I just want to say at the start that this scene is inspired by the conversation of Fear the Boot #168, and not from a personal experience with my current GM. This particular epsiode was a wonderful mine of topics for me, and this one is about the comments the hosts made about staying in the game when the GM is floundering and the created scene is failing. Their suggestion was for the player to go along with it.

I think this is a great idea.

So much of the game burden is put on the GM to come up with the plot and keep the story moving, but you know what? Most GMs are people too. This means they have stuff going on their lives and can’t always bring their “A” game. Don’t let a yet another fat, balding innkeeper prevent you from enjoying talking to Srodo and Fam, the halflings that have come into the inn seeking help to get rid of some jewelry.

If the scene is about to crumble, there’s two ways to take it as player: prop it up or pull the legs out and run far away.  Let’s say the orc chieftain has just captured the party and is threatening to go all Sweeny Todd on them.  But his death threats as voiced by the GM unintentionally sound more like Galaxy Quest Alan Rickman and less like Robin Hood Alan Rickman. Amuse the GM and hold in your laughter and feign terror anyway. This is tough at first but it keeps the scene going, encourages the GM, and keeps you and your friends around the table focused and in the game.

The other thing to do is drive the plot in another direction entirely. You can do this in a way that’s fun, allows the GM to still respond to and regain the story, but you get to drive for awhile.

Suppose you surprise the GM by declaring you want to go to the shop and sell off that ancient amulet instead of carrying it around for when it’s needed later.  If he says “yes” lets you go ahead with the sale but hasn’t planned for the contingency and stammers and stutters, you can lead the GM.  Say “we’ll go over to Garog’s Fine Jewelery and Watches”, even if you have never encountered this guy before. You’ve just created an NPC for the GM to play with, and if they’re sharp come up with a quick description, back story, and store. They may have trouble coming up with a price for a priceless item. Suggest 250gp and let the GM haggle from there. Maybe he’ll force you to hold on to the amulet anyway by offering a price so low it’s insulting. After all Garog never liked dealing Half-Elves with no appreciation for beauty.

Not all GMs will like you taking over the plot, even if it just to help them out. I think, if anything, this blog is about not letting one ego ruin the fun for everybody. I think most GMs understand that D&D is about shared storytelling and will appreciate you helping out and keeping the story moving. Just don’t be a dick about it. If he doesn’t, it’s time to have a post-game talk and reestablish boundaries and make sure everyone is cool with a particular play-style.

There is something to be said about the power of our imagination. It can come up with some amazing things, but also create some horror shows that Stephen King would admire. This is particularly true when it comes to getting a notice from a tax agency in the mail.

I live in California. This means my business and individual taxes are controlled by the Franchise Tax Board. The “FTB” makes the IRS look like Mother Theresa. It is nasty agency that will spare no penny going making a taxpayer’s life utterly miserable. Given this reputation, you can imagine how I felt when I opened my post office box and found a thick letter from the FTB among my bills and junk mail. Oh, no.

The distance from the post office to my home is about 2 miles. Being California, there is a traffic light every 10 feet or so. This gave me plenty of time to consider what was in the letter. Why not open it? No, I was going to need an adult beverage for this. It was probably an audit notice. I was probably going to spend the next six months trying to prove why I need pens for my business. I didn’t have time to do that. I had a business to run. I was going to be bankrupted…

I was in a good lather by the time I got home. I walked in the door giving off such bad vibes, my friendly dog did a u-turn and headed for the backyard. After some liquid courage, I opened the letter and read closely. Guess what? It was sort of good news. California charges incorporated businesses $800 a year for the “privilege of doing business in California.” I had apparently paid mine twice for some fiscal year, once at the beginning and once at the end. I was getting an $800 refund plus interest!

Suffice to say, I was not going to be audited, ruined or thrown into bankruptcy. Heck, I was even going to get a nice refund. The letter of death turned out to be no problem at all. This is often the case, so don’t fret like me when you get a notice in the mail. Open it up to see what it is and avoid the nightmare scenarios your imagination can come up with!

