So I hope that, like, everyone will have, like, a good Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is really a time for peace and stuff. At my school we, like, talked about what we are thankful for. I said I was, like, thankful for my T.V. and, um, my iPod. My stupid teacher said I would have to, like dig a little deeper. I don’t even know what it’s, like, supposed to mean. What am I, like, supposed to dig? Does she, like, want me to, like, go to an archeological dig or whatever? Like, what am I supposed to dig? I’m like looking around my, like, room and it, like, totally describes me. I have a postcard from, like, my best friend from, like, Bolivia. I have all the Harry Potter books ’cause, like, I like to read and stuff. I have my walls painted fuchsia and Chartreuse ’cause those are, like, my favorite colors like I said in the first blog thing. I know it’s, like, really late and stuff but my mom doesn’t even know I’m, like, up. I’m really proud of my, like, sneakiness and stuff. Oh Emfrea Kingjee!

Not to be confused with the flower (fuschia), this group took its name from Mervin Peake’s book Titus Groan (just like the proto-prog group of the same name, Steerpike and Gormenghast) and was the project of Tony Durant. Having dabbled in the music business since 66 (he started with Henry Cow’s Chris Cutler in a band called Louise), but leaving it for a University spell, he started writing again eventually forming a trio with drummer Gregory and bassist Day. But Durant was interested in using and integrating string instrument in another fashion than using them as a string section for embellishment, so they joined forces with a truio of classical music student babes (what a coincidence, them being a trio too . The project was contemporary of the start of ELO and Jan Dukes De Grey. The music developed then very charmingly as a folkish trio with extended strings arrangements integrated fully in their music.

The album was well received by the critics but insufficiently promoted, sank without a trace and the group did not manage to tour the university circuit to promote it either. The group disbanded a little later that year, but Durant revived it for further sessions in 75. The albums with all of those side-sessions got a release in 05. This historical album got a re-issue in the Cd format in 01

Bancurile legate de culoarea mov nu-si au sensul pentru ca nuanta asta nu are nimic vulgar in ea.

I’ve been so looking forward to putting this post together. It’s my homage to all the colours of an English October, starting with the bright golden yellows and oranges of the early weeks, working towards the medley of crisp brown and yellow fallen leaves at month’s end. This year we’ve been enjoying an Indian Summer so there have been many beautiful sunny days to bring out the best in all these beauties.

Fuchsias love our garden. Not only do they assume giant proportions, but also they give us a lovely colourful show from May right through to the end of the year.

We still have a few roses holding on. I like the warm autumnal background colours of this image.

This Virginia Creeper and Russian Vine grow together along the wall of a garden I walk past regularly when I go out with the dog. They give a truly magnificent display every year, looking particularly stunning on sunny October days.

I’m sure we’ve all seen silk dresses looking just like this berberis!

These Nerine plants always make me think of fairy rings, but so far I haven’t been able to capture that effect with my camera. So for the time being perhaps you’ll be prepared to just make do with this profusion of pink!

We have two of these rhuses in the garden but they’re quite invasive - if we don’t keep on top of them we regularly find we have many more. But we have to forgive them - right now they make such a beautiful show! This image was taken from ’inside’ the branches, looking up towards a beautiful blue sky.

And finally, as October gives way to November:

October is such a beautiful month, isn’t it!

There’s Scarlet and Violet, Ruby and Jade. But if you seek a truly daring color name for a da

There’s Scarlet and Violet, Ruby and Jade. But if you seek a truly daring color name for a daughter, this could be one option.

Thanks to Imogen for suggesting Fuchsia as Name of the Day.

Plenty of color names have become commonplace. Others, like Indigo or Lilac, are less expected, but not eye-poppingly unusual.

Fuchsia crosses the line from the surprising to the downright dramatic.

Maybe it is because fuchsia is a relatively new color. As a hue, the word first appears in English late in the nineteenth century. It wasn’t until 1990 that Crayola added a fuchsia crayon to the roster. (It’s #25 in their Box of 64 – check out fuchsia’s coloring page on their official site.)

Before it was a color, it was a plant. Still is, actually. Named in honor of Leonhard Fuchs, the sixteenth century botanist, the plant produces vivid pinkish-purplish-reddish blooms.

It’s the botanical angle that just might make Fuchsia wearable. With parents looking to expand the Garden of Girls from Rose and Lily to Azalea and Juniper, it is possible that Fuchsia could make the cut.

