In case you missed the news, the FIDE World Cup is being played right now in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia. The event began on Nov. 20th and will run until December 15th. The World Cup is part of the qualifying cycle for the 2011 FIDE World Chess Championship.

I found it interesting that the World Cup has become a “knockout” event (in which a loss eliminates a player), rather than a traditional swiss system tournament. The format for this event is as follows: the first six rounds consist of two games contested between each pair of players with winners advancing to the next round. The seventh round consists of four games. The time control is ninety minutes for the first forty moves followed by a 30-minute “sudden death” period. The timers use the “Fischer increment” in which each player has thirty seconds added to his time after each move.

It’s easy to understand why the event uses the “knockout” format: players gain nothing by playing for a draw rather than for a win. The knockout format encourages players to go all-out in each game. In digging around through some databases, I discovered that the 1991 World Cup (the first World Cup I looked at) had actually ended in a tie between Anatoly Karpov and Vassily Ivanchuk (10.5 out of a possible 15 points). Their last round game was a draw, though, to the players’ credit, they did fight it out — the game lasted forty-five moves with a dead level position at the time the draw was agreed upon.

So far in the 2009 World Cup there have been a few upsets. When you take a look at the games from this event and compare players’ ratings, it’s important to note that the Elo rating system gets “stingier” with points the higher one advances in the ratings. For example a 1600-rated player beating an 1800-rated player in a club event is no big deal — it happens all the time. But at the grandmaster level, a 200 point rating differential is a whopping great gulf, more akin to an 1100-rated player whipping up on that 1800-rated player in a club event. That’s what makes this first round game so much fun, a game in which Yu Yangyi (rated 2527) schools 2718-rated Sergei Movsesian on how to play the White side of a Sicilian Defense:

The move b3-b4 locks in the dark-squared Bishop, but also sews up the King’s castled position.} axb3 27. cxb3 Nc5 28. Nd5?? {Another “wow” move. 28.Qe3 keeps things sewed up and is far less risky than the text move.} Bg5 29.b4 Ne6?? {And Black hands the game back to White! Why retreat the Knight? Either…Na4 or …Nb3 would keep the pressure on White’s King. Now White will wriggle free.} 30. Nb6! Rxa3 31. bxa3 Rc3 32. Qb2 Rd3 33. Nd5 Nd4 34. a4 {Some nice defensive play by White, and now neither side has any real advantage.} Qc4 35. Rc1 Qa6??  {Movsesian completely misses 35….Bxc1 to win back the Exchange…} 36. Rc3 {…and now it’s too late.} Rd2 37. Qa3 Ne2 38. Rc7 Rd3 39. b5 Qa5 40. Qxd3 Qxe1+ 41. Ka2 Qf2 42. Rc2 Nc1+ 43. Ka3 Qg1 {Black is down material and doesn’t want to swap pieces. Qxd3 {Playing Qc8+ guarantees a second Queen, but pretty much any reasonable White move ensures a win. Black is strictly on auto-pilot now.} Bc1+ 48. Rxc1 Qxd3+ 49. Die Fritz! Box 3170 als W-LAN Router am Kabel Deutschland Modem zu nutzen ist gar nicht so einfach wie ich selbst feststellen musste.

Kurz zur Vorgeschichte, weshalb ich mich überhaupt für Kabel Deutschland (KD) entschied. Ich arbeite ja schließlich bei The Phone House und wir vertreiben die Internetanschlüsse von T-Home, Vodafone DSL, 1und1, Alice, Versatel und O2-DSL. Leider war keiner dieser Anbieter wirklich an meiner neuen Adresse verfügbar, sodass ich leider auf KD zurückgreifen musste.

Nun aber zurück zum Thema. Wie kann man die Fritz! Box nun als W-LAN Router am KD-Modem nutzen?

Es scheint mir so, als würden alle Anbieter die Hardware künstlich mit einer angepassten Firmware beschneiden. Bei meinem vorherigen Anbieter Alice gab es einen sehr eingeschränkten SIEMENS Router, der nur als DSL-Modem fungierte. Beim Versuch diesen mit einer “normalen” Firmware zu bespielen, sodass man auch mehrere Rechner über W-LAN verbinden und die Box wirklich als Router nutzen kann, habe ich die Kiste leider abgeschossen. Verbindung während dem Firmware-Update getrennt. Autsch! Daraufhin habe ich mir die Fritz! Box 3170 aus unserem Shop gekauft.

Da ich die Fritz! Box noch habe, verzichtete ich bei der Bestellung von KD auf einen neuen Router, da dieser kostenpflichtig war. Als unser Anschluss dann endlich geschaltet wurde -hierzu später noch mehr- wollte ich natürlich sofort alles einrichten.

Pa! Denkste! … Verbindung zwischen Laptop und Modem per LAN war kein Problem, aber die Fritz! Box 3170 konnte man nicht als Router verwenden. Nach über einer Stunde recherchieren im Netz bin ich dann auf einen rettenden Thread gestoßen. Da dieser so schwer zu finden war, dass ich ihn jetzt schon wieder nicht ausfindig machen kann, möchte ich Ihnen die Lösung nicht vorenthalten. Die Fritz! Box 3170 ist nämlich ebenfalls eine von AVM künstlich beschnittene Kiste nur um die Produktpalette zu erweitern. Überall im Netz findet man Aussagen, dass man die 3170 nicht als W-LAN Router am KD-Modem nutzen kann. Es geht doch!