Les déploiements de la fibre optique dans le monde se poursuivent à grande vitesse, selon le dernier bilan de l’Idate. Quelle que soit la technologie utilisée (FTTB, FTTH, VDSL, FTTLA et FTTX+LAN), on comptait à fin 2008 pas moins de 48 millions d’abonnés, soit 39% de plus qu’un an auparavant (+ 8 millions).

L’Asie constitue le premier ‘foyer’ de la fibre optique dans le monde avec près de 5 millions de nouveaux abonnés en une seule année. La concentration la plus importante d’abonnés FTTH/B est localisée, ce n’est pas une surprise, au Japon et en Corée du Sud – avec près des quatre cinquième de l’ensemble des abonnés FTTH/B à fin 2008.

On compte désormais 22,7 millions d’abonnés dans cette zone (+4,8 millions). Une progression qui est également due aux nombreux déploiements en Chine.

Même tendance en Amérique du Nord avec 1,9 million d’abonnés supplémentaires en un an (pour un total de 5 millions). “Le marché US, qui se classe ainsi en troisième position derrière le Japon et la Corée du Sud, totalise 16% des abonnés au niveau mondial. Mais avec un taux de progression de 90% en 2008, les Etats-Unis s’imposent comme le marché FTTH/B à la plus forte croissance”, explique l’Idate.

1,5 million d’abonnés en Europe

Du côté de l’Europe, le nombre d’abonnés est encore faible (1,5 million) mais le taux de progression est important : +60% en un, soit 500 000 abonnés supplémentaires sur la période.

For the fifth successive year, Swiss Re reported a Life Assurance Protection Gap which, measured in sums assured, remains unchanged, at £2.3 trillion (GBP 2,300 billion). The Income Protection Gap remains at £190 billion in annual benefits.

These are collossal figures showing the population still feels that it either does not need protection or possibly that it cannot afford the cover available.

It is incumbent on both the insurance industry as well as the government to raise awareness, improve understanding and increase take-up of such products amongst consumers.

For what it’s worth here’s a few tips and pointers: -

Life Assurance v Life Insurance – Whilst the distinction between the two has become more blurred and almost interchangeable, in general, the term insurance refers to providing cover for an event that might happen while assurance is the provision of cover for an event that is certain to happen.

A life insurance policy provides cover for a set period of time. If the worst were to happen during that time  then the insurance company will be required to pay out the agreed sum to the beneficiary. If the person outlives the term of the policy or cancels mid-term, then the insurance policy will cease and no payment will be made.

Life assurance is different from insurance, and will always result in a payment. This is achieved by combining an investment element along with an insured sum. This means that over time the value of the policy can increase as the investment bonuses are added. If a person covered by life assurance were to die, then the insured sum would be paid out, alongside the investment bonuses which would have accrued over time. If it is necessary to cancel the policy prior to the end of any designated term period, or the death of the life being covered, then once an investment bonus has been added, the life assurance policy will have an encashment value. It is therefore possible to cash in a policy earlier than its usual termination date, in order to collect on the investment portion.
Richard Brown, Chief Executive of Moneynet.co.uk, has explained the confusion between the two terms by stating, “most life insurance companies offer a wide range of insurance and investment services – for example pension, investment funds, investment bonds, car insurance, home & contents insurance, life assurance, and even loans. Sometimes a ‘life insurance’ company will call itself a ‘life assurance’ company but they mean one and the same.”

It is the former, life insurance with no cash-in value that we are focusing on, as an example of pure protection.

Life Insurance – An amount to be repaid upon death to repay a mortgage, loan, an inheritance tax liability (IHT) or any other purpose.

It is preferable to have cover for at least any outstanding liabilities, the main one tending to be a mortgage.

However sometimes given the option between taking cover and not having an additional monthly outgoing, many borrowers, especially cash-strapped first time buyers (FTB), choose to delay taking out life insurance because “it won’t happen me.”