In fact, Fuchsia was chosen by musician Sting all the way back in 1982, for his firstborn daughter. I’m not sure if dad regretted his daring pick, or if his darling daughter didn’t care for her outlandish moniker, but Fuchsia Catherine prefers to be called Kate.

Word is that Dad borrowed the name from a fictional Fuchsia. Back in 1946, Mervyn Peake penned Titus Groan, the first book in a series about the inhabitants of Gormenghast, a remote, desolate kingdom. Lady Fuchsia is big sis to Titus, the heir to the Earldom of Gormenghast. There have been multiple adaptations, including two by the BBC – radio in the 1980s, a mini-series in 2000. Sting himself voiced the scheming servant Steerpike in the radio version, just a few years after his daughter’s birth. In the 1970s, a short-lived progressive rock band named themselves Fuchsia in her honor; a 1981 song by The Cure references Fuchsia, too.

There’s also at least one real-life Fuchsia – English food writer, Fuchsia Dunlop. You’ll find her work in Gourmet and Saveur, as well as anywhere an expert’s opinion is need on Chinese cuisine.

But even if you’re all about extreme baby naming, there’s one hitch that might steer you away from Fuchsia towards Azure or Gardenia. The flowers’ fan club – the American Fuchsia Society – readily admits that their cherished bloom is among most misspelled of all flowers.

It leads me to think that Fuchsia’s flaws might outweigh her charms, even for the boldest babynamer, the kind who can shrug off accusations that their child’s name is better reserved for a drag queen. That’s not to say that color names aren’t possible options. In fact, Nameberry posted on appellations inspired by Crayola just a few months ago.

And yet, wait a few years. No so long ago, Violet and Scarlet were edgy and Indigo was extreme. Fuschia might make it into the wearable category yet.

Q: My garden did especially well this year! Is there any way I can bring some of my favorite plants

Q: My garden did especially well this year! Is there any way I can bring some of my favorite plants inside to enjoy for a bit longer?

A: As winter is drawing near, it is hard to give up on the plants you nurtured all summer long. When the weather turns colder, it’s time to bring in tropical plants, non-hardy annuals, and tender perennials. Plants such as geraniums, fuchsia, and dahlias may be relocated indoors. No method is totally foolproof, so expect to lose some plants, but you would have lost them anyway if they stayed outside.

Plants can over winter three ways:
1.	Treat the plant like a houseplant and keep it in a sunny, warm location,
2.	Put the plant in a cool but bright basement or well insulated garage,
3.	Store in a dark, cool place where the plant can go dormant.

General preparation
Only bring in the healthiest plants; a weak plant may not survive the transition. Dig up the plant, trying to keep as much of the root system as possible. Plant the transplant in potting soil in a pot with ample room for the roots and adequate drainage. Prune plants to remove any dead or broken foliage. If you want to bring in container plants, collect them as well. To prepare plants for their journey, spray them with a strong blast of water to remove any pests and debris. Spray with insecticidal soap if there are hangers-on. Move the plants to a shady, cool location for a few days, and then bring them indoors. The plant may drop leaves or yellow a bit during the transition. Check plants regularly for dryness and insects, and mist if the humidity is very low.

Pelargoniums (a.k.a. Annual Geraniums)
After spending weeks looking for the perfect red annual geranium, you enjoyed it all summer long. You want that perfect red again next year, so bring the plant inside or take cuttings.

Bringing it inside: Treat geraniums like a houseplant. Prune the plant to 1/2 the original size, place in a pot and keep in a warm and sunny location. Growing a plant in a sunny window is easy, just keep it watered when the soil is dry and turn the pot occasionally to keep the growth even. Geraniums may get leggy growth during the winter, just pinch back to promote fullness. Move the geranium outdoors in the spring when nighttime temperatures are above 50 degrees. Other plants that like this treatment are coleus, marguerite daisies, hibiscus and salvias.

Taking cuttings:
You can take stem cuttings from geraniums, called ‘slips.’ Cut a piece of healthy stem from the tip, approximately four inches in length. Remove the leaves from the bottom two inches of the cutting. In a container, plant the slips in vermiculite or well-drained potting soil. Dip the defoliated end of the slip in a rooting hormone; then plant it two inches deep and water thoroughly. Place the container in a sunny window or under artificial light until the plants are rooted, about three to four weeks. Plant the rooted slips in individual pots and keep them in a well-lighted area. Keep the soil moist and fertilize with a diluted liquid fertilizer when new growth appears, then every four to six weeks.

