Okay, denne posten kommer ikke til å kritisere media i første omgang, men er en reaksjon til en sak på VG.

Fremskrittspartiet er stort sett meget gode på å følge samfunnstrender, slå politisk mynt på fæle saker, og tøtsje noe i det norske folks mørkeste følelsesmessige avgrunner, for så å menneskeliggjøre disse fordommene ved å sette ekte navn og ekte bilder av seg selv ved siden av meningene sine. Og her er media svært gode på å følge opp og gjøre FrP til et “folkelig” parti, som liksom taler det norske folks egentlige meninger.

Og det er skremmende hva man klarer å mene seriøst. Flere eksempler følger: Fremskrittspartiet ville henge opp døde griser på Torgalmmenningen i Bergen for å skremme muslimene. De ville plassere asylmottak “ett eller annet sted i Afrika. De vil kutte så og si alt av støtte til kulturnorge “for hvis ikke en kunstner kan leve av sin egen kunst, da er han ikke god nok kunstner”. Hva med støtte til bandverksted for ungdom? Hva med kulturskoler?

Og nå, det siste glimrende utspillet er å kastrere pedofile for å gi dem minsket seksuell lyst. Det er, etter min mening, et så useriøst utspill at det knapt fortjener dekning i aviser. Dog, det hadde vært et poeng om det gjorde at folk ble klar over hvor lite respekt partiet viser ovenfor medmennesker, men når det skaper hyllester til utspillet, da begynner jeg å bli bekymret (se enkelte blogger det er linket til under VG-saken).

Men hva skal man gjøre for å få bukt med det pedofile problemet? Jeg er tidvis enig med Tor Erling Staff, og jeg vil ta til orde for at pedofili bør gjøres menneskelig. For at man skal komme noen vei med pedofili er det nødt til å utvikle seg til et tema som gir mennesker andre assosiasjoner enn “monstre” og “uhyrer”. Det er klart at det tabubelagte området pedofili ofte er med på å gjøre de pedofile handlingene verre enn de egentlig hadde behøvd å være, som for eksempel med Fritzl-saken. Hadde pedofili vært bredt debattert og hadde alle hatt en forståelse for at noen mennesker er pedofile, så hadde muligens ikke jenta havnet i kjelleren i så mange år.

Hovedpoenget er at pedofili, som med alle andre lidelser, bør forsøkes kurert ved hjelp av andre metoder enn noe så primitivt som tvangskastrering. Og da er løsningen nærmere enn man tror; diskuter, forstå, aksepter og hjelp.

Tenk så mange mulige mord, voldtekter, voldsepisoder og andre ting som har blitt forhindret etter at mentale lidelser ble mer vanlig å prate om, både med hverandre, og med psykologer og psykiatere. Med aksept for pedofili kan man gjennom samtaler komme et steg videre på veien til å kunne tilnærme seg problemet på en seriøs måte.

(Dog, problemet er vel at med såpass mange forutinntatte FrP-velgere, i landet, så blir det vanskelig å gi en allmenn forståelse av at det er et faktisk problem, og at ethvert eksisterende problem bør løses på en human måte.)

Brukar undra lite då och då vad min gamla vän Fritzl har för sig nuförtiden. Kom nämligen att tänka på honom när vi var ute och gjorde en skoluppgift i ett bostadsområden häromdagen. Såg ut som en av vägarna hette Josef Fritzels väg, tyckte jag vara ganska festligt och skrattade överdrivet mycket åt.
Men det är väl så det brukar vara, stora män får områden och gator uppkallade efter sig – inte mer än rätt…

Well I am sure the first question that is on everyone’s lips is; “Where have you been Señor FilmWipe?” Well this is a fine question that is on everybody’s lips.  Unfortunately for you the fans I have been ill the last week and was unable to fulfil my duties as the UK’s number one film critic.  Or failing that the UK’s number 3567 film reviewer.  It depends on who you ask and whether I bribed them in advance.  Anyway, I am back (ish) it depends on whether my new found limited health will give me the opportunity to continue to provide you with reviews that will rival luminaries in the field such as Mark Kermode or at least say the things that they are too scared to say.  It is worth pointing out at this point I am not dying of a series disease, and despite various rumours on twitter I do not have leprosy it is simply a severe bout of flew. Anyway, today’s review is of Nicolas Winding Refn’s latest release Bronson and is another fine example of how one of Europe’s up and coming directors is carving a niche for himself in a crowded cinematic market.

If you do not know who Charles Bronson is, he is Britain’s most expensive criminal (this is due to all the damage he has caused while in prison).  The film follows  Michael Peterson – a slightly deranged youth –  who commits a robbery on a post office and is sentenced to seven years in prison.  However, after realising his limitations he seizes his time in prison as an opportunity to become infamous.  This leads to him develop an alter ego as Charles Bronson committing a number of violent crimes while inside that draw him to the public’s attention and result in him serving over 30 years in solitary confinement at her Majesty’s pleasure.

Refn takes the character of Bronson on a fascinating journey.  He decides to create these surreal scenes where Bronson is performing for a public on a stage.  He regularly is dressed as magician or as a mime artist/clown.  It is a delightful visual metaphor for Bronson’s repressed desires of how he would like to be and what he actually is.  What is brilliant about these scenes is the fact that you see the disintegration of any form of mental stability to the point that he loses any semblance of sense or reason.  By the end of the film you feel as if he has lost all control but has some how managed to find a balance between his artistic and violent sides.

It is very difficult to give an opinion of Tom Hardy’s performance.  There is no question that he creates a disturbingly wonderful character.  However, by trying to make him as real as possible (What I mean by this is the characters simpler side) at times you feel as if there is the odd moment of nonchalant acting.  This may be slightly unfair as it is a great performance and he does create what is arguably the ultimate cinematic anti hero.  It is quite an experience to watch a character who is so easily dislikeable for an hour and a half and yet actually care about what happens in the end.