But rather than having no cover at all it should be possible to advise someone that it is better for them to take a smaller amount of cover, which may only cost £5 per month, that may not repay the whole mortgage but upon death of the policy-holder will provide an amount of money that would take care of short-term financial worries (several mortgage payments, additional child-care costs, burial fees etc) and not leave the dependent(s) facing as large a financial predicament as they might have had with no insurance at all at a very difficult time emotionally.

Life insurance is simple, cheap and a relatively easy sell.

But for most single people with no dependents life insurance is not necessary or as important as other types of protection. The reason being if the policy holder dies, he/she may not be concerned with any remaining debts.

It is more relevant to this person to be able to pay his/her bills in the event of diagnosis of a critical illness (CI) or long-term disability. This is also true if the breadwinner in a household only has life insurance, and he/she becomes ill and unable to work either through a CI or accident/disability. That person’s ability to earn an income and provide for the family diminishes and the life policy would only be of use if he/she were to die.

For those who think these sort of incidents only happen to other people take a look at this.

With an income protection and/or critical illness policy the payments would kick in and provide the necessary financial relief to maintain a household’s income and a roof over their heads.

Critical illness cover, like life insurance, provides a tax free lump sum and whilst life insurance tends to be bought mainly on price, CI requires more expert advice as different providers have varying definitions, degrees of cover and claims-to-payout statistics.

Whilst CI is mostly associated with being used to pay off a mortgage, it can be used for any purpose such as funding treatment not available on the NHS, pay for private treatment to bypass NHS waiting lists or even pay for an exotic holiday if that is what the policy holder and his/her close ones want.

Income Protection (IP), of which sales rose by 13.5% in 2008 according to Swiss Re, pays out a tax free monthly income and is designed to replace lost income as a result of long-term disability.

Most people tend to take their good health for granted despite the Department of Work & Pension (DWP) confirming more than two million people in the UK today have been off work for longer than six months because of an illness or accident

Without a regular income a person’s paying for today and planning for tomorrow disappears. Without an income mortgage payments, household bills, savings plans all stop.

So protecting income is incredibly important and IP plans should be considered instead of and sometimes alongside ASU or PPI policies.

An IP policy can prove exceptional value when compared with normal ASU as they can end up paying out until retirement age as opposed to 12 or 24 months. Plus they are not limited to just covering a mortgage but other household bills too although they tend to be limited to between 50% and 65% of a person’s pre-disability income to ensure potential claimants are not better off claiming on the policy than working.

Most people do not have enough savings to see them through the rainy days, most employers do not pay full pay indefinitely, even Statutory Sick Pay is limited to 28 weeks and state benefits are unlikely to be sufficient.

After countering the claim that it will never happen to them, the last remaining argument against protection is being unable to afford it.

Often, though not always, the same person will be paying £45 for satellite/digital TV, paying gym membership and not using the gym or over-spending money on food, drink or elsewhere that could be curbed.

It is not about affordability, more to do with priorities, and it is important to go through one’s finances to establish what is unncessary expenditure.

By doing a budget plan, as well as identifying where wasteful spending can be cut back, it will show the fixed financial outgoings that still need paying in the event of loss of income and therefore need protecting.

Don’t take a chance on your finance or the security of your loved ones. Take some protection advice.

Di radio milik pemkab ini FTB menyosialiasikan UU nomor 14/2008 tentang Keterbukaan Informasi Publik (KIP). Dijadwalkan, acara itu mengudara setiap Kamis malam. ”Semua lembaga publik, tak peduli penegak hukum atau pemerintahan harus terbuka. Jika ada informasi yang layak didapat masyarakat jangan disembunyikan,” kata Amin Faried ketua FTB.

Talk show yang berdurasi satu jam itu juga memberi kesempatan pada masyarakat untuk berpartisipasi. Pemancu acara, Solekan Mochtar siap menerima beberapa pertanyaan dalam dialog itu. Dalam UU tentang KIP itu, kata Amin, memungkinkan didirikan komisi informasi publik (KIP) di Blora. ”Menurut kami KIP sangat penting. Karena bisa menjembatani kepentingan masyarakat memperoleh informasi,” katanya.  

