Ive been a user of the excellent Google Wave for some weeks now. Ive written about how impressed I

Ive been a user of the excellent Google Wave for some weeks now. Ive written about how impressed I was even though its still in its development phase. Whilst using the service, I wondered from day 1 how long it would be before the Microsoft faithful would start to take a dislike to the suggestion of alternatives to Microsoft products. I didn’t have to wait long.

I was chatting in a Wave entitled “Do you like Windows 7?” which had been created by the user Jayant. As the wave became more popular it became apparent that more people were voting “no” to a poll which asked the above question. From memory the figures stood at approx 20 “yes” 9 “no” and 3 undecided. Of course (IMO) the MS faithful cannot have anyone saying they don’t like Windows 7 (at least until Windows 8 is ready for sale) so the Wave was deleted by an unknown user.

The creator of the wave had this to say:

2 days before there were 34 people who voted here but one “idiot F***” deleted this wave…otherwise now it should have 67 voters. F*** that idiot.

As more of the Microsoft faithful discover Google Wave we can (IMO) expect more of this behaviour and perhaps highlights an issue which Google need to sort out quickly in respect of features, that being, only the creator of a wave can delete it and users own comments cannot be edited by any other user. Its a shame that there are people that appear to be so frightened of an alternative to Microsoft that they have to engage in actions like this. Its also a shame that I believe the creator of this wave actually is a Windows 7 user and now they too have had their first experience of the Microsoft faithful.

Well Microsoft essentially have been patenting the commands of a linux box – essentially a command called sudo, and a command called gksudo which is an gui for sudo. There are some real idiots in the us patent office.

Recently ms was also passing off a software loader as their paid software when it had an open source licence.

It’s not good enough to show up the idiots in the patent office, and be caught stealing, while threatening to sue the linux community.

Central bank hoarding of gold in 1970 ushered in the famous gold bull market. With central banks likely to be net gold purchasers in H2 2009 for the first time since 1988 the same starting gun is ringing out today. The price at which the USD would be fully backed by gold (as it was during the peak of the 70s mania) is $6,300. So there is a case for gold being “cheap.” Moreover, the 70s bull market was facilitated by tight energy markets, overly accommodative central banks and nerv

China allowed the yuan to rise by 21% against the dollar in the three years to July 2008, but since then it has more or less kept the rate fixed. As a result, the yuan’s trade-weighted value has been dragged down this year by the sickly dollar, while many other currencies have soared.
Posted: 18 Nov 2009 09:43 AM PST

Some retailers are finding ways to profit even in the face of declining sales. On Tuesday, luxury retailer Saks Inc. reported a surprise profit and Target Corp. notched its first rise in year-over-year net income in eight quarters.

Its A-LIVE?:

Particularly as they have this light – this security light – at the back entrance of their house. I could understand if they were coming and going at all hours of the night but they aren’t, and besides, come on, this is a little town which on the whole is quite polite to anyone and everyone. I cannot think what they could possibly be on about, with that light.

Even so, I’ve become intrigued by its schedule. It doesn’t appear to be triggered by a motion sensor – numerous experiments, involving myself and others, seem to have proved this point – but neither does it appear to be on a strict timer. If it is on some sort of timer, by my cocktail-napkin calculations it must be on some random schedule of on and off, without much concern about energy or actual trespassers (will), or so forth.

I would not complain about this, but for the fact that my bedroom window does look out upon the same alleyway as the back of said law firm’s house, and so I am plagued nightly by the turnings on and off of said “security” light.

I one day hope, Oedipa-Mass-like, to uncover the covert secret meaning of the law firm, to comprehend why they are so important that they need to have a randomly-timed security light over their back entryway.

But now onto something infinitely more pleasurable: FOOD.

These are from a little while ago, when I was having another go at cooking a chicken (free-range, sans-drugs, raised as happy as can be sort of bloke). I was using, and modifying, a Martha Stewart (blessed be thy name) recipe, which called for the chicken to be placed upon a bed of coarsely-chopped onions – after, of course, said chicken had been stuffed with a fork-pricked (cease your sniggering) lemon, and trussed up, and anointed with various herbs and olive oil and butter.

I did not have a lemon, so I used a couple of limes. Likewise, I did not have Martha’s appointed herbs, so I used what I had to hand: some thyme, some rosemary, and some basil (by the bye, did you realize that basil is ridiculously easy to grow? All it wants is water and a bit of sunlight; but if you neglect the watering, water it shortly, and it will bloom like nobody’s business; behold the wonder of the humble basil plant). I also opted to use only olive oil, and no butter, as I’m attempting to be good about cholesterol and the like.

Here are the limes that went into the cavity of said bird:

Chopped garlic (I do not recommend looking at the “actual” size of this photo, as it got unhappily grainy):

Another Martha Stewart tip, and entirely necessary for those who, like I, have weirdly odor-permeable fingers:

The beast in its pre-cooked glory:

Alas that I neglected to take a photo of the finished product!

Rest assured it was delicious.