Readers of my thrilling review of Refn’s Bleeder will know that I am a massive fan of his work even if it doesn’t quite hit the spot.  This is probably the best biopic (if you can call it that) I have seen since The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and is on a par with this wonderful French gem.  I will freely admit that his film doesn’t quite hit the highs of the Pusher series, although in all honesty very little does.  But it is still a development of such and is a man who is close to perfecting his style.  I would hazard a guess that within the next couple of  films he will probably become Europe’s most sort after directors.

Overall this is a good film that marks a landmark in the development of one of Europe’s brightest talents.

7/10 – Good but not brilliant

 This article applies to residential (and hospital) care settings in England & Wales.

So far in this series we have established that people in receipt of health and social care have the same basic rights as everyone else so long as there is no legal mechanism to remove those rights from them. We further established that those basic rights include the right to make their own choices and to take risks. After all, quality of life depends upon taking risks to some degree – even if that risk is no more than crossing the road.

Further we have identified that there are two types of risk – organisational risk that care providers must manage and individual risk that may well be none of our business. Individual risk only becomes organisational risk if it affects others for whom the organisation has a duty of care or if the individual lacks the capacity to understand the risk they are taking.

If the person lacks capacity to decide then care providers can restrict their liberty under the Mental Capacity Act so long as the restriction is both proportionate and in that person’s best interests. However they cannot deprive a person of their liberty without external authorisation. This third article in the series considers the difference between restriction and deprivation of liberty and how to go about getting authorisation to deprive should it be necessary.

Liberty means freedom – it means rights. All rights represent the freedom to do something or the freedom from something. All our choices are freedoms and they are not to be trifled with unless there’s very good reason.

Let’s examine the difference between restriction and deprivation of liberty. According to the European court of Human rights:

“The difference between restriction and deprivation of liberty is one of intensity or degree and not one of nature or substance.”

To put it another way:

“It aint what you do – it’s the way that you do it.”

An emergency response to a wandering resident with dementia may be to pull him physically from the path of a speeding car.

A resident with a urinary tract infection causing toxic confusion may need to be restrained to prevent her from injuring herself or someone else.

An autistic resident who bangs his head repeatedly against the wall may require immediate physical restraint to prevent head injury.

All of the above examples are likely to constitute restrictions of liberty because they are emergency responses and not long term policy. The common law doctrine of necessity recognises that sometimes workers are caught between a rock and a hard place – they have only two options and they don’t really like either.

The law accepts that in such situations the best we can manage is the lesser of two evils – restraint is usually better than injury so the common law doctrine of necessity allows us to act. Berar in mind though that common law works best in emergency. It is not nearly so reliable when the restraint is carried out as part of a longer term policy. That is because policy is more likely to represent deprivation of liberty and not unplanned emergency restrictions under common law.

For example:

George is 87 years old and lives in residential care. He has physical difficulties but appeared mentally ‘sound’ until now.

It is 3am in November. The temperature outside is well below freezing when George appears wearing only his underwear and slippers. He is making his way to the front door and clearly intends to leave.

The night staff ask him where he is going and he replies the post office to buy stamps. The night staff try to persuade him to wait until the day time when the post office will be open. They also suggest that he is not suitably dressed but George does not appear to understand. He attempts to force his way out of the building and the night staff physically prevent him from leaving.

This is an unexpected emergency response. It is a restriction of liberty – not a deprivation. The reason for this is that there is no intention (at least not yet) to deprive George of his liberty in the long term. It is simply a proportionate response in George’s best interests to restrict his liberty because it is reasonable to assume that he would come to harm should he be left to wander in those conditions.

If in the morning George has regained his understanding (his capacity) and wants to go to the Post Office fully dressed and in a rational state of mind then he will do so. There is no need for further restriction and so no need for further authorisation.

If however it became necessary to keep George from going outside for longer than that it would be necessary to seek further authorisation under the new Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) which came into effect on April 1^st 2009.

Some people believe that the new DoLS procedures represent a new crime but nothing could be further from the truth. In fact they are a way to make deprivation of liberty lawful for people in hospitals and care homes without the need to seek a court order or detention under the Mental Health Act. DoLS makes your job easier. Let’s look at the situation DoLS seeks to change.

It has been unlawful to deprive people of their liberty throughout Europe without legal authorisation for years. This is why Josef Fritzl was prosecuted for locking his daughter Elisabeth in a cellar for 24 years:

It is also why the Bournewood ‘admission’ that prompted the government to create the Mental Capacity Act 2005 was unlawful:

Both of these cases were against articles 5 (the right to liberty) and article 8 (the right to respect for private and family life) of the European Convention on Human Rights ECHR. The convention demands that all member states create laws preventing such human rights breaches and the UK is no exception.

Article 5 (the right to liberty) effectively says that there should be no deprivation of liberty without legal process including the right to a fair hearing and to speedy appeals processes. This means that it is unlawful to deprive a person of liberty without recourse to a court.

For decades the culture in care homes has been that people are routinely denied their right to liberty by workers with no legal training, no real understanding of Human Rights legislation and no authority to replace the courts. This has been illegal and has left care workers open to criminal prosecution.

The Bournewood judgement made it clear that this practice had to stop. Residents’ rights had to be respected or their would be legal consequences for care workers who wrongfully deprived them of their freedom.

So the government created the deprivation of Liberty safeguards (DoLS) in order to help residential care providers obtain legal authorisation without the need for lengthy court processes. In effect DoLS does you a favour. It gives you a way to do what you need to do to fulfil your duty of care without having to appear before a judge and without fear of prosecution.

The process is very straightforward and is designed to help you to stay within the law.

The authorisation comes from the local supervisory body (either the local authority or the local PCT) and depends upon 6 assessments. These are:

1. Age requirement
2. Capacity requirement
3. No refusals requirement
4. Mental health requirement
5. Eligibility requirement
6. Best interests requirement

In the next article in this series we’ll look at the DoLS process itself, how it works, why the 6 requirements are there, who completes the assessments and what happens once the authorisation is granted.

We’ll also talk about what will happen if the authorisation is not granted.

Urgh I am feeling a sudden wave of illness through my body.
My heel is hurting like fuck and I could hardly walk all day…My nose has been running and my throat is filled with mucus.

