PORT ARTHUR, Texas A maintenance worker trying to figure out what was causing a foul odor discovered

PORT ARTHUR, Texas A maintenance worker trying to figure out what was causing a foul odor discovered the decomposed body of a man inside a hollow tree trunk. The Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s office was expected to perform an autopsy Saturday on the unidentified man. “The man has been there for more than several days,” Port Arthur police Sgt. Martin Blitch said in Saturday’s editions of The Port Arthur News. The body was found Friday afternoon near Christus St. Mary’s Hospital at Gulf Coast Oncology. City crews helped remove the body from the tree. Police called in a pathologist to help investigate. The tree had an opening just wide enough for a person to sit on the edge, but one could fall in if he was to lean back, police said. The victim may have been homeless. He could have crawled into the trunk to escape the cold, then gotten stuck, police said. “We don’t know very much at this point,” Blitch said. “The matter is under investigation.” -Meghan Vital for Southeast Texas Newspaper Group A maintenance worker made a grisly discovery Friday afternoon when he investigated the orgins of a foul odor and found the badly decomposed body of a man lodged inside a hollow tree trunk. The body was discovered about 1:52 p.m. in a lawn near Christus St. Mary’s Hospital at Gulf Coast Oncology in the 2300 block of Ninth Street said Sergeant Martin Blitch. “The man has been there for more than several days,” Blitch said. City crews were called by PAPD to help get the tree down so the body could be extracted. PAPD officials also called in their own pathologist to assist with the investigation. “If the pathologist can see the scene, it always helps,” Blitch said. “It helps us in the investigation.” The hollow tree had an opening just wide enough for a person to sit down on the edge and possibly lean back or fall in, but Blitch said it is quite possible that foul play could be involved. “We don’t know very much at this point,” the PAPD sergeant said. “The matter is under investigation.” The body was described by Jefferson County Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Bob Morgan as a black male that was badly decomposed. PAPD officials also stated that the body was stuffed head-first into the tree stump. Corla Peterson, a Port Arthur resident and nurse, said she was leaving for lunch from her job at a near by doctor’s office when she said police cars began pulling into the parking lot of Gulf Coast Oncology. “I didn’t know what was going on,” she said. “All sorts of things went through my head but the idea that maybe they found a body in a tree didn’t cross my mind at all.” Peterson said she had passed by the lawn everyday this week and never thought twice about what the old tree that stood in the middle of the grassy area. “Now that I know that there was a body in that tree and I know that I pass by that area everyday, I’ve been wondering if I saw anything out of the ordinary or something suspicious and just didn’t realize what I saw,” she said. Blitch said the situation is under investigation by the PAPD and an autopsy on the unidentified male will be performed Saturday. -the orange leader
