by Jonathon Ramsey (RSS feed) on Dec 21st, 2009 at 4:28PM

There are hearts breaking all over Italy, and the biggest one of all is that which beats in the chest of Ferrari head Luca de Montezemolo. Michael Schumacher is still under contract to The Prancing Horse as a global ambassador and consultant for their road cars. However, given the opportunity to return to a Formula One cockpit and prove a thing or ten, he appears keen on racing no matter the color of the car.

Neither Schumacher nor the Mercedes F1 team is revealing anything public about the German’s chances of driving, but it’s been in the press for a few weeks now. Last week, Schumacher phoned Montezemolo and told him there was a “very, very, very strong possibility” he’d end up as a driver for Mercedes. Speculation is that the final say is only waiting on Schumacher’s neck to be declared fully healed after his motorcycle accident earlier this year.

If the 41-year-old Schumy does race again with Mercedes, it will be with the company that put him on the road to becoming one of the greatest racing drivers ever. And it will come at the expense of a muy doloroso de Montezemolo, who is so torn up about Michael switching camps that he has taken to calling the former Ferrari driver “the real Michael Schumacher,” and the potential Mercedes pilot, “the new Michael Schumacher.”

If it comes to pass, we’ll play a sad song for de Montezemolo on the jukebox, but we’ll do a dance for the coming F1 season: Rosberg and Schumacher in Mercedes’, Alonso and Massa in Ferraris, Hamilton and Button in McLarens, Vettel in his Red Bull. There hasn’t been a field like that in that kind of machinery in more than a decade. Please let it be March already…

I have had so much contact with spirits, that it has become routine to me. Don’t get me wrong

I have had so much contact with spirits, that it has become routine to me. Don’t get me wrong, I still have a feeling of gratitude and wonder towards the experience. It is always a gratifying thing to speak to and hear from the Other Side…

So in tribute to all the spirits that have taken the time to come through and see us, I wanted to talk about friendships that can take place between people who have “died” and those of us still here working on our physical lives.

This is a story about a dude named Simmie Williams…he was 17 years old when he was “murdered” in Fort Lauderdale, FL in 2008. He “died” early on a Friday morning. On the next day, Saturday, I woke up here in Richmond, Virginia, in the late afternoon, from a strange dream and felt like something was different, but I wasn’t sure what it was. Getting up from my nap, I could see a young black dude in my “mind’s eye” with a bunch of palm trees and a reddish sky behind him. I knew it was a spirit, but I wasn’t sure who.

I turned on the computer and started randomly reading news articles on the Net. I came across an article regarding the murder of a 17-year-old transvestite in Florida the day before. Looking at the picture that was included in the article, I was surprised to see that it was the young brother I could see around me in my apartment. I started speaking with him, and felt him there in the apartment with me, just hanging out, chilling with me.

At this point, I called Jeremy, who, as you all know, is a medium, and asked him what he saw. He saw the same spirit as I was seeing.

I could feel Simmie riding along with me in the car several times. I could feel him sitting behind me, massaging my shoulders while I drove around. I felt an incredibly strong connection, spiritually and otherwise, to him, and told him he was always welcome to hang around with me anytime, as I truly appreciated his company.

Jeremy channeled him for me a few months later; he came through wearing white pants, a white shirt, with some kind of unbuttoned cream-colored shirt over the white shirt. He was holding a white cat. He said that he and I had a lot in common, so that is how he found me. After he left his physical body, he could freely move around and be anywhere he wanted with the speed of his thought. He ended up gravitating to me.

Simmie was not condemned and thrown in some “hell” by some angry “god” for wearing womens’ clothing, even though the Bible condemns the practice. He was not condemned and judged for being attracted to men, and not women, even though the Bible says “men lying with men” is an “abomination to God”.

Simmie is the kind of person I would have liked to have met in the physical world. He is a very sensual person; he likes being physically affectionate more than sex itself. I could have easily become good friends with him here in the physical. But I am happy just to have him around, chillin’ with me from time to time, in spirit form…

Jeremy said he felt Simmie is living it up in the Spirit World. While his family, friends, and others who love him and are still in the physical world are crying and grieving, he is partying and enjoying himself like never before. Let me tell you: one thing the spirits want you to all know is : DO NOT GRIEVE. Sadness from time to time is OK, that is part of the process of loss. But continued grieving does nothing good for you, or for them. In fact, it can actually bring them down: thoughts about them attract and pull them to the person thinking about them, automatically. If you are constantly grieving, for a long time, you are draining them as well as yourself.