My dad is leaving tomorrow morning for Japan.
He is first stopping in Moscow, Russia to change flights and then going to Tokyo aeroporto.
He told me when he is away, I may stay in his flat as long as I want, plus he wants me to eat up his freezer full of yummy food!
Steaks, chicken, sausages…you name it!
- I am going to invite my friends over for dinners, that´ll be nice.

I also want to invite a certain someone, but we´ll see how that goes.

Tomorrow I have 2 tests, however I am unsure how well I will perform…
The first one is a test on Film History, I have hardly studied at all because of all my film projects, but from what I hear, the test isnt that hard at all.

The second test is a debate between me and a classmate; about whether the Death Sentence is morally/ethically correct or not.
I am pro death penalty, both in the debate and IRL.
I just believe certain people who commit such horrid crimes should be gotten rid of once and for all, no prison sentence could ever repair any such damage, death is the least.

Like for example, I read in the paper today about a 40-something year old man who had been selling young teenage girls as prostitutes.
All of which were under 18 old.
Now, as I have clearly made my point against any form of sexual crime, I woul sentence this man to death.
Comparable to the Fritzl case, I would also have not even put a monster like that on trial, he had lived long enough anyways, I would have had him executed on spot, with 100 bullets through the face!

If a person does such horrible damage to an individual, a group of people , a community or whatever; why take the risk and keep this person alive, people like this always manage to get out somehow or influence others to similar deeds.
Just end their lives, so our can prosper.

I feel like I am being pulled between different extremes right now, I cannot decide which way to go.
-What is right and what is wrong?
-Who should I choose?
In one hand it is a force closest to me, but I am uncertain what motives lie behind and how easily they can be revealed, along with how much responsibility I must take to attain my goals with this ‘person’.
In the other hand, the option is not that unclear, but under certain circumstances cannot be reached ATM, however with this I am most certain about certain things :p
But if things play out the way I want, option 2 might just bare fruit.

What to do…bother bother bother…

Neulich wurde ich unverhofft Opfer eines Verbalangriffs zweier angeheiterter Esoterikliebhaberinnen. Und neulich wieder. Das Feld für diese Attacken auf mein Ego wird meist mit den unschuldig dahin gesäuselten Worten: „Welsche Stärnzeichen bist du?“ bereitet. Voller Hoffnung auf potentielle sexuelle Abenteuer antwortete ich beim ersten Mal wahrheitsgemäß und hauchte zwischen Bierfahne und Restrauch zärtlich: „Zwilling!“ Bei diesem ersten Mal – und erste Male sind ja bekanntlich oft traumatische Erlebnisse – lernte ich schmerzhaft, dass ich mich in diesem Fall durch die Wahrheit lediglich als Bodensatz der Gesellschaft, sozusagen als astrologischen Giftmüll, oute. Wie mir mit einem Augenrollen erklärt wurde, sind Zwillinge nämlich durch die Bank weg soziopathische Unmenschen, die sich auf nichts konzentrieren können, aber an allem interessiert sind – janusköpfig, schwer zu ertragen und etwas beängstigend. Ich war mir schon sicher endlich die endgültige Erklärung für meinen permanenten psychischen Ausnahmezustand gefunden zu haben und prostete erfreut meinem Tischnachbarn zu.

Allerdings fiel mir schnell auf, dass mein Gegenüber mindestens genauso dauerhaft verwirrt und nun ja…unangenehm ist, wie ich, aber in einem vollkommen anderen Monat geboren wurde, also kein bisschen Zwilling ist. Wie konnte das sein, fragte ich mich? Vielleicht war die Theorie doch löchriger, als ich im ersten Moment vermutete – war die Realität etwa doch wieder komplexer, als mir das Miss Cleo weismachen wollte?! Bei genauerem Nachdenken fielen mir dann gewisse ideologische Parallelen zu bereits (zumindest größtenteils) überwundenen Denkkonstrukten auf. Einer Gruppe Menschen werden, scheinbar zufällig, gewisse Eigenschaften zugeschrieben, man unterteilt sie von Geburt an in gut bzw. schlecht. Herrenrasse auf der einen, genetischer Abschaum auf der anderen Seite. Zeig mir deine Kopfform und ich sage dir, welches Sternzeichen du hast. Mein Versuch die Sache analytischer anzugehen wurde geschickt gekontert – es sei typisch für Zwillinge alles zu analysieren. Auf die nächste Attacke war ich dann allerdings besser vorbereitet.

Als mich erneut ein weibliches Trio von Astrofaschisten nach meinem Sternzeichen fragte, sagte ich gleich: Det schlimmste wo jibt! Sie identifizierten mich daraufhin schnell als Zwilling. Allerdings hatte ich nach akribischer Recherche diesmal ein paar Asse im Ärmel und ließ mir von allen Damen die Geburtsdaten geben. Ach, du bist also Widder vom Sternzeichen – dann befindest du dich in guter Gesellschaft solch illustrer Persönlichkeiten, wie Hitler oder Josef Fritzl. Schütze? Ganz klare Ähnlichkeiten mit Stalin… vielleicht ein Schuss Armin Meiwes mit drin. Fische? Klare charakterliche Parallelen zu Osama Bin Laden!

Und welches Sternzeichen hast du?

An Australian newspaper yesterday published the names and details of the father and daughter involved in the Victorian incest scandal.

The Australian newspaper was told it breached suppression orders by the courts and quickly removed the details. The publishing of these details in this publication led to other media outlets using the suppressed information, causing more potential legal problems if the breach is followed up.

This is in some ways similar to the Obama-Kanye incident in my previous post, where the information was spread quickly by people unaware it was off the record.

In this latest case, the man media have dubbed the “Australian Fritzl” fathered four children with his daughter, with DNA tests confirming this.

It has been revealed that authorities were aware of this case, spanning for 30 years beginning when the daughter was 11 years old, which has caused many members of the Australian Govt to call for the sacking of Lisa Neville, the Victorian community services minister.