Sebab, menurut dia, saat ini keterbukaan informasi di Blora masih sangat kurang. Salah satu yang paling nyata adalah dokumen APBD. Padahal, APBD itu dibuat untuk pembangunan dan kepentingan rakyat. Namun, untuk memperoleh dokumen APBD itu sangat sulit. Sehingga warga seolah-olah dibuat buta dengan APBD. Sehingga tidak bisa ikut mengontrol dana pembangunan. ”Anggarannya berapa dan bagaimana pertanggungjawabannya, selama ini tidak pernah tahu. Dengan UU KIP itu, nanti informasi seperti itu wajin diumumkan,” tegasnya.(ono)

hmmm i think i’ve been in hiatus for almost two weeks?? yeah coz things kinda difficult now for me to write~~ well i meant in terms of my “house” condition now~~ staying with family consists of pairs with two babies -soon will be 3 ^^; also with one mother in law made things rather difficult =P

soon as i got home.. i had to play with “my babies”.. they kept nagging at me.. mmm not really actually.. but they will if i started to open aoi ^^; so better to play safe right?? hahahahaha..

but still.. love my babies anyway~~ still cute in some way.. and annoying in other way.. but that’s why we called them babies right???

and coz i felt sorry for neglecting my blog for quite a long time~~ i’ve tried to find my time ^o^ hehehehehe.. and seems i did it!! yippie!!! hehehehe..

i remembered before i had my graduation ceremony.. my batch made our farewell party in one of friend’s aunt house *thanks goes to wucen hehehe* and actually~~ for me.. the party didn’t left deep impression in my memory.. well of course i’m happy coz i can gathered with my classmates.. but it seemed everyone only mind their own business.. not really gather as one *maybe just my feeling*.. nevertheless.. still happy can meet my friends.. especially those special ones hehehehe ^o^

and there’s one part that i’m kinda regretting until now~~ it’s the part when we gathered together and shared our deepest thoughts about others and ourselves.. well during my part.. i don’t think i told them everything~~ partially coz i kinda unprepared.. partially coz i don’t think i want to tell them at that time.. but as i remembered it again.. yahhh it keeps bothering me.. why i didn’t tell them at that time??

and what is exactly i want to tell my friends???

first of all.. i want to say.. being part of 2004 are one of the best thing that happen to me.. of course there will be bad as well as good times.. but i never think of that as a negative things in my life.. i still like my batch and thankfully for that.. also.. many things happened during my 4 years.. things that made me who i am now.. made me stronger and weaker at the same time.. for 4 years.. i had bestfriends who turned to be friends only.. just friends that turned to be close friends.. i lost some.. but on the other hand.. i also got others.. thanks for that~~

and for those who thinks i’m taking my friends for granted~~ well.. when they said like that to me.. actually.. even though i acted cool and calm.. i’m really hurt!! never once i had a thought like that.. and there.. some people who think of me that way~~ what could i say??? and what happen next is~~ ya you know lha~~ hahahaha.. i’m very sad and regreted.. those who i thought to be my friends.. turned out to be just friends.. barely even know me..

what surprising me.. those who i never thought would knew me.. indeed they knew me!! i’m glad they did ^o^

i’ve been repeating this matter over and over again coz this thing had occupied my mind for quite a long time~~ and for some reasons.. i just can’t get over it T.T

more to say.. hmmmm i’m really grateful that during my last year.. although i lost.. but i found some mates that seems to know me quite well ^o^ really really glad for that.. and i think.. the best part during my college time was when i did my assisstantship in DNA Technology lab.. together with *especially* icha, edith, dwi, wucen, tika, gludhug n denny ^o^ for some people.. being DNA assisstant was tiring and yes it was.. but on the contrary.. i found my mates here.. and enjoyed every moment i spent with them.. from sunrise till sunset.. from wendys to tampomas hahahhaha.. yah miss that a lot~~

so.. ya as i said before.. my life was up and down for 4 years.. lost some friends but got new friends.. and for that.. i’m really grateful.. just want to let u know girls.. i’m really treasured you all *i meant ALL.. so you too jo,bul,cas,chip,tan,p,nes,li* .. maybe i don’t show it much.. maybe never show it too ^^; but hopefully you will understand~~ that’s just how i interact with my loved ones ^o^ yeah yeah.. need to fix that =P