When a person “dies”, there is NOTHING to be upset about. In fact, when a person leaves this world, we ought to throw a BIG PARTY for them!! For real…that is what a spirit would want!! Party for them: knowing that they are there with you, partying with you, even though you might not always be able to see or hear them…

As I write this piece, I see and feel Simmie here with me, looking over my shoulder, reading along with me…

For sure, a good friend doesn’t have to be only in a physical body!!

One love to you Simmie, for real, thanks for everything you have done, and do, for me…I hope you continue to consider me worthy of your friendship – and I can’t wait to get back to the Spirit World & chill with you for real!!

In peace, in love, in harmony

…your friend Matt

Can you believe a man had been parachuting for at least 2 years then all of a sudden he does one bad jump? Well as you probably know, there always is a bad day in a career, either you get fired, you quit, you disappoint your boss, anything to satisfy that one bad day.

Well that bad day was for this man, he’d jumped at least 6,500 times in his life out of an airplane, but as I said before there always has to be at least one bad run.

He had been filming for a documentary he was making over the dormant volcanoes. It had been snowing at the time, unfortunately, but this didn’t matter to him. He’d jumped out of the plane and as he was going down, his film making had distracted him and the “snow cloud” he’d fallen into didn’t let him see anything. Once out of the snow cloud he’s noticed that he was about 3 SECONDS from the ground!

He said that he had pulled out his parachute, without thinking, and sure enough he had thought about his family while doing it. To his shock he’d survived but he immediately knew he’d broken his back.

Saturday afternoon and roommate and I are sitting on the couch watching the Hallmark channel. That means back-to-back reruns of The Nanny. Oh the 90s. Our attempt to get up and running for the day was thwarted when we discovered the living room rug damp where dog soiled herself.

First “assignment” of the week has been posted, the translation, that is. Still brushing up on Chinese financial terminology slash writing structure, thank goodness we have editors? View from the office:

Other random items of interest… overheard in the elevator, prompted by cash falling out of my pocket: in the news yesterday morning, two kids found a bag in a park with 40,000 RMB in it. They brought it back home to their mother, who said they had to take it to the police. What was interesting was the commentary from the lady in the elevator that followed. She said something along the lines of, “That just goes to show, kids really are the only ones with their hearts in the right place.” Okay, I get that this society is still very gradually stepping away from the reverberations from the Cultural Revolution, but there is still this axiom that people are inherently bad and only serve in self-interest. So I’m not understanding how that particular story related to her comment at all?

Anyways, as Copenhagen’s coming to a close, looks like it was relatively unproductive. Obama signed a three-page deal with China, Brazil, India and South Africa that “did not meet even the modest expectations that leaders set for this meeting,” according to this New York Times story. Entirely unrelated, Tiger Woods fail. He apparently gave an exclusive interview/cover shoot to Men’s Fitness in 2007 so that sister publication National Enquirer wouldn’t reveal an affair. #Tiger

Sir, Regarding your letter and comment Common sense and history both suggest a pause in QE and Essen

Sir,

Regarding your letter and comment Common sense and history both suggest a pause in QE and Essential to keep QE available, I am writing as the Organiser of the Forum for Stable Currencies which has been presenting meetings at the House of Lords and Commons since 1998. See our archive site.

I am also writing as a mathematician and systems analyst formerly at CERN, i.e. I have analysed not only the statistics of the Bank of England but also what “money” is and how it is created. Hence I cannot concur with Quantitative easing explained by the FT.

On Money as Debt also Known as Credit, I have published “Quantitative easing” to camouflage “printing credit” which is possibly the best explanation of what QE really is:

The printing of “money as Credit” by the Bank of England or any other central bank.