Ms Neville, the Minister for Community Services, faced calls to step down in Parliament yesterday after it was revealed her department had failed to perform proper police checks and allowed children to live with known sex offenders.

In NZ any victim of a sex crime has automatic suppression applied to their name and any other identifying details, including those of the offender.

Assuming Australia is the same, following traditional Commonwealth law, then any news outlet that published/broadcast this information, even if they were following another, would be in breach of this suppression and this may be considered contempt of court.

Although unfair on the victims (in this case the daughter, her children, and other family members as well) is it fair to withhold information about such an horrific offender?  Does the public have a right to know and protect their communities, or does this just lead to situations like this (another big news story in Australia at the moment).

El caso de Josef Fritzl, el electricista retirado austriaco que ha mantenido encerrados en un sótano durante 24 años a su hija y a tres hijos que tuvo con ella, ha conmocionado a la opinión pública mundial. Éstas son las 50 claves de lo ocurrido, agrupadas de la A a la Z.

1. AGOSTO DE 1984. Josef Fritzl, un electricista austriaco de 50 años, encierra a su hija Elisabeth, de 18, en el sótano de su casa, en Amstetten, Austria.

2. AMSTETTEN. Localidad austriaca situada al noreste del país, en la Baja Austria, con unos 22.600 habitantes de lengua alemana. Lugar de nacimiento de Josef Fritzl, hace 73 años. En una gasolinera cercana, en la autopista de Viena a Salzburgo, estuvo trabajando Elisabeth a principios de los años 80.

3. ABRIL DE 2008. Kristen, una chica de 19 años, es trasladada al hospital con síntomas de estar gravemente enferma. Es una de las hijas de Elisabeth, que tiene ahora 42 años. Kristen está inconsciente, pero tiene consigo una nota de su madre en la que pide ayuda para la joven. Los médicos buscan sin éxito el historial de la paciente. Avisan a la Policía y la historia sale a la luz: Josef Fritzl ha mantenido encerrada a Elisabeth durante 24 años y ha tenido siete hijos con ella. Tres de ellos (la propia Kerstin; Stephan, de 18 años, y Felix, de 5) han compartido cautiverio con la madre, otro murió, y los tres restantes (Lisa, de 15 años; Monika, de 14, y Alexander, de 13) vivían con Josef y su mujer, Rosemarie (la madre de Elisabeth), en la parte de arriba de la propia casa. Rosemarie asegura que no sabía nada.

4. ARRESTO. El pasado 27 de abril, la Policía anuncia la detención de Fritzl, acusado de retención ilegal y abusos sexuales. Poco antes, Josef ha liberado a su hija y a sus hijos-nietos. El detenido lo confiesa todo. Después, decide guardar silencio hasta que se celebre el juicio.

5. ADN. Dos días después, la Policía confirma que las pruebas de ADN realizadas a Fritzl confirman que es el padre de los hijos de Elisabeth.

6. ABUSOS. Elisabeth sufrió los primeros abusos sexuales de su padre en 1977, cuando tenía once años. Desde entonces fue violada y golpeada sistemáticamente. Pasó los nueve primeros años de su encierro en una única estancia del sótano (hasta 1993 su padre no organizó otros espacios). Los hijos nacidos en ese tiempo fueron testigos de las violaciones continuas. Fritzl la mantuvo esposada los dos primeros días de cautiverio, y durante los seis o nueve meses siguientes permaneció atada. La Policía descarta que Josef Fritzl hubiera abusado de sus hijos.

7. ANTECEDENTES. Fritzl fue encarcelado durante 18 meses en 1967 por abusar sexualmente de una joven en Linz (Austria). También fue detenido posteriormente por intento de violación y por exhibicionismo. Además, la Policía investiga su relación con el asesinato, aún sin resolver, de una mujer, Martina Posch, hace 22 años.

8. BÚSQUEDA. Cuando Elisabeth fue encerrada en 1984 su madre denunció su desaparición, pero, al ser mayor de edad, la Policía pensó que había abandonado el hogar por propia voluntad y dejó de buscarla. De hecho, Elisabeth fue encerrada por su padre tras volver a su casa después de un primer intento de fuga.

9. BEBÉS. Los tres hijos que vivían con Josef y Rosemarie fueron dejados en la puerta de la casa poco después de nacer (en 1993, 1994 y 1997). Fueron adoptados legalmente por sus abuelos.

10. CARTAS. Fritzl obligaba a su hija a escribir cartas para mantener el secreto a salvo, especialmente de las posibles sospechas de Rosemarie. En la primera, de 1984, Elisabeth decía que se iba de casa y que no la buscasen. Los tres niños que fueron apareciendo en la puerta de la casa posteriormente iban acompañados de sendas cartas de Elisabeth en las que aseguraba que no podía cuidarlos.

11. CUÑADA. Christine R., cuñada de Fritzl y hermana de Rosemarie, asegura que éste siempre humilló a su hermana y maltrató a sus hijos. Señaló asimismo que Josef bajaba al sótano todas las mañanas, “supuestamente para dibujar planos de unas máquinas que quería vender”. “A veces pasaba toda la noche allí. Ahora ya sabemos por qué”, añadió.

12. CALABOZO. El calabozo construido en el sótano de su casa por Fritzl tiene unos 80 metros cuadrados, y se extendía bajo el jardín de la casa. Se accedía mediante una puerta corredera de hormigón de 300 kilos de peso, escondida tras una estantería. Había una escalera de entrada, un lavadero, dos dormitorios de 3 metros cuadrados y una pequeña cocina junto a un baño. Algunas partes del zulo no tenían más de 1,70 metros de altura. La ventilación venía de un tubo.

13. CÓDIGO. La puerta del sótano sólo podía abrirse mediante un código secreto conocido únicamente por Fritzl. El código accionaba un motor electrónico. Fritzl había activado un mecanismo para que la puerta se abriese sola en caso de que él desapareciese.

14. CONSTRUCCIÓN. Fritzl planeó y construyó el calabozo un año antes de encerrar allí a su hija, y tras pedir autorización para reformar el edificio. Los planos fueron aprobados, pero no incluían las habitaciones del sótano.