Fuchsia
Fuchsia plants appear delicate but can stand fairly harsh treatment. They will tolerate being shorn and parked away in the corner of a basement or garage for the winter. Leave the plants outside until the first frost. Prune the plant to 1/2 the original size; for hanging baskets, prune to within six to eight inches of the main stem. Do not cut the main stalk. Place the plants in a cool but bright 40 to 50 degree unheated basement or well insulated garage. Water the plants whenever they feel dry. In the spring, move the plant to a warmer, sunnier location. Pinch off the new growth at the tip to promote branching. Feed with a diluted liquid fertilizer when new growth develops and move outdoors when nighttime temperatures reach 50 degrees.

Dahlias
Dahlias are another plant that enjoys indoor accommodations for the winter. In our climate, they are tender perennials that don’t survive the winter. Wait until after a hard frost and cut off the blackened foliage. Dig up the tubers, shake off the soil and set aside to dry in a cool place for a few days. Shake off any remaining soil and place in a well-ventilated container in peat moss. Store the dahlias in a dark, cool area, 40- 50 degrees. Calla lilies, cannas and tuberous begonias can be stored the same way. Check every few weeks to make sure the bulbous roots aren’t too dry. You can mist them, but don’t over water because it will promote rot and fungus. In late spring, plant the dahlias in amended soil about 4-6 inches deep, placing the tuber on its’ side.

Along with yarn, fabric, paper and untold other obsessions, I also have a gel pen addiction. My favourite every day gel pens are the Sarasa line by Zebra. They come in so many fabulous colours:

Black…. Indigo…. Blue…. Cobalt…. Mahogany…. Fuchsia…. Red…. Mustard…. Lime Green…. Forest….

These pens are smooth writing, long-lasting and retractable. They make every day writing more fun. I almost like writing cheques when I get to write them in pretty ink. And the best part of the ink in these pens is that it doesn’t leak through the page so you can use it in your daytimer, notebooks and everywhere else that you’ll be using both sides of a page.

The ink dries quickly (so smudging is virtually eliminated), and it’s acid-free, archival-quality ink.

The colours come in medium point, 7mm. You can also get blue, black and red in a 5mm.

The only downside to these dreamy pens is that they are nonrefillable.

Retailers say “Sarasa Gel Retractable Pens contain a smooth flowing, water based, pigment gel ink. Soft rubber grip provides writing comfort and control. Medium Point 7mm.”

Other reviewers say such things as: “I have spent two years searching for the perfect pen and this pen is it.” and “I am a pen fanatic. This pen is the perfect one.” and “They don’t skip, they don’t clog, and you can see when you are running out of ink.” So don’t just take my word for it – apparently everyone who has ever tried one is in love with them!

Despite their amazing popularity all of the big box stores in my neck of the woods have stopped carrying them individually. They only offer packs of red, packs of blue or packs of black. A couple of the stores still carry the 4-pack of black, mahogany, forest and cobalt, but what to do if you feel the urge to write in brighter colours? Fortunately there is still a specialty pen shop in town that is willing to stock the pens in each and every wonderful colour and sell them individually. I picked up lime, cobalt, fuchsia and mustard to keep me happily writing in my daytimer, paying bills and compiling lists. Now that winter and the grey is closing in I felt the NEED for more colour in my days.

OK, stop. Don’t look up. Close your eyes and spell this word out loud. OK, check now. How

OK, stop. Don’t look up. Close your eyes and spell this word out loud.

OK, check now. How’d you do?

This is indeed the sort of word that may confuse ya – or outfox you. A variety of spellings may be found for it; fuschia, fuscia, and fucia are all common enough. And they would seem to make more sense. How did it come to be spelled that way, anyway?

Well, rather, how did it come to be pronounced that way would be the right order of things. It was named (in 1703) after 16th-century German botanist Leonhard Fuchs. He’s far from the only person to have a plant named after him by appending the neo-latinate ia on the end; for instance, Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first US minister to Mexico, introduced the plant subsequently named after him to the US (and you will notice that the /i/ has been dropped in common pronunciation), and American anatomist Caspar Wistar had a now well-known plant named for him after his death (there was obviously some inconsistency in the spelling, given that we call it wisteria).