The reason why QE can’t work is obvious to me:

if the Treasury were to supply money, it would be free of interest (M0); therefore “printing money” would work

see our submission to the Treasury Select Committee in response to the Stern review Green Credit for Green Purposes and Green Taxation vs Green Funding

“printing Credit” (M4) can’t work

97% of the money supply consists of Credit

nobody creates the interest necessary to pay for Credit

the Credit share in the total money supply is increased yet more

the Cash : Credit ratio gets worse and worse.

Unfortunately, policy seems to be determined by the City and not by Westminster, i.e. the Bank of England and other central banks determine what happens to the global economy. For an excellent overview, you may want to view The Global Financial Crisis by professor of economics Michel Chossudovsky.

This is the third and final part of a look at the FT’s Decision Dynamics survey (see here for part 1

This is the third and final part of a look at the FT’s Decision Dynamics survey (see here for part 1 and part 2. This part looks at the role of social media in decision making.

Frankly, I think there’s a lot of tosh and assertion on the importance of social media in influence. In short, while there’s been a rapid rise in the use of social media there’s little evidence that it’s impact decisions, particularly in the B2B world. We’re all blogging and Twittering and ‘LinkingIn’ to each other but not in the context of decision making. Anyway, back to the FT survey.

This first chart (below) illustrates that rapid rise in use of social media by enterprise decision makers. As the FT notes, “Work-related use of social bookmarking and community sites has exploded in the past year.” It has, but only to the levels seen to date for reading blogs and using professional networking sites.

(Source: Financial Times Annual Decision Dynamics Survey 2009)

The most telling chart, though, is this next one, which shows the usage of various types of social media in a work or leisure context. It’s interesting to see the use of social bookmarking (Dig, Delicious, etc) as a decision making aid. But webcasts and streaming video are also important and more established in the B2B marketing mix.

Most surprising, given the volume of noise on the subject, is the low penetration of Twitter.

(Source: Financial Times Annual Decision Dynamics Survey 2009)

My own take on this is that Twitter:

(a) Is useful if you know who you want to follow, but can’t help identify important people

(b) Is a great echo chamber of followers and followees, but has limited reach outside the Twitterverse, and

(c) Is really only used by people that don’t have a “traditional” job (autonomous, mobile, networked), which may include most of the readership of this blog and most analysts, but not your average CIO.

Paying for Online Content Google had recently reached an agreement with the newspapers to provide li

Paying for Online Content

Google had recently reached an agreement with the newspapers to provide limited access after a fixed number of searches. And the music companies are inventing pricing models and new partnerships every day. But more about pricing music later.. The one we are saying is tough for the media giants to survive is the one where they have to choose what to charge for their web edition.

I think it was more productive when it was a lower all you can eat charge and common sense dictates that this price be the same across all web channels. But WSJ and NYT are hell bent on creating a bad taste in the readers’ mouth with separate charges when you try to use your Kindle then iPhone and even for e-readers.

None of us finally minds paying for online content. For those that need it, there are student subscriptions, library subscriptions and corporate subscriptions. But paying for the same thing twice is kind of a revenue dampener. And invasive online advertising isn’t going to pay either. The customer will never get used to this new model. The Advertiser might but he should not be confused as the reader. The advertiser is getting a different segment on the e-readers and the Kindles if it makes any sense for him to go there. But the reader is the same And this serious business reader is powerful to stop you in your tracks by removing his credit card information despite your efforts at scamming him or her into giving away all control of his paying activity. These practices will be heavily penalised on this new continent and the Googles are much ahead in making sure they provide all content in web searches to give access.

Creating a brand online is not going to be easy, but you cannot break down your readership with challenges like these. You have

I will pay for your content, once

| Rafes Radar

I consider it a professional courtesy to pay, even handsomely, for excellent work. What I wont do is pay for twice. Unfortunately, thats what the WSJ wants me to do:I recently downloaded the iPhone app for the WSJ, and discovered that getting access to the stories that Im paying for already on the Web was going to cost me another $52 a year. And thats the discounted rate for existing subscribers. iPhone and BlackBerry app access is $78 a year if you dont already have either a Web or print subscription. Its only if you subscribe to both the Web and print editions of the WSJ that you get iPhone app access for “free.”No, I dont think so.Credit: Screenshot by Rafe Needleman/CNETThis is madness. Im paying for online access to the stories. Why on earth should the publication charge me for it twice, or differently, just because I want to view that content, sometimes, on another connected device?

via Dear newspapers: I will pay for your content, once | Rafes Radar – CNET News.