15. COMIDA. Josef se encargaba de abastecer de comida y ropa a los encerrados. Cuando se iba de viaje les dejaba alimentos de reserva.

16. CIEN. La Policía pretende interrogar al centenar de personas que pasaron por la casa durante estos 24 años (Fritzl alquilaba habitaciones en la parte de arriba). La investigación podría alargarse durante al menos dos meses. Los investigadores sólo pueden trabajar en el zulo durante media hora seguida debido a la falta de oxígeno.

17. CONDENA. Fritzl, en prisión preventiva, se enfrenta una posible condena de al menos 15 años de cárcel si es encontrado culpable del cargo de violación, el más grave de sus presuntos delitos, según la ley austriaca.

18. CÓMPLICES. Las pruebas analizadas hasta ahora descartan que ningún miembro de la familia actuase como cómplice. Pese a que la Policía ha insistido en que Fritzl actuó solo, el jefe de la investigación declaró que “alguien de la familia debía saber algo”. En este sentido, la revista alemana Brigitte aseguró que uno de los hijos que vivían en la parte alta de la casa tenía una copia de la llave que daba al sótano. Alfred Dubanovsky, un hombre que estuvo 12 años alquilando una habitación en la casa de Fritzl, aseguró que vio cómo otro hombre entraba junto a su casero en el sótano. Añadió que este hombre era un fontanero, y que le llamó la atención porque él tenía prohibido intentar entrar en esa parte de la casa.

19. DROGAS. Fritzl dijo a la Policía que había encerrado a su hija para “protegerla y mantenerla alejada de las drogas”.

20. DAÑOS. Encerrados sin luz natural y aislados del mundo durante toda su vida, los hijos de Fritzl han desarrollado diversas fobias y miedos. Sienten pánico ante el color azul, los tonos de los móviles, el tráfico en la ciudad… Además, hablan con gruñidos (se comunican entre ellos con un lenguaje propio) y prefieren gatear. El pequeño, de cinco años, es “alegre y vital”, y se mostró fascinado al sentarse por primera vez en un coche. Los dos mayores necesitarán al menos ocho años de terapia. Los expertos han aconsejado que, por el momento, vivan en una casa sin ventanas. Los tres, al igual que su madre, tienen problemas de piel. Kristen ha perdido casi todos los dientes.

21. DESMAYO. Kristen fue trasladada al hospital tras sufrir un desmayo, consecuencia de la enfermedad que padece. Según algunas fuentes, su dolencia es típica de los males que puede acarrear tener hijos en una relación incestuosa. Otros medios apuntan a una infección.

22. ENVEJECIMIENTO. Elisabeth aparenta 20 años más de los que tiene. Tiene el pelo muy blanco y la piel casi transparente debido a la falta de luz solar.

23. FOTOS. Pese a que sí se han divulgado fotografías tanto de Josef Fritzl como de Elisabeth, las autoridades austriacas han advertido de que cualquier medio que publique imágenes o detalles íntimos de las víctimas podría ser multado con hasta 20.000 euros. Las autoridades estudian la posibilidad de cambiar el apellido a las víctimas para protegerlas.

24. GAS. La Policía investiga si Fritzl construyó un dispositivo para que el zulo se llenara de gas en caso de que a él le pasara algo. Amenazaba a los encerrados con gasear el calabozo en caso de que intentaran liberarse, lo que podría explicar, en parte, por qué Elisabeth no habría intentado nunca atacarle.

25. HIJOS. Elisabeth tuvo sus siete hijos a lo largo de 14 años. Las condiciones en las que tenían lugar los partos están siendo investigadas aún. La primera, Kristen, nació en 1988, y en 1990 nació Stephan. Lisa y Monika ‘aparecieron’ en la puerta de la casa cuando tenían nueve y diez meses de edad. En 1996 nacieron gemelos. Uno de ellos murió a los tres días y el otro, Alexander, ‘apareció’ también 15 meses después en la puerta del domicilio. El último, Felix, nació en 2003. Según la Policía, Fritzl escogió a los hijos a los que adoptó por su estado de salud y su “inclinación a llorar”.

26. INCINERADO. Según declaró Elisabeth, el cadáver del gemelo muerto fue incinerado por Josef en el jardín.

27. IMPACTO SOCIAL. El caso de Josef Fritzl ha conmocionado tanto a la localidad de Amstetten, asediada estos días por cientos de periodistas, como a toda la sociedad austriaca, especialmente al haberse producido apenas dos años después de que se conociera el caso de Natascha Kampusch, la joven que permaneció secuestrada cerca de Viena durante ocho años. Algunos medios locales han cuestionado también un tipo de sociedad en la que pueden darse casos como éste: “Todo Amstetten debería avergonzarse. Los vecinos cerraron los ojos” (Osterreich), “La comunidad entera debe preguntarse qué es lo que está pasando” (Der Standard). Unas 200 personas se congregaron en la plaza principal de Amstetten llevando velas para expresar su “ira” y “profunda tristeza” por lo ocurrido. “Todos los días pasaba por delante de la casa; tenía que haber hecho algo”, comentó uno de los asistentes.

28. IGNORANCIA. Elisabeth ha exculpado a su madre de su cautiverio y de los abusos que sufrió, asegurando que ella no sabía nada. “Nunca tuvo nada que ver”, señaló.

JUEZ. “Todos los procedimientos eran contundentes, las piezas coincidían”, declaró el juez Josef Schluegl, quien concedió en su día a Fritzl la custodia de uno de los niños, sin saber que era en realidad su hijo, tras leer una carta en la que Elisabeth pedía a sus padres que cuidaran del pequeño y que no intentaran buscarla. “Imposible imaginar que estaba secuestrada y le habían obligado a escribirla”, añadió.

30. KAMPUSCH, NATASCHA. La joven austriaca de 20 años Natascha Kampusch, que reapareció en 2006 tras permanecer ocho años secuestrada, anunció la donación de 25.000 euros para las víctimas de Fritzl. También hizo un llamamiento internacional para recolectar dinero para la familia.

