as a “one man” business it is very easy to integrate new technology very quickly if needed. Anything to make life easier has to be good!

Computers

I have two. A desktop and a laptop. The desktop is where I do most of my “business work”. It is not connected to the internet. It is at least 6 years old and works flawlessly.

My laptop is connected to the web. The only work on it is my tax return program – because I have to file returns online. I do not play games on it and rarely download programs

Why two computers? Well, if a virus comes along and knocks me out, I can still work. Also, how can you hack into my work machine if it’s not connected to the internet………Yes, I take security very seriously.

Telephones

I do not have a landline. Bet that surprised you! Instead, I use Skype. No line rental and very cheap call rates. Skype is loaded on my laptop and I also have a separate Skype phone. Call quality is excellent and I rarely have a dropped call. Oh, and can video conference as well via webcam. Highly recommended.

I also have a mobile. Well two actually. Ones for business calls. The other is a Smartphone for private calls. I can do the following on the Smartphone:

• write this article as it has word, excel and PowerPoint loaded along with Acrobat Reader (PDF)
• download email and surf the net using “3.5G” – if available in the area. £7.50 p.m. For 500mb download limit. Doubt I download 500mb in a year! Cheap at the price though 
• I can also surf via my home Wi-Fi network
• sync contacts and diary with Outlook when connected to my laptop
• if I need to use my laptop when out and no Wi-Fi connection is available, I simply plug my phone in and use it as a modem. Somewhat slow, but it works
• and I have a nifty free program called Fring loaded. This gives me Instant Messaging, Facebook, Twitter and Skype all in one program.
• Oh, and it has a 6gb memory card with music etc. And my entire client files as well. And yes, it password protected and can only be accessed on my phone. No one else’s. How clever is that!!

So it’s a “proper” business phone. Not an iPhone toy (ouch).

Fax

Unbelievably, I do have a fax number as the odd person still likes to do things the olde fashioned way. What they don’t know is that I don’t have a fax machine. Instead I pay an annual subscription to Faxtastic for the number. When a fax is sent it arrives as a TIFF file via email. So I can access it wherever I am. Neat. And way cheaper and more reliable than a regular fax machine.

Software

The best bit of software I have is a PDF conversion program. I can convert word, excel and tax returns into PDF files and then email them straightaway. No postage and  instantaneous receipt. Well worth the investment.

Attenzione : L’ utilizzo di questi programmi richiede un piano dati Internet GPRS, EDGE, UMTS o HSDPA, le cui tariffe, condizioni d’ uso, prezzi e modalità di attivazione, sono presenti sui siti dei gestori di telefonia mobile. In alternativa, su cellulari adatti, è possibile utilizzare una connessione Wi-Fi. Non dite che non vi avevo avvertito !

Fring e Nimbuzz : Due programmi di Mobile Voip, di cui ho già parlato in questo articolo. Personalmente utilizzo di più il primo.

Opera Mini : Attualmente è il browser (programma per navigare in Internet) per cellulari forse più diffuso al mondo.

Yahoo! Go : Programma di Yahoo per la gestione della propria e-mail su dominio @yahoo.(com, it, etc…) e di altri servizi disponibile dal portale Yahoo (meteo, news, sport, Flickr), molto utile per il sottoscritto.

JoikuSpot : Programma molto utile che consente di trasformare un cellulare Wi-Fi dotato di un piano di connessione dati mobile (GPRS, EDGE, UMTS o HSDPA, meglio gli ultimi due) in un hotspot Wi-Fi, molto utile qualora non si abbia la possibilità di poter fare tethering in caso assenza di cavo di collegamento USB, chiavetta bluetooth o altro dispositivo che permette di collegare un cellulare ad un pc e quindi ideale con uno o anche più portatili.

Google Maps : La versione per cellulari del famoso programma di mappe di Google.

Google Mobile App : Versione per cellulari del famoso motore di ricerca.

Snaptu : Aggregatore di servizi web, attualmente la mia applicazione preferita per visualizzare Facebook su cellulare.

Facebook Mobile : Applicazione ufficiale di Facebook per cellulari. N.B. : Non è possibile utilizzare la chat …

Youtube Mobile : Applicazione ufficiale per cellulari della famosa piattaforma video.

Mobitubia ed EmTube : Applicazioni non ufficiali per la visualizzazione e il salvataggio di video su Youtube, con funzionalità di player per file .flv. Nel mio caso le ho usate in modo alterno, preferendo Mobitubia per la visualizzazione e il salvataggio dei video, ed EmTube come player per i file .flv, che Mobitubia non riusciva a riprodurre. Ultimamente EmTube ha subito una evoluzione in Open Video Hub di cui potete leggere qui.

HandyWi : Buon gestore di reti Wi-Fi, utile nel caso in cui si utilizzino molte reti wireless.

ConectaFON : Programma della comunità FON, per l’ accesso semplificato ai propri hotspot Wi-Fi, con funzioni simili a quelle della precedente applicazione descritta, solo più personalizzata per FON. Presto sarà una delle mie applicazioni più utilizzate …

DivX Player : Player ufficiale per la riproduzione di DivX su cellulare. Questo programma non richiede connessione Internet.

Metronapoli : Programma di MetroNapoli, scaricabile mediante bluetooth dalle colonnine di informazione turistica presenti nelle stazioni gestite dall’ azienda, per accedere da cellulare, e quindi in modalità mobile, ai servizi di informazione erogati dalla colonnina stessa, riguardanti la Linea 1 e Linea 6 della Metropolitana di Napoli.