Mit folgendem Trick funktioniert es:

1. Sie müssen in der http://fritz.box unter => Einstellungen => System => Ansicht => die Expertenansicht aktivieren und die Einstellungen übernehmen
2. Schließen Sie den Browser bzw. den Reiter des Konfigurationsmenüs der Fritz! Box
3. Öffnen Sie den Firefox Browser
4. Aktivieren Sie unter => Ansicht => Webseiten Stil => Kein Stil
5. Gehen Sie erneut in das Konfigurationsmenü der Fritz! Box (keine Angst wenn es jetzt etwas “chaotisch” ausschaut. Hierdurch kommen die versteckten Funktionen zum Vorschein welche wir für unser vorhaben benötigen.)
6. Folgen Sie => Einstellungen => System => Internet und
7. wählen bzw. aktivieren den Punkt Internetzugang über LAN 1 / WAN
8. Weiterhin sollten folgende Punkte aktiviert sein:
   - Internetverbindung selbst aufbauen (NAT-Router mit PPPoE oder IP)
   - Zugangsdaten werden nicht benötigt (IP)
   - IP-Adresse automatisch über DHCP beziehen (DHCP-Hostname: fritz.box
   - Geschwindigkeiten des DSL-Anschlusses automatisch einstellen
9. Übernehmen Sie die Einstellungen.
10. Verbinden Sie das KD-Modem mittels mitgeliefertem Netzwerkkabel mit der LAN 1 Buchse Ihrer Fritz! Box.

Gegebenfalls müssen Sie das KD-Modem und Ihre Fitz! Box neu starten. Achten Sie darauf, dass Sie in Ihren Netzwerkeinstellungen bei den Drahtlosnetzwerken Ihre IP-Adresse automatisch beziehen.

Fertig! Durch diesen Tipp haben Sie sich den Neukauf einer angeblich höherwertigeren Fritz! Box gespart.

Allerdings weise ich ausdrücklich daraufhin, dass diese Funktion standardmäßig von AVM so nicht vorgesehen ist. Für eventuell entstehende Schäden oder mögliche Sicherheitslücken bin ich nicht haftbar. Sie folgen dieser Anleitung ausdrücklich auf eigener Gefahr und übernehmen das volle Risiko. Ferner sollten Sie diese Anleitung nur befolgen, wenn Sie kein vollkommener PC-Neuling sind und Sie sich zutrauen die Konfiguration vorzunehmen. Ansonsten fragen Sie lieber den PC-Experten Ihres Vertrauens…

Let me preface this by stating that we are three grown men. Sitting around, watching a love story. About a man dying from cancer young. It was terribly tragic and sad. So we got to talking about families, and I decided I wanted to find out about some of the history of my family’s past. I’d heard some fun stories and I decided to use the new tool of the internet to see if they were true.

The first is about my great-uncle: a Mr. Fritz Weinschenk. The story goes as follows — after being born in Germany the family escapes from the Nazi’s in the 1930’s. He goes on to fight in WWII and made it into Life Magazine! He had a special talent that he was able to seal himself INSIDE his own dufflebag. Well, such an amazing skill couldn’t help but make it into Time Mag. It has been family legend for years, but the article in question had been lost to the sands of time.

Enter the internet. Google is doing this cool thang where they archive all the old publications they can get their hands on. One perk of this is that they have some great software that automatically transcribes the print on the page from bits to meaningful letters and text. This means that time Mag is now searchable. So I pulled up my handy google books search engine, and typed in fritz weinschenk, and guess what?

There is my great uncle staring back at me! I must say, I was quite impressed. It was very cool to be able to dig up a relic of the past. He of course fought in WWII, and in fact was a feature charictor in a documentary about Jews in WWII. The website for the documentary has a nice little snippet about him.

He moved from Mainz, Germany in… I think it was 1935. Anyways, thats just some interesting family history. I’ve always wanted to visit Germany, and now I think I’ll have to take a visit to Mainz when I go.

I wish I knew a bit more about my mom’s side of the family. Her maiden name is a bit more common so its harder to search for her side. Also, both her parents died when she was younger, so I never met them, and there is just a lack of “family stories” simply because there aren’t many people around to tell them. My grandfather (from who I believe I take my middle name — Miles) I believe (if I remember correctly) also fought in the war as a medic. Invasion of France, and all that fun stuff.

Anyways, I just think its cute.

Durch freundlichste Kontaktaufnahme der Anwaltskanzlei F…. K…… habe ich mich dazu entschlossen den Beitrag vorerst nicht mehr publik zu machen.

Fritz hangs out with the smaller dogs, but the only thing small about him is his size!  Fritz really thinks he is a big dog and it is not uncommon to see him playing with the big guys.

Friday we had some work going on for our new room, and Fritz along with many of the small guys loved watching what was going on.  It almost seemed like the construction guys we a halftime show for the dogs.