31. LINCHAMIENTO. Fritzl ha sido aislado en el Centro Penitenciario de Sankt Pölten ante el peligro de que otros presos puedan lincharlo. “Los asesinos y violadores de menores son vistos como la escala más baja y deplorable, por lo que suelen sufrir ataques extremos”, manifestó Günter Mörwald, director de la cárcel.

32. MONSTRUO. La mayoría de la prensa española ha apodado a Josef Fritzl como “El monstruo de Amstetten”. El diario francés Le Figaro habla de “el padre de las tinieblas”.

33. MAYER, RUDOLPH. Es el abogado de Fritzl. Letrado famoso en Austria, aseguró a Der Spiegel que su trabajo será “mostrar a Josef Fritzl como un ser humano” tras haber sido presentado como “un horrible monstruo y un tirano sexual”. “Cuando le vi por primera vez me pareció un patriarca con lados buenos y malos, roto, muy afectado emocionalmente”, manifestó.

34. NAZIS. La clínica donde se recuperan Elisabeth y sus hijos, en la localidad de Mauer, tiene también su propio pasado oscuro. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, cientos de personas murieron aquí víctimas de prácticas de eutanasia llevadas a cabo por los nazis, entre 1941 y 1944.

35. OTROS CASOS. Lo descubierto en Amstetten ha traído a la memoria otros sucesos semejantes, aparte del mencionado de Natascha Kampusch. Lydia Gouardo, una francesa de 45 años que dijo haber sido violada y torturada durante 28 años por su padre, con quien tuvo seis hijos entre 1982 y 1993, ha mostrado su deseo de conocer a Elisabeth. Por otra parte, la policía austriaca reabrirá el caso de 64 menores desaparecidos en el país, cinco de los cuales faltan de sus casas desde hace más de 10 años.

36. POSCH, MARTINA. Fue asesinada hace 22 años, cuando tenía 17. Su cadáver apareció en el lago Mondsee y, hasta ahora, el caso aún no se ha resuelto. La esposa de Fritzl tenía entonces un restaurante a orillas de ese lago, no muy lejos de Amstetten.

37. PROPIEDADES. Fritzl gozaba de una cómoda posición económica. Estaba registrado como propietario único de seis bienes inmuebles, repartidos en varias localidades de Baja Austria. En la lista figuran la propia casa familiar, tres edificios con numerosos apartamentos y locales comerciales, otra casa y un terreno, por un valor estimado de unos 2.2 millones de euros. En uno de estos solares adquiridos por Fritzl hace apenas tres años, había hecho mover decenas de metros cúbicos de tierra.

38. PRISIÓN. En la cárcel de Sankt Pölten, Fritzl ocupa una celda pequeña con una ventana por la que entra luz natural, con vistas a un jardín. Dispone de radio y televisión y puede salir a pasear una vez al día.

39. PERFIL. Joseph Fritzl, de 74 años, electricista retirado, ha sido descrito por la Policía como una persona “muy inteligente”. Sus vecinos le consideraban una figura respetable dentro de la comunidad. Su cuñada, no obstante, le califica ahora de “déspota”. Sus vecinos aseguran que siempre trataba de aparecer bronceado, que coqueteaba con las mujeres y que llamaba la atención por la forma exagerada que tenía de cuidar su jardín. Otros señalaron que gobernaba su casa “como un teniente general”, y que era muy celoso de su privacidad. Una ex compañera de trabajo señaló que “siempre iba bien vestido, como un diplomático”. Pertenecía al club de pesca de Amstetten.

40. QUEJAS. Algunos de los inquilinos de Fritzl se quejaron de que, con frecuencia, desaparecía comida del frigorífico de la casa. Uno de ellos aseguró no entenderlo, ya que Fritzl “parecía disfrutar de una buena situación económica”.

41. REUNIFICACIÓN. Todos los hijos de Elisabeth (salvo Kristen, que permanecía ingresada) y su madre se reunieron por primera vez el pasado 27 de abril, en la clínica donde están recibiendo tratamiento. El director del centro calificó de “asombroso” y “emocionante” la “facilidad con la que se juntaron”, tanto los chicos entre sí, como Elisabeth con su madre. Rosemarie le dijo a su hija que lo sentía y que no tenía “ni idea”.

42. SUICIDIO. En la prisión, Fritzl permanece bajo vigilancia las 24 horas para evitar que trate de quitarse la vida.

43. SECTA. Fritzl mantuvo durante todos estos años la versión de que su hija Elisabeth había sido captada por una secta, que le obligaba a deshacerse de sus hijos. El jefe de la Policía de Baja Austria señaló que “este hombre no dejó ningún cabo sin atar con el fin de engañar a su familia, a su esposa, a sus parientes, a los niños y a todo el mundo que le rodeaba”.

44. TAILANDIA. El periódico sensacionalista alemán Bild Zeitung divulgó un vídeo en el que aparece Fritzl durante unas vacaciones en Tailandia. Fue grabado por un amigo alemán con el que viajó al país asiático. En el vídeo se puede ver cómo Fritzl, en bañador, recibe un masaje de una mujer en la playa. En otra escena, se dispone a comer un trozo de carne y se le ve de muy buen humor.

45. TURISMO. Las autoridades austriacas han mostrado su preocupación por el efecto que pueda tener en el turismo casos como el de Fritzl o Kampusch. Franz Grossglockner, responsable del departamento de Turismo de Austria, manifestó a la agencia AP: “¿Quién va a querer visitar este país? Por cada cumbre nevada maravillosa o cada catedral tenemos también el haber empezado una guerra mundial, elegir o admitir a xenófobos como gobernantes, violadores psicópatas e incestuosos en los titulares…”.

46. USURPACIÓN DE PERSONALIDAD. En al menos una ocasión, Fritzl se hizo pasar por su hija Elisabeth para anunciar por teléfono a su esposa que había dejado a uno de los bebés en la puerta de la casa.