So anyway, Fuchs, which is German for “fox,” is not pronounced like “fewsh”; it rhymes with kooks, even in German (the velar fricative becomes a stop before the [s]). In theory, this word should be said “fooks-ya.” But aside from that sounding rather rude in Northern England, the average anglophone who looks at this word is unlikely to think of saying it that way.

The next question, though, is: what do fuchsia look like? I’m sure you know what colour they’re supposed to be. No doubt Herr Fuchs had no idea that, a half millennium after his time, his name would have transmuted from a reference to an animal known for being red to a soft, mushy word for a very floral, feminine kind of magenta. But the flowers actually come in a variety of kinds of red and purple. As for the flowers, they’re dainty little things that grow drooping downwards, looking rather like escapees from an especially florid ballet production, petals out like skirts and stamens down like spindly legs.

But it seems that the colour beats the flower in popular usage now. This word tends to be found near other colour names and near words such as dress, silk, hair, and lipstick. Not that the plant is rare or difficult; it’s actually quite hardy, surviving, like this word, rather better than you might expect.

Now, look again at this word. Does it look like a word for that kind of flower or colour? Really, I don’t know; you tell me. The f by itself bears a certain resemblance to the flower, but if I look at that fu and the ch it seems rather unfriendly and coarse. If, on the other hand, I think of how it’s pronounced and just glance at it as an ensemble, the effect of the sound takes over; I forget its past and heed its “fewsha.”

Mama P says I was born in the wrong era. Perhaps she is right. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the music of the 1980’s and the 1990’s, but I have a deep love for the music of the 50’s, 60’s and 70′. Simon and Gar, CCR, the Beatles, and Janis Joplin played in the Pretzel car all the time growing up. My favorite song, Kodachrome by Simon and Garfunkel. I soon discovered that Mr Pretzel shares my love of this song. We love to cue it up on the iPod and sing like idiots. To us, the song embodies fun, vivid color.

When we started to select our color pallet, I had a hard time eliminating colors. My favorite color is Turquoise/Aqua. But I also am partial to green, bright pink, and orange. With the exception of orange (it makes me look ill) I wear the other colors a lot. As I struggled to pick one or two colors- Mr Pretzel solved my problem. Use them all! Duhhh why didn’t I think of that? We started to refer to our wedding as a Kodachrome wedding and our vision of it started to come together. Check out my inspiration board:

From Sally Hansen’s Beyond Perfect range, this obnoxiously loud nail varnish has become one of my favourites. I first saw it on a friend (thanks, Claire, for all the inspiration) and, as soon as I could, went on a nail polish buying mission. I bought this for $4NZ – and two others for the combined price of $5 – and it was an excellent purchase. This colour brightens any outfit and everybody’s day.

(Beyond Perfect no. 19)

Today I’m wearing OPI Kinky in Helsinki from the OPI Colorcopia Collection. This is a collection with re-releases of older OPI colors.

I couldn’t really decide what color this polish is, so I had to sneak a peek at Scrangie’s description. She calls it a “pearly metallic fuchsia with blue-pink duochrome”, I just call it “beautiful”.

The application of this is flawless. I’m so happy when I find a polish that’s just a dream to apply! I wish every polish formula would be as nice as this one. I used three coats to achieve bottle color, and Poshé top coat.

I really don’t have any more to say about this lovely polish, other than enjoy the pics!

Sunlight and shade (these look a little washed out, it’s a hard color to photograph):

Flash and no flash (these are the ones that come closest to the real color, but it’s still not quite right):

When the matte polish trend started appearing, I didn’t like it at all. The matte finish reminds me of chalkboards, and nails and chalkboards DON’T MIX! Ewww eww eww!

But then I discovered that the mattes came in other colors than white, black, grey and green. Pink, blue and purple mattes? I’m in!

I totally fell in love with this color, La Paz-Itively Hot Matte. It reminds me of pink velvet, it’s so sophisticated and nice. The color is hot fuchsia with a blue flash. This is one of those colors that makes me keep looking at my nails all day.

It’s been said that application of mattes is hard, but I found it a lot easier than I thought. If you apply the polish reasonably fast and with a steady hand, it’s not that hard. But be aware that every brushstroke will show, and the polish dries really fast. I used three coats for this, over Essie Millionails. (Yes, I know that you’re not supposed to use base- or topcoat with these, but I cringe at the thought of putting polish on my bare nails.)

I only have outdoors pics today, because frankly, the indoors pics sucked.

From left: Direct sunlight and shade.

And just for fun, I put some polkadots in shiny topcoat over it. Looks really cute!