TvProgrammi : Guida Tv per cellulari.

Mobile Weather : Applicazione meteo supportata da Yahoo.

Questi sono i principali programmi che utilizzo. L’ unico costo è la connessione dati necessaria al loro funzionamento. Altri programmi si possono trovare sul web e includono funzioni come calcolo e verifica di codice fiscale, televideo e orari delle metropolitane di tutto il mondo e sono frutto del lavoro di singoli sviluppatori e quindi possono essere presenti sul web talvolta a pagamento e in tante varietà. Le istruzioni di installazione, gli aggiornamenti ed eventuali versioni precedenti possono essere trovate nei siti delle applicazioni e in siti specializzati.

Caiu hoje a primeira chuva do ano em Israel. É motivo de comemoração para um país onde não há chuva durante pelo menos nove meses do ano. Bom, tecnicamente não foi a primeiríssima, porque no ano novo judaico garoou. Mas mabul, ou “toró”, em português, foi o primeiro.

E eu, motoqueiro telavivense, que estava a caminho de uma palestra, tive que parar em um posto de gasolina para esperar o fim da chuva – e o solzão que veio logo depois! É que dirigir durante a primeira chuva pode ser arriscado – como durante muito tempo não chove, as ruas ficam molhadas e o óleo acumulado provoca derrapadas inevitáveis (e perigosas para quem anda sobre duas rodas).

Enquanto esperei, num cantinho coberto ao lado do posto, fumei um cigarro, depois outro, atualizei meu status no Facebook e aproveitei que tenho Fring no celular para chatear com amigos no MSN e no Skype. Viva a tecnologia nessas horas! E fiquei cantarolando Raindrops keep falling on my head, que dá o tom desse post.

A primeira chuva em Israel, pela importância do começo da “temporada molhada” tem até nome, iorê. E embora muita gente se irrite com os percalços e dores de cabeça da chuva, em geral ela é recebida com entusiasmo. Há regiões muito secas no país e água é uma das questões importantes no conflito com os países vizinhos, porque os recursos, repartidos, são escassos.

A “iorê” tem também um simbolismo especial no judaísmo, porque anuncia a chegada da estação mais fria e chuvosa na região. E me lembrei de uma coletânea de poemas, com o prefácio assinado pelo atual presidente israelense Shimon Peres, que leva o simpático nome After the First Rain: Israeli Poems on War and Peace.

A volte dopo una dura giornata, quando sono davanti al computer, mi ritorna in mente l’ epoca del 56 k, e di quanto tempo impiegavo per consultare qualche pagina …

Poi penso ad oggi, all’ antenna Hiperlan che mi permette di avere Internet a casa a Pimonte senza bisogno di chiavi (Wep/Wpa … per ora … FON incombe ), chiavette Internet e soprattutto della “cara” mamma Telecom … alle connessioni Wi-Fi che mi circondano qui a Napoli, tra casa e università (a proposito, studenti universitari della Federico II, per accedere alla Wi-Fi dell’ UniNa, dove disponibile, con un telefonino Symbian con Wi-Fi, come il mio E61i, cliccate qui, è una utile guida … per i portatili attenetevi alle informazioni riportate su questo sito, serve comunque una e-mail @studenti.unina.it, mentre per i possessori di telefonini Windows Mobile, c’è questa guida in pdf degli studenti di ingegneria informatica di Napoli) …

E poi penso a tutte le cose che faccio su Internet sia da fisso (quello che facciamo tutti : informazione, comunicazione, TV, , Blog, Social Network, intrattenimento … e altro …) sia da mobile (Fring e altre cose di cui farò presto una lista, che metterò in un articolo e di cui potete trovare anticipazioni nei link) e a quello che farò (FON in primis), e mi dico : “Uao, quante cose … ma tutte queste cose non saranno troppo dispersive ?”

Il casino nella mia stanza sembra confermarlo !

Pois é! O ótimo SymbianFreak noticiou a novidade: para comemorar o lançamento da nova OviStore, a Nokia e a Fring (desenvolvedora do soft de comunicação de mesmo nome) estão dando 3 N97 mini. The thing about uneventful weekends is when come Monday, and the day that is supposed to be exciting (ok, not exciting, but maybe hetic) turns out to be another insipid day, I wonder this is what my life has become. I don’t complain, because I am happy with the quiet moments I have to myself (although sometimes I suspect it is a little too many), and well, solitude is one of the most underrated things in life. Just read Anthony Storr’s book.

Trotted to school in the morning, with a Coke Zero in hand (they finally stocked the vending machine!), bummed around in school doing tons of readings and updating this year’s lesson plans, and random conversations with Kim. I thought I was behind in some administrative stuff, but checking with Shyam, he’s just as slow as me. Though I think I should stop using him as a gauge. But he’s cool.

Made it to the gym finally!

So perhaps it was another uneventful day, but there are small little things that makes a day ever more special.

Ben and Jerry’s Strawberry Cheesecake ice-cream. Absolutely decadent. Ok, I cheated, I had it last evening, but the memories of the cream lingering in my mouth…

Kronenbourg beer. I bet the Germans will scoff at this. But it reminds me of the good times I had with Gabriel et al. back in Paris in the winter of 2006. And I’m going back to Paris!

Farrer Road MRT Station. Not due till next year, but at least it’s moving. And at night, the inconveniences are forgiven.