47. VERANO. Fritzl tenía planeado acabar con el encierro este verano, según el diario británico Daily Mail. Al parecer, “ya no aguantaba” a su hija, y estaba “cansado de su doble vida”, por lo que había decidido hacer volver a Elisabeth de la supuesta secta a la que presuntamente se había ido hace 24 años.

El caso del ‘monstruo de Amstetten” está lleno aún de interrogantes e incógnitas por resolver: ¿Cómo es posible que ningún miembro de la familia, especialmente la esposa de Fritzl, sospechara nada, ni tampoco los vecinos y conocidos de la pareja? ¿Quién cuidaba de los encerrados cuando Fritzl estaba de viaje? ¿Cómo fueron los partos en ese zulo? ¿Qué ocurría cuando alguno de los niños, especialmente siendo bebés, caían gravemente enfermos? ¿Cómo justificaba Fritzl ante su esposa los gastos extra en comida, ropa, etc?

50. ZULOS. Los sótanos como el que empleó Fritzl como zulo recibieron subvenciones del Gobierno austriaco durante la guerra fría para ser usados como refugios ante un posible ataque nuclear.

Nine women who were tricked into thinking they were part of Turkey’s Big Brother television show were rescued by police today.  They were held captive against their will for fear of having to forfeit approx. $33,000 US dollars if they wished to leave.  Per the BBC:

Police stormed the building in Riva, reportedly after family members became concerned they were being prevented from contacting the women.

According to local media, naked images of the women were sold on the internet.

They were also told to fight each other, wear bikinis and dance by the pool, HaberTurk newspaper reports.

The mother of one of women told the newspaper they were not abused or sexually harassed.

Is it just me or are criminals getting ridiculously smart?  How did that Fritzl dude in Austria keep his daughter in his basement, hidden from his wife mind you, and father a million kids with her over the course of 25 years?

Anyway, don’t bother looking for the pictures that were posted on the internet of these turkish beauties.  They don’t use razors over there and the turks don’t put out, trust me.

Monster by Alan Hall

I still remember the first time news broke about an Austrian man who kept his own daughter captive in an underground dungeon for 24 years, never letting her out, constantly raping her and eventually fathering seven incestuous children with her.  It was a story so sickening, so unimaginable that even the most morally depraved horror novelist could not have come up with it.  If it were made into a movie critics would laugh at it for being too unbelievable.  And yet it was absolutely true.

Monster by British journalist Alan Hall is a valiant attempt to understand Josef Fritzl, the man who shocked the world with the most atrocious crimes against his own flesh and blood.  I was initially skeptical about the book because of the speed with which it was released, concerned that it might be no more than a half-baked effort to cash in on everyone’s interest in the story. I was wrong.

While the book was published relatively close to the initial revelation (roughly 7 months), Hall has packed a great deal of insightful information into the 288-page book, complete with exclusive interviews (with neighbours, former tenants, childhood friends, police officers), photographs of those involved and diagrams of the dungeon.  Of course, an early publication also unfortunately means that there are many details left uncovered.  There are no interviews with any members of the Fritzl family, and no information relating to the Fritzl trial as it had yet to commence.

Summary

Hall takes an analytical approach that begins with Fritzl’s childhood, going into depths on his obsessive relationship with his overbearing mother, Nazi influences, and the fact that he was a couple of years older than his classmates.  These were the type of things that may have shaped his controlling personality and his abnormal yet insatiable sexual appetite.  Hall then ventures into Fritzl’s adulthood as he becomes an ingenious engineer (the skills from which would later be utilised to create the foolproof dungeon) and marries a subservient, unquestioning wife who bears him seven children, including Elizabeth, the daughter he would begin abusing at age 11 and imprison from age 18.

The book then takes a dark turn and begins detailing Elizabeth’s ordeal – the constant rapes, giving birth to her father’s children alone (armed with nothing but some primitive medical materials and an old book to guide her through), raising 3 of them by herself underground (and losing 4 – one to death and the other 3 brought above ground).  All this time, Fritzl went about his business as usual, renting out the apartments above to unsuspecting tenants, fooling police into believing Elizabeth had joined a cult, building extensions to the dungeon and visiting local brothels and taking debaucherous sex trips to Thailand.

It all ends when the health of Kerstin, Elizabeth’s eldest child, begins to fail and Fritzl has no choice but to seek professional medical attention.  The doctors grew suspicious of the girl’s unusual physical condition and alerted the police – things snowballed from there and soon the shocking details were revealed to the world.  At the time of publication, the entire underground and above-ground families were in a secure medical and psychiatric facility receiving treatment.

Style

I’m a fan of Hall’s writing style.  It is professional, easy to read and well-structured.  There were no boring bits that I wanted to skip.

A story like this would be no stranger to hyperboles.  Alan Hall does a good job of keeping his emotions in check and ensuring that Fritzl’s tale is told with a steady level of objectivity.  From time to time he wavers, but for the most part the writing remains journalistic and objective.

At the end, Hall does offer his personal views as he is particularly critical of Austrian culture – which he believes is partly responsible for the Fritzl case and several other similar cases of horrendous abuse, such as the Natascha Kampusch case (which Hall has also written books about).  Hall believes that since World War II, Austrians have tended to mind their own business and preferred to sweep things under the rug rather than bring them out in the open.  It is this culture, coupled with appalling police inadequacy and a justice system that is over-protective of criminals, that allowed someone like Josef Fritzl to get away with it for 24 years.  Regardless of whether you agree with Hall, he does put forward a compelling argument.

Final thoughts

Monster is a solid book suitable for those with an interest in the Fritzl case.  It answers a lot of the questions that I had about the case – such as (1) how Fritzl’s wife Rosemarie could possibly not have known what was going on, (2) how Elizabeth was unable to escape, and (3) how come the dungeon was not uncovered sooner (for those interested, see the end of this post for answers).

Unfortunately, the book was published before Fritzl stood trial, so I’m sure there are more details that were uncovered later not in the book.  Nevertheless, I found it a fascinating read, the type of book that you could finish in a single sitting on a rainy afternoon or night alone at home.