P.S. Dearest feline, please stop licking the imitation palm tree. You are seriously freaking me out.

MIT Technology review recently posted a interview with crypto-hero Whitfield Diffie.

Although the entire interview is great, one stands out…

Technology Review: What are the security implications of the growing move toward cloud computing?

Whitfield Diffie: The effect of the growing dependence on cloud computing is similar to that of our dependence on public transportation, particularly air transportation, which forces us to trust organizations over which we have no control, limits what we can transport, and subjects us to rules and schedules that wouldn’t apply if we were flying our own planes. On the other hand, it is so much more economical that we don’t realistically have any alternative.

There’s another dimension to his analogy that we need to consider. When airplanes fail (i.e. hijacked), human lives may be lost and panic ensues. We haven’t yet, to my knowledge, have had a visible electronic attack that has such significant consequence (albiet the “Cyberterror” concern has been felt by Estonia). We’ve seen a few headaches, but nothing life theatening.Clearly, given the amount of control computers have over our lives, it’s only a matter of time. When that unfortunate time comes, what will occur? New laws and regulations? Direct government oversight? Will the industry police itself into innovating new technologies as a competitive advantage?

Let’s hope the latter. One of the key differences is that it’s hard to sell airline security. Would a consumer fly on Airline A rather then Airline B, knowing that the pilot of airline A could carry a gun, or had a more secure cockpit door? Do these things even really make us more secure?

The other difference is that air travel is a commodity and there’s not that much growth left. In fact, most businesses (the sweet spot customer of the airline industry) are cutting back travel. The airline industry is focused on taking share from each other, and the primary factor is “who can supply at the lowest price.” It’s hard for the airline business to change, since profits are scarce and growth is inhibited (new continents don’t seem to be popping up on the planet earth anymore).

In the IT/Internet/technology arena, there’s a few big differences:

First, the computer security industry has proven that you can sell security to the end user — and you can certainly sell it to the business market. If I were building a company on a cloud platform, I’d pay a premium for the provider who could offer better security features.

Second, with the cloud movement, the “right things” (storage, compute, network) are reverting to a commodity posture, which will lower the barriers for new, higher level, services to be built at scale. Lowing the barriers will ignite opportunity, and a rush to use cloud-based applications. Putting it another way, a few entrepreneurs can build a company on a cloud provider without buying datacenters, servers, power, gigantic network connections, and even hiring IT staff to build the servers out. In the cloud, all of this is done with a credit card and a few clicks of the mouse. If security issues emerge, the profit-motive will drive the cloud provider to quickly retool an offering to respond to a threat, or, they’ll be passed by.

However, in the meantime (and with the constant media attention focused on “cloud failures”) it will be a turbulent ride.

- Craig

Well, for the holidays, get them a FUD. What is this? It’s the colorful new product from GoGirl.

“Simply put, GoGirl is the way to stand up to crowded, disgusting, distant or non-existent bathrooms. It’s a female urination device (sometimes called a FUD) that allows you to urinate while standing up. It’s neat. It’s discreet. It’s hygienic. [And feminist friendly!]

GoGirl is easy to use. Just lower your panties, and put GoGirl against your body, forming a seal. Aim and, well, pee. Pretty simple, huh?”

My early product line management PLM career at Rockwell International’s Network Transmission S

My early product line management PLM career at Rockwell International’s Network Transmission Systems Division and later Alcatel was a “tough row to hoe”. My products were element-layer and network-layer management systems for telecom networks. For the network operator, these products were expensive to purchase, a little mysterious and esoteric for the uninformed, a heavy burden to maintain, and for 99.9% of the time these systems were nearly invisible and seemingly unneeded. Try justifying that purchase to the decision makers… It was a tough sell because there were so few facts to demonstrate a rational need. On the other side of the table, these products were especially difficult for me to garner funds for their development. I was severely challenged to show how much revenue my products would generate when our customers didn’t want to purchase these products in the first place. Worse, these particular management system products were “bargaining chip give-aways” to “seal the deal” if necessary. My customer counterparts and I were often in the most unfortunate position of having FUD as the only sales tool in our PLM toolbox. Measuring the real contribution to the bottom line for my products whether for us or our customers was impossible.

If a justification effort turns to the tools of FUD – fear, uncertainty and doubt, any seasoned executive will recognize the “ploy” from a subordinate and is likely to reject the “amateurish” effort outright. And if the seasoned executive can, they will often wield the tools of FUD themselves on less experienced adversaries to disarm a conflict or force an agreement – FUD is fast to foist and often effectively glosses over many troublesome details.

I learned a number of valuable lessons from the old PLM days, and I continue to pass them onto my clients at every opportunity:

1) In the absence of facts, hire the best salesperson you can to sew the seeds of hope, ambition and confidence – HAC – to counter FUD. In a battle exclusively of metaphor and hyperbole, charisma wins out to justify a “leap of faith”.

2) FACTS overcome FUD – and HAC, too – always! It is always worthwhile to discover facts and master their presentation.