Some of our regulars would feel a little disoriented by this extract, if only because the web has seemed so mature an d in tune with the print editions as far as the newspapers are concerned. The truth is the web editions and now the Kindle and the iPhone editions are being touted as different channels by most places, with the Kindle even charging without any recourse to another edition be it print or web. The NYTimes even charges separately for e-readers and Kindle

The Financial Times has had a much more robust pricing model for all its electronic editions. These simple things have distinguished its prominent position from the academic positions for Euromoney and WSJ publications and the same case study does hold true even now.

Even as Brian Moynihan takes over at BofA under Walter Massey, Kenneth Lewis’ impact is still likely material in Bank Am’s social world. And even if less people Google for Bank of America today or for any other bank for that matter, the social media might easily keep BofA alive and winning because in its social practices its just noe that ‘vitriolic’ that the mdeia would try to make it out to be. And you can’t force the social media participant to ignore social opinion. The BofA brand will survive and grow stronger as long as it is feeding the social groups in a consistent manner Similarily the press and the networks would have to adopt the social way to win hearts. Shouting from the rooftops and relying on the price message will also accelerate the negative impact of such foolhardy decisions.

It’s all very humorous and fun to poke fun at the funny ways things run in this region. But let’s not forget this economy has grown from a small trading village under a Sheikhdom with not much more than a vision and a dream. True they lack many things. Basic commercial law with provisions for bankruptcies being one. But Dubai prospered for decades at the hands of mainly South-Asian merchants who learned to adopt to the system and use its infrastructure and location to facilitate trade between the closed-off regional economies. When Dubai real estate, being the first regional city to allow foreign ownership, finally took off post 9-11 when regional investors looked for places to park their money without excessive nosing around by the forces that be, it started a chain reaction of excesses that knew no bounds. Money was cheap and any project that was announced was gobbled by investors with bags of cash. Then the Russians started coming with literally briefcases of cash to whitewash their hard earned money and what was a city to do, turn them away? Rules were non-existant. The city had never had developments on such massive scale before. Rights of consumers, responsibilities of developers, roles of banks were all issues that had never been faced before. So it was all very ad-hoc trying to come to terms with the huge demand and trying to come up with rules to govern it all.

But despite all the problems and the mistakes, one must give credit where credit is due. Unlike other regional power centers, Dubai invested in its city. It expanded its infrastructure, tried to implement best practices, albeit too slowly, and make the best of its niche facilitator status that had been successful in activities like trade since the ’70s.

Going forward, if Dubai truly wants to become a global player, it must realize it must shake the cobwebs of a different era off. It must realize it cannot hope to be what it aspires to be with the kind of regulations, rules and transparencies that bid it well during its early years, but are holding it back in this new age. Western eyes look at this city and snicker at the lack of proper laws that provide adequate protection and freedoms to those who live and work here. Things like a having a local partner in any enterprise you undertake is ludicrous. Especially since most of the time the local gets a fixed annual sum while the expatriate goes along his merry way. What the western eyes fail to see behind the idiosyncrasies is the unique placement of this city that aims to be to the Middle East what Singapore is to Asia. So if Dubai can just gets its housekeeping in order, manage its debt burden, and align its laws and regulations in line with the best practices, this city can truly become a beacon of hope and dreams set amongst the dunes of the Arabian desert.

Slept for hours! Think it must have been a good 10hrs. Woke up late but felt good for it.

I had a great meditation session too with some good insights – posted later.

Finally wrote those thank-you letters for my birthday money etc. They’re still a bit of a chore, but nowhere near as much as when I was younger. A card seems piss to write in comparison to an essay!

I organised the various subject matter that had been scattered over the period of the term.

I then chilled out and read ‘The Odyssey’ for a good hour and a half. I never used to make time for reading, but now I do, I find I really enjoy it!

06/12

Went to the gym, and worked my back and shoulders.

Read the FT – using my new found ability to focus on reading!