[Answers to my own questions: (1) Rosemarie was terrified of Fritzl and never questioned him despite his rape conviction and prostitute visits.  Fritzl also kept her busy and away for large chunks of the year running his motels.  Elizabeth had also run away before. All those that know the family are convinced she had absolutely no idea.  (2) Fritzl was a genius engineer who built the dungeon to be completely escape-proof and sound-proof.   There were 8 doors to the dungeon, including 2 that were electronic - and only he knew the codes.  (3) The police bought Fritzl's story that Elizabeth had run away to join a cult, and Fritzl's prior convictions were erased under Austrian law.  He purchased supplies from various far-away places to avoid detection.  He forbid his family (who were totally obedient to him) and his tenants (who were terrified of him) from going near the dungeon.  Various people who saw him and had suspicions never bothered to contact police.]

En fråga som jag, och jag tror många med mig, ställer sig angående sturebymordet är hur ungdomarnas relation hade kunnat gå så pass långt som den gjorde utan att någon ingrep. Tove Lind skallade för fan sin pojkvän i skolan så att han förlorade en tand, utan att någon brydde sig.

Jag läste en artikel i DN angående fritzlgrejen. Författaren kom till den mycket rimliga insikten att även om folk hade kunnat förstå vad Fritzl höll på med med tanke på hur mycket skumt som måste ha försigått, så önskar vi inte ett samhälle där folk misstänker varandra för alla möjliga saker så fort något är skumt. Jag skulle rentav påstå att det är ett tecken på att samhället är friskt att en människa kan göra en sådan sak. Det innebär nämligen att tilliten och respekten för var och ens integritet medborgarna emellan är stor, vilket måste betraktas som något positivt. Fritzl däremot är inte en produkt av samhället han lever i, utan är ett freak. Freaks kommer alltid att finnas, hur friskt samhället än är.

Jag tänkte till  en början att samma resonemang gick att applicera på sturebymordet, men nej. Det är skillnad på vuxna och barn. En vuxen människa måste i ett fungerande samhälle antas kunna fatta rimliga och informerade beslut, och bör därför lämnas ifred från snokande grannar och godtyckliga polisräder. En vuxen människa bör dessutom vara betydligt mycket mer stabil i sitt psyke, och mindre lättpåverkad och impulsstyrd. En tonåring däremot är inte, och ska inte heller betraktas som, lika känslomässigt utvecklad. Även om det enda sättet att lära sig att fatta vettiga beslut är att ha friheten att ta dem så måste det finnas vuxna omkring dem som håller ögonen öppna.

Så som jag har förstått det så har det länge varit tydligt att Tim Vrågård och Tove Lind varit alltför isolerade i sin relation för att det ska kunna betraktas som sunt. Lind har dessutom uppvisat tendenser till att vara ett riktigt freak, hon var tydligen, förutom en prestationsprinsessa, ätstörd och hade ett maniskt kontrollbehov. Eftersom deras relation var möjlig att beskåda under skoltid så borde någon verkligen ha reagerat på att det stod fel till. Speciellt när hon skallade honom.

Det stör mig att folk inte har något vidare perspektiv på vad det innebär att ha psykiska problem än att man “knarkar, skiter i skolan och slår dank”. Det är förvisso bara spekulationer, men jag kan verkligen tänka mig att Vrågård, som enligt rapporteringen ska ha varit ett problembarn, fick betydligt mycket mer uppmärksamhet i skolan, fast det uppenbarligen är Lind som är flippad på riktigt. Men så länge man sköter skolan och går i kyrkan så är det ju lungt.

Skolan borde sannerligen ha bättre koll på sina elevers psykiska hälsa. Inte för att förhindra den här typen av scenarion, som sker alldeles för sällan för att motivera en satsning på det. Men tänk på saken; om Tove Lind lyckades komma undan med att vara sån som hon är, hur många lättare psykiska defekter slinker inte igenom. Visst, folk fattade ju att hon inte mådde bra, men eftersom hon inte fick någon hjälp innan så antar jag att det hela viftades bort med förklaringar som att: “men så är det att vara ung”.  För den här typen av saker ska inte få passera under några som helst omständigheter, det tyder i allra högsta grad på att vårat samhälle inte är friskt.

Izhak Rabin wurde von einem Juden ermordet. War der Mörder Antisemit? Jüdischer Antisemit? Ein heterosexueller jüdischer Antisemit? Wie Bruno Kreisky? Ist Bruno Kreisky deswegen ein Mörder? Heute Nacht sind in Tel Aviv zwei Menschen getötet worden. In Pakistan waren es sechs. In Winnenden vor Kurzem fünfzehn. Und weltweit stirbt alle vier Sekunden ein Kind.

Politiet i Tyskland etterforsker et foreldrepar som skal ha holdt datteren sin innesperret i ni år. Den nå 13 år gamle jenta ble reddet ut fra foreldrenes hus i landsbyen Lübbenow i det østlige Tyskland for to uker siden, opplyste lokalmyndighetene onsdag.

Fikk tips fra nabo

Da gikk hun med bleie og hadde autistiske trekk, men det er uklart om dette skyldes foreldrenes omsorgssvikt. Myndighetene aksjonerte etter et anonymt tips fra en nabo, og jenta ble umiddelbart fraktet til legesjekk.

Jag lyssnar på Birro i Allvarligt Talat i P1. Han gör inte bort sig lika mycket som jag trodde han skulle. Men det kanske underlättar att Bob Hanson mjukat upp terrängen lite. Hur P1 kan förstöra förra sommarens (förra seklets?) bästa programidé genom att minimera vår, folkets, tillgång till oraklet Kristina Lugn* är för mig ofattbart.

Birro pratar om ondska. Han pratar om Fritzl. Han tar ett eget grepp. Han berättar om hur han gått in i sitt arbetsrum** och tänkt på Fritzls dotter tills det gav honom träningsvärk. Tänkt och tänkt, tänker jag mig. Men han tar inte Fritzls namn i sin mun, vill inte veta av namnet. Det vore att göra det för enkelt.