HAri Minggu kmrn, tepatnya 26 Oktober, gw di-wisuda!!!!! Wisuda Fakultas Teknobiologi (Bioteknologi)!!!! Akhirnya setelah 4 thn… jadi ceritanya setelah ikutan farewell, malemnya gw jemput bonyok di bandara ama PJ.. terus nginep di Hotel Ibis SLipi.. ada Koko dan ade2 gw dr Bandung juga.. jd lengkap deh sekeluarga hahahahhahahahahaha

Nah sekitar jam 6, penata rias dari Jhonny Andrean dtg ke hotel.. tapi pertamanya make up Icha dulu terus baru gw… oiya, gw nginep di Hotel Ibis juga bareng keluarga Icha (Icha+bonyoknya)…. acaranya mulai jam 9.. dan you know what? kita telat!!!!! hahahahhahahaha kita baru berangkat dari hotel jam 9! hahahahahahhahaha untung berangkatnya dianter PJ.. Terus pas nyampe Atma kita ketemu Elisabeth (yg dijulukin Miss Late krn emg tukang telat pas kuliah hahahahahhaha).. ternyata msh ada yg lbh telat ahahhaahhahahahahha

pas kita dtg.. acara emg uda dimulai.. The Government announced this morning that they are to be waiving stamp duty on properties below the £175,000 mark for a period of 12 months.

Great Stuff! Darling’s finally crawled through the stingy nettles and made a decision. Although will it make a difference?

Best thing about this “little” announcement is that finally everyone at least knows where they stand.

Why he couldn’t have reduced it for properties up to at least £250k beats me. That would have kicked the market up the behind and automatically got things moving enough to recoup many of the losses it has made in announcing it.

Whilst it may help people at the bottom of the housing ladder saving them a maximum of £1750 it will not entice anyone else to move as they will stay be paying the full rate.

It is a good thing though nevertheless if you are looking to buy at the moment upto the £200k mark. Not only can you now look for a house £1750 more expensive, it will also bring down the prices of properties around the £200k mark as people will begrudge having to pay stamp duty for only a slightly more expensive property. Not good news for 2nd time buyers. Bet definitely good news for 1st.

Em homenagem ao primeiro comentário que este blog recém-nascido acaba de receber, este post será sobre a Flower Travellin’ Band, que acaba de voltar de uma viagem (como diz o comentário) para tocar no Fuji Rock Festival. Assista ao novo PV da banda aqui. Sinceramente, eu gostei, e não foi só pela honra do comentário. Se não fosse o inglês quase incompreensível, eu não diria que é japonês. São tantas bandinhas previsíveis-chuchu-comerciais-repetitivas-rostinho-cabelo que já tinha perdido as esperanças na música japonesa. Até baixei alguns álbuns… não sei se a banda é contra o download, mas caso contrário, não teria como conhecer a música, já que na lojinha de CDs perto de casa só vende os enlatados e eu não vou ao Fuji Rock. Segundo este blog, FTB seria o Led Zeppelin do Japão, ou um Black Sabbath progresivo e psicodélico. Veja e diga se concorda!

I just picked up my Canon Canoscan 8800F from work today, it took me a little while to install. I actually re-installed it twice and had to reboot my computer about 8 times, however, all is well. I had about 3 rolls of film, plus 2 rolls 120 to scan. I can do a roll of 36 in about 1 1/2 hours. The scan speed on a regular picture or document is stupid fast. Here is a few shots that I liked. These and other shots will be in the Canon FTb and Holga 120N sections.
